How do Serbians Survive on their Tiny Salaries?

- I wanted to show the costs of a quick trip to the supermarket here in Serbia. I am a single guy that doesn't eat very healthy and it costs me a lot of money. Many of these Serbs that live outside of Belgrade are living on less than $400-500 a month. I don't see where they come up with enough money to even survive. I guess only God knows.

That's why you don't buy everything at a supermarket. You buy meat at the butcher's place (mesara), you buy vegetables at the vegetables market. Things are cheaper there.
Depends. I live in Canada and things are a lot cheaper at the supermarket than local stores.
+i am your worst nightmare Yes, but he is talking about Serbia. No one mentioned Canada. Sorry if im sassy i blame pms lol
I went to a market in the Czech Republic and everything was so cheap compared to in the stores. Eggs were 100 crowns and in the market the same amount was 50 crowns.
@@blehbleh8915 we are talking about serbia u dumb
Let me tell you a joke, American, Brit and Serb are discussing about their paychecks, American says: " I make about 3000 dollars, a month, i spend around 2000 dollars, and i dont know where's the rest! Brit says: " I make about 2500 pounds a month, i too spend around 2000 pounds a month, but where are those 500 pounds i dont know! And then the Serb says: " Well guys, i make about 200 euros a month i spend around 300, where do i find those extra 100, i dont know!"
Its funny, but its also sad at the same time.
Nikola Jovanovic lol nice one
Not even god knows how we survive. I'ts magic. XD
+milan zaric haha.. i think so
+Charles Cather I eat 60$ worth of food in a month lol and i'm not bothered by that since i don't want to be fat, but bill for heating was 80$ and 45$ for electricity for december, fuck that ;) Internet is 14$ per month, but alteast now it's fiber 35mbps internet
+Charles Cather There's a nice joke, black humour you might call it, that we use to describe our situation...
A Serb, a German and Frenchy talk about their bills, livelyhood...
Frenchy says, I earn 1500€, I spend 700€ on rent, 300€ on bills and car gas, same on food, and where does the rest go I don't know, can't save anything!!
German says I earn 2000€, I give half on rent, 400€ on bills and car gas, 300€ on food, and where does the rest go I don't know, can't save anything!!
Then a Serb says my salary is 250€, a 100€ goes on rent, 200€ goes on bills and car gas, 300€ goes on food, and I save 50€ a month for a summer holidays in Greece, and where does all that money come from I HAVE NO IDEA!! :)
And no, Serbs aren't crooks, we have some help from our elders who live a spartan lifestyle to afford that help, most of us works a job on the side, minor trades via clasifieds...
+Zoran Ilić Im sorry, but Frenchy? French people you just call French. Oh and good joke btw. Im from Serbia lol
Zoran +1 :))
Go to "pijaca" for fresh and chaper vegetables and go to the butchers for meat, your diet is very unhealthy.
Bravo for comment!
its sad ppls are on low salaries, but the food is even more expences in Pakistan and in Pakistan, the ppls are on even low salaries, anyway, big hi to all in Serbia,i love Serbia, being a muslim
+Mohammed Ali hello Mohammed.. nice to meet you! Which city are you from? I have a lot friends from Lahore, Karachi and a little village called Tank :)
Charles Cather Hello Charles, great to meet you too btother.i seen most of your vidios and I love them,i am from kotli azad Kashmir, pakistan.
+Mohammed Ali oh wow! i have a buddy from a little place in Kashmir too! He just found a job in Dubai! Very pleased to hear from you! I appreciate all the support. :) Hope I bump into you someday :)
+Mohammed Ali Hello Mohammed, greetings from Serbia, I just wanted to tell you that Serbians do not hate Muslims, we just get a bad press ... of course there are racist jerks here, but most of Serbs are really friendly.
Ziwco Nawalean yes brother I know Serbia and both my home country Pakistan get really bed press...Greeting to you too...
We are better than Bear Grylls he wouldnt survive here maybe he can in Amazon but in Serbia he wouldnt last one day :D
At 2:20 you when you take that shot, you look like an everyday stressed-out Serbian man getting ready to go trough the bills
Charles, marry a Serbian women; cooking problems solved..
