    The ending credits theme is pure nostalgia. Hell, this entire game is pure nostalgia. This was a tremendous handheld game back when it came out, and was a good game period, still has charm today, and anyone who can't see that needs to drop the ridiculous comparisons to modern games.

    It's amazing how Super Mario Land is so hard when you're a kid, but when you're an adult, you can blow through it in half an hour.
    Fun fact: while it's true NoA didn't localize the enemy names in the original release, they DID give them westernized names in the Virtual Console release in 2011.

      I think I got as far as World 3 when I was a kid, playing on my cousin’s Game Boy, and even that was a struggle. Revisiting it a couple of decades later, and I don’t get why it was so hard. It’s like the reverse of Nintendo Hard, where I get shellacked as an adult in the first level of NES games I managed to conquer as a kid.

    • @skycloud4802
      @skycloud4802 2 роки тому

      No for me it's the opposite. When I was a kid I beat Super Mario Land very easily, but after a quite literally decades out of practice as an adult I now find it hard and frustrating.

    Definitely one of the most under-rated gaming channels on youtube. I have beaten/completed/retired super mario land for the game boy and I still think its beyond a competent classic. I really have no problems with the game and the departure from the typical mario formula was a nice break. It's a game that does deserve to be played and enjoyed by all platforming enthusiasts.

    To me this is still one of the best platformers on the system. Due to the simple fact that it is one of the few good ones that wasn't afraid to sacrifice sprite size for playability. Most platformers on the gameboy are a lot slower and clunckyer because they try to emulate nes or even snes graphics with bigger sprites, including the other mario games on the system. In the other hand this game surprisingly has a comparable field of view to its nes counterparts and it plays at a similar speed and fluidity as a consequence.
    I think it might be the only game that actually plays like a mario game on gameboy and I frankly prefer it over the original super mario bros.

    I had never thought about Mario Land's chronological timing in the series in Japan vs. America, before. Throwing in Mario 2 as a wild card was a game changer.

    Using a Heart for a 1up might be a hardware limitation. How do you show the difference between red and green mushroms on a black and white system? I look forward to the same bit of trivia with Metroid 2's redesign of the Varia Suit.

    Super Mario 2 is not an impostor. It’s a much better sequel than The Lost Levels and had much more involvement by the same team that made SMB than The Lost Levels

    It had talent from the Mario series working on it.
    It was envisioned as a “New” Mario like experience.
    It brought mainstays like Bob-ombs, Pokeys, Shy Guys, etc to the series.
    Calling Mario 2 USA an imposter gives me some serious Irate Gamer flashbacks. It wasn’t a literal Mario game at first, but it left its impact and deserves to be held among the other great NES titles as a valid entry in the series.

    • @TrevRockOne
      @TrevRockOne 4 роки тому +1

      Calling it an imposter is just a statement of fact. It doesn't necessarily devalue it. In fact, I've heard Parish say that SMB2 was his favorite of the NES trilogy as a child.

    It gameplay similar to that of the 1985 NES game Super Mario Bros., but resized for the smaller device's screen, the player advances Mario to the end of 12 levels by moving to the right and jumping across platforms to avoid enemies and pitfalls. Unlike the other Mario games, Super Mario Land is set in Sarasaland, a new environment depicted in line art, and Mario pursues the debuting Princess Daisy. The game has two Gradius-style shooter levels.

    Perhaps it's not under your typical purview but I'm surprised you made no mention of the music. I actually just recently acquired the game and thoroughly enjoyed it despite playing it for the first time in 2019 in no small part due to the delightfully minimalist but enchanting OST.

    great job on the remaster - this game was incredible owning it when it first came out, you are so correct that many of us were still playing on LCD tiger games. Then you get this Super Mario experience that seems to have the perfect balance of challenge and simple highly playable gameplay that made the system truly shine! Screw the lame idiots who call this game bad, it is still fantastic to play to this day and it gives the Mario legacy more depth, character, and variety compared to many titles in the series.

