Thank you for teaching people about how an ecosystem works rather than how to dump dirt in a glass box it's refreshing to see someone making an informative video who actually has information! Haha
Thanks man! I love what I do.
In my bioactive vivarium for my corn snakes, I actually use a food grade food thermometer to check the soil temp. Quick easy to read and fairly accurate.
Smart!
i use a thermometer i got for free during covid, it’s a contactless forehead thermometer but also has an ambient temp and surface temp thermometer that are very useful!
Great info, thanks for the effort you put into your videos. If i may make a couple of suggestions for future content:
1 Dont stand in front of a window, you re always backlit and the tank is almost non existent. Get a couple of your Leds, get the table to the opposite corner of the room and ler the cameraman stand in front of the window, facing you and the action.
2 tank lights on! i see you did it on the beardie setup, and its literally night to day!
3 camera needs to.be closer to you and the tank, we all want to see you work and tweak and rearrange the elements in the tank, again, better job with the beardie vid.
In summary, great content, you just need to let it shine, as much as we all love that white cabinet 😆cheers
Great video, these points are very good constructive criticism. Also, please get the cameraman a bipod, I was getting slightly nauseous from the feeling of a boat rocking back and forth. Great information and products.
Definitely getting one for a new ball python soon! I love this whole concept, and it's much cheaper than other options.
Need to link video for "other dudes" update on how well it worked out for his snake. Though I was with the understanding that you should allow the mini ecosystem to take for few weeks before introducing your snake.
Awesome,another great review and setup!!!
Hello!
Fantastic! My BP just turned 1 year and I had plans to switch him to a PVC enclosure, from the tub he's in right now. I just stumbled across this yesterday doing some more research into options. I subbed immediately. I'm so impressed with this! I want to change my snake over immediately, but you don't ship to Canada. Sad days :(
very interesting points made...good to have animals in a natural environment vs plastic...
I have been in love with snakes since I could remember. My parents were super scared of them so I was never able to keep one as a child. I'm about to move into my own apartment, and my landlord is allowing me to obtain a ball python. I was excited but scared because I have never owned a snake before and I want it to be healthy. Your video just made me super confident to 1. Take care of my snake, and 2. How to make sure it is comfortable. Thank you so much.
Btw: most of my animals are named after pokemon, so of course I will name him/her Ekans.

Great video Josh!
Very educational
How long does it take for a BioActive setup to establish itself?
I would legit work for you if you were close enough. SW VA for me. great mission, Josh!
Thank you very much!
You are so much more nervous in the beginning of this video with this guy here vs your others 🤣🤣😂😂 just be yourself brotha, good video keep up the amazing work.
great video, very informative
Glad you enjoyed it
41 minute video... better get the popcorn lol
Lmao 😂
Yeah I didn’t have that much patience I skipped ahead and probably missed the best stuff.
Could you do an update on your Ball Pythons and how they're doing in this enclosure and how long they've been in there? I'm considering doing this for my snake so I'm very interested in people's results. Do they eat better in this than other types of enclosures?
I sure can. Just give me a few weeks,
Thank you so much! I found someone to make a custom breeder size cage for me and I have some really cool ideas for the inside.
I think it would be great to do a regular feature on this channel on different people's Ball Python set-ups with regular follow-ups.
Although I see some people posting here and there that they're starting to do theirs this way I really haven't seen many doing videos and those that do usually only show the initial set-up at the very beginning; not 6 months, a year, or two years later. I have a gut feeling that this might be the wave of the future, and there could be some very important data to be gleaned by people documenting their progress and their snake's behavior.
IAMGiftbearer I'm very interested in seeing this as well
Yes, I'm getting another snake soon to breed to my female in the future, so this would really be helpful. I hope everything's OK. I want to design a pond in my enclosure too so that the snake can soak when it wants to. I'd like to get one of those liners that people use in outdoor ponds but not near as big. Not sure if pond supply places make them the size for a reptile cage or if I'm going to have to look for someone to do a custom one of those too. I'm thinking they probably make a mold and pour the shell into it. It would be great if Josh sold those in his store!

