Emily's never ending enthusiasm makes me excited even though three minutes ago I couldn't have cared less about flying squirrels. How does she do that? I want to find passion like that.
I love how enthusiastic Emily gets whenever she gets to hold an animal, no matter if it's dead or alive. She has a true passion for nature, it's wonderful to watch.
Actually Erin, and for everyone who does not know, you can be an amazing fan too! A subbable.com you can donate a flat rate or a monthly payment, and you rack up points based on donations. You can use those points to get perks, like cool items, upgrade your pickpocket or sneak skill, or have them mention you in a video. This way no funders get to play adds or dictate the material that they show, but they still get money to scoop brains, or talk about physics, or just talk really fast about whatever like Hank. So be an awesome fan and donate today. Any amount is accepted!
I don't think Heather Hsu is a Subbable subscriber. I think she's an executive at Chicago Museum of Natural History who wanted to bring the Brain Scoop to her museum.
4:48 this whole scene sounds like one kid showing of his favorite toy airplane to another kid. There's just so much genuine, almost child-like enthusiasm!
Emily's excitement over those flying squirrels drives home the point of how awesome is that collection. I wouldn't have been able to appreciate the fact without her enthusiasm.
This guy reminds me so much of my grandma. she is a microbiologist/planktologist and she taught me that science was fun. I swear that one of my first words was "copepod" and we would go to the beach all the time and collect samples, and every single thing I found or was curious about she explained it to me perfectly and turned it into a fun lesson. we recently went on a cruise together, and we asked the captain if we could cast a plankton net off the side of the boat XD
There is something wonderful in watching two people be total unabashed geeks about something. It's a remarkable and personal joy that I feel privileged to observe
I visited the Chicago field museum. The t-Rex is named Sue and the original skull is not on the body. It's upstairs because it is too heavy to be on the body. The head on the body is a replica of the skull. 😀
Whoa... I never thought of fossils inspiring mythology. It seems so obvious now, but before this moment, I'd really only thought of giant squid inspiring sirens and sea monsters.
Check out a book called "The First Fossil Hunters: Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times" by Adrienne Mayor. That's the whole topic. Very cool. Also, much the of strongest dragon-lore from Chinese comes from regions with major dinosaur fossil finds.
I once heard the theory that the fossils of beaked dinosaurs like Protoceratops may have inspired the myth of the Griffin. If the bones of the frill have been broken off, say from fighting a predator, then miners in ye olden times may find the skeleton of a large four-legged animal with a beak, clawed feet, and what appears to be the remnants of wing bones...
Well this is pretty weird. I was talking about human anatomy today with my grandmother, and we had the SAME vertebrae talk. "How many neck bones does a human have" (me) you mean cervical vertebrae? Seven. "How many does a giraffe have?" I'm not sure...probably seven. Then I brought up the hero shrew. I just found out about The Brain Scoop yesterday. Already addicted.
when I volunteered at the Field, we had this cart with different animal skulls - there was a baby elephant jaw bone that was enormous. I'm very excited for Emily to come to Chicago.
Emily Graslie, you fantastic woman, where have you been all my life!? I'm loving your channel - it's really good. I'm binge-watching them all and learning LOTS! Well done and thank you.
SUDDENLY FINDING MYSELF UNREASONABLY EXCITED ABOUT FLYING SQUIRRELS. Emily, I say it every time but you are SO much fun to watch! I just want to watch you and learn all day!
hi. What a great website! I have learned a lot from you, and that's pretty good for a 67 year old retiree from Vancouver Island. Keep up the terrific work!
Not really after the answer. I know most donated specimens would have had the tusks withheld by the OG owners. and once the flesh is removed the tusk is fairly easy to remove and it makes sense to store these massive ivory logs separately.
The Field has behind the scenes nights periodically - I think it is mostly for members, but I bet there is a way to find a member to get you in if you aren't one. I got to go into the collection a few years back with a member and was bowled over by the whole experience.
Emily, I just found your show, thanks to your appearance on the Sci-show! I have two Sugar Gliders, so I enjoyed the segment on the flying squirrels. I didn't know they could get so big either! Keep up the good work! I'll be watching!
Emily's never ending enthusiasm makes me excited even though three minutes ago I couldn't have cared less about flying squirrels. How does she do that? I want to find passion like that.
Heather Hsu is a wonderful person.
They're both so excited. It's so adorable.
what if this was emily's unofficial interview? "yup she's amazing i'm hiring her right now."
I love how enthusiastic Emily gets whenever she gets to hold an animal, no matter if it's dead or alive. She has a true passion for nature, it's wonderful to watch.
Emily just said "hell yeah!" at, essentially, her job interview. This gives me hope for my career!

Oh my god Emily and her reactions! She is just too cute I love her
The best part of this Chicago adventure is watching Emily freak out about all of the things.
This is probably my favorite episode just because of Emily's reaction to the humongous flying squirrels.
This channel is insanely interesting! I wish i was there!
"Hell yeah!" I am really enjoying this series.
RAW LEARNING. this is the best channel ever. Thank you
ALL of the reasons I love museums. ALL of the reasons I want to become a collections manager
I come here for the enthusiasm. The learning is just a side effect. Thank you for both.
This was super fascinating. I loved it. I also now want to see a UA-cam series on the evolution of myths.

.... gliding is obviously a good trait as it evolved in Sugar gliders and "flying lemurs" aswell
I'm always so excited by emilys reactions. that just cheers me up :)
I like how he keeps trying to catch Emily off her game with all these questions, but she just knows all the things.
