    Don't worry, when Boruto ends, we'll have a prequel on Boruto's dad which will become a big hit and be known as a classic in many years.

      +Fro4show Yeah, it's fucking sad that the medium that produces so many amazingly creative and unique shows , by the way pretty much the only medium that consistently puts out narrative driven, often experimental and high-concept multiple episode shows, let alone animations (the west pretty much only has Breaking Bad, Avatar etc.), comes at the price of basically sweat shop level work conditions and pay.

      Venom Stains nice joke lmao. You totally forgot to mention all the moe, loli and meaningless slice of life garbage that makes up 99% of the "amazing medium" known as anime. For every one decent show, there's 1000 trash shows being produced. Don't pretend like you don't know that.

      Indeed. That's why it's more important than ever to look at what anime might be for you and then give those anime a chance with 3 episode rule to see if they are worth your time to continue. With that method I have found lot of anime that I have ended up liking and only some that I have ended up dropping. Then again it helps me that some times I just enjoy silly anime like Kantai Collection and Girls & Panzer.

      Yeah, both the anime and the video game scene is getting diluted pretty fast...

    • @tawnyh8878
      @tawnyh8878 7 років тому

      Hollywood and mainstream media tend to oversaturate something and want to water it down just to make more money are the anime fans? Not really they're just there to make money off of a genre that they see fit to make the money. We is anime fans and anime experts like Akata to spread the love and knowledge of anime and call him out when they make a suck ass American version like Netflix death note

    • @MaxRavenclaw
      @MaxRavenclaw 7 років тому

      Ironically, I feel that the movie industry isn't facing such a sharp decrease in quality, probably because it's an older industry and it's dilution happened very slowly. Maybe it's also because it got the chance to grow before the internet changed things as it did recently. I mean, there's still a fair number of good and artistic films out there, but quality anime and games are becoming less prevalent. I mean, what's artistic games have come out recently? DDLC? Undertale? Anime is slightly better off, with stuff like HeroAca and Made in Abyss, but I fear that the more popular mass appeal anime will eventually drown the artistic ones. Just as Arkada said about Made in Abyss in the video.

    I think that simply the status of a "classic anime" became unattainable by seasonal modern shows, and that these good shows (like Made in Abyss, Shinsekai Yori, etc...) are "modern classics", which means they aren't subjects to constant discussions like Evangalion or Serial Experiment Lain. They're still shows that when a friend says he hasn't watched, every decent anime fan would recommend that friend to watch this modern classic, but they'll move on from it once they watched it, not giving it as much importance/relevance as Cowboy Bebop.

      It's more like there are so many anime being done seasonally, more so than Hollywood movies and Television series that you don't allow yourself the time to fully appreciate the good series that you once watched, as our attention is always on the next big thing.
      I've noticed this a few months back and it makes me sad, because even though I fully enjoyed some of those anime, I also realised that they are something I will soon forget, and because everyone has moved on, there's very little in the way for it to be known as a classic, as classics are those which are talked about for many years to come.

    • @heychrisfox

      This @eunro. Kyoukai no Kanata was a good example of this. It was seen as a critical success, and is honestly one of the best in the season that it aired (same year as Log Horizon, Kill la Kill, Kuroko no Basket, etc). But it got overlooked by so many people because there was just SO MANY other shows. The sheer volume makes things impossible to keep up with.

    • @Thezftw
      @Thezftw 7 років тому +1

      But it was only one of the best. The three others you listed were quite good as well and honestly, Kill la Kill is just more memorable than Kyoukai no Kanata in both good and bad...

