Declaration of Independence Scene (National Treasure)

- National Treasure is a guilty pleasure of mine. I have a strange liking for the movie, despite many people thinking it's ridiculous. This is one of the more awesome scenes. Enjoy!
Should we start a petition to have Nicolas Cage do a dramatic reading of the entire Declaration of Independence instead of just one line?
I would definitely watch it :-)
Im down for that
Woow, definitely we must not miss that chance.
Absolutely.
@@jamesschiller1859 haha, though the words are very relevant to our time when there is a cognitive decline demented bonehead and tyrant as president with Biden. Funny though that the left were all screaming tyrant with Trump; and that Biden proved to be the real corrupt tyrant.
"Those who have the ability to take action have the responsibility to take action." that is such a beautiful line.
Nicolai Holmstoel I don't get it
Needs to happen right now.
Hello Spider-Noir
Nicolai Holmstoel Yeah like killing everybody who thinks it contains one syllable about loud noises being ok on the wrong day it was signed.
To bad no one remembers these words😭😭😭😭😭
People always notice Cage's batshit crazy moments, but he's actually pretty good at being dramatic.
Zenhotta I mean here I was laughing prettt hard, but Adaptation and Moonstruck are dope performances
Zenhotta And all you can do is cuss on the Internet for attention and remain a nobody who won’t be remembered.
@@corey-bird3489 Sounds like you're projecting about not being remembered. You need someone to talk to ya?
Like when he starred as FDNY Sergeant McLoughlin in “World Trade Center”
The Yam Industry My channel is your loss.
"People don't talk that way anymore."
That line gets me every time...
me too
It's true
It is true. We do not. And it is a sad thing for anyone who loves language.
It's our language, it's beautiful and detailed.
Never did people speak that way. The founding fathers were the one percent of the one percent. On top of that, all official documents were written in a very formal register. You have to be seriously delusional about the past to think that the vastly illiterate masses spoke the same language as people like Washington, someone who was worth half a billion dollars in today’s money.
1:04 so you're telling me the Declaration of Independence says with great power comes great responsibility....
Life and Gaming you're not wrong
No we're saying that ummmmmmmm.......it says.............crap. Damn you marvel!
No, it is saying that when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you.
Life and Gaming my god he’s learning!!!
The founding fathers predicted Marvel 200 or so years before it was made.
This movie might be a popcorn adventure flick, but what always gets me is the true love and reverence for history wrapped into every corner of it. The characters might joke with each other, laugh at their enemies, and behave like buffoons, but every main character shares the same awe of these simple artifacts and what they represent. I think that's beautiful.
is it bad to say that this was Cage's best performance in a film? It didn't feel like Nic Cage trying to play a character, he just looked completely in his element here. Felt really natural and believable.
The movie probably would have failed without him.
Savant level smart, a little weird and a little crazy. Yep, that's a role Nic Cage was born for.
This was cages prime right here. Fantastic movies with incredible acting by him.
@J H well this would just be another Indiana Jones if that happened
Personally I think Nic has 2 characters, batshit crazy Cage and Nicolas Cage. Crazy Cage works well in some cases, but most of the time it's just...weird, out of place, I don't know. Nic cage as Nic cage also belongs in certain places, like in National Treasure for example, but in other movies where the cast of characters is very believable, throwing in Nic Cage as Nic Cage is a bit awkward.
But, there is 1 more character that Nic has up his sleeve, and it's the only time I've ever seen him play a character that did not make me think "oh that's just typical Nic Cage", and it is my personal favorite...
Johnny Cammareri from Moonstruck. In this movie he doesn't seem like Nicolas Cage, he seems like a completely different person, a _character_ finally! Also he has some great lines in this movie:
*heavy New Yorker accent throughout*
(Loretta) "Johnny" /bakery girl/
"Get in my bed!"
"Bring me the big knife, I'm gonna slice my throat."
/No Johnny!/
"Bring me the big knife!"
/No! I won't let you do it!/
(Where are you taking me?) "To the bed."
Ben: I'm gonna steal it.
Riley: What?
Ben: I'm going to steal the Declaration of Independence.
Denise Dixon And not a single syllable about loud noises.
Gives the same energy as ,'I am going to kidnap the President of the United States Of America.'
The mind of Thomas Jefferson was genius. Consider by many to this day the most intelligent of all US Presidents. The man can surely write.
I am his 5th great grandnephew. I always have been a fan of all of the founding fathers.
Back then people actually thought about their laws before writing them. These days Presidents don't even know the first couple regulations in the legislation they pass. *Cough* DRUMPF *Cough*
Fuck that greedy bastard
@Stalinx20 oh god you are so terribly misinformed...
@Stalinx20 He was originally a registered republican. He was only a registered democrat for 8 years.
"It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans" his own words why he regiatered as a democrat at all. He also registered as independent and then not at all until running on the republican ticket. He litterly just registered under whatever party put more money in his pocket (he is a businessman)
Oh and How he can be a registered Democrat whilst running as republican is beyond me but you go ahead and explain that in all your wisdom. Sorry if i didnt run to respond to a fool like yourself I actually think before ranting on youtube. Go ahead and continue spewing nonsense though
As it turns out, it is a lot easier to break into The Capitol and Rotunda than this movie suggested
Benjamin Gates was just showing off
You do realize that's not the capitol rotunda right?
@@joewoods9963 I like how it took two months for anyone to point this out to him.

