  • Like any high mileage vehicle, parts start to fail. In this case, it appeared to be the turbo. Typically, you replace the parts. But on some occasions with some cars, you have the opportunity to upgrade! Look at what can be achieved with close to the same cost as replacing the original part!

    Ok bois. Here's the skinny on this
    More turbo means you need more of everything else. If you just swap turbo you WONT be getting all you can out of the car, and you will be broke down very soon. Here's a list of the basics you will need to do in order to do it right. The first thing is make sure you have the proper PVC. Im not sure about years but I think after 2003 they corrected the pvc system and there was recalls, so when in doubt just replace the pvc system. Plus the hoses are most likely old and if one has a crack you cant see you will be bumming. More air consumption - cold air intake system.
    More fuel - upgraded fuel rail
    To make it all work - computer tune is a must unless you dont want the car to run right.
    Now it makes more heat - intercooler upgrade. Radiator should be ok stock but silicon hoses everywhere possible to keep oils, waters and air cool as possible. If your smart you will wrap that manifold and the hard pipe at top of turbo with heat tape.
    With more boost you need to expel the unwanted air faster - blow off valve.
    Back pressure needs to escape - larger exhaust diameter has to happen.
    And last is spark. NGK platnums are THE BEST PLUGS period for this car. I am dead serious about the heat issue. My stage 3 got really warm and you can feel the heat through the floor boards. This is all fun and stuff but it's not cheap to do it right.

All come to see the museum and the factory. Looking forward to more videos! Take care

      He did it way wrong, turbo is supposed to come out from underneath, he created alot more work than was nessisary by pulling it out from above.

    Great video, man! I've done this upgrade 6 years ago on my 96 900 when I started blowing oil into exhaust. Got a used td04 and a rebuild kit on eBay. Rebuilt it and got it balanced. Still works great on stock tune. Can't wait to do a stage 3 or 4 tune! Clocking the turbo and the lines was the hardest for me.

    Use factory 90 style near intake pipe to clear. Flex lines everywhere else worked great. Install flex lines to turbo before install. Got flex kit off Ebay for this upgrade. You will need banjo bolts from original turbo and kit. Hope this helps.

    The thing is, smaller turbo spools faster. And you have that power on lower RPM, or say you're starting getting more power and not just letting bigger turbo choking you until it spools and pulls finally. T25 has great potential, as you said at the end of the video, definitely is more fuel efficient in urban traffic plus some light pulls :) I see the advantages. That being said, I have a 95 with TD04, 2 9000s with TD04, one 93 with TD04, then 93 and ng900 with T25, 95 with a T17... The list goes on. 2 liter has more "issues" with TD04 to actually get to run and produce some power :) compared to 2.3L.

    • @saabsofamerica5328
      @saabsofamerica5328  5 років тому

      I know the smaller turbo spools faster. In fact I really liked it at stage 2. But stage 3 it was running out of breath. More boost from there it just can't cut it. Plus the turbo oil seal blew so I replaced with td04 and is a lot more manageable with the higher power tune. 👍👍

    • @PeterChomanic
      @PeterChomanic 5 років тому +1

      @@saabsofamerica5328 I totally understand why you did it :) and why it was a good idea for you. You definitely do more of a "crazy" driving (ehm) and you plan for power increase in the future possibly as well, and sinc the oil issue added up on that, it was clear which way to go (let's just assume that stage 1 2 3 really helped T25 to just go bad earlier - same as my T17).
      My comment was more of like informative, something that I felt was a bit missing to be said in the video and explain to all those "waaa, me getting a bigger turboo" and then still driving it more in the city :D

    Hi my 03' 9-3 vert recently blew its turbo. It came with gt17 with bsr stage 1. I am swapping turbo td04-15t since I always yawned for lack of its power. I think I will be done by a week or two and was curious if my ecm or ecu will automatically recognize turbo or should I let a tuner to correct it or if I can, should I request bsr to give me a new program since I bought the ppc3 years ago? Problem with the tuner I know is a starter and used my 05 9-3 ss as a tester which made me drive nearly 3~4 months with various engine troubles. Think he fried my ecm once and put in out program like 20 dozen times until everything was settled with like stage3 263hp. I also gotta mention that while dismantling my turbo. I didn't have to take off my manifold while taking off gt17 I simply disconnected water lines and unhooked catalytic converter and pushed it aside to pull it out, but my turbo was small so not sure for other guys. I am waiting for a new adjustable wastegate actuator since nipple of actuator was bent and leaks (tested with air compressure)while shipping. Last question since I bought adjustable waste gate what bar spring should I set it on? My 9-3ss was set at 0.8 bar which runs great but anything over that I get overboost since I have stock catalystic. I would love to change it to 3" down pipe but understand that its illegal in Korea similar to California emission. Thanks for some answers in advance

      When you get a tune, it's programmed to run at a certain amount of boost. Doesn't matter what turbo. So when swapping turbo out, ecu should run fine, you'll just be at same boost level, even with a more powerful turbo. As far as the adjustable wastegate actuator and spring I couldn't tell you what to get sorry.

      It will compensate for the extra boost via the map sensor AS LONG AS it's not "running out of fuel"... meaning a situation in which the injectors are already flowing 100% of what they can and it's still not enough... If it's not pinging and your plugs don't look hot/lean, I'd say you'll be fine with fuel and timing

      PUT IT BACK ON. This does not work on T7 management systems. Only T5 can do this.
      2000+ 9-3 are T7, and ALL Viggen are T7. 1994-1998 900 are T5, and 1999 9-3 NON Viggen are T5.
      You basically can't do it. Not without a lot of work. Put the pipe back on, buy an air intake and call it good.
