Keep the name! I’m an expat too in México! I was born in Indonesia and lived in US most of my adult life. I moved to Morelia about 9 months ago and we all called ourselves as expats! Screw them who gave you such an issue!

According to what I read the correct definition of an expat is someone who takes the citizenship of the country that they move to hence EX-patriate. In other words they relinquished their citizenship of the country they were born to take a new citizenship. I think that you should look to this deeper definition NOT the light definition version. Also, the fact that you defend the argument for using the word expats by using youtubers, it's a bit weak as most UA-camrs are wrong using the terms that they don't even understand. So in the strict definition you haven't taken the Mexican citizenship so you are still a US citizen not an expat. It takes courage to recognize that some things are wrong.
The word "expat" clues in viewers who might want to learn something about moving to Mex. and/or living there, etc. It certainly did for me. These politically correct SJWs are nuts. BTW: did you know that recently, here in the US media, learning math is a racist thing? That's how far these nuts will go.
@@fourthdeconstruction None of the dictionary definitions I've read say anything about citizenship. When you leave your native country you become expatriated from it. When you arrive in a country not of your origin, you are an immigrant to it. Same coin different sides, and doesn't matter where your citizenship lies - just where you are residing.

As a woman of color, I’m a little tired of people speaking for me and telling everyone how I should feel based on my color and their wokeness…when all I really want to do is just “Be”. Keep the name. I'm with you. I'm an AA woman and I do not walk in lockstep with folks with an agenda that they expect me to embrace just because I share a race with them. Most of these "woke" folks are not "woke". I am an original woman of color, who actually has brown skin. One of my friends, who has a darker skin tone, refer to me as an immigrant. It was insulting and I let her know - that “Expat” is the correct term. I see nothing wrong with the term. Meanwhile, when POC speak, they are not speaking for you. You are not what we consider to be a POC…

But once I move to Mexico, I’ll be darker than most! I’m usually mistaken for Hispanic when I visit. I can’t wait!

Just checked with 6 friends from 4 different countries, all living here in the US. None of them have ever thought that expat was racist, and many have used it to describe themselves at one time or another. Most laughed it off and said "well, you can't please everyone ". Keep the name.
As US citizens we definitely have privilege as travelers. For example, our passport gets us easy entry into 184/195 countries. This has given us a say in how we define ourselves. As US citizens, we do not refer to people who move to our country as expats. Instead, we refer to them as aliens, foreigners and immigrants. I think that is why some viewers feel offended by your use of the more flattering term of expat. Personally, I do not find the term racist but more about class due to our status as a wealthy nation. I say keep the name. Plus, given you have taken the time to learn Spanish, shows a lot of respect for the Mexican people in that you do not expect them to speak to you in English.
Excellent point. The media in the US never refer to people who have come to the US as expats but rather as immigrants, - believe the same is true of Brits. So I don't think it's so much racist as a bit elitist - I'm not an immigrant, I'm an expat! I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take a look at oneself and wonder why one name is preferred over another - maybe use each one from time to time. As far as the name of the channel - keep it. It speaks well of you that you were willing to look at the issue respectfully and thoroughly. By the way, I'm born and raised in the USA and now living happily in Mexico as an expat who is actually an immigrant and a permanent resident!
"Expats" is a neutral term around the world. It's as romantic as Hemmingway or Casablanca, and as descriptive for the least as for the greatest, as a privilege of adoption, refuge, respite or adventure.

