  • I am retiring my old GoalZero Lighthouse Mini Lantern and testing out two new small lanterns for backpacking and camping. The Fenix CL26R and the Streamlight Siege X USB. Check out my video as I compare the two and share what I think are the must have features for a backpacking lantern.

So good to encounter a review for actual backpacking lanterns. So many reviews refer to backpacking lanterns, then only cover larger, heavier "camping" lanterns. Own an "LEDLENSER" with a "warm light" function, but it's too heavy to justify for backpacking. Great for vehicle camping or emergency home use. Really like the fact that "Fenix" lantern has so many low lumen settings. I find it nice when backpacking to have a low illumination on for a number of hours, before going to sleep. A psychological comfort compared to blackness. A warm glow option is almost essential for this unless inner tent is a warm colour. Had an interest in an earlier "Fenix", but it got discontinued. Glad that the backpacker focus is still there!

I've never used a lantern at camp. When I need to get up and do something I just use my headlamp. Thanks for the video brother

Nice vid. Bright ideas! I had to laugh at the red light SOS. I guess you would use that if you have strep throat and cannot softly say “ I am right here rescuer.” 😂

I heard you have a few exes that follow you around the woods! These are awesome options!

For me it's a requirement that it can take standard AA batteries. AA is the gold standard.

I currently used a Hi-Gear solar lantern but it is A blue silicone so the light is cool, B solar will take days to charge it so pointless, C it has a stupid proprietary magnetic charger with the equally crap micro usb connection.
Going forwards I will be looking for something brighter and that has USB-C.

Which did you determine was the better lantern for your needs?

So far with my testing, I am leaning toward the Streamlight Siege X as my hiking and backpacking lantern. I find that having the lantern being able to remember the mode is a HUGE benefit. Especially the red light mode. Plus, the flashlight mode on the Streamlight is a much better flashlight when having to make trips away from the campsite.

@@BarnYardOutdoors I have the larger Siege lantern and the 3xAA one. I like them both. But I wanted rechargeable and small. I do really like and trust the water resistance of them too. I am considering that one or the Nitecore LR60. Thanks for the review!
