@@river.z5182 sorry! I havent finished this cardigan yet since i had to adjust the measurements for the person im making it for... so i dont know about how much yarn it'll take
I’ve been looking for a cardigan tutorial to try, and no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find any that made sense to me. I didn’t understand their stitches and patterns, especially the “post” crochets. I found this video and thought, “how can it be a nice detailed tutorial in twelve minutes?” Turns out, this was a really easy to understand video and gave me a lot to work off of. Thanks so much, can’t wait to try this!
thank you so much for this tutorial, i only taught myself how to crochet about a month ago and i wanted to make a cardigan and i found this tutorial so easy to follow and helpful, i finished it today and i love it so much!! ♡
I am definitely giving this a try soon. Im thinking of doing the spaced hdc in black but the normal hdc in another color (maybe red or pink or something idk)
Thank you for this. Two questions: 1 - you state it is 75 stitches wide and then you marked in 37 from each side. 37+37 = 74, but you more than one stitch between your markers. Could you please advise how many stitches you left in the center for the neck? 2 - could you please provide the approx measurements of the final sweater? (Back width, Back length, front panel width, sleeve width, sleeve length) That would really, really help me figure out what size to make. Thank you!
This is exactly what I came to ask bcuz the math is just not mathing … did you ever figure it out. I should have watched the whole video before starting 🤦🏾♀️
hi do you have the measurements for the finished product? I want to make this with a lighter yarn but I don't know how to compare gauge yet. Thank you so much and beautiful cardigan!
Just a heads up for anyone who wears the size L, this cardigan was clearly made to fit “oversized style” on a size S at least.. it would be great if the creator would add the measurements of the finished product in the description! Or at least what size she wore, so we don’t waste time and yarn..
SO VERY HAPPY that you made this comment! I'm a large and on row 3. Thought I'd just watch and jot down her "pattern" . Now I can frog and start a bigger size. ❤
This looks so good. If it’s 75 stitches though and you mark 37 down from either side, that’s the tiniest bit in the middle is it not? And did they increase the amount of stitches in the back panel so it started as 75 and got more orrrr - sorry I’m stupid and struggling a little
I had issues with tension when switching between hdc rows and hdc spacing rows… my back panel looks all wavy since the spacing rows were more tense then the normal hdc rows… I’ll have to restart and use a bigger hook size with the spacing rows I guess🤷♀️. I also really wish you would have mentioned that the stitches increase each time you start the hdc spacing rows. I made sure to keep 75 stitches all the way up which resulted in me not having enough stitches when it came time to make the front panels.
I doubt you’ll see my comment but how did you make both front panels? I believe you made two and showed how to make the first one but how did you go back to make the second? Did you use new yarn, slip stitch down? Idk if this makes since but could you pls help? Thx though for the tutorial
I love this tutorial. Some bits, I've had to go away and look into like the mattress Stitch for joining my sleeves but so far I'm so happy with how it's looking. Thank you for helping me to understand and to trust my process. I'm nearly done. I'm just about to slip Stitch the sides together. Please can I ask how you did the trim for the edges, is it a single crochet all around? Thanks again Erin, I've watched quite a lot of your videos now!! 🥰
I decided to watch the whole video before starting the project and it looks like a very helpful tutorial. I have one question, when you say you only need to "seam off the sides" how is that done?
Usually pieces are connected by lining up edges and using a ‘mattress stitch’ to connect each stitch all the way down. Just look up a video for step by step. 🍀
Hi there!! When I seam off panels I pretty much lay both panels together and line up the edges, then I attach yarn to a large needle and just sew the two panels down the edge. You can also line up the panels and single crochet the two pieces together!!
hey !! how many stiches did you leave for the neck hole? i cant really count in the video and i changed my original foundation chain so i cant copy yours exactly
@@1dundermifflinfinity So she did answer this question in another comment...she made the posts stitches around the neckline but not the hem of the bottom.
i’ve been planning on making this cardigan for around 8 months now, but only now just got the yarn! is there any ribbing for the bottom hem or sides of the front panel? i thought I saw ribbing in the shots of the final product at the end but i wasn’t sure. if there was could you please explain how you did the ribbing?