I'm from the Caribbean and have worked in a foreign country (not the US) for most of my career. I am a work permit holder thus am a temporary resident in a foreign country with no desire to remain permanently and no pathway to do so, even if I wanted to. I'm viewed as an expat in this country as are the white work permit holders in this country. I'm Black. In a few years I intend to migrate to Mexico at which time I will view myself as a migrant to that country as I intend to live there permanently. I do not believe there is anything innately racist about the words "immigrant" or "expatriate/expat". However as observers of US politics and as a regular visitor to the US I always observe with interest the pejorative way in which some Americans refer to immigration and some immigrants, especially when it involves various peoples of colour. However, this is not unique to the US, though it takes on a different complexion in the UK and western European countries , where the target of the pejorative undertones when referring to some populations within these countries, includes both people of colour as well as economic migrants from Eastern Europe - cue Brexit, "boat people" etc. So there are real sensitivities around how the word immigrant is used within those countries. It doesn't mean that all use of these words is problematic and offensive; and even when the undertones are present in their use, it also doesn't mean that the words themselves are illigitimately used. Language is used to communicate both facts and feelings and it is human to acknowledge both. That said, you've built your brand around your concept of what you represent to this community. I think it is unreasonable for anyone to expect you to dispose of it to assuage someone's misplaced notion of justice. Your doing so could potentially adversely affect the SEO of your blog and channel and would have absolutely no impact on how the language of immigration is misused by thought and political leaders in some countries to diminish and pigeon-hole some immigrants. Sorry for the long missive.
Ignore the ignorance. The word expat is how you are found by other expats who seek out your content. There are people out there looking to get offended, no matter how innocently a term is used.

When I lived in Mexico, my Mexican friends referred to those living there from other countries as ex-pats. Major news organizations refer to ex-pats. Large websites for those wanting to live in another country often use ex-pat in the name. Keep it in your vlog and blog name.
I’ve wondered about and discussed this topic several times. My conclusion is about as conclusive as yours…i.e., whatever one wants to think I guess? I vote you just leave your recognized title intact. After all, those who were offended are already gone and won’t likely return for the rebranding.
There is a difference between expat (a noun or adjective) and immigrant (a noun only). It is that expat can be used as a modifier to the noun. IE, Qroo Paul is an expat American who immigrated in 2015. Keep the name the same.
I think Expat is a good term, we originally found your channel as I'm helping my husband trying to envision our life in MX after he retires, I don't think he'll see himself working and earning on MXP so we'll probably go for a little business venture targeted for other expats, that's where I think the difference in his mind the term is. Excuse me, but a business in MX requires a bank account, therefore claimed income, therefore MX taxes. Unless you are accusing these people of working “under the table” which is preposterous since you don’t even know them, then stop the accusations.
@@BryanB0308 what's this about? I think there's a misunderstanding. I am Mexican who used to have my income in MXP. Who's accusing who? My husband is American who knows his job in Mx would earn him just a fraction of his current US rare. Therefore why we would like to operate our own business, oriented to expats, charging in foreign currency. And yes of course any business operating in Mx would have to report an income in a MX bank account, just the term expat makes more sense when trying to connect with other expats as there's a commonality. No finger pointing or accusations here.

Basically when poor people come to your country (whatever country that is) they are immigrants. When rich people come to your country (again whatever country that is) they are expats. By making this video I think all you're doing is potentially causing divisions within your viewrs. I think the smartest thing to do is take this video down and ignore the people who complain about the particular noun you use.

I don't think you should change the name just because "some" people on UA-cam think is racist or inappropriate. My wife is a naturalized Mexican citizen and I am from the USA. I have been coming to Mexican every Christmas for 18 years to spend time with my wife's family and I'm currently a temporary resident of Mexico. I have been watching your channel and others for a while now and didn't know what the word expat meant until watching some of these videos. I consider myself an expat because I now spend more time in Mexico than in the USA. there's danger to caving in to easily to pressure to be politically correct, so I think this video does a good job of being humble, respectful & open, yet strong. Am wondering if the difference between expat and immigrant could be related to citizenship rights. As a Canadian living in Mexico long term, I consider myself an expat and am grateful Mexico allows this arrangement. I have no interest in obtaining citizenship rights like the right to vote. (I do not believe a Mexican could live in Canada the same way.) If I did became a citizen of Mexico with voting rights, I would then consider myself to an immigrant, a Mexican.
I think this is a very good explanation. When I hear someone described as an immigrant, I tend to think of this person leaving their country of origin in order to not just establish permanent residency elsewhere, but to become a citizen of that country as well.
@@toonietom why not just be a citizen? Why dwell on the past, “ex”pat? If I’m sober I wouldn’t call myself an ex-drunk for the rest of my life. Having said that, I would rather be considered an expat than an immigrant. As I’ve stated, I think the latter word has been politicized sadly.

