The Racing Game That Refuses To Die - Mario Kart Wii

- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- With over 37 million copies sold, Mario Kart Wii has broken records as not only the most popular game in the Mario Kart series but also the best selling racing game of all time.
Similar to other competitive Nintendo titles, Mario Kart Wii has seen the rise of a competitive scene fueled by a passionate community that is still going strong to this day despite a distinct lack of developer support. In today's video, we take a deep dive into the world of Mario Kart Wii esports.

Hey guys we hope you enjoyed this deep dive into the Mario Kart Wii esports scene! Special thanks to TWD98, Arc Intel
, NMeade, and Arsene/New Leaf Esports
for their contributions to this video.
Thank you for covering this game
This is very good on describing the casual scene and where mario kart wii is at this point, but really fails to touch on mario kart wii as an esport. Time trialling is not an e-sport, most people would agree with that, at least prior to a tt online mod. Also not one of the players you mention as a source is even on an active team for the biggest e-sport league in the community right now, which is Mario Kart Professional Series (MKPS). I should mention Arc played in the first leg of this series, but his team has since disbanded and reformed with a roster that is not playing MKPS. At 8:01, you say lounge is the best to play to competitive. Lounge is widely regarded by almost everyone who plays this game competitively as far less competitive then wars (clan battles, as you say in your video, to circumvent demonetisation I assume), due to the fact that Item luck is much less of a factor in a war then a Lounge event (mogi). Also, you say Lounge was founded about 1 year ago, when in fact, It was founded on December 10th, 2017. Also, the elo system for lounge with the thresholds for rankings is from season 4, not the current season 5. Also, I'm very disappointed to see you didn't credit Joris in the video, here is his channel, most of the footage discussing wars is from him, ua-cam.com/users/jorisjv2000. Overall its a very good video on the state of the game, but hardly touches the esports scene, leaving out the largest league (in terms of prize money and length of a season) this game has ever had for an e sport. I'm vert glad to see you did show it off on a large and diversified platform, hopefully it can direct people to the actual e sports side of this game
what about nintendo they made the game
Akshon Esports never thought you would cover this game! Mkwii is so unique with its community
Love the video! I would love to see a video about Mario Kart Ds (If you haven’t done one) as it is also a very popular Mario Kart game.
Imma sum up this video in one sentence:
MarioKart Wii doesn't belong to Nintendo anymore, It belongs to the people
Nintendo threw it away cause it wasn't making profit but the fans took it and made it bigger than everB)

Well, hey, how did I never know about this video? This is awesome! Yeah, MKW is going strong and I think a lot of us who have been playing the game since its inception are excited about the direction things are moving at the moment. Recently the MKW World Cup took place, which was a very exciting event and watched by many thousands of people. “...always has been...”
Me a Rosalina Flame runner main: I feel left out here tho not much I can do about it.
A few reasons why MKWii is still so popular nowadays and why it sold so well.
-The Wii was a very successful console and for every Nintendo console, the Mario Kart is always a must have.
- The Wii is very easy to mod. That way CTGP, which is super easy to install, not only maintains the online experience, but also adds soo much more to the game (200cc, item rain, hundreds of custom tracks etc.)
- The game has no skill ceiling. Even after years of playing you can find ways to optimise how you play, plus its mechanics can get very complex. Plus the game is actually hard to completely master. It's even relatively hard to unlcock certain characters and vehicles.
- The game introduced a ton of a new stuff to the series (12 racers, motion controls, bikes, inside drifting, tricks, first great online, yes ds had online too but it wasn't nearly as widespread as wii).
- The game is broken, but in a good way. It has a ton of small glitches that when properly utilised can make a huge difference. Those glicthes also provide a ton of variety to the game and make it stand out.
- The shortcuts are INSANE. Some of them were so massive you had to make a special term for them (ultra-shortcuts). New shortcuts are still being found today.
- The item distribution is INSANE. Combine that with all the shortcuts and you get the most chaotic MK game ever made. You can get hit with 4 blue shells in one race. You can go from first to last in 2 seconds. The thundercloud might give you nightmares. The game can be so unfair, but at the samr time it's part of what makes you want to come back to it time and again.
