- Ok guys what we have here is a used, possibly VERY used, Atlas N scale Fairbanks Morse H15-44 locomotive that should be DCC. I picked this up at a train show locally that was part of an estate collection.

Edit: I did decide to order replacement parts. new DCC board and two copper contact strips from Atlas ~$35 shipped.
I have a video where I have instlled a Loksound V5 sound decoder in one of these. Had to mill the chassis a little for the speaker. The decoder that is in the one you have is a Lenz and sometimes require alot of throttle.
Interestingly. Most of the DCC locomotives that I have bought used, that didn't work when I received them, were Lenz decoders.
Sorry it's not a runner, yet. After you decide how to proceed may we see an episode 70-B or perhaps an update? BTW, I like the new open👍.
I ordered the copper contact strips and a replacement decoder. Once those come in i'll put together a video of them going in.
Just take it all apart, and CLEAN it !
Unfortunately it wasn't that simple this time.
Are the frames made of pot metal or a cast aluminum and what would happen if it were polished
I believe they are cast aluminum but not 100% certain. I doubt they're zinc like the old Proto and Athearn frames.
So whats your plan for the sd70m?1
The preliminary plan is to send it off for paint. After that happens I MAY do a decoder install but not sure.
Hi Shane I ordered Katy 99.00 and free shipping .
That's less than I paid for mine. See the good Kato deals are out there.
23:46 is that power blade touching the frame?
it's kindof an optical illusion. Once the board was on it pushed the contact down away from the frame.
If a DC locomotive were accidently placed on the DCC track, and tested with the DCC controller, like the first part of this video, would the constant AC track power be likely to damage the DC motor?
DCC is actually not AC current. It's hard to explain but it is DC. The difference is that it's a high constant voltage. The reason people sometimes think it's AC is because there is a modulation in it that carries the DCC commands. Rather than being a pure sine wave forward and back like AC current it's basically a really rapid on-off-on-off, etc. Now that being said i've heard it's not the best thing in the world to try to run DC engines on a DC track despite there being provisions built into some DCC systems to do so. Like it can cause premature wear on the brushes and commutator of the motor. if you put a DC engine on a DCC track in DCC mode it'll make a high pitch buzzing/whining noise and not move. the buzzing you're hearing is the actual modulation.
@@Trains-With-Shane Thank you for the information.
@@computernerd803You're welcome!
Can you not overlap the broken contact strip and solder it together. should work??
Not with my soldering skills. or lack thereof. new strips are only ~$1.75 each so have a few on the way
I just found a N scale SD 70 ace Katy number1988 Dcc drop in ready it said for 99.00 what do you think
Check out the video review I did of one of those exact units on my channel 😉
Hi Shane I ordered the MKT Bachmann GP40 ,Atlas MKT 40 ft box car, standard coupler height gauge for N scale and a 4 pack of 7 5/16 inch Kato uni track for now will the couplers on the Bachmann and the Atlas work together if not what couplers would you recommend me getting .
I think you'll be ok with the stock couplers.
Ok, I did two of these in sound. Heres a link to one of the videos, showing the install under the hood.

I'll watch the video right now. I've never done a custom DCC/Sound install. Kinda scared, lol.