When I first came to Mexico I attended a party of expats in the apartment building I lived in. We were all relatively new to the country and were sharing some of our experiences and reasons for coming to Mexico. After a while the conversations kind of died down and I said to all "Well, I guess we are all expatriates." An uncomfortable silence ensued until someone else laughed out loud and said "yeah, I guess we are." Everyone agreed and we went on about our evening entertainment. It was from that moment, six and a half years ago, I've been proud to be an expat living in Mexico.

I do enjoy your show, lots of good effort in each topic. Merriam-Webster discusses the full term, "expatriate". I always felt the term had connotations that the "expat" made a conscious choice to live outside his country and often returns to the home country with no great acrimony. Whereas an immigrant often leaves his home because of economic extremity or political reasons, persecution, life threatening circumstances and they usually don't regularly return. Most of the expats I knew felt that one day, when they became seriously aged, that they would return to their home country. My 2 cents.

I have always felt an expat is world traveler and immigrant is someone who moves to find work, and assimilates into the culture. An expat is more of a visitor who brings money into the country.. that is the stigma in a nutshell. Expat is a perfect name, because you are focusing for, and helping other Expats live in Mexico with your helpful information. Expats can be come residents, citizens, a part time residence, or an immigrant. Are you still an expat or are you retired and enjoying live in Mexico, or are working and circulating money in the Mexican economy? That doesn’t matter. The subjects you talk about are geared towards Expats and how to live a good life in Mexico. If you change your subject matter than you might have to change your name.. keep up the good work.

Please don’t change it. We are expats from the southern tip of Africa now resident in the US. It is a recognised term that helps me search relevant information. Love your channel. The whole world exists because of “expats” - British, French, Spanish etc. in the Americas and everywhere else
East Indians ( brown people 😀) living in the Arabian Gulf call themselves Expats. It is the same everywhere..it has no racist connotations whatsoever. We immigrated to Canada years ago from India and we call ourselves First Generation Immigrants. That is it!! People have all sorts of ideas.. real or imagined..it is alright!! 😀
For years I have dreamed and planned to move to Mexico when I retired. I have seen many of the youtube channels that focus on retiring in Mexico. I consider my politics center left. I have never heard of anyone having an issue with expats until I saw this. I think the first time I became aware of it is the Jimmy Buffett song about "expatriated American hoping to find some fun." The videos I have seen you put out appears to be trying to help people get used to the changes in Mexico. That is enough. In 2018 El Financiero had an article titled. "Mexico en el Top 10 de paises que los expatriados prefieren para vivir" Where I live very few people to none from USA or Canada. So I wouldnt have heard about it from other expats. Plus my Mexican spouse says its an OK term. .She has been know to correct me. If you look long enough you might find a definition about duration. Immigrants more permanent but expatriates for shorter less permanent time. That might be the difference. Good luck. I like Mexico a lot. Enjoying living here in Mexico City.
My Kids live in the US. My daughter is studying to be a nurse. I suspect she will do OK in the US. Im not sure what make América great again means I worked in call centers. I saved some money. Sold my house came here. Its easier to make ends meet.
I think that the difference is intent. An immigrant travels from their home country to another country in order to permanently live in their adopted country. Immigrants generally strive to adopt the language and cultural norms of their adopted country. An expat travels from their home country to another country in order to live in that country but don’t intend to live there permanently. They also don’t feel the need to learn the language and adopt the culture of the country they’re living in.
So glad you did this video! And that you took it seriously and didn't just try to defend your position. I recently heard about the language I use in my videos and how it would be better to use terms that locals use. For instance, Los Cabos instead of Cabo. Or Gulf of California instead of Sea of Cortez. Tiny little changes, but good suggestions. BTW, I like the term expat and I think it's most important to use the words that your audience uses!
Expat is someone who still has strong financial and political ties to their country (ex. Own property, pay taxes, vote) and travels back and forth on a routine basis to their own country but lives in a foreign country…they don’t necessarily want to be naturalized or assimilated into the foreign country they live in…an immigrant mostly is someone who has cut all ties to their country and wants a fresh new start, their aim is to become naturalized and assimilated in their new country…they may travel back once in a while but have abandoned the notion of ever returning to live in their own country again

