Hi Steve. In my humble opinion she speaks a lot about how we don't acquire languages but she doesn't really talk about how we go about acquiring languages. Hearing the language even when it is spoken correctly by native speakers doesn't guarantee anything. We must comprehend messages ( spoken or written) as Stephen Krashen claims. And I know this too well, understanding what native speakers say in Russian is horribly difficult for beginners. I've been learning Russian for years and I still rarely understand real Russian spoken in real situations. I'm still learning to read easy short stories.
+Plain Pizza HAHA I thought I was the only one who noticed. I even turned away from the screen in order to not see the subtitles, and thought, "Hey, that word sounds familiar!! (the word for "again") haha.
Brilliant! Thanks for the videos. They are perfect, and you're really smart! And that gesture you make after "грамматика" is priceless, as it is the entire video!
thank you maria, you definitely helped my russian in the past 2 years - what people dont realize, is that the importance of immersion, and your insane hard work in putting together those subtitles. but I understand your frustration of stepping away - people are foolish and inherently lazy and unable to appreciate all this, wish you a good life in seattle, and I will always thinking of you when i continue to learn more russian. phrases is so key
Privet! Girl, besides being beautifully young, you really got me attached to your speaking. It's so nice! I'm sure I'll be speaking Russian soon. Congrats for the idea!
I always believed in this idea when it comes to learning a new language but unfortunately i never found someone who could teach russian with the same idea.. It's nice to finally find your channel here.
I like your teaching style very much. I've had some Russian language practice, so I understand maybe half of what you say when you speak, but it's very good practice for me. Love the videos, please keep making them! :)
It is an excellent video and you say a great truth for some years English and French study and I have always thought about what you say during the video. A long time ago I started using this way of learning languages and it has helped me a lot, I am happy to know that I am not the only one who thought of this way I hope that many people see your video. Thank you very much for making this video

