I was literally just there two weekends ago I live like 3 hours away from the museum as well. I got a picture of me and my son in front of the quetzalcoatlus. It's hard to get the entire quetzalcoatless in one picture.
"This is a very large building to lose 3 very energetic children in." *as several energetic children attempt to scale the enormous skeleton in the background*
I live in chi and took scientific illustration classes at the Field Museum 5 years ago… they were dusty then, and they’re STILL dusty! I’ll be working at the Field here soon and I hope to bring this to the curator’s attention when I start. “Pushes in glasses”
I was at the Field today and the Mold-a-ramas are still present and operational. I know the Lincoln Park Zoo removed theirs recently, so you might be thinking of that.
I just went two weeks ago and saw Sue the exhibits open now and it's amazing. How could you be that close to that giant quetzalcoatla statue and not show it? I even seen you look up at it Steven after you got your little plastic quetzalcoatlus. I will say it is usually mopped by people getting pictures so that's understandable.
I'm so lucky to live within an hour's drive from the Field Museum. Seeing all these beautiful mounts makes me want to cry, especially the recent addition of Sobek the Spinosaurus for whom I was able to attend the unveiling party on my birthday.
I got to see Sue 21 years ago, after the display was complete. I'm from Las Vegas, so it was a dream come true to be in the Field Museum. I didn't get to see the brachiosaurus until 10 years later, when it was on display at O'Hare airport.
At my childhood museum the big showpiece was a mount featuring Saurophaganax and Apatosaurus. When Sue toured there when I was a kid it blew me away so much to finally see the “main character” of the concept of dinosaurs that I pinned myself to the wall and was scared of getting close. Seeing the mount again at the Field Museum was the first time I ever really got to experience it.
Love your content! It would be fun to see videos where you talk about accuracies and inaccuracies on dinosaurs in video games such as "Jurassic world evolution" and "Prehistoric kingdom", "The Isle" etc. Good work.
They explained why they don't want to do T. rex yet. It would probably be a two hour long episode if the Velociraptor episode is any indicator. That would annoy a lot of viewers.
@@brettgabbitas1852 They could always split it in two parts. Lots of channels that have more or less constant video lengths do that if a subject requires a significant expansion... and it would also only be fair when the increased effort to make the video would lead to twice the viewing numbers, wouldn't you say? Maybe split it a bit up in direct talk about the anatomy and the other part more history of discovery and problems with past reconstructions etc.?
OMG! So glad you were able to go back to the Field! I grew up in Chicago, and my favorite Museum has always been the Field, followed by the Art Institute, the Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, and MCA in that order. I had the privilege of seeing part of the fossil storage in the Field, when I was part of Paul Sereno's summer paleo program; it was beautiful and amazing!!! I live ten minutes from Museum Park now, and definitely go more often!! Please bring a mic next time you travel to museums, they are insane when it comes to noise, even in person it's hard to hear. Awesome video!!!
I'm from Chicago. I make a point to visit SUE every time I'm back (not often since I'm now 6 states away). They're honestly what I look forward to most when I'm in town. I was just there a couple years ago and tried to get all the dino coloramas (agree, that smell is so nostalgic), but I missed the flying reptile so I guess I have something else to look forward to when I'm in. Thanks for the vid!
Your “how dinosaurs became a lifelong love” story is so close to my own that I could recite it word for word and not be lying. I love this channel and I’m excited to check out your Etsy shop. Keep making great videos!
Oh my gosh, I just got to the part with the Brachiosaur. I had exactly the same experience of going up to the balcony and looking it in the eye and just. Obsessing over it. It was such a great choice on the part of the museum designers to place the mount there.
I love the Field Museum, the big pterosaur model wasn't there when I last went! I need to go back and get a set of the dino Mold a Ramas, just for nostalgia's sake
Yup. It started for me when I visited the natural history museum in London when I was about 10. Fantastic, incredible place....just wish it wasn't in London....
One more museum on my list of museums still to visit. But first I want to get to some of the European ones, like Museum of Natural History in London, the Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen in Brussels (with the iguanodons), the Museum vor Naturkunde in Berlin and the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris.
As an ameteur that likes to draw paleoart(particularly dinosaurs and other Mesozoic reptiles) it is frustrating how scant the information/refeferences are for these animals. Often Wikipedia is the only source of comprehensive information about any given animal, and there's a great degradation of the information between well known species and lesser known ones; there's still a lot of information ommitted on well known species like the formations they're from and hypothesized lifestyles. I hope that there's easier access to this material in the future. I wouldn't be suprised if this relates back to the "dinosaurs are for children" dogma
Yeah, it sucks how if you go beyond like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops you're lucky if the species even gets a single paragraph to describe it. All the interesting information is locked behind near impenetrable scientific journals of hundreds of pages with endless text and science babble. And good luck finding any kind of reference material for anything but a profile view.
CALLING UPON YOU GUYS TO POST THE PHOTOS YOU TOOK SOMEWHERE as an ameteur/hobbyist paleoartist i'd LOVE to see more dynamic and comprehensive views of the animals :)
When Sue was on display on the main floor, Stanley Hall of The Field Museum where you could stand and look Sue in the eyes. They have since moved her as alluded to here in this video. That's one thing I miss about her being in the main hall.
I'm sure it was fun going to Chicago, also I love the photos yall took, and this video was very awesome. Also my favorite part, was "I appreciate your lens",also hope yall are having a great day
Thank You for adding closed captions! Even though the audio was quite good, it's still hard to make out what you're saying because of my Auditory Procesing Disorder, so yeah, thank you for that guys! 💖
Aw man. Last time I was in Chicago was in 2019 for Star Wars Celebration and I didn't have a chance to visit the museum while we were there, just didn't have enough time. Makes me want to go back now.
My wife and I had planned a trip to Chicago this year, but had to cancel it because of CoVID. I was really looking forward to going to the Field Museum so with these photos and video at least I can experience some of it. Thank you for amazing content and I can't wait to see the herrerasaurus episode!
The story time part. Omg! The only thing I remember from the field museum as a kid was the Brachiosaurus in the "great hall" Didn't realize you're from the Midwest also, very awesome! I haven't been back since I was a little kid and can't wait to get back, even if it's a 3.5 hour drive. I've never seen Sue 😞 Idk if you've been to the Milwaukee Museum but they have a very inaccurate, but awesome, trex eating a triceratops diorama. I loved that as a little little kid.
Hi there, I'm new to the channel. Just thought I'd throw out the suggestion to come by Rockford IL if you haven't already. It's only a little over an hour outside of Chicago and is home to the Burpee Museum which is home to Jane, a disputed Nanotyrannus.
Were this not pandemic times I'd suggest hopping on a flight to New Zealand to check out some living tuatara. We don't have a lot of dinosaurs but we've got a bunch of living ones.
I really don't understand why an actual MUSEUM, would have a "no photos or filming" policy on exhibits... Much like references in books, as long as proper attribution is credited where necessary. I can see it for something like a laser show or some similar "live" event.... but for a static display, intended for people to SEE there should be no restrictions on it...Particularly for a maker who has a national (and international!) viewers, most of which would not be able to ever get to see the museum at all. it would be a good 12-14 hour drive for me to get to Chicago; i likely will never get to see the museum; closest i've been would be sitting at the airport waiting for a flight layover, hardly a good time to take the side trip out to the museum and still make the flight to my destination...
I wish I could visit a place like that but in my country there's little of that stuff. By the way, you asked about games to make gameplays. Jurassic world evolution is pretty cool and jurassic world evolution 2 is coming closely I think.
Hello Steven nice video! And I wanted to ask you something... What do you know and think about Oviraptor Philoceratops? Do you think it should be renamed because it's name has nothing to do with the poor fella... It wasn't stealing Protoceratops eggs.