My parents are immigrants from Norway to the US. They stayed to become citizens. Expats, by definition, don't intend to change nationality. Foreign residents of any country, are guests of that country. This term is not racists, it is accurate. Don't give in to the fringe people attempting to redefine things to their own twisted perception.

As a POC who is looking to expatriate, I don't see an issue with the word "expat" itself, but can understand the socioeconomic and cultural differences in using "expat" vs "immigrant". I'm follow words carefully and am also an African American looking to expatriate. I have never heard this as an issue. The only difference I can think would be if you are living in another country voluntarily or through exigent circumstances such as economic distress or natural disaster. I don't think you need to change the name at all. I am looking forward to being an expat in Mexico.

Hey Q, I am an American of Mexican descent born here in the US. I have a lot of family in Mexico that I visit frequently. When I am there my relatives call me a pocho, a gringo, and an extranjero. I'm cool with that. Although I am "an American", of Mexican heritage, I am as as Mexican as the man on the moon. Culture is culture it's varied and I understand how people can perceive "otherness". You own that station name it what you like. I'm not offended by it at all. I like that you are giving Mexico Props, there is so much disinformation about Mexico being unsafe. Keep up the positivity!

To me it seems that an immigrant intends to eventually identify with the nationality of the new country. I don't currently intend to be a Mexican - only to be an American living in Mexico. If I was young and moved here and integrated into mexican society, I would consider myself an immigrant. Western people today act like they win a prize for finding and calling out racism, which they think any difference proves.

As a permanent resident in Mexico, I refer to myself as an immigrant. To me, “expat” sounds like I am no longer patriotic to the United States, and that’s not true at all. I consider myself as the same as any foreigner who has chosen to move to the United States, and the word that is most often used for them is “immigrant”. Keep your name! It’s fine! Absolutely leave your name the same! I’m so supersized anyone challenged the meaning of “expat”. The definitions you read is what an expat is, and what it’s always been. #1, an immigrant is someone moving to another country in order to become a citizen of that country therefore, giving up their original countries citizenship. An expat is someone moving to another country to live there while, keeping their original countries citizenship. Please, keep on doing what you do and don't change a thing.

According to what I read the correct definition of an expat is someone who takes the citizenship of the country that they move to hence EX-patriate. In other words they relinquished their citizenship of the country they were born to take a new citizenship. I think that you should look to this deeper definition NOT the light definition version. Also, the fact that you defend the argument for using the word expats by using youtubers, it's a bit weak as most UA-camrs are wrong using the terms that they don't even understand. So in the strict definition you haven't taken the Mexican citizenship so you are still a US citizen not an expat. It takes courage to recognize that some things are wrong.
The word "expat" clues in viewers who might want to learn something about moving to Mex. and/or living there, etc. It certainly did for me. These politically correct SJWs are nuts. BTW: did you know that recently, here in the US media, learning math is a racist thing? That's how far these nuts will go.

When you arrive in a country not of your origin, you are an immigrant to it. Same coin different sides, and doesn't matter where your citizenship lies - just where you are residing.

I am an original woman of color, who actually has brown skin. One of my friends, who has a darker skin tone, refer to me as an immigrant. It was insulting and I let her know - that “Expat” is the correct term. I see nothing wrong with the term. Meanwhile, when POC speak, they are not speaking for you. Just checked with 6 friends from 4 different countries, all living here in the US. None of them have ever thought that expat was racist, and many have used it to describe themselves at one time or another. Most laughed it off and said "well, you can't please everyone ". Keep the name.