Thank you for sharing this tutorial with us! I wear a size medium in clothing, however, I do want this cardigan to be pretty oversized. What size is this cardigan that you make? I want to make a size large. How many stitches do I begin with for a size large? Thank you in advance for any advice! Blessings - Misti
Hi!! Sorry it’s taken so long to respond - I am a women’s small and the cardigan ended up being extremely oversized. I would say that it fits a women’s large, but if you want it to be oversized then add a few more inches to your chain when you first begin chaining!
This is so cute and easy! I'm going to make this for my amazing mum! With the back panel how many half double crochet and skipped double crochet rows do we need. Will it make a difference if I do more rows then what you have done?
Hi there! For my cardigan I repeated the HDC and skipped rows 3 times ( so I had 6 total blocks of the pattern) and for the sleeves I repeated the two sections twice ( so 4 blocks) and each section is 11 rows. If it helps at all I am 5" tall and the cardigan hit my mid-thigh!
The easiest way to do it at least for me chain 75 and if it's too small keep adding 10 more chains I did 85 for medium it's slightly oversized but not as oversized as I would have liked but it still feels nice and it's not strangling your arms
Sorry it wasn’t clear, it’s every other row of the spacing! So start the spacing row 1 with hdc and then chain one skip one, for the 2nd row make 2 hdc in a row and then chain one skip one. For the third row alternate back to just one hdc, chain one skip one, and for the 4th row alternate back to 2 hdc in a row!
@@taylorgower4937 yes, just continue to alternate the beginning of the row between one hdc and the next row of 2 hdc. I did this for 11 rows. Then switched back to solid hdc for 11, then back to spacing rows for 11 rows!
Hi!! The way I did this is by just placing one double crochet into each stitch, and where there was a chain space I just placed the double crochet right into the chain space instead of fiddling around into the actual chain!
I am in love with this cardigan! I actually stardted crocheting it right after watching the video :)! Just wanted to ask you, how many stitches did you leave in the middle - for the neck space, when you started the front pannel and also how many stitches did you end up chaining at the very begining? I adjusted the number of chains to my body, but it will help me figure out how many should I leave for the neck space :)
Hi, qq. Im a newbie to crochet and im a little bit confuse. To what size this cardigan u made fits? For the ribbing, aside from in the arm area you also did front back? How many rows for ribbing? And for arms? Thank you..
Making this comment as constructive criticism and my experience working the cardigan, no hate!! For reference: I'm an intermediate crocheter, so this pattern felt semi-beginner friendly. I used 3 Caron Cakes skeins and needed a little extra yarn to finish this cardi. Mine came out a bit "chunkier" and "rigid" so maybe if I had used the yarn she had, it would feel "lighter" and "looser"? Making the panels was super easy, although I did have to adjust the pattern cause I noticed my stitch count was increasing each time I finished the chain space portions, so I just did one decrease when I began a new row of the "solid row". I do appreciate the modeling in the beginning of the video of how the cardi looks on her as well as the back of it (since sometimes that gets forgotten to film)! There is a comment on here that said it's not oversized fitting if you're larger than a small size, which I think would be helpful to mention in the video. Overall, making this cardi with the alternating "blocks" was a nice change of pace for me so that there was some variety for me to work up! Thanks for the free pattern tutorial and hope you have a great day!!
For the front panel, do you alternate the chain spaces with starting the row with 1 hdc and then two hdc on the next row, or is it just 1 hdc for the whole thing? Thank you!
QUESTION!!! DO YOU USE THE SAME EDGING ON THE CARDIGAN OPENING AND BOTTOM AS YOU DID ON THE SLEEVE? AND WHEN YOU DO THE 2ND FRONT PANEL IS THERE A RIGHT AND WRONG SIDE FOR WHEN YOU ATTACH THE YARN? I did this sweater with a stiffer yarn (I was newish to crochet at the time) and it didn’t come out good. When I didn’t see how to finish of the edges of the cardigan, I took the whole thing out. I assume you put the same ribbing on the cardigan opening and bottom that you used on the sleeve. Is that correct? I will remake this in a softer yarn.