    The electronics section of our old Fred Meyers had the Gameboy behind glass cases. I remember it just sort of appeared there one day. Never saw much advertising for it at the beginning. "What is this?" I thought at first. They had a demo unit and some of the games strewn about in their tiny cartridges. The girl behind the counter handed it to me with Super Mario Land already loaded. The monochrome display bothered me for only a minute. I stayed playing Mario until they kicked me out. Saved up paper route money for months to get one. I had the little carrying case accessory. The light and magnifier. Rechargeable battery packs. Pretty much everything they made for it. The nice thing was how the games were about half the price of NES titles. I could actually afford to buy some of my own instead of just renting them.
    It surprised me how much I liked Tetris and Kwirk. Or how bad the first Castlevania, Ninja Turtles and Megaman games were. I finished the two FF Legend rpg's and then FF Adventure. But in the end the game I played most was Motocross Maniacs. I can still even remember the music for it.
    Good times. Thanks for the nostalgia.

    I love how Mario Land handles compared to its sequel. The physics are slightly off, but Mario still seems to have his proper weight, acceleration, and momentum for the most part. The zoomed-in perspective of Mario Land 2 allowed for bigger, more detailed sprites, but it also saddled us with a much slower, floatier Mario.

    • @skycloud4802
      @skycloud4802 2 роки тому +1

      I kind of liked the floatier Mario Land 2 physics though. Mario Land 1 is so weighty that it feels like Mario is constantly holding a ship anchor.

    I don't get why so many people seem to get weirded out by a series simply doing something different for a change.
    Yes, it doesn't take place in the mushroom kingdom. That's a good thing.
    Yes, Bowser isn't the villain again. That's a good thing.
    Yes, you don't save Peach this time. That's a good thing.
    Yet people somehow seem to be alienated by these changes. Why though?
    If you just want the exact same presentation over and over again, play the "New" Super Mario Bros. series.

    I remember beating Super Mario Land several times as a kid, seeing the end credits, and not giving it a second thought over the people behind the game whose names scrolled by. Of course back then, these people were not really that known at all, at least outside Japan, and seeing their names in a video game gave some recognition that there were people at Nintnedo were weren't nameless serfs cranking away these classics.

Perfect to complete and then master! Gameboy and Nes offered so many difficult games that I welcome the easier titles.

    I can't believe Nintendo have never revisited this game. Aside from a brief cameo as a boss in SML2 and the implication that he was hired by Wario to cause the events of the game to distract Mario long enough for him to take over, Tatanga has never reappeared. Daisy has never appeared in a canon Mario game ever again, only the Kart, sports and party games, and even when she has Sarasaland has never appeared again. None of this game's bizarre creativity has ever really recurred in the series again. Maybe Nintendo are ashamed of it, because it deviates too wildly from their sacred canon of what Mario is "allowed" to be?

    I missed your call for letters deadline for retronauts, but i actually got some fan art of this game published in the April 2001 issue of Nintendo Power. They used it as the largest art at the top, which made me proud. I basically just copied the box art, but it was still surprising that the staff would choose a ten year old game (in 2001 at least) to highlight. Still one of my all time favorites. The box art really sold the idea of the game in a way that Super Mario 1 on NES never did, at least in the U.S. Also, Mario looks a lot more intense and beleaguered on this box art than really any other Mario game (maybe Mario Strikers...?). Anyways, just wanted to share. Keep up the good work.

    Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't an "impostor" game or a "sprite hack of an unrelated game" as you called it. It was indeed commissioned as a promotion for an event, but inside Nintendo it was really developed by original Mario developers, who used the game to experiment with what kind of mechanics could work in a new Mario game.

    Another excellent review. Granted SML 1 is outclassed by Mario Land 2 and Wario Land, but those who look past it will still find an enjoyable romp. Although I feel you slightly exaggerated the span between the US versions of SML and SMB3, it was really only like six months instead of the year you made it out to be.