+3crusade Total truth, grocery shopping is expensive. When you pick the girl make sure her parents have a farm. That way all the food will come for free.
There is a joke that is actuallly true.There is American guy,a German guy,and Serbian guy.American guy says I make 1000$ I spend 500$ and 500$ goes to my pocket.German guy says I make 1000euro I spend 500euro and 500euro goes to my pocket.Serbian guy says I make 1000dinars I spend 1500dinars. :D Don't even ask man... :D
The joke actually doesnt go like that, but if you tell it the right way its funny.
100% true
In Nis i have worked at a few places and the salary was always 20 000 din. which as you know is nothing, and after I pay my college stuff which is about 10 000 and my bills I am left with nothing.. The only answer here is to just finish school and get out of this country.
:( :( I know that things are rough down there... strasno! :(
And here us Serbian kids are in Australia, we hate it here the cost of life is unbelieveable and it's so different to home... all I want to do is finish uni and go back home where my heart belongs..
Tee Love same, only difference is I live in London.. uni feels almost like waiting for the flight back and the whole purpose of it is to find a good job at home one day hopefully. Why would I live in a country I can not be happy in?
Tee Love I live in America ATM. Hate this place, hate the people. Don't come here. I wish we were like our cousins and moved to Canada, not America.
BalkanTech Been in Canada since 2000. Can't wait to finish school here and move back home. this place has money but its soul is empty..
I love how you always have a drink, your awesome dude!
haha.. ja sam seljak.. :)
Charles Cather lol
Man, you really need a hug!
:*
Pure magic, that's how we survive Charles☺
hahaa.. i guess
Electricity is more expensive in Serbia than in Austria brother.
As well as heating for the season.
We help each other, it's all about family.
This is how we do it.
If you lose your parents early may God help you...
Experienced personally, thats why I moved and I live in Austria.
Its just not fair...everyone deserve a normal life.
Serbians are good people.
Why is there so much criminal activities in Serbian people?
Well, feed your family and and educate your children with 300 euro per month, with 500 euro outcome per month... 500 euro outcome if everything is ok with your car, house, and with your health...
Thank God that most of your people own their homes.. How would you do it if you had a house payment? I have central heating and my bills before I even use anything are 7600 dinars! -_- That is a lot for a country with a tiny salary.. Very sad situation!!!
Charles Cather Home utilites is about 7600 with electrical and central heat, plus payment for apartment 8000din a salary is 20 000 din and how we survive in this country ???
+nikola mitrovic
Yeah, and we're told greeks have it tough !!
When we go shopping we spend about 11k dinars on food and ingdedients for baked stuff and drinks those lasts us about half a month(or more).. We go sopping every month. In the family only dad has a job and thank god he has a good paying job! The wrest of the month we live on potatoes, pigs meat and pašteta(I have no idea of what you call it in english, its meat that you spread). We buy 10 kilos of potatoes witch lasts us about 20 days :D It's hard, but we can live with it :)
You do a great job surviving on it. Thank you for your explanation... What city do you live in?
Charles Cather
I live in Subotica! :D
R4MP4G3RXD [Rampiii] i love your city!
Charles Cather
:) thanks what is your favorite ting about Subotica?
R4MP4G3RXD [Rampiii] i really loved the architecture! it was stunning!! that huge building that the McDonalds is in is absolutely AMAZING!
bread will last you 2 days? To a normal Serbs one bread lasts 1 meal.
***** one bread lasts 2 meals for me. With Pašteta, much less aahaha
***** :D
+TheTeslaEffect11
1 Day, 1 bread indeed!
You are So True dear Friend!
I Pray..
Love you Serbia..
I really hope that the people in Serbia can have some good luck on their side now, they sure deserve a break, here is for a stable future for Serbia so its economy can grow and its people with it. Prosper with pride all people of Serbia. :3
great words, my friend... :)
Hey Charles, just stumbled upon your videos whilst searching for some Serbian music to listen to with my buddies here (tip: Serb music goes very well with alcohol). It's extremely refreshing to hear some good opinions about our country and culture from a foreigner's point of view. You definitely earned yourself a subscriber here, keep up the good work dude! - Mitch (Milan)
Well done bro, keep it up! :)
Love how you announce you are not in a good mood, and down a shot. Zivoli!
