DCX2496 Brick fix

- I attempted to update to the newest firmware v.1.18a and bricked the DCX unit. This is my adventure to try and get it un-bricked, and some thoughts about the different versions of the DCX remote, 1.16a - vs - 1.16

That’s exactly what happens. Thank you very much. I bought a used one and had nothing better to do than upgrading to the latest firmware via USB-Serial Adapter. Goodbye DCX 👋 Then I bought one adapter with the FTDI Chip, which I know is the best because we use them at work and everything until now worked with it. But still the same behavior. Luckily I found that 15 year old Dell Inspiron with good old Windows XP. And a Serial Cable from work. So now I’m back in business 👌 Thank you very much again 🙏🙏🙏

@@mahatma_manett Hi Christof best regards. The equipment is Bheringer DCX2496, for the conection to Pc use Interfaz RS232 to USB cable, the S.O is Windows 10 Prof 64 Bits. Thanks
@@simotecsas7803 Hi, the USB to Serial interface is the problem. You have to have a PC or a laptop with a built in or PCI hardware interface.
I tried three different USB to Serial adapters and none of them did the job to the end.
@@mahatma_manett Hi Cris, I buy a rs232 cable and connected to a computer with windows 7 professional to the serial port and the problem persist. when trying to install it is version 1.18a downloaded of oficial site bheringer. With the version 1.17 is Ok the process with 1.18a is failed. what else do you suggest to do?
Update. I finally got the 1.18A firmware working on the DCX. I will be running it for the next week, to see if the lockup problem has gone away. My guess is that the difference between 1.17, and 1.18A is a stability upgrade. Will report back Next week. a week from 5-20-2023
I got this Shit running with 1.18A
Got bricked and recoverd with 1.17 as you show in your video.
But the step to 1.18A is possible. You only need a Hex-Editor an manipulate the update file.
Remove everything from 1.18A Update to Offset 65536 (10000h) so the first 64k bytes. (The real update starts with 00 02 00 00 00 00 03 00, so this is may the reason why it crashes on 1% every time)
Also Killing every FF in the End (for me it starts at 211614 (33A9Eh)). This is the reason why it crashes after 88% cause the flash is full.
Flash the new file from Recovery (not tested to flash from a working 1.17, cause my device was at that moment bricked). Have a working 1.18A after this :)
Also i have a crappy USB-RS232 Adapter, its working with all my other stuff well, so its not a driver problem and seems to be an issue with the update file that beheringer provides.
Please let me know if someone has got it working also. I can also provide my updatefile if someone needs.

Today I've tried myself. I was using the RS232 of my motherboard so not an adaptor.
This is what I found:
- even updating to 1.17 was broken, the programming would stop every few seconds but it would let me continue. Tried 1.16 and 1.16a, no difference
- different RS232 settings would yield slightly different results (i.e. less "stops")
- I could also update to 1.18. It would stop many many times during the update but it would not work at the end.
This is where I realised that using the bootloader routine, the writing never stops and works flawlessly... with 1.17. With 1.18 it always stops at 88% and it's non-recoverable.
I have noticed that 1.18 is 500KB ish and 1.17 is 150KB ish. Wondering whether 1.18 applies to a different revision? I will try with a different RS232 soon.
BTW, both 1.16 and 1.16a software never crashed. Sometimes they hung for like 30 seconds but I never had to force them close.
Can you explain how you did the bootloader version?
Also maybe the new firmware 1.18a is for the newer unit without the memory card slot.
@@DaneTS24 what do you mean with bootloader? Yes I believe 1.18 - either versions - are for the newer hw. That said, 1.18 I was sent by Beringer has a P036H tag on the file and my board has P036H tag on it. I'm puzzled but even Beringer didn't know much.

Another thing I noticed is that the update 1.17 is a zip file and the 1.18 is a tar file, the 1.18a is also compressed twice(archive within an archive) so maybe extracting it ones using 7zip would work? If it doesn't maybe you can even go further and extract the tar file and recompress it in zip format and try to flash again.

HI, thank's for your video, my DCX is broken because i've tried to update 1.17 to 1.18, now he have the screen always green... Ok, i find the light with your video ... Maybe upload in first 1.16 and after 1.17... but NO he stop to 1%, i tried to upload directly the 1.18, again stop to 1% He show an screen who say "file sending not complet, check connection" What do you think about this ? I use an adapter "goobay" USB 2 onWin7 -RS232 (5 pin only inside) But i see the DCX on port com.
I am a musician and use an active pa system. The yamaha dbr12 to be precise. Would this unit benefit me and my sound in anyway? I loop a full band sound in my daily sets. How would i link all this up?
Do we know what 1.18a brings to the table?

I try to Upgrade the Firmware from 1.17 to 1.18 ... IT was fail
Now the Behringer want to start.
I try to flash IT again Back to v1.17 but after 1% it comes an error "lose Connection". I try it with my laptopt Windows 10 pro and aten USB rs232 Adapter.
Now IT try it with my old PC with rs232 on Board and Windows 2000.
IT was the Same Problem after 1% it fails... I also try it with a new cable

I think there is a problem with the front end loader (the remote programs). There are 2 versions. I think the older one is more stable.
Try the older version of the interface, and v1.16. You will need to use the 1.16a version to reload the 1.17 firmware, then use the 1.16 (non a) remote as it works better.
I had to watch it again, since it's been a long time since I did this.
So, is summery
Run the 1.16a remote
Install the 1.17 bin file
You will need to start the dcx using the Press and hold the a input while powering on.
You may need a fresh boot on you computer to get it to work. Good luck :)

Press input A, and the power button. Then load the 1.17 BIN file. If that works your good-ish.
