    Im way behind commenting for your video but finally this popped up in my searches. I wanted to just make a simple roll down knapsack but all showing out their too complicated. I have already been making other bags in this concept and make my own jean bags more complicated but I just couldnt picture it. Its the sewn side seams on the outside I needed to see. I will just make it more rectangular and taller. I will add an inset outside pocket too. And backpack straps! Thanks. Simple is better at times!

    oh just adding for you or anyone. If you want a more finished top edge but with canvas and some jeans I use its too stiff. I just bind it with other fabric. Tshirt material or mens shirts. You can sew it to the front or back of bag. I then fold OVER the top seam allowance. Fold under the 2nd raw edge then you can hand stitch or top stitch around. Or do stitch in the ditch. Just an idea. I mostly do all my bindings folding over the seam allowance even for clothing. Reduced bulk rather than folding AT the seam. And especially for cuffs on a sleeve if you fold them up you have a nice little hem on the under side. Thanks again.

    You could put a binding around the top or double the fold and then sew. It prevents fraying.

    Great video for actually figuring out the body and shape of this bag in terms of geometry. Also, the leather is a very attractive touch! Thanks :)
    But sewing technique is a bit lacking. No pressed seams, no seam finish, tensions need adjustment? Also, it seems you don't bother to reverse stitch at the beginning or end of your seam, allowing thread to easily pull out.
    Adding the seam pressing step will make this whole thing a lot easier, and the shape will naturally follow once you do it :)
    With canvas, I'd definitely recommend a simple seam finish. Something like leather or felt doesn't need this, but canvas has a looser weave that massively benefits in terms of durability from a simple seam finish. Set your machine to a zig zag pattern and re-sew your seams with one side of the zig zag just off the edge of the fabric, and the other side of the zig zag just outside the initial seam.
    Happy crafting!

    Nice bag like all you’re projects so far I just got into sewing looking for a good walking foot sewing machine for a reasonable price right now got a Singer 4432 I believe does the trick but would like to move up and perhaps see leather anyhow perhaps if you have some input I was thinking of the Juki or Juke machine?

    we had an industrial machine but had to get rid of it for lack of space. Nobody wanted it at our yard sales, so it was donated to Goodwill. Wish I would have had more space. They last forever. None of our expensive machines can compare for workhorse type sewing

    I'm a beginner, learning how to sew .What size of needle do I need to use for sewing canvas and doubled up seams, If that's what you call it.I'm trying to make a Bivvy out of canvas instead of buying it. Was thinking of doing it by hand since I have no sewing machine using a speedy stitcher.Anything than can help me, would be much appreciated. Great video learned some techniques , thanks .

      Follow this link to a thread and needle size chart tolindsewmach.com/thread-chart.html . I think a thread size of tex 70 or larger should do the trick. Have fun.

    I loved it! It looks easy to make and is a great tip to use clips instead of pins (I'm just learning to use the sewing machine). What did you use to cut the fabric at the beginning?

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  8 років тому +2

      +jillimi It is a rotary cutter and self healing mat. You can get a kit that also includes the straight edge. You won't be sorry you spent the money, it is worth it.

    i like to make reproduction klein electrician bags the kind home depot sells as a five pack in different colors and i like to line them and i must say u are an incredibly brave man for going this route. why not just quilt or outer sew the inner and outer patterns as one piece then sew the bag as normal?

      Alexander Dyer - yes and please understand my original post was not criticism, just that if that was the only way to line stuff i would probably be forced to kill myself. check out box staples they make very nice flat "hogring" style re-inforcements and they have a nice copper color to boot. have you ever used an old school singer button holer?

      It is all good, I enjoy your input. Tell me more about box staples, I don't know what you mean.
      I have tried newer versions a little, but with no luck. I'm spoiled and didn't stick with it very long since I have this baby for button holes ua-cam.com/video/xFivtV5rMIs/v-deo.html

    • @michael-dm2bv
      @michael-dm2bv 6 років тому

      Alexander Dyer - box staples are those copper colored staples you can find keeping boxes together. when you get them new they look like desk staples except they are big. if i need to reinforce a seem or bridge a seem to reinforce it i punch it through and turn the sharp edges in a little then hammer it down essentiall like a paper staple. for example i made a "butt" seem on a canvas/rubber bucket instead of an overlapping seem and by the time i was done i realized it was a weak point so i bridged the gap of the seam to reinforce it. it works just as good as a rivet. it looks very steampunk like metal sutures.
