Thank you! I enjoy watching videos that have Depression themes. Farm families would have grown all or most of the vegetables, baked their own bread and maybe even whipped cream from their own dairy cows, but $7 for the day is still good for meals that use more store-bought items.
Hi I agree that farm families would have made or grown most of the items and the cost would be much less. Thank you so much for watching and have a good day❤️Grandma👩🏻
0000004 $2.77 for 2 potatoes? Here in the Midwest, they would have been $1 at most. With the free food you included, we think you might have cheated yourself into a higher total. Your examples of depression-era meals are spot on! Love your videos! We watch each video several times to bump your YT numbers up and because we enjoy them.
Hi the day we bought the two potatoes that was the cost. Living here on Long Island we have high prices. I am happy you love my videos. We thank you all for watching each video several times. Have a good day Love & Hugs Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
Hi Grandma and Grandpa, great to see you. Inflation is killing us. Thanks for all the work you did on this video. Now if I could only find someone to give me some fish. lol Stay well and safe.
Hi we know inflation is affecting everyone especially seniors. Cooking the Depression Era meals helps us with the cost of our grocery bills. We wish you could get some free fresh fish. So delicious and it helps us so much. Take Care and Stay Well❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
Hi grandma and grandpa. I found the farina and made it. I absolutely love it as it tastes the exact same way I remember it. My mother often made it fir us for breakfast on a school day. I will be getting it from now on. I actually forgot all about it until I saw your video on it. My Grandmother and Grandfather went through the depression. My mother was born in 1936 so she don’t remember to much. I remember my Grandmothers cooking as a kid and actually loved it and she cooked a lot from that time. Thank you both for the video and God Bless………Brian
Hi Brian always good to hear from you. We are glad you found the farina and once again you are enjoying it for breakfast. I am glad my Mom made Depression Era meals for us growing up. The meals has helped Grandpa and I with the cost of our grocery bills. Thank you for God’s blessings. Take Care and Stay Safe❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
Hi we are happy to hear we had you on the floor laughing. A day without laughter is a day wasted. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
Love it. I’m sure it took a lot of time to break down the cost per serving. One thing though, Are you sure 2 potatoes were $2.77? I believe we live in the same area and I just got 5 lbs of potatoes for $3.49 at Lidl. Two weeks ago they were $3.99 at Stop & Shop or ShopRite. Anyhow, I enjoyed the video.
Hi that was the cost the day we purchased the two potatoes. We don’t eat a lot of potatoes so I don’t buy a 5 pound bag anymore unless we are having family over. We are glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
When I was little visiting my cousins in the woods, blueberries were free because we would gather them in the woods ☺️ we would always come home with an ice cream bucket full of them, and we would put them in pancakes the next day and eat them for snacks. They’re a lot smaller but more flavorful than what you get in the store.
My grandmother had raspberries, blueberries and gooseberries in her yard and my cousin and I would help her pick them. It is such a fond memory similar to yours. You were picking the wild blueberries. I have purchased them frozen and they are more flavorful than the large ones. Grandpa likes to make blueberry muffins and pancakes. We usually have blueberries every morning. Take Care❤️Grandma👩🏻
With food prices climbing too high for someone on social security, I appreciate what you've laid out here! I do think its unfair, though, to claim your final cost being as low as it is when the protein for your main meal was free. Still, I'm glad u r on here!
Hi we are thankful that we can plant a garden every year. Also that we have a friend that supplies us with free fish. During the depression era many people also had gardens and had a relative or friend that would give them free fish. I hope these videos help many people like us who live on a fixed income. Thank you so much for watching.❤️Grandma👩🏻
hi grandma and gradpa ...well...i am your age maybe 60 but ....hi guys 😄...love the video , i remember having cream of wheat with the butter and cinnamon everyday almost ...memories
This is wonderful. I'm going to make these dishes now as they look both healthy and affordable. Could you please share how the portion size from the Great Depression era compares to today?
Hi During the Great Depression you had no fast food restaurants with oversized portions. The dishes and cups were much smaller. Everyone would have a normal portion just for one person. Today’s portions are enough to feed at least two people. Plus you did not have all the junk food in the corner grocery stores like the supermarkets have today. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I prefer garlic powder and cayenne in my cream of wheat (farina). Oatmeal gets either apple pie spice and butter, or if I'm being self indulgent peanut butter and cocoa powder.
Hi Grandma & Grandpa Your recipes remind me of growing up with my Mimma, do you ever make dump cakes? At one time they were called Resurrection cake in the south. Do you have a version of this?
Hi it has been many years since I made a dump cake. All the dump cakes i made you would use a cake mix. I now only make all my cakes from scratch so I don’t make them anymore. I have never heard of a Resurrection cake maybe because I am not from the south. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Hi since I made the video potatoes have come down in price. Thank you for sharing what the potatoes cost in NJ. Glad to hear you eat very similar❤️Grandma👩🏻

