I nip trained mine by accident now he just knows to be gentle he still bites but in the playful way cuz he understands the bites hurt so he's gental so he won't bite me randomly anymore but he bites when I play with him and it's the cute fun biting
My family had ferrets when I was a kid, and my mom used to do the nose tap thing. I'd later learn that you really shouldn't for various reasons, I'm glad people know that now.
Yeah, they love to get high then jump, most of ours are nip trained but one just bites from being mistreated from a previous owner but she's come along so strongly and bites then releases.
Recently just got myself a baby and all he does is bite, I haven't been bit yet because, honestly I'm a little scared, but I feel like if I do get bit it wouldn't bother me as much if it happened again. I'm trying, getting there, using gloves that keep getting thinner until eventually (hopefully soon) I use my bare hands. I've tried a few times but always pull away quite quickly. I just really need the confidence.
thank you for this, i hope it helps, but my problem with my ferret is he bites really really hard, like to the point where he has torn through several layers of skin and he doesn’t let go no matter what i do, i’ve tried the nose tap, i’ve tried to squeeze his nose, but when ever he grabs hold he leaves me with stitches.
Mine are a year old now but my male has started the lick lick chomp habit. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get him to understand that this hurts and wanted to find a safe way to get this across to him. He only does this if my feet or arms are bare. And now I’m starting to wear shorts and sandals so he’s back to this bad habit. Water bottle spraying method doesn’t work on ferrets like it does on cats 😂😂.
Im probably getting one for Christmas and i love this vid so when i get one i might play a little first and if it trys to nibble on me then i will put a little spit on it cus i like dont like the other idea because i dont usually feel completely comfortable but i will make more comments about this bye

I completely agree with your way of teaching ferrets, but honestly I think there are faster ways. I have a ferret that God does bite. It keeps biting it's true, but much less, I haven't needed to touch it on the nose or anything like that. With that method it takes twice as long. the method i use is fish or salmon oil and give it to him while you play it. If it turns to bite you, remove the oil and your hand, then when you pay attention to the oil again, it returns. So continuously. Then you give it less quantity, when a week or two passes the ferret will have already understood that biting is wrong, although it would not be fully trained since it would continue biting. After those weeks, start approaching him without food, of course have the oil in your hand, but don't give it to him. Caress it, at this point it should NOT bite, if it does it is because you have not dedicated all the time you should (this process should be done between 4 or more times a day, for about 5-10 minutes). After the ferret is better, touch and pet him and now you give him the treat. Then you do the same procedure with picking him up.
I didn't know it was called 'latched upon' but it happened to me at the pet store. I didn't strike or fight him, and eventually he relented. It didn't occur to me or the pet shop attendant to pinch the little skunks nose. What a great idea!
Most ferrets will bite at first out of curiosity but you want to stop them as soon as possible so I would nip train all ferret just to stop any future bites even if not prone to biting
Ferret babies are no different than puppies, kittens, human babies, etc. In regards to they explore and learn about the world around them by putting things in their mouths. Usually when they nip it's because they want to play.
My little guy only really bites when playing, and I'm not sure he likes being handled. But the play bites are turning into latches as he gets bigger, and we recently found out we were sold a polecat hybrid. How do I train him when nothing else is working?

I have a problem when I hold my ferret he refused to be held and he’s struggling to let go and trying to bite as well how can I solve this issue? Thank you
They are so young at the pet store that they are still teething, and they are crowded in cages with other teething weasels. Its no wonder that they are accused of being 'born to bite'.

@@jacksminizoo8109 I got my ferret 2 days ago, she's 4 months old. And doesn't let me even touch her. So how can I even grab her by the body if she just twists and bites my hand. Am I suppose to leave her alone for a few days to get comfortable with my home?
Yes just don’t try to touch her but stay when she eats and any any other time so she gets used to you being there. Once you feel she is confident around you then put your hand out, don’t try to grab and let her go to your hand👍
I recently got a polecat hybrid, and he is very sweet. He will occasionally let him give him head scratches and sniff me when I play with his toys. However sometimes out of no warning he’ll try and latch on, and it makes me wary of even trying to play. The breeders I got him from say he can be feisty. I brought him yesterday and he’s 5 months old, is he too old to start this way of nip training? Because they haven’t even taught him how to use his litter box, so I’m basically starting from scratch. I brought some gloves for now because he will try biting anyone that goes near him apart from me, at times. And I can’t even teach him to use the litter box as he spends most of his time trying to bite. Any tips?
