I watched Bob Luce and wrestling every Sunday in the mid 70's. It was great seeing Dick the Bruiser, Crusher, Valiant, Moose Cholak, Heenan, Pepper Gomez, and all the wrestlers and promos. For a short time he had wrestlers in the studio perform "The Hold of The Week." Two wrestlers would get together and demonstrate how to do a particular wrestling hold on a person. They stopped this after a fairly short period of time. Kids were doing the newly learned holds on their friends and kids were getting hurt despite each segment starting out with a message to kids to be careful and not hurt their friends, but that didn't work. Who would have thought??
Back in the day when you saw the ring break, you were like "holy shit, this is so intense, it broke the ring." Now you see it and you just think "they gimmicked the ring to break."
I grew up in Chicago in the 60's and 70's. Sundays were Must See TV. I argued with my mom every Sunday since Church was at 10:30. I went a good 6 weeks in a row claiming to have the flu in the middle of summer to get out of going. lol
One of the highlights of my life was interviewing Bob Luce on my radio show. He found out from a caller that Buddy Rogers was dead. He just couldn't believe it and was in shock. Off the air, he told me that he liked Scott Steiner. He came across as a good business man. I'm sure he would have been proud about it. He was kinda leery of doing the interview because he never heard of me. He made me send him my resume to see if I was legit and up to his standards. He really wanted a tape of the show and was excited when I said that I'd send him a copy. Every day, for about five years, I was so grateful that I interviewed an idol from my childhood. He also admired Vince McMahon Senior and was a little bit disappointed that Junior never asked him to work with him. I wish that I had asked him what it was like doing business with The Shiek. Still very grateful that I interviewed him.
Actually, Bob Luce's studio shows were broadcast on WSNS-TV Ch. 44. WSNS was a new Chicago UHF station in mid-1970 that, at first, had no programming, merely an electronic news ticker. I grew up in Chicago's NW side, and WSNS' signal was weak and snowy. Anyway, Luce had his show called "Chicago Wrestling" on Sundays at noon. For a time, Bob Luce's program was live with co-host Johnny Kace. He'd have viewers call in with questions (such as "What's Crusher's real name?" "Uh, Reggie Lisowski.") At this point, Bruiser used Sam Menacker, (who'd replaced Chuck Marlowe as announcer and interview host) and the matches were more competitive star vs. star bouts, along with the more traditional "squashes.". Meanwhile, WCIU-TV Ch. 26 played the Gagne tapes 5 p.m. Saturdays and also Bruiiser's shows -- one telecast at 8 p.m. Wednesdays (sponsored by Candor Electric, a Commonwealth Edison contractor, which is STILL in business with the same phone number as in 1970) and another time slot at 11 a.m. Sundays prior to the San Francisco Roller Derby TVs.
That was awesome, yeah, Taz locking in the choke and Bam Bam just falling backward to break i but they went through the ring (then later, through the entrance ramp).
@MemphoWrasslin1 it's still the first I saw someone go through the ring, I know Jim is talking about people going through it for a shot but that's beside my original point...
The classiest Ben's Auto Sales commercial I've ever seen from Chicago was when they Dick the Bruiser did Ben's auto sales commercial says " tell him that Bruiser sent you then maybe I'll get paid" he mumbled something he walked out of the set🛎😳
To this day, I can't believe that Roberto Duran, or his people, never took notice. Knowing Duran, Ronnie using his name would have pissed him off something fierce.
Compared to today, Wrestling in 2005 was pretty good 😂 If i'm correct Raw had Evolution, Smackdown had Benoit, Eddie, Angle, Lesnar etc and Impact had the Main Event Mafia vs Frontline Story.
I worked ring crew for a local promotion in the early 2000s. The promoter had cur the ring down to better fit the main place he was running at the time. The problem was the spring in the middle was still the size for when it was taller, which meant it too four of us to push it down enough to get the bolt through. On one night the bolt broke on a bump and the middle bar when shooting up. Luckily the boards and canvas held it down enough that no one was hurt, but it was nuts. Another time a board snapped between near the middle of the ring. I don't remember what anyone did for the rest of the match, but it was an easy enough fix as we took an intermission and moved things around so the hole was in the corner and the guys worked around it. Side not, that ring was cast iron and heavy as fuck! It was nice when the next guy we worked with had a steel ring. More parts, but it was a breeze to put together and take down.
I'd just like to add that Randy Poffo never played minor league baseball for the White Sox organization. He was signed and played two years for the Cardinals before being released and catching on in the Reds system and playing one final year.
My brother (a pretty big dude) trained for pro wrestling back in '97. The first bump he ever took, he broke a couple of boards and sunk into the middle of the ring. It was great - I still have it on a VHS tape somewhere. His gimmick for awhile after that was "The Ringbuster". LOL!
I love these stories. I wish they would just talk about the past/old school wrestling, Vince McMahon stories, Jim and Brian’s commentary on real life stuff and politics. I hate when they talk about AEW, I’m just not a fan of modern wrestling and hate hearing about it.
I once saw the ring break on live Memphis wrestling on a Saturday morning. It may have been around 1978. It was the final match, tag team, not any big names at the time. They just kept going like nothing happened, except they were laughing and snickering.
Do people actually take aew seriously IT'S SO BAD it's funny. It's not wrestling Kenny omega n the good brothers. Watching omega billed as a great struggling to fall take a bump, running then stopping short to take a move so it looks REALLY fake. Not flowing awful PROMOS awful entrances and commentary. Also I ain't tall but know how to defend myself my point is you don't have to be jacked up on roids n tall to be able to look after yourself but why lie. Darby Allen is not 12stone 2, 170pounds omonga ain't 220.ITS SO EMBARRASSING ITS FUNNY. Tna Aew pure shit you watch it to laugh.
Don't forget, Bob also did plugs for "One Stop" groceries and Miller's Pub.
I met Bob Luce twice in
1974. He drove a White 1972 Cadillac Eldorado.
I fucking loved Bob Luce promos with Yukon Moose Cholack. Gold.
Bob Luce on Sunday's @ 11 was my shiznit.
I'm remember every thing that the letter writer describes!
I was lucky enough to attend one of those mid-70s international amphitheater matches in my youth .. Bob Luce was definitely a character 👍
Chicago native right here...if you ever visit I definitely recommend getting an Italian beef ...no need to thank me
Loved Bob Luce!❤