I don't know if I will learn Russian by following this channel but I am sure that after a couple of videos I will definitely fall in love with this teacher :D
Damn again!! You hit the nail on the head, as this is exactly the problem I've had with my other languages, of over thinking the grammar. Your amazing!
I haven't actually started to learn the language yet, but I'm planning to and I'm glad I found your videos. I have already learnt the pharse "snova i snova" from the previous video, so thank you. :D Greetings from Hungary! Subscribed!
Hey Masha is this correct ? "Я вижу тебя в каждом разделе комментариев xDвижу тебя в каждом разделе комментариев xD" meaning "I see you in each division of commentaries to xDvizhu you in each division of the commentaries of xD" After "xDвижу" it doesn't make much sense on any site i tried getting the translation from, and what does "xDвижу" mean ? Can you tell me why Russians use "x" and what it means too ?
My God. I have never noticed, what you hust said about grammar. But it is so true. Kids learn languages much faster, cause they just do speak after people. Thank you so much :-) I have many Russian friends. So I can practice every day.
Привет! I really appreciate the way how you are teaching Russian, because you are bringing a new Model of Education totally different from what we learn in school. I am becoming more interested in learning Russian now thanks to you 😀👍🏻
You are so adorable and have the right idea about teaching Russian. I want to leave USSA and move to Russia. Thank you so much for your lessons, what a treat to be taught by such a beautiful teacher!
Hi! I partly agree with you. I think that we shouldn't focus only on the grammar while learnign a language but it's really hard to learn it correctly when you stay away from grammar all the time. Everything depends on the level you would like to achieve. If it's ok for you to just communicate verbally, it's actually true that the grammar rules are not very important. But in case you want to get to know the language well it's just impossible to not to study grammar. I know some people who learn languages this way, just by speaking and without grammar, and their skills are not very good. I mean, yes, they communicate without problems but sometimes you can hear those unnatural mistakes they make. And they often misspell words. I don't like this way of learning a language. When I learn a language, I try to understand it, not just remember some 'usefull phrases'.
Thank you so much, Maria. I totally agree with you in terms of learning any languages. grammar just makes us more confused while speaking. I used to think, like Russian is really difficult to speak as a native speaker, and now I relised that it's because my approach is totally wrong. From now on, I'll try to work on it by watching your videos, recording my own(terrible) voice and speaking more. No grammar at all. I hope to see more videos from you. It has become my motivation to keep moving forward then. Cпасибочки)))
So, I'm watching these videos; learning, repeating, trying to pronounce correctly, and suddenly I hear her (Maria) say 'blah, blah, blah' , and I cracked up! Great video, lots of fun to watch.
I agree with you. I learned English language through cartoons and to be fair i never needed to learn the rules. Even now idont know 1 single rule about english grammar but ialways had best grades there XD
+TheCovertWolf Well I think that English is insanely easy as a language (I still may do many mistake) and it may be becaue my first language is French wich influenced English a lot and is definetively way harder than most language.
I like the Russian Language . I know more words now than when I firs started I'm just not sure what video to watch next . I tried just learning words by them self and I wasn't retaining any at least this way every once in awile certain word stick Keep up the good work. thank you.
This way of learning is the same as a baby. learning to understand first and then speaking and then reading and then writing. or just understanding and speaking. i like it. Wish me luck.
This seems to be great! I know I'm really far from reaching my goal, which is also my primary reason for starting to learn Russian, and that is being able to study mathematics from Russian books, but I think, with your help, I might eventually achieve that. Anyways, many thanks for the videos, and, should you ever wish to learn Serbian, or come to Serbia, I'll be more than glad to return you the favor.
this video really give me some thought...so damn true we spending too much time on grammar and pay less to learn on how to speak that language..now i can throw away my grammar books and start focusing on new phrases..thanks a lot for sharing..
Мария, ты молодец! Совершенно правильные советы: чтебники в макулатуру и слушать, слушать, слушать. Есть ли у тебя видео про то, что даст знание русского языка иностранцу? Если нет еще, то сделай, пожалуйста.
this is so true I took Spanish and did only conjugating and this year I took French and the teacher teaches phrases and not really grammar and it's easy and fun
I was thinking about something I heard in music school about the singer's instrument. I saw the microphone that was used in the podcast but you are in a fairly large room close to a wall. There not many soft surfaces and it is easy to hear lots of background sounds. I think that your voice is so unique in one way is because of the shape of your head. The head is a complex structure of air chambers and pathways. I love your voice whether speaking loudly or softly. :)
hats off! really i was sooo frustrated...since a year and a half i have been learning russian...and all that i have been thought till now is just grammar....grammar...but still i just cant form a single sentence by my own..its frustrating still not able to talk in russian...its true.. if we know the phrases we will be able to speak...thanks a lot really! finally Someone knows how to teach russian the right way! :) Superlike!
Grammar is the key for Beginners. One should learn at least basic grammar to be able to speak properly. System is vital once you've mastered basic grammar. Starting from Pre-Intermediate, students must do more and more listening, reading and speaking not excluding grammar though.
it's because it's bullshit, everyone has a different method to learn a language, she says that learning grammar and sticking to it is the wrong way, well, this is true, FOR MANY, not for everyone, I like learning grammar and that's what works for ME, the problem is that everyone wants to impose rules (I'm not refering to her) , when the truth is: Forget everything you've been told and do what YOU think it's gonna work for you, you know yourself better than anyone else
That is true, everyone has got his/her own way to process knowledge. The teacher's role, in any cas, will always be to figure out what's that way the student prefers learning and organize the classes based on the students preferences. I am a teacher, by the way.
+Moacir Sant´Anna So why is it, as you chose to phrase it, "bullshit" if it works for MANY people but not for you? No need to diss her opinion like that
bullshit the fact that everyone wants to impose THEIR opinion as the truth. I don't think you read what I wrote, I've already said I didn't refer to her.
I learned English through replaying Disney movies multiple times a day when I was new in the US. I learned Tagalog(i forgot it now) from living in Manila for a month for inquiries with the embassy. I learned Spanish(can't speak it now but can understand it) from a traditional classroom setting. Now I want to learn Russian.
hey, i used to study russian 10 years ago, i had been studying it for 4 years before i moved to new school and started learning English. now i have interest in russian again, and i basically understand your advice without reading the subtitle. ofcourse there are words that i dont know or i forgot the meaning, but i understand the main gist. спасибо, я буду подолжнуть "learning" русский язык. sorry if i wrote it wrong hhah
I couldn't agree more. When you think about it a newborn is immersed in the language for about 5 years before even really considering grammar. Why should it be different for adults? I believe in immersing myself as much as possible for the next year. Then I will start to add the study of grammar. Thank you for all you do!
its being 2 months i am learning Russian Grammar, and yes you are right i can read little bit i can understand little bit but speaking zero. so now i will follow your way. let see how it will go.
My grandfather told me and my brother he learnt a bit of German back in the day, as he helped in WW2 a bit but too young to fight. He said to learn grammar on the way as you learn the phrases, rather just learning just the words and grammar. :)
While i'm not sure about the grammar(yet), i know starting with the alphabet helped me a LOT. My first attempt at Russian I started with some basic phrases and from that I can still remember a few words but the problem i ran into was that unless I remembered the whole word, I had no way to sound it out. where as now when i see Привет! i know that п(p sound) + р(r sound) + вет(yet) and makes recognising it a little less about remembering. Now with that said, I still have to remember what the words mean and I can definitely see how that could be made even harder by trying to remember all of the grammar rules as well and even though I will probably start to work on phrases now I'm glad i've had a look at the grammar and know what to expect. Also, I'd like to thank you for uploading these, I'm sure over the next weeks they are going to be an invaluable resource, if it wasn't for people such as yourself I couldn't be learning such a wonderful & beautiful language. Regards, Nick.
i am learning in this way but also... russian girl teaches me words to songs (there are some excellent russian pop songs). it WORKS. we watched together some periscope videos (in russian) over and over - amusing ones. they last a long time. so what we do is learn what the conversation is about. some dude Alexander says this, then Masha says this. each time i understand a little more. the video is over 20 minutes long. people talk about a lot of different things in casual conversation. It ALSO works.
Thank You very much for all these useful tips but to your surprise I actually started learning Russian By learning single words putting em into a sentence and practicing verbs and Grarmmar and I think I am not terrible at Russian:) Though I believe Had Seen This channel before,I would've been muvh faster whilst doing so
I watched your another movie- RUSSIAN language for beginners. That is good! I can't understand this video...... would u like to add the Chinese subtitle in your movie, thank you!
Awesome! Spasibo! I believe in what you're saying, and that it's important to focus on phrases rather than on grammar and single words. So should I write what you're saying and memorise the phrases? Or where should I get phrases from? This is my only problem now: where to get phrases from :(
By the way, would you mind updating the Russian subtitles? They only go up to 0:39, and I would love to have the entire transcript to practice. Thanks!
Your comment is 3 years old but I noticed that under subtitle settings there is an auto-translate option and select Russian - the subtitles are auto-generated. I don't know if they are accurate but I thought I'd suggest it.
Estoy de acuerdo en que aprender gramatica nos quita tiempo para aprender a hablar...Gracias por tus videos, son muy buenos...Solo seria mejor si ´´algunos´´ los hablaras mas lentamente.
Thank you. You have reinforced the need for less grammar study. Great lesson. I read, write and listen. I'm only in my 3rd week of serious study and practice. I plan on doing Russian at least 1 hour per day for 3 months, then I will evaluate my progress. The main problem I have is remembering words, though I'm getting better at it. I taught myself French and italian and can communicate rather well. But those Latin languages have many cognates and echoes English. Any advice on memory beyond the obvious: repetition, repetition?
You need more listening practice. I have an audio course for the beginners with the simple audios, you can check it out on my website www.easyrussianclub.com
Maria - is there a recommended sequence of your videos for beginners? I only know the alphabet. And is there a list of essential phrases I should be using?
I love it. Excellent advice and offered in an encouraging way. You have a new fan.
Wow, this is so cool because I'd just seen your video (tips on learning Russian).
Hi Steve. In my humble opinion she speaks a lot about how we don't acquire languages but she doesn't really talk about how we go about acquiring languages.

