You think that's cool, you should see how an osprey does it. They are so well adapted to catching fish that evolution has turned their talons into fish hooks.
You can go to the upper Skagit river and watch this for yourself. Happens every day. You'll see 70 or 80 birds in the trees taking turns snatching fish out of the water. November best month. I lived near the Skokomish river in Union. Same activity on the lower river. But more active on the Skagit.
Grace and beauty all wrapped up in this majestic scene. I've seen only about 14 bald eagles in my life and each time the site was just jaw dropping awesome.
This bird of prey is so precise. Kind of like watching a well trained gymnast. So many things having to happen with precision one after another, never misses a beat. Breath taking.
People (licensed falconers) bird hunt using their falcons, and they DO get the birds from them, so it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. Also, one of the Far East countries has a history of using pelicans to fish. Their techniques involve a long leash around the neck of the bird and once the bird gets a fish the fisherman pulls on the role, constricting the birds ability to swallow the fish after catching it. Saw a documentary on it many years ago. Crazy to watch in action!

wow, such a cool video, it is easy, with slow motion, especially on the third one, the eagles intent, how many milliseconds are slotted for 'claws ready' , for 'snatch the prey' and then back to flight, never skipping a beat, simply amazing....
Eagles truly are incredible birds. Imagine the pinpoint accuracy needed to not only catch a fish, but a Salmon nonetheless. Salmon are incredibly fast swimmers and are hard to catch. For an eagle to not only spot the Salmon in the river and track its movement, but to also accurately scoop it out of the water is impressive as hell.
While fishing in a beautiful Oregon lake, an eagle grabbed a rainbow trout about 15 feet from my canoe. Scared the hell out of me. The eagle was mostly speckled brown, so I think it was a female, and she looked huge that close up. A once in a lifetime experience.
What a great demonstration of the excellent design of eagles. Absolutely stunning precision! Another nail in the evolution coffin. Thank you for such a great video.