Old school wrestler's what? Oh, wait, you just aren't bright enough to know that you don't use apostrophes in plurals.

BEST WRESTLING EVER!!!!!!
I had to get my alter boy schedule changed to watch Bob Luce Wrestling.

First time I saw the ring break was Taz vs Bam Bam Bigelow on the ECW PPV Living Dangerously 1998...
That was awesome, yeah, Taz locking in the choke and Bam Bam just falling backward to break i but they went through the ring (then later, through the entrance ramp).
Wasn't that worked?
Yea. They had it happen earlier in the show to make it look it like an accident with it taped off during the rest of the show.
@MemphoWrasslin1 it's still the first I saw someone go through the ring, I know Jim is talking about people going through it for a shot but that's beside my original point...
@Charming Billy That wasn't a fork, that was a U turn.

"Actually one time. They (WWE) send us ropes and a guy that showed us how to tie them" - Jim Cornette
Those Moo & Oink commercials were fuckin hilarious!!! Look them up.
My Ring broke in Johnsburg Illinois! The Fabulous Tim Kelly owned the ring and forgot to double the 2x10s!
The Fabulous Kelly Brothers vs The Pit Bulls! The Main Event was going to be The Clawmaster Baron Von Raschke vs The Golden Boy Paul Christy!
What's with all of the exclamation points?
Was it your ring or Tim Kelly?
You know who broke a lot of wrestling rings? Ronnie Garvin, his hands were made of stone.
To this day, I can't believe that Roberto Duran, or his people, never took notice. Knowing Duran, Ronnie using his name would have pissed him off something fierce.
In the 50s a ring broke at Argo High School in Summit Illinois. Bouncing Gardena was on the card!
Compared to today, Wrestling in 2005 was pretty good 😂
If i'm correct Raw had Evolution, Smackdown had Benoit, Eddie, Angle, Lesnar etc and Impact had the Main Event Mafia vs Frontline Story.
Main Event Mafia wasn't until 2008.

Interesting butt you're spelling sux rally bud.
@@michaelkaminski8339 Get a life. This isn't English class
Never seen a ring with a spring in the middle, pretty sure Jim commented on that too in terms of being rarely seen if ever
Chmielinski? That translates to Hops (like hops used for beer) so Jim Hops.
najlepszy sposób na trudności z polską wymową :D
Our ring broke as I said in Johnsburg Illinois! The Golden Boy Paul Christy and Baron Von Raschke were the main event!

Good timing i just watched austins broken skulls with big show. And they showed where him and brock broke the ring in 05
It wasn't 05

I remember once on Raw, the top rope broke off at the turnbuckle. Bradshaw just picked it up and started clubbing people in the head with it.

Waaaaa
Lol it definitely seems rope around two mattresses would've been better than most of those rings in those days
Backlund used to do fitness tests on TV
“In conclusion...!”
Wow lol I bet he threw that in just to help the odds of Corny using his email. It was kind of funny
My dad grew up going to Chicago wrestling at the Marigold arena and told me stories of seeing some of these guys back in the day.
Master Deer 474 🦌🦌👍

Everybody in these comments better calm. DOWN!!!
Juicy
My dad worked for Bruiser in 63/64. I remember all of those. Never liked Bob Luce.

Jim in aew is a dream fever. But imagine the possibility
Well Jim the Biden campaign isn’t starting off so hot now is it?
@@kryceksangel Yes they are. People want “change” so they vote in a guy that spent 40 years in office incarcerating black people. Seems legit