- Not as important as the rest but best MK roster. Yes it's not as big as MK8 Deluxe but it has great variety and who am i kidding it's literally got Funky Kong
DiX Inc. what I’ve noticed about this game is that by making things hard to unlock, it’s indirectly forcing you to get way better to unlock more stuff, which makes you come back to the game...very sneaky and I love it
I mean yeah the roster is great, but does it really matter when most people feel like only 2 characters are viable?
Don't forget it's successors being a handheld game and a game for one of Nintendo's least popular systems and then a port of that one
I think mk8(the wii u one) not that good also contributed to mkwii’s success
@@DTheAustralian The characters don't matter that much. funky Kong and Daisy are only slightly better then the other characters. The big difference in stats are due to the vehicles. So what I'm saying: The best combos in the game are because of the vehicles, not the characters.
It's crazy to think how different the game would be right now if MrBean35000vr never contributed to the Mario Kart Wii community.
It would be completely dead, without mr bean wiimmfi probably wouldn’t have existed and it would be really boring to play against CPU’s and watch people play against CPU’s on youtube. The only aspect of the game that could survive without wiimmfi and CTGP is world records in time trials
Torben Sugden mr bean is the GOAT like he literally saved a game when Nintendo was like nah men get outta here
@@torbensugden Wrong wiimmfi would also exist when ctgp-r wouldn't exist. Wiimmfi was mainly created to continue the weekly (wednesday and thursday) wiimms mario kart fun online matches.
Also Wiimms Mario Kart Fun is together with ctgp the only distributions which exist since the beginning (2010) and still gets updates nowdays. CTGP-R gets smaller track updates every few months, while mkw fun gets a bunch of new tracks and updates every 3 months.
wiki.tockdom.com/wiki/Wiimms_Mario_Kart_Fun
Well, let’s tally the things Mr. Bean has done.
-He figured out how the checkpoint system worked, thus leading to the discovery of many ultra shortcuts
-He is the main person behind CTGP
-He held the longest lasting world record in the game’s history, a 32.818 on Wario’s Gold Mine which lasted for over 6 years
-He made the Ghost sharing platform that is still used today
-He helped make the anti cheat system that plagued Nintendo WFC
-He made the “My Stuff” folder, allowing other mods to be used
@@chilln0648 "My stuff" was a Riivolution feature that was simply ported to the CTGP channel. People could make other mods just fine without needing CTGP.
A better example would be how Bean and Chadderz made the SZS modifier and CTools, which paved the way for other file editors to pop up.

Because it had funky kong.
It's quite the amazing game tbh.
And has probably one of the best rosters of characters and stages.
The variation of the characters and the map glitches really help. Daisy and Funky Kong are meta but you decide who to pick based on the maps etc
O h it’s not that diverse. Funky and Daisy are default for most map. Unless they decide to do a certain weight class only, you’ll see Daisy and Funky all the way.
@@giahypham4111 True... I realised that as I was writing that comment and was considering deleting it. It's mostly the maps honestly along with the community
O h at least the community is active. The balancing is bad, but people make it work by doing game mode like certain kart combinations only, outside drift bikes only etc.
character variation and stages made it for me....and funky kong lol even if he wasnt the fastest id still play as him just cus hes a badass hahaha
"New Character's like Funky kong and Funky kong" 😂
Dry Bowser, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, and Rosalina: "Am I a joke to you?"
one of the most interesting things about this is that if the game gets a large competitive fanbase like Melee, we could see a "Mario Kart Ultimate" down the line intended to try and win that fanbase back as Smash Ultimate was intended to (and to some extent did) with the Melee fanbase.
I would love that tbh, especially if they bring back every technique as well, like Snaking, Wheelies, etc etc

100% the best Mario Kart game. Some of the incredible tech you can do and the incredible community makes me absolutely love it. It sits right in that threshold of extremely fun, competitive AND glitchy. It's stunning.
Funky Kong is more of a main character in Mario Kart Wii than in Donkey Kong.
Don’t like your own comment
The lounge/ranked system implemented in the last 3 years or so has really spiked player interest. It's never the same race or situation which is part of the reason it's so addicting. For the most part, there's always room to improve which also contributes to so many people continuing to play.
