Could Britain Reunite Its Empire Today? | What If
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Could the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the modern day successfully reunite a large part of it's former Empire? Might the increasingly popular CANZUK Plan to bring Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Britain into a union be an opportunity for the British to recapture their imperial glory through a new Federation? Or is CANZUK something different entirely? Today we'll explain the history of Britain and it's Settler Colonies, and what their future might hold whether they go through with a full reunification or not.

As Erwin Rommel once famously said: "If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it and the New Zealanders to hold it. If I'd had one division of Māori, I would have taken the [Suez] canal in a week. If I'd had three, I'd have taken Baghdad."
Great lads but all nations has received similar words from military leaders.
Example- Northern Ireland, UK- General Robert E Lee of the Confederate Army said in a news paper after the american civil war when asked who made the best soldier- " The Scottish who came here by the way of Ireland, as they quickly take positions like the Irish and the stubbornness to hold it of the Scottish"
@@ulsterinfidel9897 True enough... although the only thing I would add is that Australia and New Zealand didn't exist at that time, and in WW1 and WW2 their divisions received universal plaudits despite the existence, example and record of the other great militaries of the era.
Except he also certainly didn't say it. One the history of the North African campaign makes the details of the quote counterfactual. The early part of the campaign when Australian divisions were engaged in successful offensive ops was before Rommel and the Afrika Korps were even in Africa. Australian ops against Rommel involved either a whole series of thwarted offensives or retreat. The only real 'success' Australian forces had against him was the prolonged defense of Tobruk in 1941.
Of the 3 major battles took place around El Alamein in '42 only one Australian division the 9th played a part and that was removed also for the 3rd battle as the Australian govt decision to use it own troops to fight in the Pacific first and no more Australian troops were sent to Nth Africa. The NZ division, which was equipped to essentially to be a sort of motorised division during the El Alamein battles, was used far more for offensive successful ops against Rommel than Australian units were.
As to Māori & German troops, they had large animosity towards each other, and a few instances shooting of prisoners on each side. As obviously Germans had racist attitudes toward non-white troops and highly likely Rommel shared these publicly as he been involved with the Hitler youth from the mid 30s as a military liaison and even proposed that they be integrated into the Army. He then was later specifically requested by Hitler to command Hitler's personal Army escort unit in 1938. These would not have happened if Rommel wasn't completely on board outwardly with Nazi racial theories. The idea he would be on record of praising non white troops at the time the German nation was officially fighting a race war is obviously ridiculous. What Rommel thought in private we don't know as there is conflicting accounts, with his son's post war attempt to claim he didn't have racist views obviously possibly driven less than honest motives.
There are an awful lot of myths about Rommel and people need to treat stories and purported quotes with a great deal of caution. otherwise you end up believing that half the Allied troops of servicing in Nth Africa personally met Rommel when they were briefly captured.
this quote wasn't said and if it was said which there is no sources, it would only be due to his own fuck ups, doing exactly what guderian did in poland

As a Canadian from Ontario I had always dreamed of this. Let’s make CANZUK, the alliance of historically/culturally close commonwealth nations become a reality!! Who’s with me?? 🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿🇬🇧
But what does England give to Canada, New Zealand or Australia? It’s just a way to combat the EU, and there’s no real benefit for anyone of the countries, except Britain. Maybe the settler colonies could be useful to each other, but England, as I said, had nothing to give.
@@baconator2427 I can see your point. What I assume what England has to give are it’s people. Think about it, the UK is tiny, but it’s also densely populated. With Canzuk allowing people to move freely, the British can settle in any of the Canzuk nations for economic opportunities, plus the fact that Canada, Australia and New Zealand are sparsely populated, there’s tons of land to fill up. UK also ranks high in terms of economic support, education and so fourth. Bringing their expertise would potentially boost businesses and settlement, further increasing the power of each nation. Let’s also not forget the UK has a powerful military and naval force. This would be increasingly valuable for Canada, Australia and New Zealand to which theirs is very minuscule, and would maintain security throughout the world from unwanted influences.
@@neilc.8368 I also see your point and now am wondering, is it a good idea for England’s oldest ally to break away from the EU and seek strength in going to Brazil?
@@neilc.8368 Australia's GDP per capita is considerably higher than the UK's, our military spend is about 60% and also significantly higher per capita. @Lovely Hitler India did not do everything and you completely misunderstood his point about the French. He said the French were capable of making a vast empire without India so Britain could too. Most importantly if Britain never tried to colonise India then it could’ve put far more pressure on america and made it the engine of the empire and quelled to revolution far easier.

Our overseas defense commitments are growing crippling and, at home, we are struggling and in need of deep reforms. CANZUK would absolutely be the envy of the world. No 4 countries in the world are closer culturally, economically and politically. With CANZUK being 100% NON-POLITICAL, it retains the incredibly important aspect of pure independence of 4 fantastic fully independent countries. It's consensual and for the benefit of everyone. This video is acting like CANZUK would be like the EU or a joined nation. That is not CANZUK. At all. It's a free trade deal with free movement of people. Sovereignty has always been of the upmost importance of CANZUK.
We were never disillusioned with England at the end of WW2, because it was a consequence of fighting the war, and we three knew that. We became disillusioned when they entered the EU, and that breaking up lead to what we have seen over 80 years. The decline of the West. Now it is different.
Our Commonwealth brothers have never let us down in times of war. It's about time that we rekindled our friendship now that we've left the EU.

CANZUK actually wouldn't be the most terrible idea in the world, we'd somehow still be more functional than the Federal-State relationship within the US.
Edit: Frankly, it would be a great move to make Australia and New Zealand safer. If we were one nation with Britain and Canada then we’d be able to call on European and American allies much easier than we currently can- as it stands our isolation from any other European style democracies allows China to push us around as much as they want.

Honestly i hope the thing culminates in a Confederation, united foreign policy and military but the nations remain almost entireley self governing but with free migration, trade etc. But that would be in like 50+ years, any meaningful integration would be a purposely long and slow process due to the cultures of each nation.