We don't purchase everything in supermarkets. If you want to buy meat you go to butcher shops, and for vegetables there are farmer's markets. It's cheaper that way. And, when buying vegetables, you get different prices depending on the time of the year.
I will cook for you :). I like your videos. Nice video about my hometown Subotica even though I don't live in Serbia anymore.
Sounds great! Drugi put :)
Hvala for the nice video again Charles, I dont think the grocery overthere is cheap compair with salaris its expensive :( It is funny to see this could be my stuff wich i love and buy too, hahaha Anyway you would love my Cheese city Alkmaar :) Poljubac, and greetz, Petra
I work at a grocery store in kansas city, and for 1lb of hamburger (not on sale) its at least $4/lb. On sale if youre lucky u can get it for $2.99/lb. Mayo is now $3.99 to $4.99, bread is still cheap, broccoli is around $2/head, pasta is cheap at $1/small box, and sauce is anywhere from 1.50 to $5 a jar. So things have definitely gone up here!
wow.. thank you for the updated info.... i thought that the prices of meat were expensive here.. :O thanks again
...
only good Rakija can save Serbia
Dusan Bogosavljevic ahaha :)
An average Serbian = An extraodrinary magician B-)
in macedonia we earn 200euros and we spend 400 god knows how is that possible :D
***** ahaha. :) how is the economy there?
good for politicians and criminals, bad for us..nothing different from serbia, bosnia, and other balkan countries.....

you can always always always dice some veggies together with potatoes, trow it in a big bowl with a bit of oil and vegeta, lots of salt :) mix it and then ram it al in the oven for like 30-40 minutes...onions,lots of garlic, peper, anything you like,it's awesome :)
Hey man great videos, try shopping around local markets and I guess maybe learn some simple meals. That way you can get better food for cheaper and also help out the local farmers. Btw if you like cheese make sure to visit Pirot.
Jerry Smits omg.. i spoke at a school in Pirot and they gave me this HUGE piece of Pirot cheese.. AWESOME stuff.. :)
Hahahaha, you said diners unintentionally at 5:42 :D and after that too lol
BTW, buy meat in 'Mesara' from now on.
I would love to see that last video :D
i have never been to a mesara... i will have to check it out... what video? the rakija one? :O ahhaha..
yeah, the rakija one :)
hey I am polish nice to meet you

Yikes it's expensive here!!
I live in switzerland and it's less expensive here O_O
you pay double in Canada but you make 4 times or more money than we do here in Serbia :D
djordje petrovic 4 times? more like 10 times :)
even worse :D
Yeah, thats like the same price as it is here in the US.
you are starting to act serbian lol i watched some of your first videos. Your body language appears much more serbian now!
how so? scratching my balls and flipping off the camera? ahahhahaa.. joke.. :P
The moment you found the noodles to be opened lol. I thought I was watching my father. The wave of the hands when you said jebote. I saw some serbian anger!! Anyways love the videos! Keep them coming!
haahahah.. :) thanks ... tell your dad "zdravo" :)
I have to tell you that there is place where you can get cooked meals, you just have to find "KMN" market in Belgrade (if they have one) :) I live in Čačak, and we have that here, but i dont know is it that good food or not :D
Well, a family of four in south-east Serbia wouldn't usually spend $40 on food for just one day (unless they have some celebration.. a birthday... or a Patron Saint's Day... or some other celebration... or if they have some guests visiting and they want to be good hosts).
In this video you say that you'll make maybe about 3 burgers from 500 grams of meat (that's more than one pound of meat) and that you are probably going to eat 2 burgers that night or even 3... one person in south-east Serbia wouldn't usually eat that much meat for just one meal, unless he/she earns a lot... some would make 4 or 5 burgers from 500 grams of meat and have maybe only one burger per meal with like a half of loaf of bread... or they would maybe mix that meat with a lot of onions and soybeans and an egg and make even more than 5 burgers from it.