This game has "the melee effect", beacuse has a big competitive scene that refuses to the new games of the series, andI love it!!
Riccoe still my favorite Mario Kart wii
And the fan base hate the newer games and they’re toxic
The new ones are very different from mkwii, the skill ceiling of wii is much higher, while the new games were toned down for casual players.

Ironically, this game had 0 DLC or Updates. I think that says something.
I think custom tracks and other modifications is one of the big reasons why mkw is still very popular.
So technically there were a lot of updates.
Not really, DLC was new at the time and something the Wii just did NOT do.
Animal crossing city folk dlc
I think that says the game came out in 2008
Shoutouts to TWD98 for helping to keep the community alive
My favorite part about mario kart wii is that there is actually a skill gap. In mario kart wii, the better player will almost always win, while in mario kart 8 deluxe, it is super easy to be screwed by items. It will always be the melee of mario kart, full of jank but that’s what makes it good :)
I agree. I hate how in MK8 you can get a star or a golden mushroom in second place.
Mario Kart Wii has started my gaming career when I was 5 when It got released. I’m now nearly 17 and I always will have a grin on my face when I see this gem and play it myself every now and again with my own custom textures
"new nintendo characters, like funky kong, and funky kong." hit the nail right on the head
I've always said MKWii was the Melee of MarioKart.
me too
Mario Kart Wii is the Melee of Mario Kart in the sense that it never dies.
@E Peen How exactly? Don't get me wrong, mkds is a great game, but it doesn't have nearly as big of a community as mkwii.
I love Mario Kart Wii and still play it regularly. I’m happy to see that faces such as ArcIntel and NMeade made it into the video.
Some issues I have with the video:
• The consoles are simply called Wii and Wii U, not the Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo Wii U
• 1:46 - Why are you showing MK8 gameplay here?
• 2:55 CTGP 2.8 actually only had 28 custom tracks (hence the name). When CTGP 4.4 came out, it had 44 custom tracks and introduced custom course slots for the first time. CTGP Revolution v1.0 then improved on this with 104 custom tracks (as well as the original 32 Nintendo courses), the custom menu system we know and love today, and Custom Tracks Worldwide.
• 3:02 Chadderz wasn't his “new” partner in crime - in fact, he made SZS Modifier, the first tool that allowed people to make custom tracks and what was used for the first few years of the game’s life.
• 3:39 The features you mentioned were not initially included with CTGP v1.03 (however, Bean refuses to change the version number past v1.03, as he sees it as the “last” version due to the channel’s automatic updater).
• 11:12 These numbers are inaccurate due to the pandemic, which is noted on the Wiimmfi website. Take a look at the average numbers and you’ll see they shot up starting in March. Also, that image you showed is of logins in the past 10 hours, not the past 10 days.
Other than those issues, you guys covered our community’s game pretty well. Looking forward to seeing more in the future 👍
I need to get my Wii out. I played the modded tracks back when they first released but I didn't realize how much had improved since then.
I remember as a kid being severely addicted to Mario Kart wii around 2011-2012, and I never imagined it would still be alive in 2021. It makes me so happy that it did
*4:16* As soon as he begins talking about MK8, creepy Bowser castle music starts in the background 👌👌👌😂
By the time this happened, I joined the community back in 2018, but I used to play this in my childhood, I was a casual player back then. Now I am very competitive at the game, things have changed over the years, adding 200cc, Item Rain, New CTGP Tracks, 24 Player Mode, Lounge, and Online TT. It has some potential to be the best game. I looking forward to the MKW Community to continue to grow. Shout out to TWD98, Arc, Sword, NMeade, Mr. Bean for keeping Community alive.
Hi, Arsene here. Thankyou so much Akshon for the opportunity to interview! Very proud to have been included in this project.

1:52 funky kong, and funky kong
Not only is it the best Mario Kart game, it’s the greatest video game of all time. Better than literally any other game ever released, and you can’t change my mind.
I agree, Mario Kart Wii is the best video game imo.
Noooooo
Name checks out
A few years ago I would have said that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is better. But now that I learned how to play Mario Kart Wii competitive, I definitely agree with you. Mario Kart Wii is my favourite game of all time.