Do you recommend using expanding foam, to say add a Hollow cork above for them to climb to, while using bioactive?
Do you know what kind of fern you used there ? I am trying to find a good one at a bio seller in Switzerland but there are soooooo many I have no idea which one would be the best.
Did Adrian ever do any update videos? If so, where can I find them? It took me a while to find him and Crossbones Corns on Social Media to begin with.
Would love to see you set up a bioactive 65 gallon for a ball python
Hi I'd love to get a follow up review from the guy on the right about the bioactive setup. 😊
Your tanks are amazing. I havnt really found anyone else who does this. All your videos habe helped me in so many ways. I was wondering if you could do a video on a bioactive vivarium for a nile monitor.
Is it hard to get your snake out of the hides once the bioactive is established? And all the roots are grown in?
I liked because of that catch 3:26
When he moves the plants and realize he was hideing the cute little baby😍😍
Is the bio active transferable to a larger tank later, as long as u add more substrate etc. to meet the volume size needs of the larger tank? TIA
Richard Smedley yes
Do you have an under tank heater on this set up?
about how many springtails and isopods do you put in?
What is the plant with purple under the leaves? You sent me one with my BP kit, and I love it! It is constantly blooming with little white flowers!
Melodyoftheforest I believe that is an Fittonia
How long does it take for the poop to be broken down and what about the urates? How is that cleaned? Solid and liquid form?
Haydee, not long - your tank just needs to get established. Most urates will need to be pulled but the feces and shed breaks down very fast.
Do springtails and isopods come in the kit?
How many inches of substrate do you need for a bioactive ball python enclosure?
Seen u at the Nola show man I was so siked
It was a good show!
if the substrate is 3-4 inches, how would that affect the under tank heater? if its that high of substrate, does the heater have to be stuck on the side?
Joey I like to place them on the side. There is some thought that it messes with digestion but belly heat and reptiles is a myth, reptiles thermoregualte through ambient heat, not surface, so putting it on the side does help when you have a deep layer of substrate
Iv'e been researching ball python and bearded dragon cage setups for awhile now and your whole concept and company is AMAZING. I'm going to purchase bioactive kits from your website for sure! I have one question though. What happens when you upgrade cages? Can you transfer over the BioActivity from the smaller vivitarium, but just add the more soil, biodegradable, and plants to make it the right quantity? Or do you really have to buy a whole other BioActive Kit which costs some money?
Also, does buying more isopods and springtails including the the 2 tubs you get in the BioActivity make the process of getting the ecosystem ready faster? And how long does the biodegradable leaves last before having to add more? Thnx.
You can most definetly transfer, he's done it in newer videos. You do not need to buy a whole new kit, just extra bags of substrate and more plants if you so desire. As of the biodegradables, you would add more if I remember correctly about every six months (perhaps even more) depending on how quickly it gets broken down by the springtail and isopod cultures.
To get a much better and more reliable response, e-mail Josh, just visit the website and e-mail him
Nice tank
Thank you Raging Mass (hahaha)
What kind of bioactive substrate and setup will work best for a Chameleon,if any???
I usually use the Fauna or Flora. Soon I will be launching Acrylic Chameleon trays that fit all standard Exo Terra or Zoo Med screen cages. I will be offering bioactive chameleon kits with live chameleon trees for them.
What all is included in the kit? I visited your website but I didn't see a list if what is included in the ball python kit. I'm interested in starting a bioactive enclosure, but I want to make sure I have everything I need at the same time.
Here ya go
www.thebiodude.com/collections/snake-bioactive-kit/products/ball-python-snake-bioactive-kit
can i feed my ball pyhone in the terrarium and will the isopods and sprintails mess with the snake? if i pick up my ball pythone will it have the bugs on it
Nope.
How long should I allow the plants/ isopods/springtails to establish before it is safe to put my ball python in?
Hi Aquafish. You can let your biome sit and establish as long as you like, or you can introduce them right away. It's up to you and will not hurt anything.
Very interesting habitat! It looks great! What about poop? Will that biodegrade or should that be taken out as it normally would?
