Drywall finisher here. You should still sand in between coats to flatten lift offs. The mud will shrink considerably especially when pulling it tight and you’ll end up needing more coats to make it flat.

You don’t necessary have to sand between each coat. But it’s a very good idea before the final skim.

What sandpaper would I use to sand in between and after. I plan on doing popcorn ceiling removal and skim coating it. Three coats would you say as well? Thanks

Some men can understand this talent. Others just muddle through and expect good results.
My hands are finally getting bad at 60, but I’d do level 5 finishing for special clients.
The hawk and trowel are critical to speed, efficiency and superior performance.
I can do the same with large knives and pans, but not as fast, nor as easily.
Please invest time in these trades my friends, because I only have so many usable years left, other than leaving my tuned up tools to the next generation.
Good luck my friends. I’ll do this till I die with knives in my hands.
    🙏🏻

The most important thing is if the wall is being flooded with light by a window/door from the side(s). That's called a 'feature wall' and you want to give that kind of wall a 'level 5' finish (A.K.A. skim coat).

Pull it tight, but definitely don't use a lot of pressure. That compresses the mud and the difference in density between coats means you can leave ridges if you accidentally sand through the top coat

First off I just wanna throw in the concept that everybody seems to think you have to dry sand the wall after skim coating. This is 100,000% incorrect.. If you’re not putting drywall mud down like you’re drunk or have cerebral palsy you should be putting it on pretty goddamn flat. Also using a 24 inch or 36 inch wall skimmer reduces dramatically. Any travel marks. This is without a doubt the wrong way to drywall😅