No it doesn't lmao, it has serious balancing problems.
Been playing for all 12 years. Haven't gotten bored yet!
Same. Wii is by far the most interesting Mario Kart game because of it's competitive controls and difficult shortcuts. Mario Kart 8 as an example gets boring quickly.
Ikr mk8 just gets so repetitive after a while but mkwii always comes out with new stuff for every aspect of it (custom tracks, custom game modes, WRs, TAS strats, etc.). No race every feels the same, and while I can’t say it’s never frustrating (losing to RNG lol), it’s never boring, which is what solidifys itself has my favourite mk game
'So when do you plan to stop making mario kart games?'
Nintendo: 'Yes'
? What do you mean
A Yellow Shoe Yes usually means a lot of something, the way “Yes” is being used in this situation means Nintendo won’t stop making Mario Kart games any time soon.
No no you did it incorrectly
It should have been "So how many Mario kart games will you make" or something along those lines
In mkwii it’s the best for 3 reasons 1 the gameplay mechanics and how it works is so good I mean if you look a mk8 duluxe it seems the game that is good and proper where as in mkwii you can clip through a wall no prob and that’s what makes it good the mechanics graphics controls way it works way it looks it’s just crazy
I'm really excited for what our community has in store next. Respect for making this!
When I heard the opening for MKWii again, I felt nostalgia wash over me like waves over rocks in the sea.
I need to get another Wii.
With 500 daily logins I can’t really keep my hopes up for this game getting big again. The cost of entry is high with the limited hardware supply, plus the mods you have to implement, and then you jump into a minute pool of players who have years of experience ready to crush you. Unless there’s a way for new comers to get into, this game won’t grow to the level melee has. It’s just not possible.
that's not true. people pick up the game relatively fast - i know people playing competitive after 6 months of playing the game, whereas i have played since 2010 and i am only low level competitively
In case people were fooled by this ignorant comment, there are many ways of being paired up with racers with little to none experience, skill based match making exists, top players don't play people that just started, you don't see messi playing with ur neighborhood kids do you? of course not. lol
I’m proud to have mkwii be my first mario kart game
It's crazy how perfectly this parallels to Melee's scene, that's freaking awesome they found a way to keep it alive!
Edit: they should team up with the Melee community to put on some events! It'd be a good way to get exposure to both scenes
Mario kart Wii was just so well made
Still my favourite mario kart game to this day
TWD98 is a seasoned veteran and due to him and mrbean and others in the community the game hasn't died and obviously the people. I've been watching Troy since he was at 50k man like 6 years ago man time flies
100 years from now, when the next Avatar wakes up from their frozen slumber, people will still be playing Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros Melee.
Mario kart wii is probably one of the influential games in speedruns or just influential in general
There is still a serious opportunity for esports and competitive play. For example, 2v2, and full teams but without immunity. You'd be surprised at the amount of communication and complex playing at that level.
I'm so happy that there's still such a huge community of people who play MKW and invent new tracks and mods... and I'm so glad to be part of this Mario Kart Wii community
And in the future people can also enjoy the game in various new languages like Dutch, Portuguese (PAL), Portuguese (NTSC),Russian, Greek, Polish, Finnish, Swedish, Czech, Hungarian, Catalan, Croatian, Simplified Chinese, Thai, Latin, Andalusian thanks to our Translation Project by Larry98, Zach, Atlas and Syara and a lot of translators. And those are just the languages which we are currently testing. Another 27 languages are currently in progress by our translators.
Amazing video, thanks for putting some more attention on MKW! Could have mentioned the 24 player mode coming soon, you use clips of it at 6:16 (Yes it will work online too)
Better called: "Funky Kong Bike"
I thought I knew everything about MKWii online, but I learnt a few things in this documentary alone, such as the fact there's E-Sports events and that MOGI isn't a general term for standard online clan battles.
6:38 is when they explained why MKW hasn't died.