Wow!! Thanks so much Grandma and Grandpa for the research and calculations! Love it! Just so you know, I'm moving in! Lol I'll bring my $6 per day...keep the change! 😝😝😝😝🤑 Big hugs! 🥰

@@GrandmaFeral Aww thank you both!! I love your vids! Keep them coming, Grandma!! You and Grandpa have a good one too! Dont do anything I wouldnt do twice! 😝🥰😁 I agree...laughter is the best medicine! Take two and call me in the morning! 😋
It pays to have a garden or get produce from friends. Sticking with proper serving sizes also makes the food go further and no weight gain. Prices high here but whatever is on sale is what we buy. Thank you for sharing how to make ends meet!
Hello, I just came here to say that this is my favorite channel on UA-cam! I never miss a video and look forward to each one posted, especially the depression meal ones. 😊❤ Thank you and God bless you both.
Do you have a Depression Era recipe book you recommend? I know you have shared several recipes. I hope to go through your channel and write them all down one day. I'm a subscriber, but for some reason UA-cam didn't put your videos in my "feed" for quite a while. I lost track of watching you and the other day I thought, "Where did Grandma & Grandpa go....? I hope they're still alive!" 😂 I'm glad to see you are! And with another new video! Thanks! 😊
Hi thank you so much for letting me know. I don’t have any Depression Era recipe book to recommend. Most of all my recipes were from my Mom since she lived through the Great Depression Era.❤️Grandma👩🏻
Happy to see a video from you show up today! I had to smile at the popcorn. My parents are both 76 years old and popcorn is still one of their favorite go-to snacks.
It's definitely cheaper to eat at home than eating out and it's better for ya. Also a plus to have your fresh grown veggies. All your meals look good and healthy. Thank you for doing the math and showing us the prices. In 1930 even .32 cents was a lot for that era.

My father's favorite depression era meal was to melt some Velveeta cheese in a frying pan and slopped it on toast to make a sandwich and then he dunked it in a bowl of coffee
Hi Groceries are high here in America. It would cost us a lot more in groceries especially if we ate meat and a lot of snacks everyday. We live on Long Island and prices are not cheap to live in New York. We pay high taxes and utility bills are high. It is terrible that as seniors we have to watch every penny we spend to make sure we can pay all our bills. We are thankful everyday for what we have. In America alot of families are having very hard times to keep up with inflation. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I would have been out fishing every day during the depression, can't beat free food. I haven't had eggplant parm in a while so might make that soon. Looked like a good day of meals, a feast for 1930. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa.
Hi glad to hear you would have been out fishing every day during the depression. You would not have gone hungry and could have helped many people during that time. You should make eggplant parmigiana if you haven’t had it in awhile so delicious especially as a sandwich. We hope you have a nice weekend. Take Care! ❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳

Yes we live on Long Island, those prices are spot on.
