How to Stop Birds from Building Nests, and Pooping around your House and Cars.

  • This is how I stopped birds from building nests, and pooping around our house, porch, outdoor patio furniture, car mirrors, hanging plants, pots, and wreaths. I use blue plastic grocery bags to keep birds from nesting in my ceiling fan light fixture and front door wreaths. This would also work in places like your lean-to and under your deck. The problem with building nests in our plants is: The nest gets bigger and bigger, and it crowds out the plant, and really hinders the plant's growth and health. This method uses no chemicals and won't harm or hurt the birds or the plants. How to stop birds from pooping on your car.

UPDATE. 6 weeks later: This continues to work! The bird that used to build a nest here keeps coming by. It flutters nearby for a minute and then flies away. No nest!

For the past month, I've been wrapping a toy snake around my car mirror when it's parked in my driveway .It has been working wonders for my bird poop problem! It really keeps the birds away

Rick, I have the same problem around the front of our house. Thanks for your video. I am a 68 years young resourceful guy also and appreciate problem solvers like you. I can tell from the non-response from you to some of the viewers that you are a patient and compassionate man... I, on the other hand, maybe not so much tolerance! To all the "haters" out there I say, get a life and click on to the next video!! Nobody forces you to watch or listen to anything. God Bless you and keep up the good works...

We agree. Light blue ceilings over decks, patios, front porches - anywhere you have an outdoor ceiling, paint it light blue and you will see a decrease of about 100% in birds making their homes on your property and worse...“messing” it up.

My ceilings on all my houses are blue! I live in the south and they still come and make nests. I bought owls didn’t work and tacked up a ordinary plastic bag and that’s the only thing that has kept them away.

Thanks for telling us this ! I live in a ground floor apt. The first year i had a birds nest on my patio. It was right above the back door. So naturally the bird poop went down the entire length of the door. And on the concret beneath the door. You can't do anything with babies in there. So we stopped using the patio and door . The poop piled up. I would clean it but it would be right back. It was disgusting. In April i removed the empty nest. Cleaned really good. Now on May 12th i find sunflower seeds shells on my patio. I swept them away. 2 days later they are there again. I tried using peppermint oil on a sponge but that doesn't work. Lysoll didn't work . So now I wil try a blue bag. Thanks ! I'm getting too old to be scrubbing bird poop off my patio everyday.
    Thanks !

Hi Denise. You’re welcome. As you saw, the bird will come back to the same spot every Spring looking to build a nest. I think they see it as a Blue Jay and a threat. You are way more dedicated than I am, I’d just stop feeding. It’s good to know, thanks for your dedication. I fought a robin who wanted to nest on top of my security camera last year for so long. I tried a rubber snake, she’d build on top of it. I waited until she came and would play hawk and then owl sounds through the speaker she was sitting on. That worked for about 3 times and then she didn’t care. I just had to tear the nest down every day and I guess her biological clock told her hey, there’s all kinds of trees and shrubs around here so she finally stopped. I keep a sunflower feeder out and 2 suet feeders but haven’t had any problems other than that one time for 10 years. My car stays in the garage. If they start messing up my deck living space, I will just stop feeding. Thanks for the tip!

Way to go Rick! I am on the same page with you--after spendiing 25 years in the military, I like fixing my own vehicles and doing a lot of my home repairs. I actually have this bird poop problem now with birds bombing my truck and wife's car. I was going to buy one of those fake snakes or battery powered Owls to scare off the birds, but they know its fake too I think after a while. I had some 25-gallon bags I use for my recycle bins and instead of throwing them away, I tied them on my truck mirrors. Bingo! stopped this little finch from attacking my cars! I could not believe how aggressive this bird is! I did use the blue shopping bag for my wife's car, and it did the trick. Keep these helpful videos coming to get lazy husbands off the couch. 🙂

Because I base my observation on the times when birds have "bombarded" a blue vehicle that I owned with bird droppings! (Who knows!)

Great video. I will try the blue bags and see if our birds hate them too. Last spring we had a Robin who liked to attack his reflection in some of the windows. Of course it's always near sunrise and he loved one of the bedroom windows. 😖 I tried a plastic owl, didn't work. I tried bird scare tape, it worked for a few days and he was back. My only solution was to cover the windows he liked with cardboard. After a month I took them down and he never returned. I also have a boat lift with a canopy and the Swallows love to build nests there. Here, the bird scare tape worked. They stayed away last summer.

Your vid gave me a chuckle. Mid 70's began with female Cardinal pecking the same area of same basement window. did not scratch, but pecked until there was blood covering glass. Few years later, moved to Main floor window directly above it, then to vehicle side mirrors & we did as you. This has stopped after some 30 years. This was only female Cardinals doing this every year. I have bird feeders 30' from South windows, but no longer the agravating pecking/ bloody mess. My present problem is Morning Doves flying into windows/screens, regardless of season (South & West Windows) sunny or cloudy days with an 40% mortality rate. At 75 I have concluded there is always going to be someone or thing testing my patience. Btw, if you have problems with Carpenter Bees, find a plastic grass seed bag, paint it brown & hang it near their burrows in wood. They fear they are Hornets & will leave the area.