As US citizens we definitely have privilege as travelers. For example, our passport gets us easy entry into 184/195 countries. This has given us a say in how we define ourselves. As US citizens, we do not refer to people who move to our country as expats. Instead, we refer to them as aliens, foreigners and immigrants. I think that is why some viewers feel offended by your use of the more flattering term of expat. Personally, I do not find the term racist but more about class due to our status as a wealthy nation. I say keep the name. Plus, given you have taken the time to learn Spanish, shows a lot of respect for the Mexican people in that you do not expect them to speak to you in English.
Excellent point. The media in the US never refer to people who have come to the US as expats but rather as immigrants, - believe the same is true of Brits. So I don't think it's so much racist as a bit elitist - I'm not an immigrant, I'm an expat! I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take a look at oneself and wonder why one name is preferred over another - maybe use each one from time to time. As far as the name of the channel - keep it. It speaks well of you that you were willing to look at the issue respectfully and thoroughly. "Expats" is a neutral term around the world. It's as romantic as Hemmingway or Casablanca, and as descriptive for the least as for the greatest, as a privilege of adoption, refuge, respite or adventure.

expat = identification with my country (patria=homeland) I came from incl cultural roots (just not living there anymore but maybe going back)

I'm from the Caribbean and have worked in a foreign country (not the US) for most of my career. I am a work permit holder thus am a temporary resident in a foreign country with no desire to remain permanently and no pathway to do so, even if I wanted to. I'm viewed as an expat in this country as are the white work permit holders in this country. I'm Black. In a few years I intend to migrate to Mexico at which time I will view myself as a migrant to that country as I intend to live there permanently. I do not believe there is anything innately racist about the words "immigrant" or "expatriate/expat". However as observers of US politics and as a regular visitor to the US I always observe with interest the pejorative way in which some Americans refer to immigration and some immigrants, especially when it involves various peoples of colour. However, this is not unique to the US, though it takes on a different complexion in the UK and western European countries , where the target of the pejorative undertones when referring to some populations within these countries, includes both people of colour as well as economic migrants from Eastern Europe - cue Brexit, "boat people" etc. So there are real sensitivities around how the word immigrant is used within those countries. It doesn't mean that all use of these words is problematic and offensive; and even when the undertones are present in their use, it also doesn't mean that the words themselves are illigitimately used. Language is used to communicate both facts and feelings and it is human to acknowledge both. That said, you've built your brand around your concept of what you represent to this community. I think it is unreasonable for anyone to expect you to dispose of it to assuage someone's misplaced notion of justice. Your doing so could potentially adversely affect the SEO of your blog and channel and would have absolutely no impact on how the language of immigration is misused by thought and political leaders in some countries to diminish and pigeon-hole some immigrants. Sorry for the long missive.
Ignore the ignorance. The word expat is how you are found by other expats who seek out your content. There are people out there looking to get offended, no matter how innocently a term is used.

When I lived in Mexico, my Mexican friends referred to those living there from other countries as ex-pats. Major news organizations refer to ex-pats. Large websites for those wanting to live in another country often use ex-pat in the name. Keep it in your vlog and blog name.

I’ve wondered about and discussed this topic several times. My conclusion is about as conclusive as yours…i.e., whatever one wants to think I guess? I vote you just leave your recognized title intact. After all, those who were offended are already gone and won’t likely return for the rebranding.
There is a difference between expat (a noun or adjective) and immigrant (a noun only). It is that expat can be used as a modifier to the noun. IE, Qroo Paul is an expat American who immigrated in 2015. Keep the name the same.

I think Expat is a good term, we originally found your channel as I'm helping my husband trying to envision our life in MX after he retires, I don't think he'll see himself working and earning on MXP so we'll probably go for a little business venture targeted for other expats, that's where I think the difference in his mind the term is.

Therefore why we would like to operate our own business, oriented to expats, charging in foreign currency. And yes of course any business operating in Mx would have to report an income in a MX bank account, just the term expat makes more sense when trying to connect with other expats as there's a commonality.