  • @TrepeGB

    Super Mario Land is one of my favourite Mario games. I prefer it over the NES Mario games. The control feels tighter and the level design feels better to me.
    It may be a relatively easy and short game but it has replay-ability because of all the little secrets and great design. It’s the only game I can honestly say that I’ve played regularly for 30 years (on the same Gameboy which still works perfectly after all this time) and still enjoy every single time.
    I like Super Mario Land 2 and it undoubtedly looks much nicer graphically but the regular, severe slowdown and oversized sprites in a limited resolution hampers the gameplay and takes the edge off it for me. I haven’t played the second Mario Land or Wario Land anywhere near as much as I have the original. I love those two games but for me, Mario Land works better on the Gameboy.

    a bit late, so don't know if you're going to read this, but I do think it is slightly hypocritical to remind everyone that Super Mario Land is entirely legitimate in its developers and intentions and "isn't an imposter game" then to call Super Mario Bros. 2 USA an imposter game. The game was originally developed as a Super Mario Bros. sequel, and it wasn't until the 11th hour of development that the game was retooled entirely to be a cross promotion for Yume Koju rather than a Mario game.
    The idea to retool the game back into a Mario game for US audiences actually came from the Japanese side of Nintendo. This wasn't a decision brainstormed by Nintendo of America. This is why it was brought back to Japan under the title Super Mario USA, and Nintendo in Japan even considered and still considers that game to be a more accurate reflection of the intended product during development.
    And it's because of this last bit, in some twist of irony, that Japan and Nintendo of Japan in recent years have grown to consider Super Mario USA a more legitimate sequel than Lost Levels was, and Lost Levels these days is essentially considered nothing more than a third quest or DLC for the original game, much like Super Luigi U, as far as Japan is concerned. That's why it's always bundled with the original game in rereleases of the original game like Super Mario Bros Deluxe and the Mario Game & Watch; Nintendo and Japan both consider it a sort of DLC to the original that the game wouldn't be complete without, and not really a legitimate sequel and unique entity.
    Japan as a whole essentially considers Mario 3 to be the second game, while Super Mario USA is a more legitimate sequel in the original 4 works, and Lost Levels is relegated in the public and corporate consciousness to be a DLC of sorts, that Super Luigi U was even conceptually inspired by.
    Also, NoA did actually localize the turtles in Mario Land later as "Bombshell Koopas". So yes, they do actually give them a punny name, just not upon first release.

    It was the first Mario game I actually spent time with and completed. Playing it now I do feel the physics take are quite a bit different to the others but compared to the original Super Mario Bros despite only 4 worlds had a lot more variety with each world having its own theme and different boss and level music. Compared to the NES original which shared music, similar levels and the exact same boss all the way through.
    Although Super Mario World is my favourite in the series this one comes in at a close second.
    Also, I feel that Super Mario Land 1 is a better fit on the Gameboy compared to Super Mario Land 2 due to the second having sprites that are too large for the Gameboy. At the time I loved that the Gameboy game had similar graphics to Super Mario World but now I'm thinking the second game suffers slightly with screen crunch

    I really like this video, and hope you will also touch on SML2 and how different it is. I think you'd have a lot to say that would be interesting.
    That said, it sours my experience when I'm reading the comments and I see someone offering gentle correction, and the video creator overreacts. No one was upset. They just pointed out you were mistaken. Stuff like "It'll be okay" may seem funny, but only makes you seem like a sarcastic.
    If that was the character you were going for in your videos, fine. But, since it's not, I'd suggest keeping an even keel in the comments and not taking someone pointing out a mistake so personally.
    There is no situation where "calm down" or "it's only a joke, bruh" makes things better.
    Again, interested in what you have to say, but I've seen channels die because the creator is too offended by the comments he receives.
    Similarly, I'm only trying to help, so please do not interpret this as an attack, either.