I have never tried to litter box my ferrets however I do think that should impact why he bites however seeing as you only got him yesterday all his surroundings is new to him so it could just be out of curiosity and he is learning his boundaries. I suggest when you feed him stay with him and watch eat and spend as much time as you can with him to bond and gain trust, also if he does try and latch on put him away and play with him the next day to show it is not right. Or if he is on his own get him a friend and that should reduce biting. Hope this helped 👍
@@jacksminizoo8109 Yes thank you, he is coping much better now when I feed him. He does have a playmate but they get on fine together, just not when he is around humans.
@@blockeduser9441 Yes, I know that now. Obviously for those reasons I usually stay away from hybrids but I thought this time round I'd take a chance. They are great pets once you've gotten through the hard work, nevertheless.
better not hold them rough like that.. its better to support their butt since its too much pressure on their spine and ribcage when holding them like that.. what i did to train them was quite simple and harmless.. they yawn pretty often.. everytime they yawn put your finger in their mouth.. they wont like to bite then because you put your finger in their mouth on your terms.. after a while they wont like to bite you anymore..
So relieved to find this video. Just got a ferret and he's lovely but has bit me 4/5 times, latched on, shook his body about and wouldn't let go. I had no idea how to get him off of me and have been feeling a bit afraid of him. Pinching the nose, I shall try that!
When they bite substitute you with a toy, it will take time and patience. Their social animals and should not be cooped up for long periods of time and require lots of attention
As soon as possible (after being weaned(off the mother’s milk)) becouse at a young age it is ten times Easier that at an older one, and don’t be worried about scaring them they are very inquisitive creatures and by the next couple of days they will act like they have no fear in the world
Just gently hold his nose and then once he has let go give him a treat and just spend lots of time with him becouse once they learn who feeds them the the won’t bite you
I wouldn't give dog or cat treats as they food they can't have we did have a ferret that got in to my dog treats ended up very unwell but every pet different but I will not give my ferret dog or cat treats bit of raw chicken amazing for them love your video but veg and wheat very bad but it ur ferret
What about calming them down? I have three ferrets and two of them are jumpy and they scare my cat. I don't mind them jumping, but I don't like them scaring my cat to point where he won't come out from under my bed. :( Any suggestions?
I am not completely sure becouse by nature ferrets are very inquisitive creatures maybe allocate a room for them so the cat doesn’t have to put up with them. I think that would be easier that trying to calm down a ferret😂
@@jacksminizoo8109 Alright I'll have to try that, also do you happen to know why some ferrets play with cats or small dogs? Did they bond at a young age or something?
Go get yourself some bitter Apple Spray It's just Apple Cider vinger it won't hurt your ferret. Spray it wherever he bites u he won't like the taste. Once or twice after that he won't bite you anymore
Or you could just not be a wimp and play with them on their terms. It's made my ferrets much more comfortable exhibiting their full range of natural behaviors with me. Telling them not to nip is telling them you aren't willing to fully engage in play.
Omg do not feed them dry pet food. There are ingredients in these products that are not safe for ferrets. Raw feed only. Why do you keep them outside and not inside. Whats the point having a pet thats stuck in a cage outside?

Don’t worry too much it will just take time
@@blockeduser9441
Yes, I know that now. Obviously for those reasons I usually stay away from hybrids but I thought this time round I'd take a chance. He, and his littermates are getting on perfectly fine, took atleast 2 months but slowly introducing them to me has obviously helped. No more gloves, no more random bites. . and more snuggles for me
@@blockeduser9441
Yes, totally understand you.
I thought the same, though I've been around ferrets since I was young, but never fully got in contact with them as they weren't exactly mine. But you are right about bonding to one human, mine for a fact wont really co-operate with my other family members unless I'm in the same room and can see me. They are great pets once you've gotten through the hard work, nevertheless.
Bitter Apple Spray It's just Apple Cider vinger
i just got my ferret about 2 weeks ish lol she about 10 months i was told she sweet
Six months? Mine took a few days.
Do you let them out?
My jills have bitten me 6 months since the first day home…..but hobs don’t bite me….
I tried biting my ferrets before watching this video, but I guess that wasn't what you meant.
Currently have fur in my mouth.
I trained my 12 weeks ferrets not to bite in 3 days using the scruffing, a week later i kissed both (male and female) on the mouth and they back
Do u give raw chicken to a ferret?
better not hold them rough like that.. its better to support their butt since its too much pressure on their spine and ribcage when holding them like that.. what i did to train them was quite simple and harmless.. they yawn pretty often.. everytime they yawn put your finger in their mouth.. they wont like to bite then because you put your finger in their mouth on your terms.. after a while they wont like to bite you anymore..
So relieved to find this video. Just got a ferret and he's lovely but has bit me 4/5 times, latched on, shook his body about and wouldn't let go. I had no idea how to get him off of me and have been feeling a bit afraid of him. Pinching the nose, I shall try that!