  • @RogerSmith2004
    @RogerSmith2004 7 років тому +128

    Personally, I've always been one to watch hidden gems and older shows nobody talks about, mostly because I'm always looking through creators I like and trying to find their older works. Or even with these obscure shows, I like trying to find meanings in the shows that a lot of people may have not thought about, due to the fact that the shows aren't very popular. It's like each show is almost a mystery, and I love that element to it. Especially early to mid 2000s anime is my favorite era to search for, mostly because people tend to ignore early digital shows due to their sometimes odd production values. Plus, through doing this, I have found tons of shows in my favorites that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. I really enjoyed Melody of Oblivion and Hakaba Kitaro, for example, and they are still shows that stick with me almost a year after watching it, in spite of how obscure they may be to the casual viewer.
    I understand that people always look to seasonal shows to find the "latest, greatest thing", and I watch my fair share of seasonals as well, but I find searching for hidden gems just as gratifying. I feel like in this constant struggle to keep up with modern anime, people kind of forget about the long run. It's more about just finding those simple pleasures for the time being until the next show comes out. Which is all well and good, like I said, I enjoy watching seasonal shows, but I think there's also a lot of interesting qualities to old anime which people miss out on. Both to the "acclaimed classics" as well as the "hidden gems". And to me, I think it's also important to value these long term favorites. Create experiences with your entertainment that will stick with you and improve you as a person from watching it. I don't want "the seasonal cycle" to rob people of this opportunity.

      It is fun to talk about a current airing show, especially stuff like Made in Abyss where more you get some deeper discussions. Also there are a lot more people to discuss it with than normally (flood the forums sometimes a bit too much for my taste).
      Thing is watching seasonal shows is very risky because there is always a chance that it will turn out bad (look at Kado the Wrong Fucking Answer), plus a lot of shows will keep you hanging without a continuation (manga/LN bait). That is why I usually try to watch shows that are confirmed to be good and shows that seem to be less known
      There are a at least two types of seasonal watchers, that come to mind. First are the new anime watchers who do just pick up whatever series they at least like and is popular enough, they are the type of which switch attention (practically forgetting what they watched before) from season to season and I would label them as casual fans really, since they are not really prepared to look for anything more than what is currently airing and they are here because its a trend.
      Second there are some old anime fans that have watched almost everything they think is a classics and are now looking for something else to hold their interest (some go into new shows, some look for old hidden gems). Now these I would call anime veteran, they usually have some defined standards on what they enjoy, but are still prepared to try some stuff that the community its nothing special.
      I am also certain there are some people who avoid seasonally watching anime like the plague and view only stuff that is proven to bee good because they do not want to waste their time on something mediocre or bad.
      Personally I do not think it's too bad as long as you remember what you enjoy and are not just following from one trend to another like a mindless sheep. In the long run we can possibly also expect some improvements in the medium itself which is always good.

      not the greats but the ones with lasting value. Anime is becoming like Hollywood. Great anime like Made in Abyss which like Arkada said is classic material is getting forgotten due to not having a lasting value due to the more franchise based anime gobbling up it's popularity.

    • @kyras4212
      @kyras4212 7 років тому +5

      I'd argue something can have lasting value even if it isn't part of a franchise. The problem is that the shows with lasting appeal will generally be those that try to explore deeper subjects/themes (ie: Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain) while simpler shows that may be great fun to watch simply won't be remembered because there's plenty of other shows that are also great fun to watch. The exception being shows that push the bounds of the medium, those are also likely to be remembered (even if only by a more niche crowd). A show like Psycho-Pass is regarded as a modern classic because there was more to watching than just a good time or shock value.
      And to be clear, I don't believe there's anything wrong with popcorn-media. I adore Nolan films despite them having no deeper themes or messages (at least lately), but I wouldn't consider them classics.

    1) There is amazing looking manga to read (dont fucking say you cant read black and white pages you filthy casual)
    2) Summer season was a trash full of slice-of-life/harem/highschool shit so it literally had Hero Academia and Recreators lasting from spring + 1 original title (MiA)

    • @svenhent
      @svenhent 7 років тому +1

      I enjoyed the show as much as you do, though the two points you mentioned there was actually kind of answered itself. There's quite a lot of anime-only viewers so they probably don't care much about source materials and their reception (Sadly). Also some people I came across felt the pacing in the middle of Made in Abyss slower, which somehow related them to SoL series (and yes, I couldn't quite fathom this as well) and thus lowering their hype for the show.
      Regardless, that's my solid nomination for anime of 2017 up to current concluded seasons.