You say 5.5mm hook but I see a 5mm hook in your hand. May I ask what size hook you ended up using? Thanks in advance! I love this pattern it's adorable
Can someone explain how to do the front panel? It seems as though you crochet one side of the front panel all the way down. Do I cut the yarn in order to do the other side the same way?
Yes i just joined my yarn to the opposite corner and copied the same steps, but you can create your panel separate and sew the seams together at the top!
Hi. I am really wanting to make this cardigan as I am new to crochet. Can I use a DK weight yarn instead of Worsted as here in the 🇬🇧 this is the most yarn I have in my stash! Will I need to change hook size to use DK weight? Diolch yn fawr from 🏴 x
In the beginning, you went through just the back part of a stitch(I think that’s what it’s called), but then it looked like you went through both parts of the V shape later in the video, so I’m wondering if you just kept going through the back part of the V or changed(even though you would probably tell us)
Hiii I have to ship my materials from out of country I was just wondering how much grams of yarn did you use for this? Im using 8 ply and already used 5 100g yarn but im still short so i was wondering, how much I'd need if I use 5ply yarn instead. Thanks 😁🤗
She used roughly 300 grams, 600metres of yarn. The yarn weight you are using should be okay, going down to 5ply may not help I suggest using a bigger hook size if you’re using that much yarn. Try to go for a 5-5.5mm hook instead. It should help get the sizing correct
Has anyone made this cardigan? I just finished the back panel. The sides are rather wavy where the stitch changes from hdc to hdc skip 1 hdc. How did it turn out when stitched together, does it remain wavy. I’m a little reluctant to continue. Can anyone advise.
Hi!! Yes my cardigan panels were the same way, had a little bit of wave to them but once I joined them to their respective front panels I couldn’t see the wave anymore. If the wave is super obvious it could be due to your tension, I had to loosen mine up quite a bit on the chain one rows as well!
@@itserinb thank you for replying . It looks like yours when it’s lying flat. Have come this far might as well go for it and see what happens. Is his your own pattern?
Hi I love this cardigan but but confused, when you chain 2 at start of row an turn, are you then half double into that same chain two stitch, as you saying hdc into first st. Does this not then make for increasing. Please help. An thank you for sharing this tutorial.
To be honest the cardigan is very oversized on me, (I’m a small roughly) so I don’t think you’d have to change the pattern at all and it would still be oversized on a medium fit!
hii what are the measurements, since yarn is different in size and stuff!! lovely video but would like if you also added like the how many inches the cardigan etc ☹️☹️💓
Hey im a beginner and I really love this tutorial but I have a question how did you like switch sides for the front panel. Like I mean you marked 37 Stichtes on both sides and then you started to crotchet the one side and how did you go to the other mark to do that side ?
Hi! I after I finished the first panel I just attached my yarn at the other side and began working the other panel in the same exact way! I started at the corner edge and worked inward 💓
I love this cardigan and the pattern, I really want to make it but there's no pattern available for reference or gauge info to check gauge with. I'm hesitant to make this without being able to check gauge first, I've made garments without checking gauge and they have turned out too small or too big
I love this cardigan! I wanted to ask if it was possible to keep the whole cardigan one pattern? I have tried to do the alternating pattern like you did, but I mess up every time.
I’m sure you could stick to the regular half double crochet for the whole pattern. Just skip the chain 1 skip a stitch. For the body she had six panels of 11 rows. So that would just be 66 rows of regular half double crochet. Then another 66 for each half of the front panels. And 44 rows of hdc for each sleeve panel.
Sorry to ask!, Your first chain 2 does not count as A stitch?, If not. I don't have 4 stitches for neck space.....?, Little confused!, So very sorry, please help x
Hi there! I’m not sure where you’re seeing 8 balls for the pattern, but I used a little less than 3 skeins total of the Red Heart Soft yarn. Each skein is 10oz, so I used less than 30oz of that yarn!!