People from south-east Serbia usually eat a lot of bread... even with dishes that are mostly made from rice (like pilav) or potatoes (like musaka)... some would even eat bread with french-fries... some would even eat just bread and mayo (Rokeri s Moravu even have a song called "Milka" about a woman called Milka that eats mayo and bread)... some would even eat just bread and soup for a meal.
When people in Serbia have guests, they usually want to be good hosts and then they would often make a better meal than they would usually eat when they don't have guests. They usually wouldn't give a guest to eat just mayo and bread or just soup and bread... they would often order some barbecue and make a pie too for guests and they would usually also make meze (appetizers for guests to eat before the main meal) and things like that, but that doesn't mean that they could afford to eat like that for every meal.
If I see you in the street I will shake your hand. You're an incredible person.
Charles........ I WANT TO SEE THAT LAST RAKIJA REVIEW VIDEO YOU MADE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please Charles I/we neeeeed this !
Pozdrav
We don't have small salaries, you have big ones ;)
Charlie
What do you spend a month to live man?
I bet its barely $2000
Are these figures take into account rent/ utility bills etc?
I wonder how many other Serbians do what my uncle does and wait past midnight to use the best electricity - CHEAP electricity... or is that only in Belgrade?
ahaha.. some of my friends told me that their mom always runs the washing machine after 12.. :)
man thank you for eveything.AND ALSO FOR KRUPANJ.You are a great man.My mum and dad are from Krupanj and once again...thanks......
in the matter of survival, it's easier. Bread is not eaten because it's cheap. It is part of the culture. But for a family, you can make chorba. With little ingredients you can have food for couple of days.
but I bet there is a reason that it turned into such a staple of the Serbian diet..
+Charles Cather
I think it's true that we eat bread because it's cheap, i mean we're probably the only country that eats the whole bread a day per person. The thought process of my breakfast when i'm in school consists of me thinking what is the most economical thing to buy, i want to fit the most calories in my 130dinara breakfast.
No wonder our country is filled with fast food places, there's like 10 only around my school in one of the smaller towns in Serbia.
Hello Charles.
Im a serbian born in slovenia.
Here people work for 580 eur a month or even less and the stuff you bought would cost around 15 eur.
Im lucky we have our own family business, but i can tell that its hard for a lot of people here.
Pozdrav
i wondered what the average salary was over there.. :) thank you for your input!
The concept of dehydrated food going stale makes me laugh
Thank you for taking your time to show the world the truth about living in Serbia. So now just imagine how people live in Bosnia (Republic of Srpska and Federation) because we are much poorer than Serbia.
UD BL nema na cemu... i loved my days in Bijeljina.. i heard that it was poorer.. :( all the best to ya
Razalosti me covece. Hajde drzite se.
A lot of ppl living in the cities have relatives in the villages so they go there ti get some food from them or they eat very little so they can pay their bills???
Average Wage in Serbia in June was 44,184 dinar (517$) per month and the Average wage per hour for the same period in the States was 10.28$ per hour, and the average worker in the States clocks in 34 hours per week. That is about 1500$ per month. The retail prices are pretty much the same.
thanks for the info... i know very few families outside of Belgrade that don't even make that much.. :O
but that in states are Bruto not Neto sallary
After serbs pay for all the bills they get each month, they are left with around two thirds of the average wage. after they also pay taxes.
The main trick is that in Serbia both parents work and for most part there is an equal pay for women. That means with below average pay you have 600€ per month, which is today $680.
We all have one uncle who works in Germany or Canada so we got everything we need! :D
Super Xero hahaah... i've heard a few people say that to me :)
Stay in Germany
Charles Cather My grendpa have sister in Canada.
Darude ! Sandstorm is that you ??
Super Xero not all. .. pricaj u svoje ime
finnaly somebody who understand what are we surviving svaka cast
You need to divide your products to stores, butcher stores and pijaca. For fegetables, fruits, egs, and that kind of stuff you need to go to the pijaca. Its cheaper and also is much better products. For meat ofc you go to the butcher stores, and for everything else you go to the regular stores (and you need to choose some cheaper one,not Maxi...Maxi is ok when they have some sales action).