👍👍
Still having to get bit go get urself some bitter Apple Spray It's just Apple Cider vinger. Spray it wherever they bite u fingers or toes
Once your ferret gets a taste he won't like it and he will stop
When they bite substitute you with a toy, it will take time and patience. Their social animals and should not be cooped up for long periods of time and require lots of attention
What age do you suggest starting to teach them not to bite? I just got a ferret at a very young age and don’t want to scare them
As soon as possible (after being weaned(off the mother’s milk)) becouse at a young age it is ten times Easier that at an older one, and don’t be worried about scaring them they are very inquisitive creatures and by the next couple of days they will act like they have no fear in the world
@@jacksminizoo8109 thanks heaps!
I tied to bite train my ferret by gently tapping my ferrets nose, but he would just bite even harder, got any suggestions?
Just gently hold his nose and then once he has let go give him a treat and just spend lots of time with him becouse once they learn who feeds them the the won’t bite you
Jacks Mini zoo thanks
Dog or cat treats? Shouldn't I be worried about wheat, or products not good for their digestion??
I wouldn't give dog or cat treats as they food they can't have we did have a ferret that got in to my dog treats ended up very unwell but every pet different but I will not give my ferret dog or cat treats bit of raw chicken amazing for them love your video but veg and wheat very bad but it ur ferret
I have 5
Hello I actually like it when my little polecat bites me
What about calming them down?
I think so or if the dog or cat are willing to play becouse my dog doesn’t like playing with my ferrets
I think it just tepend
Depends
@@jacksminizoo8109 thanks I really appreciate you replying back. Do you play any video games? :D
Being locked in a cage sucks, they need free roam
Im gonna get one in like 2 weeks, what are tips? And btw what is cheap food that you recommend?
Just have a look on Amazon becouse I got a 10kg bag for £20 which in my opinion is a good price
@@jacksminizoo8109 thank you
ferrets aren’t cheap don’t buy them cheap food. please let me know what u are feeding them they can get very sick and need a balanced diet
I feed mine on an almost completely raw meat diet but will give dry cat food if needed
@@jacksminizoo8109 raw is the best !
What if they just bite hard when they play ? Try the same process?
If they bite hard when they play just don’t play with them once they have done it and just repeat it will just take time
Go get yourself some bitter Apple Spray It's just Apple Cider vinger it won't hurt your ferret. Spray it wherever he bites u he won't like the taste. Once or twice after that he won't bite you anymore
how do u potty train them
NEVER HIT YOUR FERRETS NOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bite mine back not hard but enough they get the point lol
I tried holding down my ferrets nostrils he just started breathing out of his mouth while biting me 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤣🤣
TOSS
It took me 5 weeks
No you don’t want just 1 or 2 you need at least ten 😂😂😂
Agreed
I bit mine back
Or you could just not be a wimp and play with them on their terms. It's made my ferrets much more comfortable exhibiting their full range of natural behaviors with me. Telling them not to nip is telling them you aren't willing to fully engage in play.
What kind of person burns their nose omg
I know but I have heard story’s but i think it was more back in the day, however I wouldn’t put it past some people
Do not give them dog food its loaded with carbohydrates and thats very bad for them
Omg do not feed them dry pet food. There are ingredients in these products that are not safe for ferrets. Raw feed only. Why do you keep them outside and not inside. Whats the point having a pet thats stuck in a cage outside?
Dog food? every other day? Geez...
Some dog food can be used and enough given can be fed every other day
@@jacksminizoo8109 i worry about the info you are giving... i dont want to fight, just to alert people viewing that this is not correct/complete... (note im not lecturing)
I am all for positive criticism but I did some research into the dog I was giving them and there was nothing bad in it but you will be happy to know I have moved them on to cat food
@@jacksminizoo8109 a step In the right direction BUT you really need a complete ferret food, there is plenty out there, not sure why you would overlook the expert nutritional advice, a google of ferret food and some common sense will get you right on to a complete dedicated ferret food , like just made for ferrets, like 100% for them, like all the nutrients they need ... you can add raw also 100% support a mixed diet for them, but make sure you provide balance... do some research and please don’t lead people to feed them just dog or cat or rabbit food it’s not good for the precious lil crits
Ferrets and cat are both obligate carnivores meaning they only eat meat so that means that they consist of the same things I’ve done the research and found the best cat food for them because it is a lot cheaper for me to feed them catfood rather than the branded ferret food
I have to say dog food??some people feed them every other day?ferret's digest there food in 2hours....dog food got lots of fiber in it that they can't digest!my ferret does not eat raw because she hates it....but she get cooked meat!only meat!they don't eat what ever!I liked your video but about the food it's not right! It makes them last half of there years!raw meat is the best!but if they don't eat it cooked is not bad!
