Drywall finisher here. You should still sand in between coats to flatten lift offs. The mud will shrink considerably especially when pulling it tight and you’ll end up needing more coats to make it flat.
What sandpaper would I use to sand in between and after. I plan on doing popcorn ceiling removal and skim coating it. Three coats would you say as well? Thanks

Use your last good years to teach others, there's too many half assed workers out here these days. I don't do drywall very often as a handyman and carpenter, but I've invested in all the tools needed to make it perfect. We need tradesman to care about there skill again
The most important thing is if the wall is being flooded with light by a window/door from the side(s). That's called a 'feature wall' and you want to give that kind of wall a 'level 5' finish (A.K.A. skim coat).
Pull it tight, but definitely don't use a lot of pressure. That compresses the mud and the difference in density between coats means you can leave ridges if you accidentally sand through the top coat

For anyone reading this..Turn your lights off at night put your flash light directly on the walls and turn it on and you’ll see how smooth your walls are..😢
First off I just wanna throw in the concept that everybody seems to think you have to dry sand the wall after skim coating. This is 100,000% incorrect.. If you’re not putting drywall mud down like you’re drunk or have cerebral palsy you should be putting it on pretty goddamn flat. Also using a 24 inch or 36 inch wall skimmer reduces dramatically. Any travel marks. This is without a doubt the wrong way to drywall😅
Shine the light across any wall, and it's gonna look like s#!%. PERIOD! on a level 4 finish, the light has to be 6' from the wall shining directly at the wall.
@ihave35cents95 lol clearly you don't drywall for a living then because there is a difference.....a concrete float can work but it's not meant for drywall

Was gonna say the same thing. You have to sand in between coats

You don’t necessary have to sand between each coat. But it’s a very good idea before the final skim.

Wall texture looks like shit
Or a proper plasterer
That only works until someone asks for smooth wall (level 5). Just learn to do every job good enough that it looks good with or withput texture.

As a painter I can tell you with certainty you’re full of shit . Sand out your edges

Late to this party but your mud work should be flatter than this and you should lightly sand before your final skim coat.