That's because in Serbia things aren't produced nearly as cheaply as they are in America. I'm 99% sure they don't have GMO's, or many of them, and you said yourself the cheese was made by the villagers, so it's bound to be expensive.
Central Serbia reporting in :) City of Kraljevo to be more precise (Kraljevo means "Kingstown" in English).
Anyway, in my part of Serbia people are mostly used to grow their own food, even if they live in the city. Almost everyone has a bit of land outside the city... not much, just a couple of ares (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hectare#Are) and they grow vegetables there (mostly organic). It's not uncommon to have a small house or weekend residence outside the city where you can stay for a couple of days when there's work to be done in the garden.
Since families are tight around here, it's not uncommon to have some relatives who live outside the city and have orchards, chickens, cows or pigs and share with their family who lives in the city. You'd be amazed what 2-3 cows, 2-3 pigs, 30-ish chickens and 10 ares of organic vegetable garden can provide for a family :)
However, there's a large number of people, especially in bigger cities, who don't have any land or family outside the city. If they don't have a decent paying job, which is usually the case, their life can be pretty hard. Honestly speaking, I don't know how they manage to survive either.
Well how are you managing ?
I am really surprised that the salaries are so low in Serbia. I am from Slovakia and people are always grumbling about salaries. Actually as I can see it is not that bad. Net minimal wage is approx. €340, plus every employee gets so-called lunch vouchers in the minimal value of €3.15 per day of work. When we take this fact into consideration, the minimal wage is around €400. National average wage is €850. But it really varies from region to region. In the capital (Bratislava) it is about €1000, on the other hand in regions just about €600-700. Besides that I suppose that the price level of groceries is almost the same as in Serbia. I checked out the prices on the Tesco´s web page today:
A loaf of cheapest bread - €0.55 (68din)
Minced meat 0.5kg - €1.99 (246din)
Mayonnaise 250g - €0.75 (86din)
Local cheese 200g (maybe that one you had is similar to Slovak Bryndza - sheep cheese) - €1.50 (185din)
Pasta 0.5kg - €0.35 (43din)
Broccoli 0.5kg - €1.19 (158din) - it is much cheaper in summer
Spicy sauce 400g - €1.49 (184din)
------------------------------------------------------
= €7.82 (969din) (1€=124din)
To be honest, I was living with parents sister and grandma, and we had more than enogh money. My dad's sallary was 600 and my mom's 350 + grandma around 200.
well, I would answer your question how I survive: I do not eat much, only two meals per day (and not a large meals) and I know where I can buy cheap fast food, sometimes I spend between 50 and 100 dinars for lunch, which is some cheap sandwich or something from bakery. of course, members of our government and parliament have largest salaries and they also can buy cheapest food in restorans in government and parliament buildings (where access is not allowed to citizens).
maxi is nice for brand products. But for healthy nice food, go visit your local pijaca or just eat in restaurants :)
I spend about 50-80 Euros on food for one month.. and my husband and I eat healthy.
Charles, Sjenički is mostly used for gibanica, burek etc. It's quite salty. I personally dont like it (too salty). You can buy kore (its around 60 din) and mix 2 eggs with 100gr of sjenički. Roll it with kore, and put 20 min on 200 into the oven and you have pita sa sirom :D
wow.. i didn't know that.. :) thank you
Charles Cather and that pie costs about 150 dinars, and it can last for one person two meals. See how cooking save money :)
I have a lot of family in Serbia. they don't live in the village anymore after the war. but they have a small garden and they have chickens. a lot of Serbs are self-sufficient people. the city life is way more expensive than Suburban life. its still hard to live in Serbia anywhere but cities like Novi sad or Belgrade is way harder.
