- In this interview we visit Swedish Metal Drummer Hannes van Dahl of SABATON in the studio.
Following his philosophy: “It don´t mean a thing if it ain´t got that swing” Hannes has worked hard for a career that has lead him to being the drummer for SABATON one of Sweden´s most successful metal bands and international music export.
”I´ve always liked to play, no matter what style or genre. If I can just play then I am happy. That is still the same way” says Hannes who started of playing in Evergray and Downthrust before landing the gig with Sabaton in 2013.

Underrated drummer for sure!! Hannes is really talented and has his own speciel playing style, but it's a shame that no one really talks about him :// One of my favorite drummers, can easily put him on my top 10 favorites!!🤘

I’m big into sound and tonality and this guys kits compliment each other. All the toms and snares go together harmonically and cymbals as well. Very good drummer. Very very good quality sounding drummer.

No shit. It's the easiest drum beat to guess of all Sabaton songs besides Carolus Rex and Lion From the North. Rise of Evil is pretty easy to guess as well.

At the beginning his voice was too soft so I turned the volume up...instant regret.

He uses the TAMA speed cobra tough...
not anymore, now he uses the yamaha FP9C. However, at home and the us tour a few weeks ago he's using speed cobra again

Johannes Wichert keep in mind he’s a left handed drummer
roll on snare into two kicks then hit on mid then more rolling. Then on that sixlet part its high, floor, high, kick, high, floor, high, kick. It's definitely a harder fill but a cool one. And with the point of him being a lefty you can pretty much replicate it by just switching the sticking.

I play drums and bass. Guitar is too complicated although I know a few riffs like: Smoke on the Water: Deep Purple, Walk: Pantera, Black Heart: Stone Temple Pilots, Living After Midnight: Judas Priest etc. I mentioned the artists as well because there are idiots out there who doesn't know what Judas Priest or STP or Pantera is.
Bass is that kind of instrument that i easy to learn but hard to master. My biggest inspiration was Steve Harris. Then I saw Pär Sundstöms bass and I thought: "Damn, I need that one." And I bought the same brand and model as Pärs bass. It was also my first bass. I play with 4 strings as well cuz it's easier to keep track of them that way and i've always played 4 string and I feel like it's enough.