At 9:06/10:01 -- Love, love, love that cuckoo clock! Thank you for your video on the blue bags. We don't have any stores here in Central Alabama, as far as I know, that use "sky" blue plastic bags, but I am willing to experiment. I have come up with the idea of stuffing a plastic storage bag with blue tissue paper and attaching that to the area where the starlings are nesting. We will see if the combo is "wiggly" enough to deter the feathered pesky creatures! If not, I will just cut some strips of sky blue tissue paper, and allow those to wave in the breeze at the location of the bird nesting site. Thank you again. Carpenter Bees are pollinators, and I don't want to kill them. Sometimes a Carpenter bee will come and fly around but they don't stay. I have a problem with birds flying over my driveway and depositing droppings as they fly over. This has been happening for the past 3 years. We always had a few droppings now and then, but now, the driveway is almost covered in droppings. It's horrible and it begins every Spring. I don't know if it's because of birds nesting during this time and flying back and forth for food, but they seem to have a particular route and it's over my driveway. We don't have any large trees, but some neighbors do. Yesterday, it took me over an hour with a long handled stiff bristled broom to scrub off the droppings and hose down. I had to go over some spots a few times but, I finally got it clean. My husband later told me the birds hit the driveway again in 3 areas. I went back out cleaning up as I did before. I'm trying to keep up, but it's not easy. Once the Summer is here, it's not quite as bad. I wish there was something I could do to change their route so they are not flying over our driveway. Our fence gets hit too. It's so distressing and disgusting. Our driveway is the only one that gets so many droppings. Most of the neighbors don't get any or just one or two. Good to see that you were able to control the situation. My problem is one that likely can't be controlled. When the Fall season rolls around, we will have our neighbor's Maple tree to clean up after. That huge tree drops a ton of seed pods and I'm cleaning up for months. I used to like where I lived, but not anymore. We're retired and it's getting difficult to clean up so many messes.

The birds in your area seem to be more aggressive than the ones I deal with and we have a bird feeder in the back yard! They love to perch on the finials on top of my deck posts and poop so I found this sticky goo in a caulking tube years ago which kept them off but it was messy and would melt in hot weather so now I just go out once a week and just scrub the poop off the finials and the railings. I notice that in the Spring robins like to sit on the edge of my drive and sidewalks while, I assume, they look for worms in the yard and of course, poop before they leave. A couple of years ago we had a bird roosting at night in our front door wreath. I Googled about bird vision and they are very sensitive to colors so the blue must be a color they do not like. We do enjoy watching the birds so I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

I can only add that plastic snakes work to keep them from eating my seeds right away. They soon learn the snakes will not harm, and will feed right beside them. My seeds are sprouted by then, so no big deal. The best thing I ever found to keep almost everything away was one of those large colorful floaters kids use in pools. The one I used had a huge monster looking thing. I tied it so it would hit against a nearby tree with every little gust. I quit having deer , burds, and garden flourished.

I have to admit this sounded like a hoax to me, but I was desperate and decided to try it. I have a 16' retracting awning over my back deck that I have issues with birds wanting to build nests inside when the awning is pulled back. You think I could find a blue plastic bag from somewhere ?
So I got an idea to buy a couple blue pool noodles, cut them in half length wise, and tuck the strips along the top of the metal shield that protects the rolled up fabric.
Unbelievable . . . they have quit building their nests ! I still don't get it, but hey . . . it does work !
Thank you for the brilliant idea !

I live in North Idaho and I just moved into a newly constructed home and I've got starlings that have nested in my vents. I am having a guy take care of it for me. I've done some research and when I put the vent overs over the vents that need to open, like the dryer vent I'm going to put shiny curly ribbon on them so they can blow in the wind. I read they don't like shiny things that move around. They also suggested a CD because it's reflective. I really enjoyed your video and I'm curious why the blue bag works. Let's try to find the answer.

I wonder if you could paint the fan and plades a similar blue as the bag would work?
I know you can suspend a DVD in an area to keep bats away (messes with exhosounding). I think I remember someone saying the rotating DVD reflection can also deter birds. Haven't tried it myself.
You could paint the wreath hanger black - no shinem

I think that birds can see light in the UV spectrum. If you have a UV light source, like an LED UV light, try shining it on the blue bag and see what type of reflection you get from it. It may be that the dye they use making the blue bag gives off an irritating color that birds don't like.

Go figure... blue plastic... who would have guessed. I did once have a wide porch with the ceiling painted sky-blue, and thinking back, no bird issues there. We have a few places in our current house where robins would nest, and poop down the side of the house. At the end of last season, we knocked the nests down, then my wife took a few old CDs and tied one up, loose so it could move in the breeze, at each nesting site. They never returned.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this works because of the blue color of Blue Jays. I have observed Blue Jays in my backyard killing and eating the insides of other birds. So the other birds might recognize the color blue as a dangerous indication of nearby Blue Jays. I never knew this happened until a few years ago, and I was about 65 years old. I have seen Blue Jays all my life but never observed this before.

@@rickstid-bits Just tried this today on the roof, and unfortunately at least 1 small bird was constantly coming back trying to find its nest and babies which we destroyed and sealed the gaps. So I can say for a fact that as usual, when birds have made nests with eggs and little birdies in there, nothing will stop them from coming back except if there is no way for them to get in. I have not tested it anywhere else that I wanted to tho, perhaps I will add some blue strips tomrrow in a few places that birds go just to throw their shit... and will let you know later next week. Obviously it's too early for me to give results! I'm checking your channel to see whether anything else is interesting. Thanks.