I take it out as I normally would initially, but after a while it becomes pretty much self maintaining as far as fecal decomposition etc.
Thanks. :-) When you first set it up does it take a few weeks before they can do it on their own? And then once they get to that point how long after each poop does it take to be fully eradicate that waste? I'm getting my second ball python soon and seriously considering doing this.
I have a rainbow boa, and I know they are humidity sensitive, its a young female and I wouls love to see the products you would have for her type, and also how you would do one of your live terrariums
also would definitely work for you on this, its a great idea and just seeing the animals get to know nature in a sense is ideal, instead of fake plants rocks they need a taste of nature as well as their more outdoorsy family
Aiden, go ahead and email me and I can get you all setup!
Once I get this, will I ever have to get it again? Like stock up on it? Or once I get it am I good to go?
You are good to go as long as you follow the maint. on the soil.
That's the guy that runs Ball Python Enthusiasts on Facebook....would love to see an update...especially with how anti-tank/tub only approach they promote in their forums.....maybe they'll finally see the light going bioactive with an enriching and stimulating environment...
I am working on it!
do the kits come with the springtails and isopods or are they sold separately?
they come in the kits
No, they include bio shot which does the same things.
Would it be okay if I set up my vivarium a few months before I get my snake? Any cons in doing that?
Hi Jourdan. You can absolutely set it up early. There are no cons. This will give your soil plenty of time to get well established.
I know this is late but would really appreciate a reply, once I set all of this up willi need to buy food for the bugs or will I just have to look after my snake like normal without having to clean the tank
The bugs will populate in the tank itself. You will only need to provide biodegradeables. : )
The Bio Dude Josh Halter thank you, do I have to buy them separate and how much do I give them :)
I really want to see those updates Adrian promised
So do i!
Same
What timer would you recommend for two tanks (both with two lights on a 12hr cycle
Any timer would work.
Maybe smart plugs that you can use with home automation.
Hi, bio dude, do you ship to Mexico?
Somehow got sugar ants in my bio active set up. How would I get rid of them?
I have no idea! I am sorry!
How much of the firma do you suggest for a 90 gallon- having 4-5 inches of substrate?
Hi Aqua Fish. I would be able to give you a better recommendation with the dimensions of the floor print.

Is setting up a bioactive vivarium for a young ball python okay? Ultimately I want to keep her in a bioactive setup and obviously do not want to have to keep moving the bioactive to larger and larger setups as she grows. Is it okay to create a large setup for her to grow into and put her in as a baby?
From what I’ve been told and what I’ve seen online, you need a ton of hiding spaces everywhere and not a lot of open area if you want to put a baby ball in a large setup. Large setups can stress them out quite a lot if they feel exposed, but if you can make them feel cozy it’ll be fine.
set it up in a basic 10 gallon until it get over 800 grams but make your bio active setup once you get it so once your snake is big enough the tank will be established
Will putting a UTH under the tank work as effectively with the tera substrate as putting it in the side of the tank ?
Hey hey! so no, putting the pad under the tank will not penetrate the substrate layers like putting it on the side would, this set up at this time WITH the heating pad was for an extra heat option, i would recommd using a CHE on top regulated with a thermostat and then supplimenting if necesary, however most new CHEs can carry the heat you need!! hope this helps!! please reach out for any other questions!!! www.thebiodude.com/collections/reptile-heat-bulbs
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter my main concern is my python getting to cold because the tank is in my room and my family likes the temp around 65 66 at night. I was thinking of just getting a ceramic bulb for him at night because the heat pad even on a thermostat is not getting the temp of the tank past 73 degrees.
Not even the hotspot gets to 75 degrees at night
Trying to keep it in the low to mid 80s.would the ceramic heat bulb be a good option to raise the temp ?
