- EXCITING UPDATE for the 1990 Honda Civic Si EF Hatch project! In my last video, I did a leakdown on the stock D16 and discovered my rings were bad which left me with the decision: Rebuild the D16 or swap in a B series! Join me as I show you the $500 B16 I picked up, why I think this engine is a perfect match for this chassis, and learn about the history and development of this engine!

The B series is such a simple and straightforward swap. Way to stay old school. I’d love to find such a clean hatch.
I wasn't really looking but when I saw this car for sale a few years ago, I jumped on it! Check out the intro video if you haven't seen it, that was the day after I brought it home.
@@addvancedgarage oh I saw it. I was one of the ones suggesting a k swap. Lol.
Love both channels man.
@@boneheadfish7893 Oh yeah, I remember that. Ks are cool too... if it was a DX or something more modified I'd be more inclined for a K.
My EF is just as much fun as my 951. I love this channel and your new build. I am having the same problem. Keep the videos coming.
I still cant believe you got a B series for $500. I would make that swap in a heartbeat!
I will admit it's more fun than my 911; honestly that car scares me with the snap oversteer
That is amazing. I have a 91 4 speed manual I love it.
That’s a steal of a deal!
SO EXCITE
So glad you got a B16! It's the perfect swap for that chassis!
Love the civic videos. Inspirational , now that I’m enjoying my new 1990 civic hatchback!
Right on! Can't wait for the salt to be gone to get mine out!
Awesome! 🤞
Looking like a proper OE+ build now
I thought a lot about long term resale value since this car is so unmodified but... I mean... if you want one of these cars, wouldn't you rather have a nice B series in it than the stock one? Plus I have over 150k miles, so .... I don't care anymore. haha. :D
@@addvancedgarage I actually just looked on FleaBay for one. Only one is $6k! Looks like a 30+year old car, really junky. Yours is in very good to great condition.
Such a good deal on the b16
Screamin! I'm having the head rebuilt as we speak. Can't wait to get it in the EF!
Sounds like a Holton St. special
lol, yeah I used to live in Riverwest.
Very good!! B series are so expensive these days so thats a good pick up. Is it obd1? looks like the Transmission is Hydraulic.
It's crazy how much they went up in price over the past few years, which is why I thought I'd never find one. Yeah, it's from a 99 Si, HOPEFULLY the trans is an Si trans but there's no vin plate, so I might have to pull it to count teeth.
Points for ASP
Because of the implication?
Nice find! My concern is finding a b16, swapping it, and only to find out the internals are shot. Any precautions I can take before making such a purchase? Thanks
Watch the next video in this series, it shows you how to do a leakdown. This is something you can do on an engine uninstalled/out of the car, without a transmission or starter, and gives you way more information than a compression tester.
link for the video clip @5:42
If you've come this far, just a little bit farther with a modest turbo and you can have a 500 horsepower daily driver.
Nah, rather have it slower and be able to wring it out on the regular
@@addvancedgarage yep if I do a B16 swap in my 91 dx hatch its staying naturally aspirated, less headaches without the turbo
@@takumisato7126 mostly just wheel spin anyway
Step #1: Go watch "My New Honda," the "My New Haircut" parody video. Step #2: Proceed to laugh ass off. LOL 😆😂 Nice score on the long block! Time for some VEEEEEEETTEEEECCCCCCCC!!!!!
Killer to see this. I have no experience with the V-TEC motors. I've only worked on the CVCC & other SOHC motors. Might be worth hanging onto that SI block if you think the $ value of the SI will continue to rise. Y'know the numbers matching block/chassis thing.
Yeah, maybe? I just can't see someone ever wanting one of these with the SOHC vs DOHC... like.... it's just worse. The SiR is more desirable.
@@addvancedgarage Rob, you are right. The Civic looks so damn good, I overlooked the fact that it has 150k on it. The last 2 Honda SOHC motors I ran had over 100k mi and good even compression, but were burning some oil. I pulled the valve springs and replaced the valve stem seals... problem solved, and clocked over 200k mi on both vehicles as daily drivers.