She's clever: saying the same shit over and over to drill it into your mind. It actually works.
+Plain Pizza HAHA I thought I was the only one who noticed. I even turned away from the screen in order to not see the subtitles, and thought, "Hey, that word sounds familiar!! (the word for "again") haha.
Did you make sure you purchase her course?
Drilling things into your head isn't a good thing actually.
She is telling the truth
Alexander Davronov it helps when it comes to recognizing speech
So far your videos are much more helpful than the "Easy Russian" videos that teach you how to say "hello" and "thank you." Thanks a lot!

😍😍😍😍😍😍...thank you for the language instruction baby I’m yet again impressed how passionate you are in teaching ..I appreciate you ...
you are a brilliant teacher .I love you and your teaching
thank you.
You have an absolutely right point. Grammar is being overstated in some courses. Speaking is not only about grammar.
since you exist im really glad to learn russian and also it has improved my listening, really thanks!
I always believed in this idea when it comes to learning a new language but unfortunately i never found someone who could teach russian with the same idea.. It's nice to finally find your channel here.

I don't know if I will learn Russian by following this channel but I am sure that after a couple of videos I will definitely fall in love with this teacher :D
this really true because we all learn to speak English as children merely by being surrounded and immersed in it continuously
Clever video with well thought out repetitive sentences that allow you you hear patterns. Beautiful girl too. Well done.
my favorite video, easy to learn this way.THANK YOU Maria!
Videos and method are great. Thanks for this. Keep it up.
Damn again!! You hit the nail on the head, as this is exactly the problem I've had with my other languages, of over thinking the grammar. Your amazing!

Unimaginable explain and free advice is here
I just want to say to your videos are helping me a lot, thanks you.

I don't know if that's beer talking - but I understood nearly everything you said. Kudos, спасибо за видео.
I love Russian language and you are totally right, I did to learn English in your way, I listened from you and it s exiting.
I LOVE YOU!! Thank you for you for all your cool videos!
Оставляйте ваши комментарии! мне важно каждое мнение!
+Easy Russian How long did you learned to speak and write in Russian?
Hey Masha is this correct ? "Я вижу тебя в каждом разделе комментариев xDвижу тебя в каждом разделе комментариев xD" meaning "I see you in each division of commentaries to xDvizhu you in each division of the commentaries of xD" After "xDвижу" it doesn't make much sense on any site i tried getting the translation from, and what does "xDвижу" mean ? She is a native speaker.
+Dylan K XD is smile :)
Yes, "xD" means smile. It's a picture, not a letters.