    For me, when I started into anime I wanted to watch entire shows that I could binge while studying in college. My friend recommended several classic shows: Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Code Geass, the Evangelion movies... So I started at the classics and moved into the seasonal shows. Where I promptly found a large vein of Season 2s that required me to go back and watch the first ones. In all honesty, I still use a similar method when getting other people into it. Mixing both old classics and new seasonal shows into recommendations. But that just me and my friends.

    I like a mix of both. currently im watching the Ancient Magus's Bride, Food Wars season 3 and in the meantime while i wait for new episodes, i picked up cardcaptor sakura again to finish. My friend is also educating me on digimon which has been interesting and i may even watch the old series with her. So I certainly think that new anime doesnt kill old anime, because i see both talked about equally. Even with new anime this past year, my hero academia and even death parade has the greatest potential to be a classic, so i feel theres diamonds in the rough. It can certainly hinder the chances sure, but not completely kill classics. It all matters on word of mouth i guess.

    This is my biggest problem with these new anime fans. I personally watch many genres and I don't find any problem with things being "forgotten" by a constant flow of anime each season. Those who watch anime for enjoyment rather than to try and be trendy, very shallow might I add, will go and check out those better shows that were once popular. Either by finding them on MAL or A-P by searching popular shows or through recommendations from sites or friends.
    It's definitely true that things are forgotten fast and will not catch the eye of most, but again, this is ONLY those who dip their toes into anime only to leave it a few years, or even months, later.
    We should be taking notice of how this sudden popularity of anime, yet with these fans coming and going so fast, affects the market and what seems in demand. Since they are not "true" anime fans(lack of a better term, I suppose) they view what is less "anime" to them, AOT, SAO, and it's popularity bursts yet years later they are gone. I'd say this affects things more. Netflix, Amazon and Sony are all in anime now. How does this bode for long term anime fans? I have no idea, but if in a few years a large amount of fans suddenly disappear and die out, well...
    Anywho, great video.

    I like being able to talk about it in a "what is new" frame, and it allows for a more balanced approach due to what is discussed is defendant on time rather than quality. Everyone can agree on time, but not on quality, and thus everyone can talk about anime in the same frame. Discussing classics is usually a shitfest because the cancer of fandom has been festering too long.

    I think something needs to be said about "production" and anime quality. Personally i prefer some of the old styles of cell animation then the newer CG style of animation they used today. its gotten to a point where its far less inspiring to watch recent anime now and yes every once in a while you will find an ambitious show that goes above and beyond expectations to deliver great quality and art. But there is just to many shows these days are over saturated with CG and styles i think are not as organic as some of the older anime's where. This is something that has not aged well over the years. My personal opinion.

      If you want some recommendations, here's my favorites: Berserk 90's version (preferably the manga), Monster, Fate Zero, Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter 2011 and FMA Brotherhood as you mentioned.
      There's also other really great series like: Kaiji, Shiki, Steins Gate, Psycho Pass (first season only), Parasyte the Maxim, Death Parade.
      Then there's shows i feel are a bit similiar to Evangelion, not my taste but you might wanna check them out: Welcome to the NHK, Shinsekai Yori, Wolf's Rain, Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, Texhnolyze, Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

    Seasonal anime is such a double edged sword.
    Pro: instant entertainment gradification
    Con: no room for classics to be noticed or formed
    I honestly think because seasonal anime became a "thing", studios aren't taking the time to form "classics" because of the high demand for mainstream anime. If studios could create an anime that has the element of emersion, then we can get the ball rolling in achieving groundbreaking, classic story telling in japanese animation.