I think by even making this video you're shaking a hornets nest needlessly. Basically when poor people come to your country (whatever country that is) they are immigrants. When rich people come to your country (again whatever country that is) they are expats. By making this video I think all you're doing is potentially causing divisions within your viewrs. I have been coming to Mexican every Christmas for 18 years to spend time with my wife's family and I'm currently a temporary resident of Mexico. I have been watching your channel and others for a while now and didn't know what the word expat meant until watching some of these videos. I consider myself an expat because I now spend more time in Mexico than in the USA. Many times I’ve heard Americans living abroad as being termed as ex-pats on a major news networks.

Am wondering if the difference between expat and immigrant could be related to citizenship rights. As a Canadian living in Mexico long term, I consider myself an expat and am grateful Mexico allows this arrangement. I have no interest in obtaining citizenship rights like the right to vote. (I do not believe a Mexican could live in Canada the same way.) If I did became a citizen of Mexico with voting rights, I would then consider myself to an immigrant, a Mexican.
I think this is a very good explanation. When I hear someone described as an immigrant, I tend to think of this person leaving their country of origin in order to not just establish permanent residency elsewhere, but to become a citizen of that country as well.
If you choose to become a citizen of Mexico, you are no longer an immigrant, you are Mexican, full stop.

When I first came to Mexico I attended a party of expats in the apartment building I lived in. We were all relatively new to the country and were sharing some of our experiences and reasons for coming to Mexico. After a while the conversations kind of died down and I said to all "Well, I guess we are all expatriates." An uncomfortable silence ensued until someone else laughed out loud and said "yeah, I guess we are." Everyone agreed and we went on about our evening entertainment. It was from that moment, six and a half years ago, I've been proud to be an expat living in Mexico.

I do enjoy your show, lots of good effort in each topic. Merriam-Webster discusses the full term, "expatriate". I always felt the term had connotations that the "expat" made a conscious choice to live outside his country and often returns to the home country with no great acrimony. Whereas an immigrant often leaves his home because of economic extremity or political reasons, persecution, life threatening circumstances and they usually don't regularly return. Most of the expats I knew felt that one day, when they became seriously aged, that they would return to their home country. My 2 cents.

I have always felt an expat is world traveler and immigrant is someone who moves to find work, and assimilates into the culture. An expat is more of a visitor who brings money into the country.. that is the stigma in a nutshell.
Expat is a perfect name, because you are focusing for, and helping other Expats live in Mexico with your helpful information. Expats can be come residents, citizens, a part time residence, or an immigrant. Are you still an expat or are you retired and enjoying live in Mexico, or are working and circulating money in the Mexican economy? That doesn’t matter. The subjects you talk about are geared towards Expats and how to live a good life in Mexico. If you change your subject matter than you might have to change your name.. keep up the good work.

For years I have dreamed and planned to move to Mexico when I retired. I have seen many of the youtube channels that focus on retiring in Mexico. I consider my politics center left. I have never heard of anyone having an issue with expats until I saw this. I think the first time I became aware of it is the Jimmy Buffett song about "expatriated American hoping to find some fun." The videos I have seen you put out appears to be trying to help people get used to the changes in Mexico. That is enough.
In 2018 El Financiero had an article titled. "Mexico en el Top 10 de paises que los expatriados prefieren para vivir" Where I live very few people to none from USA or Canada. So I wouldnt have heard about it from other expats.
Plus my Mexican spouse says its an OK term. .She has been know to correct me. If you look long enough you might find a definition about duration. Immigrants more permanent but expatriates for shorter less permanent time. That might be the difference.