You are so adorable and have the right idea about teaching Russian. I want to leave USSA and move to Russia. Thank you so much for your lessons, what a treat to be taught by such a beautiful teacher!
Very useful advice. I like your videos.

Talking about grammatic, with Grammatik on the background. Well played! Nice video.
I love your enthusiasm! I'm just getting started, you've got a new subscriber!

You, my dear, are the best language teacher ever. I totally agree with you about this grammar BS. Thank you.
Your videos are helping me a lot!!!!
GIRL, I LOVE THE WAY YOU TEACH
So, I'm watching these videos; learning, repeating, trying to pronounce correctly, and suddenly I hear her (Maria) say 'blah, blah, blah' , and I cracked up! Great video, lots of fun to watch.
thanks very much... i've learned alot from ur video.
I agree with you. I learned English language through cartoons and to be fair i never needed to learn the rules. Even now idont know 1 single rule about english grammar but ialways had best grades there XD
+Kristjan Prsa wow!!! =) Me too)))
You just convinced me this method works because your grammar is better than a lot of native English speakers.
+Kristjan Prsa I was native to English and I still don't know any rules, lol. English is way to complex.
If you didn't say that you weren't a native speaker of English I would have thought that you were
+TheCovertWolf Well I think that English is insanely easy as a language (I still may do many mistake) and it may be becaue my first language is French wich influenced English a lot and is definetively way harder than most language.
Very nice way to teach it.... I'm locking for grammar rules, however, I thuink is more easy to learn.. I gona start now..!
Thanks, That makes so much sense. It is just like a baby learning to speak. They don't learn grammar, they just learn by trying and talking.
I'm not even interested in learning Russian but I'm subscribing because you teach very well
I'm just watching this because it's a cool language
Your video is very enjoyable!
Yes,I agree with you.I'm studying in Bulgaria and the first year I learn the language...Also,I'm interested for russian language!!! :)
really good!! I agree with you...you could to consider the idea of be a russian teacher in the future!!
I like the Russian Language . I know more words now than when I firs started I'm just not sure what video to watch next . I tried just learning words by them self and I wasn't retaining any at least this way every once in awile certain word stick Keep up the good work. thank you.

thanks for your video greetings from Brazil
This way of learning is the same as a baby. learning to understand first and then speaking and then reading and then writing. or just understanding and speaking. i like it. Wish me luck.

this is so true I took Spanish and did only conjugating and this year I took French and the teacher teaches phrases and not really grammar and it's easy and fun
there is a very good textbook on learning Russian "Essentials of Russian" by Gronicka (spelled with a "^" over the c)

I couldn't agree more. When you think about it a newborn is immersed in the language for about 5 years before even really considering grammar. Why should it be different for adults? I believe in immersing myself as much as possible for the next year. Then I will start to add the study of grammar. Thank you for all you do!
its being 2 months i am learning Russian Grammar, and yes you are right i can read little bit i can understand little bit but speaking zero. so now i will follow your way. let see how it will go.
these rules are by AJ Hoge, yeah :) Мне очень нравилас ваш уроки. I will be watch all of u'r video lessens.
would be nice without the music as a background. plus how can a beginner making the hearing with the distraction?
You should try to record your videos in a more quite environment, but anyway...Love your videos. They`re really useful.
Privet! Your lessons seem interesting. Do you still give lessons? How much do you charge per hour? Spasibo!
This is way too difficult. Not the language but focusing.. My eyes constanly move from the captions to the goddess on my screen. Simply incredible.
Am i the only one who is more interested in her rather than the lesson. lol
Yes, I like the way you think.
Thank You very much for all these useful tips but to your surprise
I actually started learning Russian By learning single words putting em into a sentence and practicing verbs and Grarmmar and I think I am not terrible at Russian:)
Though I believe Had Seen This channel before,I would've been muvh faster whilst doing so
I watched your another movie- RUSSIAN language for beginners.
This is my only problem now: where to get phrases from :(
niiiiiice, im teaching spanish now in Ukraine, i use the same principles!
Nice! This gold and 💎🏆
Глядя на Вас, мадам, я готов учить русский язык еще раз!
Brilliant thank you
I love your videos..but why record one in such a noisy environment ?
Согласен 100%, я немецкий так в детстве учил.
Well said!
Very great from you
Maria - is there a recommended sequence of your videos for beginners? I only know the alphabet. And is there a list of essential phrases I should be using?
I definitely know how to say “grammatika” now 👌