Great video
thank you, dear.. :*
that bread will last you two day? i eat a loaf of bread (600g) each meal lol
me to
Actually the average wage in Serbia is over 400 Euro, 436 to be precise. In Belgrade it's probably over 500. Here's a map of Europe displaying each country's average salary. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_average_wage
As you could see the whole of eastern Europe is lagging behind the western countries :(
Wish i could find words to stress how hard it is sometimes here...There were few years where me and my mom were living like shit, without electricity and whatever food we could make, luckily we had an apartment. There still comes a time where we can't pay our bills in time and we end up without electricity/internet and stuff, which is terrible when it happens... not only 'cause you have to live without it but because you have to pay bonus money for them to turn it on.
Long story short, the country is shit.
My mom works 12hours a day and makes about 350$ we can't save up for clothes and shoes, it's sad but it is what it is, right?
My parents get paid extremely low wage and at this point I don't even know how we are somehow able to get food and electricity.
Charles im sorry to say but ... Now i may be wrong .. but those guys at maxi dont really sell always the products they put on the tag. I know from personal experience a guy told me who work in maxi here in Smederevo that they dont really sell sjenicki cheese but they put other chees in . However if you really like to try real sjenicki sir go to Novi Pazar or Sjenica and buy it from people who make it there :D Like i said this isnt the case in all stores but in mostly it is.
That thing that has 'Ajvar' written on it is all but.... If you want anything even remotely resembling actual Ajvar you have to muster up 400 to 600 din (i.e. Bakina Tajna) at the grocery store or buy one at the black market (aka pijaca). Good Ajvar is about US $5, that jar you took out of the bag looks more like $1.5. How they manage to fill it, pack it, distribute and sell it for that money (and profit) is something that boggles my mind.
I think those prices are on par with the prices here in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Later today or tomorrow I will go to the grocery store and buy or at least check the price of similar products...
great... please do..... most of the prices here in Serbia are similar to those back in Illinois.... the unfair part of all that is that the average salary in my state is around $2000-3000 a month not 200-300... :O
Charles Cather
is possible to live in Belgrade speaking *_only_* English ?
Драган Чикић
i hope so !!! Belgrade looks like fun !!!
the thing is that they also want vacation in greece. cars of 4-5 people split the cost and they live off with a greek snack that costs 2 euros. take into account that greece is more expensive due to the euro. crazy
3:31 Jebote bre ! AAAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The price is the same or higher as in Belgium.
listen, we do not eat pljeskavica every day, you can find really good and cheap food. When you buy ketchup or mayo you dont buy or eat it every day , And ajvar is one of the expensive items too that stands 10 days or more , so you need to calculate again
Charles, we are waiting for the rakiya vids :D
;) i will upload them soon.. :D
Brother Charles, maybe it's a good idea for you to go to shopping with someone who have small budget ;) and also - leanr to cook mate, it isn't a big deal.. considering rakija - it is probably because you have some with a lot of sugar added in fruits, before it is made.. otherwise, you wouldn't have that kind of problems.. (just kidding).. friend, if you need some, really clean, please, just say so and we will arrange something! :)
Milan Pametnjakovic great points, my man... i do need to do that.. :)
Btw, I could make a dinner for 10 people with that stuff you got there. Just add me a little oil, a kilo of flour, a kilo of potatoes and a baggie of dry yeast.
Ajvar cost like 5.50 dollars in Sweden, bread 3.20 dollars cheese....8++ dollars don't bitch around with the prices XD
I visited Serbia (becej and novi sad) 2009 and i lived like a king, everything was so cheap.
"Notice i'm not saying DYE-NERS because you guys bitch and moan"
Killing me.
hahaha.. :)
When you compare salaries in Serbia to salaries in other country's like America, there is a huge difference. In Serbia, everything costs more than in most country's, if not in every country. We spend a lot more money than we earn in a month. You have to work something else beside your daily job to be able to survive here. It's hard, yeah, and it's sad that it's going to be like this for a long time, especially if we enter EU. We already have prices high as in EU, but with a lot lower salaries. Anyway, i hope one day we will be able to live better, atleast a bit better. I think we deserve that. Anyway, i don't wanna shit about this anymore. :D Greetings from Ruma (city about 36-37 km from Novi Sad, and around 63-64 km from Belgrade), Charlie. :)
This is partly true don't forget that in a family of four, two are working (mom and dad :D ) plus their parents are helping them with food or money, and a lot of children get a summer job like picking apples :D Cheers to you :)
The "cheap generic /brand stuff" in serbia, probably trumps western expensive/named brand stuff . sourced locally folks.
