  • This is a Snowy Owl video that covers the 2022-2023 overwintering season here in southwest rural Ottawa.
I have been planning for and hoping to create this kind of Snowy Owl video for years, and especially since last October when I bought a new Canon R5 mirrorless camera for the sole purpose of doing wildlife videos. I went out to see the Snowies with my video gear almost 20 times this year in good and bad weather, not counting the dozen or so times I went before they actually settled down here for the Winter.
After having been an active Nikon DSLR shooter for 12 years it was a huge and challenging transition for me to move to a Canon mirrorless camera cold turkey. In fact, I sold my Nikon D500 soon afterwards just so I wouldn't be tempted in difficult times to fall back on familiar things (...burning the boats to preclude retreat, as it were).
In addition to learning a whole new camera brand (Canon), and a whole new camera system (mirrorless), my biggest problem was and continues to be not being able to see very well through the electronic viewfinder, especially on bright sunny days, because of a medical issue with my eyes. Thankfully, my trusty old "portable darkroom" helps a lot, which is a black min-blanket draped over my head just like landscape photographers generations ago used to use.
I have been captivated by the beauty and majesty of Snowy Owls, especially in flight, ever since first seeing one years ago in this very same location in rural Ottawa. My wife and I have had an extra large print of one hanging in our kitchen for over 10 years now, and we still love it and have no plans of replacing it.
Anyways, regarding this video, there are still many shortcomings with it as I'm just now starting to get the hang of all this. But for the most part I'm happy with it and looking forward to what's next. Hope you enjoy it.

Thank you very much for this terrific video. I teach painting and will use it to show my students prior to their tackling the Snowy Owl as a subject.

Hello Rudy, just came across your beautiful snowy owl video. I live in Ottawa and am wondering where id the best place to photography snowy owl on public land?

      Hi Joseph,
Finding Snowy Owls this year is tough because Eastern North America is having its worst Snowy Owl winter in about 20 years. There is one young female in rural south-west Ottawa just south of Kanata in the large field at the corner of Brownlee Road and Eagleson Road. She is often perched in cluster of high bare trees on the south side of Brownlee. Go to the corner of Brownlee and Eagleson and turn right onto Brownlee. Drive west for about 500 meters. Stop and look south 380 meters along that fence line and there are the trees. he is often there. There is a worn path along the left side of the fence line where we all walk, so far with the approval of the owner, but DO NOT walk on the right side (east side) of the fence line. We are not permitted on that land.
Here is a photo I got of her a few days ago at around 4:00 pm. www.flickr.com/photos/rmp2020/53498727018/in/dateposted/
      Good luck,
      Rudy

@@Rudy.Pohl.Ottawa Rudy, Thank you so very much for sharing the information. I live in Kanata North and I have seen Snowy around ten year ago, but not anymore since the forest was levelled for land development. I shall try my luck with your feedback.

      Dobrý deň Mária,
ďakujem za tvoj úžasný komentár. Áno, sovy sú naozaj krásny dar od Boha. Strávim veľa hodín v lese tichom s Bohom a sovami, keď ich nájdem. Som veľmi rád, že vás moje video požehnalo.
      Boh ti žehnaj.

Where should I look this winter?😂
I live in Dunrobin and had a female Barred owl stay on my property all winter! It's a forested /pond / marsh ecosystem here all around me, so not a Snowy place...
I heard something about somewhere near Stittsville? But where else?

Hey there JW. No problem, I'll get you plugged in, my buddies and I have been at this for about 13 years in the west Ottawa area.
Tell, do you have an eBird account? If not you should get one because by doing quick searches on eBird you can see all the latest spotting info of not only Snowy Owls but most other Owls and cool birds in the area.
Let me know if you need any help with setting up. Feel free to email me at rudypohl@gmail.com
      Cheers,
      Rudy
