I'm into politics too, and these are tough times, indeed! I agree that people who vote should know civics. It's too bad we can't test them as we do for driver's licenses. Thanks for posting!
I enjoyed hearing your thoughts! I haven't seen this unit, but I think this is very much the general impression I've gotten of it. I think that realistically it's hard to write information that's challenging enough for high schoolers and also at a reasonable level that young elementary students can understand...which is probably the reason that most of the time, we don't end up doing a whole lot with family subjects given the wide age gap and level gap between the 14 year old and the 10 year old.
You hit the nail on the head. I think on certain subjects, there’s info for young kids, and there’s info written for an older audience. But Gather Round is writing info as if these audiences are the same and that’s a huge challenge. Now....I think you CAN do this with Bible bc I do it everyday. But I think that’s the spirit working. Even the youngest ones can understand spiritual truths if they are saved. But other subjects.....young kids vs older children...that’s a difficult ask.
These were my thoughts on GR for the most part too! I thought this was well written for middle & high schooler, but it was WAY over my elementary kids' heads and we quit trying to do this unit after lesson 7 I think it was. They would literally moan and groan when I pulled it out. However, my friend who had a middle schooler, absolutely LOVED this unit. We were doing this around the time of the election & I wanted to brush up on my government knowledge so I ended up just reading the rest of the lessons on my own and I enjoyed it. I agree that the notebook pages for this unit were very dry and boring for the most part. My kids were initially very into the "create your own country" project but then when it was wanting them to decided government type etc, they quickly lost complete interest. I am hoping to revisit this unit down the road when they are both middle schoolers! We ended up watching lots of YT videos on government topics and reading lots of books that put the concepts on their level after we ditched the GR unit.
That’s reassuring that we had the same thoughts!!! And you finishing it yourself....LOL....that’s something I would do too! I often end up starting an educational video for my kids and then I’m the only one finishing it. Haha!

All of the gather round units have a high school workbook. So yes.