Charles what fruit and vegetables are in season over in Serbia. Eat fresh fruit like cherries and you can't go wrong.
yeah.. i need to start doing that...
try to find skopski sir (Skopje capitol of Macedonia) it is far more saltier than sjenicki, and not so tart. It resembles some "feta" cheeses produced in Serbia, but it is drier and salty as hell.
yea but charles most serbs who are on a budget use markets and make a lot of there own food thay are not going in exspensive supermarkets markets are the way in serbia
good point...
Every time when there is something going on at Usce field,
bus directions are changed for lines 15,84 etc..remember that ;)
thanks for the warning, my brotha..
I'm serbian and i am not complaining. My family of 4 earns 1500$ a month and we are living happily
+Kompjuter Fantom Wow, the 4 of you have exactly 375 per month. Maybe if you tried living SEPARATELY and just maybe then you would realize how low that amount is.
But i guess that people like you do not want to strive for better. it's just easier to live with your parents who bring the bulk of the money instead of going out and getting it for yourself.
+Zodd87 Ahem my father earns a 1000$ a month and my mother 500-600$
+Kompjuter Fantom also, me and my bro are too young for a job
and emagine that u dont have your house and u have to pay rent... and there are many situations where only 1 parent is working... so it can always be worse...
You need Serbian wife ASAP , to cook of course ;)
You buying in wrong places, market ( pijaca ) is cheaper, cheese, eggs, vegetable, fruits, meat in butcher shop. All natural and from farms, unfortunately many things is imported from who know where, 3rd world places. But you need to find your farmer :)
Go away from Idea,Roda,Merkator... . Aman etc.
+Fox Mulder Women are not born to cook or clean. Men can do that too, so how about he becomes capable of feeding himself?

Of course, they're made for making babes. Obviously you did not get the joke, the patron of women's rights.
Well...the bulk of your monthly earning is going on food, the rest is for bills (including rent) and you are left with a VERY small amount of pocket money, so if u want shoes u'll have to wait a few months to accumulate enough, basically you have enough to survive, to exist but not enough to invest in improving your life style in any meaningful way.
BTW 500g of minced meat can last you 2-3 days if u make "spaghetti bolognese" for example, and always supplement your died with veggies.
You should buy bread from the bakery, not from the supermarket.
Cheese you buy at farmer’s market (pijaca), as well as fresh veggies and fruits.
Mostly, only condiments and yogurt/milk should come from supermarkets.
You should buy meat at specialized meat stores (kasapnica) or butcher’s store. It is fresh there.
You need onion and garlic for pljeskavica. Learn how to make cheese pie (simple) and one pan will last you at least 3 days.
No, we dont eat sarma very often.
Cooking is simple, it just takes some time...but it is not healthy for you to try to survive on supermarket food and grill only.
Dont go to supermarkets, its more expensive all around, you can go to butchers, vegetable market, stuff is cheaper there, when i go with my family for shopping,i spend around 13,14 bucks and we buy stuff that can last us for 3-4 days, family of 4,its cheaper and the products are better, anyways,i hope you're enjoying serbia, best regards from Backa Palanka :)
Like others have said, by going to the supermarket your paying the highest price. Go to the farmers market. Get connections or go to the sello once a month and get chesse and meat and BOOM your set. Oh, and while in the sello dont forget the silvo . :0
thanks for your insight on the subject at hand.. :) i should start shopping at those outdoor markets, but I feel stupid going in there without speaking Serbian....
Just go.
I don't even know how to slice bread
Now, remember those days how you are was welcomed, how many times you get free drinks and food from people you just met. Maybe now you will better understand the spirit of Serbia
i totally understand the spirit of Serbia... it has caused me to be more welcoming and generous at my own home.. :)
You don't buy meat and vegetables from supermarkets. You buy vegetables from bazaars and meat(except chicken) from butchers. It's cheaper that way.
+Dedokire yeah... i need to, but big markets are easier to get in and get out of