    Even at .5 M subs, you are still speaking to a very small fan base. Go to Mojo and you will see "Your Name." at $5M domestic gross and by all standards that is one of the greatest animes and the rest of the world at $350M gross also thinks that. And if one sees that as domestic dislike of animation well "Despicable Me 3" at $263M (on no ones best list) disproves. Foreign films have always been segregated to the art house circuit. And anime is about as foreign as you can get!
    Even with a poor English dub which often times plays like "Whats up Tiger Lily" , anime is still just too foreign and intentionally "arty" for the domestic audience whose lusts range for those K people, Justin Beiber, and Miley Cyrus.

    Er... so after watching this video a few times, I am guessing you are basically blaming the internet for allowing people watching every anime available from Japan literally simultaneously, such that people cannot afford their attentions to the classics that they did not get to grow up with. And new animes keeps coming and bombarding them, such that there is no such thing as classic anymore. Well sorry, but that's just how anime/manga work in japan forever. In the sea of junk anime/manga, u would get classics from time to time. And now you are worried that people are overwhelmed coz you guys get to access the goods and bads overseas and is shortening your attention span, *awww*. Need not worry about not having new classics or old classic dying. What we think to be classics from our youth doesn't need to be classics for the youngsters. I hate pokemon/digimon/yugioh and gave limited love to bleach/naruto/one peace but younger kids love them. Plus, at times you would have classics that would last for generations to come. Look at Doraemon, Case Closed or KochiKame, Heck, I grew up with them in the 90s, and now there are kids who still go crazy for them, at least in Asia. Sorry for being blunt, but your point is kinda moot.

      no you're wrong it's not killing anime it's killing the potential for an anime to become a classic.

      It's the same as people wanting several modern movies to be classics, but their statements gets swept under the rugs of more hyped and popcorn movies coming out every season.

    Never watched seasonal anime Il just wait till it comes out on blu ray/streaming sites to check it out/trying to keep up with them seasonally/weekly is too much work plus I rather support the industry as well then illegally see it/yes it's affecting anime

    IMO, one punch man has the making of a classic and is currently becoming one.
    The discussion on the show has died down since it's original release, but I still see new people go into it and talk about it on a regular enough basis.

    i notice based of what you've said you and me have different ideas of classics.to me classic is darker than black since i think it was original at the time as well as angel beats, future diary and gundam being my first experiences with those genres.

    An easy way of keeping good anime classics nowadays: turn them into meme(s).

    I love the classics, and older anime. and typically I would rather wait until an anime has finished airing before I get into it so that I can watch more than one episode a week. Though there are times when I do watch as it airs.

    Anyone know the lovely song at 7:25?
    And great video. I agree that looking backwards every time you need a break is easier than wading through what might be worth your time. Currently reading Erased, watching Mushishi, watching Natsume Yuujinchou, and finishing Bungaku Shoujo. May not be pre-2000, but at least they offer a casual experience and they are series worth thinking about after the conclusion.

    You're totally right Arcada, I started to notice a couple of years ago with my favorite series of 2014 and 2015, only a couple of months after they ended, not a lot of people were talking about them. This's a sad reality we live in now.

    Hoenstly, a girl i know simply wont watch any anime before 2015. She just said there all bad despite being the building blocks of some of her favorites.
    It just sucks that even now, some stand outs get forgotten just because it ends then a new show with far less depth comes along and gets more popular for no real reason. Or just shit memes that 90% of people dont get

    I often question the patron thanking. Not because it’s bad to do so, but the lines “I couldn’t do this without you”
    Like would the channel close due to not having the time to make the videos when you need a different job or what?

      Some older shows that i would highly recommend if you are looking to get into classic or older animes are:
      Neon Genesis Evangelion (90's tv series not the ova series)
      End Of Evangelion (If you liked the show and want to see the real ending)
      Cowboy Bebop
      Trigun
      Lupin The 3rd (Part 2/3)
      FLCL
      Yu-yu Hakusho
      Ranma 1/2
      Berserk (1997)
      Escaflowne
      ah my goddess
      Patlabor (try the first movie to see what you think)
      Ninja Scroll
      Akira
      Ghost In The Shell
