Those little wall mount infrared heaters usually meant for bathrooms work great in situations like this. That's what my buddy uses in his pump house in the UP of Michigan. He does use heat tape on the 5ft of pipe going into the ground though but just the vertical section to get below the frost line.

Another good heating solution for radiant heat is incandescent lamps, especially if you use 220V to 300V lamps on 120V so they will last for years. Main trick is to remember that they only use about 30% (300V) to 40% (220V) of their rated power on 120V so you will need to account for this. You also need to be careful moving them after a few years when the filament gets all sparkly from grain boundary growth/creep in the filament wire, as the filament will now be very brittle.

I bet a light bulb inside a foam box around the pump would work a treat. My grandfather had two bulbs in his well pit that served him well for decades. That was an underground space about 4ft by 6ft by 6ft high. If wanting to heat a space like this pump shed, a regular space heater is better. Not too fragile, readily available in sizes from 300 watt to 1500 watt on 120v. Of course, this looks off-grid and he mentioned a 24v motor. Good thing they make 24v space heaters (for large trucks). I wonder if they make 24v heat tape for pipes?

Seems like one of those stick on resistance heaters would do wonders on that to heat the casing in the event of an emergency. a little 3x5 50-watt heater right on the bottom of the casting. They are great because it's direct contact with the steel so all of the heat goes where it needs to. Just make sure to seal the edges with RTV so it's sealed, otherwise they short out from condensation

Heat tape is only reliable for a year or two. Homeowner education is the key.

Can you provide some details on the heat tape you installed in this instance?

Random thought, but I wonder if Brent at Cerro Gordo (@GhostTownLiving) still has issues with his pump. He had a piston pump like 300' underground in his mineshaft and it was always breaking down. I think it's just a straight pex pipe to the surface. he doesn't even have running water in the cabin he lives in if memory serves. It's on the other side of the country from you I believe, but you seem like the kind of person that could point him miles down the right road to getting power and water up there for the hotel he's re-building with even a conversation. Or get someone else to make a youtube video about you for a day
With how meticulous you are, you're either going to laugh or cry if you look into his setup if it's the same one from a year or two ago. Definitely, some miner cobbled the current setup together back in the day

    Engineer 775,
I remember you had a VSP Battery Generator. Checkout this new UA-cam video ua-cam.com/video/g7uwjmPYehc/v-deo.html . Can you confirm if it is the same unit just packaged in grey instead of green and also yellow?
What are your thoughts about this unit?