Really good video! Always nice to see this game get the love it deserves from OUTSIDE the community
1:50 Funky Kong and Funky Kong
Just thought that was funny because Funky Kong is the most OP character in mkw
I'm glad they made the customs servers to keep the community alive. It's better than ever now. Throwback to the last race on WFC too :D
I remember when I speedrun the game when I was younger. I try to get to the top quartile in every race course. The ones I did good at I practiced until I get top 100 on some of the courses. Then I soon got top 10 in a few courses. I stopped playing and later moved on to MarioKart 7 on the DS
It refuses to die because it is superior to 8 in literally every way (apart from Graphics, because it's a Wii game)
“Log into wiimfi daily” NOPE not me definitely lmao
i never knew why i was so attracted to playing mario kart wii over any of the other mario karts, but being so into melee made me appreciate the feeling of being fully in control over my character. I wasn't aware of all the mods and custom servers, i just play the original tracks by myself for hours or whenever a friend is over. I'm really excited to try out all of the options that are available for this game.
Nintendo: **D I E**

Wasn't the biggest fan of MKWii back when it came out (i'm an MKDS and DD guy myself) but it makes me happy that this game has stood the test of time so well and that people are doing great things with it. Makes me want to get back into it myself.
Mario kart wii is the melee of mario kart. With weird balancing and graphics, but amazing gameplay. It's still my favorite mk game
This is my favorite game. I wish I could still play it but my Wii broke years ago and I don't know where to find one.
they should be really easy to find. try looking at your local retro games shop or flea market (if you have one)!
@Me 6 Do you have a Wii U? You can also play it on the Wii U (including Ctgp)
I was the rosalina player at 9:12, this video was awesome man
This isn't the only Mario Kart game that refuses to die.
My younger self did wheelies after mini-turbos not becuase it was an "advanced technique," but becuase everyone was doing it. Because it was better. Because it made me a better player. It all seemed so natural. MK Wii was my first online game. I'm glad it was.
This is the perfect analogy. Newer MK games have too much of a linear pattern that prevents advanced shortcuts from appearing when in reality, pros like those shortcuts because they allow more in-depth analysis and skill for the game. Nintendo has been making games for casuals, and not thinking of the competitive and skilled side of the game. That is why it is many of the classic games that are popular because of the continuous fanbase.
8 deluxe just never captured the magic of Mario kart wii. Truly the melee of the Mario kart series.
oh who's that 6:14
w0t
This is beautiful thank you for showing a little of our community :)
Why would they get rid of being able to wheely
Because they were op, and Nintendo didn’t want karts to be unviable in Mario KART
crobodile they coulda just nerfed it
@@crobodile Wheelies aren't actually that broken. They are basically just an addition to your speed stat. The reason why people say wheelies are broken, is because inside drifting bikes are so OP and those have wheelies. But they aren't OP because of wheelies but instead because of the inside drift. If wheelies would be OP than outside drifting bikes would be better then Karts and that's not the case.
"and it also added new nintendo characters, such as Funky Kong, and Funky Kong
Mario Kart 8 took away things that I think even casual players loved: Crazy tricks, halfway pipes, and Mario Kart Wii imo has a better sense of speed and momentum.
In Mario Kart Wii, when you did a trick, your character would jump out of the vehicle, do crazy stuff, stand on their hands, etc. In Mario Kart 7 they made the animations much wilder and for some reason kept it like that in Mario Kart 8.
Also WHERE IS FUNKY KONG.
I just can’t go back to Vanilla Mario Kart Wii ever again, CTGP is by far the BEST way to play the game and it’s because of that mod and the community that Wii my favorite Mario Kart game with 8 Deluxe trailing it behind.
im glad people out of the mario kart or mario kart wii community are talking about it it is honestly a amazing game
Hands down the best Mario kart of all time for me in my opinion
Long live Mario Kart Wii
Mario Kart 8 kinda sucks ngl
it's awsome but theres no mario vibe to it
The tour tracks ruined it
I just watched Ludwig co stream like the world cup crew battle thing and the game is actually so fun to watch. This game didn't really even cover like the Baggers and all the sick game mechanics for competitive that really made me enjoy watching.
And to think this is my first ever video game I played in my life is still astonishing to me. I was literally 3-4 years only when I started playing it (now I'm a teen who recently took his first ever exams in his life) and i still have the original disk that still works till this day. I'm too happy for it keeping it up till this day because of the fans.
