I wasn't following much of what Tim was saying until he said, "You know if you're on the right path, or not. Or at least you know when you're not on it." The right path can be hard to find, but I'm pretty certain most of us realize when we're not walking the path we should be. I think this is why so many people are miserable. They're not on the right path and they know it, but fear of the unknown and the comfort of what is familiar often keeps us from doing the things we were meant to do.
@@brianschwartz9294 since I made this comment a few years ago, I read Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations and The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holliday. I still need to dive into Zeno and Seneca though.
@@neroknight9787 at least you have that sense that maybe you’re not on the path that you should be. Knowing that is half the battle. Since I wrote that comment years ago, I think I’m finally on the right path, or at least I’m heading in the right direction. Best of luck!
Tim says at the very end about how you know when you're on the path and you know when you're not. Most times in my life I would be watching this and thinking "I need to get back on the path." This time, however, I'm on the path and got goosebumps when he detailed how being on the path feels. I agree. Makes you wonder why you ever leave the path. I guess the older we get, the more we recognize the dukkha being off the path causes and spend less and less time off.
Jocko. Your videos are helping me mentally with my recovery from a broken Tib fib, stress fractures from pack marching lead to a break. You're helping keep me on track and remembering my discipline to get me where I need to be. Thank you.
6:26 I feel like that right in this moment. I'm calm and focused. I know that I'm on the path, which gives me inner peace. And my mind is calm as well. It does not stray off. It stays right with me.
It is certainly apparent that, as I become better at computer science, the more I can understand life and the things that happen around me. Becoming great at something is in part learning new skills and honing them but also learning how to assess a problem and figure out how to apply a set of those skills to solve the problem. This is why becoming great at something also makes you better at life.
Because of the similarity between all types of games, once you win at one game, it becomes easier to win all the others. Winning the first game is the hardest part of course.
I feel that when present on your path you are in identity. That you found the habits that support the person you want to be. That you are doing exactly what you want.
There is no drug or amount of money that can make you feel the way you feel when you wake up at 4:00am and your feet hit the floor and you smile! Cause you are in go mode and you love what you do! It takes some time to get there but when you get there it’s fuck#n amazing!!!!
The way I quit smoking 35 years ago was I told About 300 people on my job that if they ever saw me with a cigarette in my mouth after New Years Day, they can walk up to me and smack it out of my face and I will buy them dinner anywhere they want to. Well that worked. They used to follow me everywhere, in the bathroom how to the parking lot in my car. 35 years later, never went back.
musicvixen24 I don’t know man, but Jocko makes me nervous. Not afraid of him per se, but about how far off the mark I’ve been for half a century. Since I started listening to and reading Jocko I’ve become aware of how little I’ve accomplished, how weak I’ve been, and how little mental toughness I have. I sometimes find myself having to stop listening to him briefly because I can only take it and incorporate the needed discipline in small doses.
There use to be an epic speech called “stay on the war path” that seems like it’s been taken down. It was my go to when I needed some motivation. Now the only thing I’m finding with that title is totally different
Knowing what you should do and keeping yourself to do it are two entirely different things... How do I keep myself to it? I have found it and lost it so many times.

TimFerris follows the path of stoicism. Great books n the subject look for anyone writing from Zeno or Seneca the younger.
I know this is pretty late I’m experiencing what you said rn and it’s a crazy thing to go through

Mark Ernest but now that you are conscious of it, you can make new and better decision. Don't look back.