Well did you think about asking them by Email if you could use it in an informative video where you also mention their museum?
"This is a very large building to lose 3 very energetic children in." *as several energetic children attempt to scale the enormous skeleton in the background*
But that was outside ;) You do not need to go to Chicago to lose Children outdoors! :D
It's rounded to the closest three
With these close-up shots you can really clearly see that the dinos need some dusting lol

I'm so glad you got the Mold-a-rama , as they're no more, sadly... One last go around here... Gonna miss them.
Wait, are they gone from the Field? I went there a little over a month ago and was able to get all but the Apatosaurus.
I was at the Field today and the Mold-a-ramas are still present and operational. I know the Lincoln Park Zoo removed theirs recently, so you might be thinking of that.
@@TheRunningLeopard I think Julius meant more "you never see them anymore nowadays" as in at other places than the Chicago Fields Museum. ;)
I got to pet a tuatara once. I wish I had more of a story about this but it just felt like a lizard.
i really wish australia had a dinosaur museum as big as the chicago one, all we have is a muttaburrasaurus skeleton and some pterosaurs
People literally come from around the world. I've met many tourists from other countries there who were really glad they had gone. Just a thought 😉

I can't believe they still have the Mold a Rama machines! I thought they took those out! And a Quetzalcoatlus on top of that!
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Steven. It's very obvious how personal those memories are. You moved a grown man to tears :')

This really is an awesome channel! I do hope that you’ll do a Tyrannosaurus rex episode sometime!
they actually did a trex skeleton episode before
also there was a tarbosaurus episode
close enough to trex
That was before this was made its own channel, the channel they were on before is called "Chaotic Good"

Same, specifically with the Brachio in the main hall and thinking "Field Trips" meant going to the Field Museum.