@@itserinb And did you do this for the whole cardigan, or just the neckline and you left the bottom the way it was? I am sorry but it is not 100% clear to me from the video :)
@@itserinb Thank you for your reply :)! Could you please also tell me how many stitches did you leave in the middle for the neck space, when you started the front pannel? And how many did you end up chaining in the very begining? ☺️
I love this cardigan and have started to crochet it but when I get to row 13, I follow the instructions and my crocheting starts to pucker up. I asked a friend to look at it and she found the same. Have you got any advice as to how I can stop this from happening?
Mine kept getting waves in the half double crochet rows too! I also didn’t realize the stitches would increase as you did the hdc spacing rows so I ended up with the wrong amount of stitches when it came to making the front panels… go figure! I assume the wavy tension issue can be resolved with switching to a bigger hook when doing the hdc spacing rows since those seem smaller!
i'm having issues when transitioning back from the open space hdc to the original hdc... somehow i'm decreasing on stitches from 77 down to 73 and i'm not sure why... any advice?
I forgged the whole thing because of how wavy the lines were (the spaces lines are always smaller than the regular) just to realize her lines were wavy too 💀✋ help- also did you add a border?
Hi I love this so much omg! I get really cold very easily, so you think I could just skip out the gap rows and do it all half double or would that make it too weighty/affect the pattern? X
for me, i used 198 grams of yarn per ball and it took me 4 balls. i don’t have any left over for the cuffs or the neckline ribbing so i’m going to be using a different colour
Love the final result! Definitely gonna try this out 🤍
Hope it turns out great!! 🤍

Hii how do you add the second front part ? Plss replyy
For the front panel, do you alternate the chain spaces with starting the row with 1 hdc and then two hdc on the next row, or is it just 1 hdc for the whole thing? Thank you!
Hi 👋🏾 im making this cardigan, and when you start the front panel how many 11rows clusters did you do all together!? Thank you for this Tutorial🌸🌸
How long did it take to complete? Thankyou for so clear instructions
Making this right now except I don’t really like the spaces will it still be fine without the spaces?
Yes of course! Make the whole thing with the same first 11 rows 🥰
how did you rib the rest of the cardigan?
You say 5.5mm hook but I see a 5mm hook in your hand. May I ask what size hook you ended up using? Thanks in advance! I love this pattern it's adorable
What is the border you have around the cardigan?
I found this to be really pretty but you leave out a lot of important details. Please put a more detailed description of the process.
About how long did anyone make their back panel? I have a hard time judging size.
hey it took me 3 days to finish the back panel. but i did make the widith about 100 stitches. keep in mind i crochet very slow :) hoped this helped
@@itserinb thank you
You did a great job at explaining how you made this. Thank you for the easy to understand tutorial.
So so glad you liked it!! Thank you 💓
I libe the way this looks. I want to make one for my wife, do you by any chance have the patterns written down that i can have?
woahhht this looks so nice
@@---rh1og what ply has she used in the video?
@@sameekshasharma630 she used red heart soft yarn so maybe u can check that one out?
@@---rh1og but what ply is not mentioned :(
Has anyone made this cardigan?
Awesome tutorial. I'm gonna try it now 😇😇
What's the yardage of this cardigan? How many skeins of Red Heart did you use? thank you!
Hi I love this cardigan but but confused, when you chain 2 at start of row an turn, are you then half double into that same chain two stitch, as you saying hdc into first st. Does this not then make for increasing. Please help. An thank you for sharing this tutorial.
Has anybody ever told you you have a resemblance with Allie DiMeco🥰 Great pattern!! Thank you!

How many chains do you think I should do for the back panel and the sleeves if I wanted to make a medium?
To be honest the cardigan is very oversized on me, (I’m a small roughly) so I don’t think you’d have to change the pattern at all and it would still be oversized on a medium fit!
