Hey, I just wanted to let you know I finally got around to my second transmission with these W 56s. I did the Toyota truck earlier now I’m doing the 4 Runner that I was talking to you about. Came apart really easy. This is a great video for people who are doing us for the first time or for those who did it 20 years ago. Outstanding video well organized can’t give you enough kudos. Thanks for taking your time to do this and if anybody out there is doing a W 56 transmission, to me, this is by far the best video on the market. Once again, thanks for your time and RM garage and keep the vids coming. I watch many of them. Thanks again, RM
I will never complain about someone else's innovative way to disassemble something. Yes, you are right there are proper tools for everything, but I too don't do it enough to afford all the special tools, when some level of out of the box thinking can get you there. I think you made all of us think we too now, can rebuild transmissions🤣. While this doesn't look easy OR simple, but it looks simple enough if you keep all your parts organized correctly.
@@MyCarsandProjects appreciate it! Had a guy comment once complaining about the use of a claw hammer. Wait til he learns that everything is a hammer technically. 😂
@@RM_Garage So true, was doing a project recently and I said to my kid, we'll have to hammer that and she said where's the hammer and I said give me those pliers, they'll work just fine😂
i have an R150F in an old gen1 Tacoma... it made it to 341k miles on the original clutch (throwout bearing started the chirping at last) so i finally had the clutch parts replaced. Upon disassembly found that the pilot bearing had roached a nice groove on the input shaft and the input shaft bearing was a bit on the wobbly side. [27-Jan-2o24]
Hi again, my 1985 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed's transmission makes noise in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears while on the street/road from a stop, it does not make noise in the 4th or 5th or even coasting... any ideas to what it may be? I also replaced the trans gear oil the other day with Redline full synthetic 70w90...... please advise, thanks!
Hey there! Give it some time, YT takes a while to process bigger videos like this one. CC/subtitles should be available by the end of the day, as well as 4K.
The pads on the 1-2 shift fork should be examined to make sure there is still plenty of meat on them. The 1-2 fork gets used more than the rest of them and if the pads get too thin you will get the dreaded first gear kick out and a new shift collar won't fix it.
Need to know what your doing like an advanced lego set of cogs for a engineer minded person. I'm a car mechanic could strip rebuild any engine from scratch.. But G boxes never got the training or experience but these videos sir Wil help loads. Bearings look like car wheel bearings.. And loads of cogs.. Circlips andoads of 3 prong bearing pullers.. Master Gbox builder no doubt
I was originally going with Cobra but they're out of stock. eBay has quite a few sellers who have Nachi bearings with synchros for $200. Yeah I plan to replace the synchros.
@@RM_Garage I am about to rebuild my W56 as well. I wanted to use Cobra but also noticed they were out of stock. I found these guys out of Redding, CA. They use Nachi and NSK bearings. $ 159 dollars. transpartswarehouse.com/bk162ws-w55-w56-w58-toyota-transmission-rebuild-kit-5-speed-1978-1991.html
Next episode, rebuilding it:

Just picked up an 88 4Runner for a absolute steal, really excited to work on it and watching these videos makes me feel lazy lol
Sweet!! They’re fun to work on
Good video bro keep it up everyone can say whatever but they aren’t the ones taking apart the trans for the first time and filming it for UA-cam.
Thanks! Yeah totally not worried about it and to be fair it went really well! No issues tearing this thing apart.
Very interesting and thank you for your time Jahbless
Good tip on the impact driver and the gear puller.
👍 thanks for watching

The dreaded first gear kick out. Thanks for the tip. I seem to be having that problem in my four-speed.
Pls next, Assembly this gear box

Where are you buying the rebuild kit from? Are you replacing the syncros as well?

We’re you ever able to get your hands on a marlin crawler kit?
No, they’re out of stock still :/
Just following up, the rebuild video is posted! I used a kit from transpartswarehouse which was all OEM spec NSK/Nachi/Koyo.
18:33 like hammering a new head onto an axe…hammer the bottom of the handle and it will draw it towards the hammering.
where did you buy your rebuild kit from ? thanks
It’s in the description of the rebuild video. (The next video after this)

Inertia is what drove off the gear.
👍👍👍👍👍❤
Thanks a lot - it´s very helpfully.

Mine works perfectly it just leaks in the middle on both sides 😂
Haha nice! Don’t they all? 😂
Was considering doing this job…yeah no, way too many pieces and moving parts.
There is a lot of room for error, that's for sure.