I think that the difference is intent. An immigrant travels from their home country to another country in order to permanently live in their adopted country. Immigrants generally strive to adopt the language and cultural norms of their adopted country.
An expat travels from their home country to another country in order to live in that country but don’t intend to live there permanently. They also don’t feel the need to learn the language and adopt the culture of the country they’re living in.
So glad you did this video! And that you took it seriously and didn't just try to defend your position. I recently heard about the language I use in my videos and how it would be better to use terms that locals use. For instance, Los Cabos instead of Cabo. Or Gulf of California instead of Sea of Cortez. Tiny little changes, but good suggestions.
BTW, I like the term expat and I think it's most important to use the words that your audience uses!
Expat is someone who still has strong financial and political ties to their country (ex. Own property, pay taxes, vote) and travels back and forth on a routine basis to their own country but lives in a foreign country…they don’t necessarily want to be naturalized or assimilated into the foreign country they live in…an immigrant mostly is someone who has cut all ties to their country and wants a fresh new start, their aim is to become naturalized and assimilated in their new country…they may travel back once in a while but have abandoned the notion of ever returning to live in their own country again

My parents are immigrants from Norway to the US. They stayed to become citizens. Expats, by definition, don't intend to change nationality. Foreign residents of any country, are guests of that country. This term is not racists, it is accurate. Don't give in to the fringe people attempting to redefine things to their own twisted perception.

As a POC who is looking to expatriate, I don't see an issue with the word "expat" itself, but can understand the socioeconomic and cultural differences in using "expat" vs "immigrant". With that said, I found your channel by searching for "expats in Mexico". Without it, I may never have found your amazing and insightful videos. Keep doing you Qroo!

I'm follow words carefully and am also an African American looking to expatriate. I have never heard this as an issue. The only difference I can think would be if you are living in another country voluntarily or through exigent circumstances such as economic distress or natural disaster. I don't think you need to change the name at all. I am looking forward to being an expat in Mexico.
Small-minded people doing what they do best: complaining and finding fault in someone else rather than doing something positive themselves. Personally, I don't believe I would have given this issue any of my energy, but you have gone beyond accommodating your complainers by acknowledging their small thoughts; leave it at that. Hey Q, I am an American of Mexican descent born here in the US. I have a lot of family in Mexico that I visit frequently. When I am there my relatives call me a pocho, a gringo, and an extranjero. I'm cool with that. Although I am "an American", of Mexican heritage, I am as as Mexican as the man on the moon. Culture is culture it's varied and I understand how people can perceive "otherness". You own that station name it what you like. I'm not offended by it at all. I like that you are giving Mexico Props, there is so much disinformation about Mexico being unsafe. Keep up the positivity!

Keep the name. It’s fine! In my company, we use the term to describe anyone we send to another country with the intent of it being temporary. Doesn’t matter which country to which country or what race the person is.

To me it seems that an immigrant intends to eventually identify with the nationality of the new country. I don't currently intend to be a Mexican - only to be an American living in Mexico. If I was young and moved here and integrated into mexican society, I would consider myself an immigrant. Western people today act like they win a prize for finding and calling out racism, which they think any difference proves.

Disculpa, pero no hay que ser ingenuos, el término "inmigrante" tiene una connotación despectiva, por eso los estadounidenses optan por "expatriado." Y no necesariamente lo hacen por complejo de superioridad, pero la realidad es que en su contexto cultural (EE.UU) se han formado con la idea de estar en un nivel diferente al resto (no europeo ni nortemaericano) y en muchas ocasiones lo traen inconscientemente. Es algo que difícilmente pueden ver, por eso una muestra de verdadera empatía es tratar de verlo con los ojos de los demás. Como bien lo dice otro estadounidense en un excelente video que dejé la liga en un comentario, cuando ellos van a regularizar sus documentos van al Instituto Nacional de Migración, no de Expatriados...

As a permanent resident in Mexico, I refer to myself as an immigrant. To me, “expat” sounds like I am no longer patriotic to the United States, and that’s not true at all. I consider myself as the same as any foreigner who has chosen to move to the United States, and the word that is most often used for them is “immigrant”. Keep your name! It’s fine! #1, an immigrant is someone moving to another country in order to become a citizen of that country therefore, giving up their original countries citizenship. An expat is someone moving to another country to live there while, keeping their original countries citizenship. Please, keep on doing what you do and don't change a thing.

The US and Mexico both allow one to have dual citizenship, so no need to forgo US citizenship when becoming a citizen of Mexico.