Should I let the terrafirma dry first? Worried about scale rot
Hey there, you can absolutely let it dry some if it is a bit too wet, you definitely want to monitor it with a hygrometer though! www.thebiodude.com/products/vivarium-electronics-digital-thermometer-hygrometer
Do you need a heat pad or heat rock for a ball python in this setup?
chris c heat rocks are not reliable nor recommended for any
Ball Python set up
You cannot regulate their temperature like you can with a pad which would make the heat rock far too hot severely burning the snake
I don't know whether to go bioactive or not. Is the snake not going to be as happy in a normal terrarium?
The snake is usually happier in bio.
why does your cameraman stand so far away, id like to see in the enclosure while youre building
When is this going to be available again?
Hey there, if we dont have the kits in stock online, they can still put a kit together for you. Give the store a call directly to get the quote. 717- 305-0684
great vid as allways dude how about a video on best times to turn on and off lights and best times to have your mister turn on and off best times to feed those kind of things for ball pythons and a reputable place to get morphs from
That will all really depend on you, honestly. I work the 12 - 12 with your schedule as with the misting. Usually I turn on all lights at 730 a and off at 730p. Mister goes off twice a day for 40 seconds. As far as a reputable place I would ask on Ball Python Enthusiasts on Facebook.
thanks dude
I am getting mine from VMS Herp and she is gonna be $30 for a normal morph.
Why did neither of you talk about putting a timer on the light? Makes way more sense ...
Have a couple of questions. One: Can I feed my ball python a dead rat in an bioactive tank even though the Springtails will try to feast on the dead rat, or should I feed my BP in a separate container? Question two: Can you do a video of a bioactive blood python setup? I know Bloods like their humidity around 75-80 percent, so I wouldn't be sure wich Terra Substrate to get when I finally decide to get a blood.
Hi Chrishasaclue, I know that on numerous forums etc they say to never pull the BP from the enclosure to eat it. I have fed my corns, hog, kenyan etc all FT with no issues with my systems. As for the blood I can in the future. I will be doing a few different videos for your larger species as your approach is much different when it comes to larger reptiles. I would use the Firma for a Blood, but you would need a deep layer, at least 8" (which is what they like anyway from my experiences).
Yea... The Firma would probrably be a better option. Bloods like moisture, but would probrably get scale rott if they are constantly on wet bedding. As you know, bloods aren't as forgiving with mistakes and errors as something like a Ball or an Angolan python is.... thanks for the heads up.
Your welcome. One thing to keep in mind with the Firma. It will almost always stay dry on the top, but retain moisture in the middle and bottom layers while aerating properly. This is important when it comes to your sedentary snakes that do not move around much. : )
personally i always feed in a different enclosure. that way your snake knows when its time to eat and when its time to be handled.
Something like fimya and then hmya ya and ya
Can u use ivy?
Hey Davis. Sure! Ivy is a great, resilient plant.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter ok great thanks
If you could work on the sound that would be great
Hi MrEarl, thank you for the honest feedback. this is a very old video. I have been working on better quality videos. It's all a learning process.
32:36 lol saw that
Hi mate
Ok .. is that an autographed Bee Gee's picture up there?
Negative, The Doors from 1968 - Morrison signed it himself.
I swear it looks like the Bee Gee's, LOL.
Get that camera up there so I can see the inside of the cage. Or get a freaking tripod.
Woah! Don't mention misting to this guy! Him and his wife used the blow their lid at anyone who mentioned it to aid humidity as it would pretty much kill your snake. Safe to say I quit the Facebook group they was power hungry on nice to see someone with more knowledge than him making him look like nervous school boy 😂
Also its proven FACT ball pythons do not just stay underground all the time during the daylight hours they have been found up trees just as many times they have been found on the ground or under the ground.
Unfortunately that regression happened after this video and I am now well aware of how they can communicate and speak to members of our community : (
I'm sorry. He said cactusus. Lol love ya dude but lol
Get rid of all the stuff in front of the tank. It is hindering me from seeing what you are doing.
you know you need to reply to someone that wants to buy your product . I just asked some simple questions about your product if you can not take the time to answer the post i will not buy you product
Then maybe you should email me instead of relying on social media to get the answers. I get 100+ comments daily.
It's like the dude has no idea how heat works.
Heat comes from the sun.