@@itserinb ok thank you! I can’t wait to make it
Yes!! Please tag me in your finished work so I can see it. Thank you! @erin_reiko 🤍
@@itserinb what about for a large?
Would this work with a double crochet instead of a half and if so how many rows for each section if it 11 for a half double
Hi! Is there a written patten anywhere?? I love the video, but also like a pattern to take notes and follow. TIA
Hi!! I don’t currently have a written pattern, sorry!! 🤎
hii what are the measurements, since yarn is different in size and stuff!! lovely video but would like if you also added like the how many inches the cardigan etc ☹️☹️💓
I know this was over a year ago but what size yarn did you use and do you think it would be ok to use red heart ombré?
Hey im a beginner and I really love this tutorial but I have a question how did you like switch sides for the front panel. Like I mean you marked 37 Stichtes on both sides and then you started to crotchet the one side and how did you go to the other mark to do that side ?
Hi! I after I finished the first panel I just attached my yarn at the other side and began working the other panel in the same exact way! I started at the corner edge and worked inward 💓
@@itserinb oh okay thank you so much 💕
I love this cardigan and the pattern, I really want to make it but there's no pattern available for reference or gauge info to check gauge with. I'm hesitant to make this without being able to check gauge first, I've made garments without checking gauge and they have turned out too small or too big
can i ask can i use milk cotton yarn on making this?
Hey, would it be ok if i used a 5mm hook instead of 5.5mm?
I love this cardigan! I wanted to ask if it was possible to keep the whole cardigan one pattern? I have tried to do the alternating pattern like you did, but I mess up every time.
I’m sure you could stick to the regular half double crochet for the whole pattern. Just skip the chain 1 skip a stitch.
For the body she had six panels of 11 rows. So that would just be 66 rows of regular half double crochet. Then another 66 for each half of the front panels. And 44 rows of hdc for each sleeve panel.
@@KnitsByNayla Thank you so much! That really helps!
what did you do for the trimming on the front panel
Also interested to know how you finished off with the trim of the cardigan around the raw edges. Thanks
4:57
How did you connect the arms to the body?? I’m lost at that part. Did you just slip stitch it?
I used the mattress Stitch for attaching my sleeves, hope this helps
Sorry to ask!, Your first chain 2 does not count as A stitch?, If not. I don't have 4 stitches for neck space.....?, Little confused!, So very sorry, please help x
Hi!! My chain 2s never count as a stitch, so I chain 2 and then place a stitch in the first space always!
@@itserinb Thank you so much for feedback!!!!, Starting this weekend, waiting for wool, anticipating 🤣👌🤩
So the pattern says 8 balls for a size Small but the above materials call for 3 skeins. Which is right??
Hi there! I’m not sure where you’re seeing 8 balls for the pattern, but I used a little less than 3 skeins total of the Red Heart Soft yarn. Each skein is 10oz, so I used less than 30oz of that yarn!!
How many rows of space chain did you make??
Hey Erin, did you rib the bottom?
What would be the measurements for an X-Large oversized?
Would that be a OS or more of a S/M?
I would say it’s more of a OS, the cardigan ended up being pretty huge on me, so it’s definitely oversized!
What did you do for the neckline may i ask? The result is so cute omw making it right now!!
I went back and added a couple rows of the ribbing (just like I did with the cuffs) with the front and back post stitch!
@@itserinb And did you do this for the whole cardigan, or just the neckline and you left the bottom the way it was? I am sorry but it is not 100% clear to me from the video :)
@@wendycizlerova2971 hi just the neckline! But it’s up to you if you want to add it to the bottom as well!
Can i use 100% cotton yarn?
What size did u crochet? Like was it a medium or a large?
I would say it’s definitely more like a large, I’m usually around a small and I like my cardigans oversized and baggy!
@@itserinb ok thank you so much!
how much yarn does this use up?
for me, i used 198 grams of yarn per ball and it took me 4 balls. i don’t have any left over for the cuffs or the neckline ribbing so i’m going to be using a different colour
How did you do the border around d the neck a d front pa els