He was a slave owner.

Never has a movie become more relevant than now
Best scene of this movie
Best scene in film history*
This needs to be used, here and now, in 2021.
“When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government” ― Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence (Constitutions)
Now, when that particular line is more significant and true than ever, you’d be thrown in jail as a domestic terrorist for acting upon it
I’ve been to the national archives twice, this has to be the least crowded it has ever been
And the brightest. It was pretty dark when I went.
This speech is more relevant today. 20 years later, then ever.
As someone mentioned above: this film itself is truly a national treasure.
Poor Riley...
As he's running to catch up to Ben, you could just hear his thoughts... "Damn it, this man is gonna get me arrested."

If that is actually part of the Constitution, we may be getting to the point such action is necessary.
@@lemhanback9595. -- It is of course part of the Constitution -- or in this case, The Declaration of Independence, (at least). -- But the Founding Fathers understood that when this happens, such actions were ALWAYS necessary.

A beautiful words (make me almost cry) from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Hendy Halim Then what did you care?
It’s such good writing here because he immediately takes the quote from the Declaration and uses it as justification for stealing it. He has the ability to take action and keep it out of Ian’s hands, so he knows it is his sole responsibility to do so - in order to keep the document safe. Even though he does want to examine it, he cares more about protecting it from Ian.
I love this film.

The framers of our founding document were well-educated aristocrats from England. They knew how to build a country from the ashes of a revolution.
Once you tear down the system do you have a plan to build it back up? Flipping the social pyramid doesn't change the paradigm, it just crumbles and becomes a mockery of its former self.

This scene hits differently as an adult
I know this is just a movies but in these times we need heroes like this. Those who can look past political and social beliefs and believe in the ideals of the declaration of independence in its simplest form, freedom and equality. Also to have the courage to take a stand for such ideals.
It's a bit more nuanced than "freedom and equality" but I get what you mean. It's more about resisting authoritarianism. It may seem like "freedom and equality" and "resisting authoritarianism" are the same thing, but they aren't. The relationship is analogous to the difference between donating money to charity and stopping a robbery. Both are good deeds, but they are good deeds in starkly different ways.
I'm gonna steal it.
What?
OH GOD NO NOT THE BEES
I watched NT a few days ago for the first time and this movie symbolizes everything modern action adventure movies fail to do:
- The characters are fun to watch;
- Of course, the story isn't the best thing ever, but it's good enough;
- The effects look better than most movies now, which makes the characters look like they're actually in danger;
We watched this in social studies and towards the end when the girl was like “I’ve made a map for you” and the ben was like “what does this lead to” and she was like “you’ll find out” and walked inside the house and Ben followed her (running). I felt so uncomfortable like you don’t understand how it’s like watching that with a teacher

Pretty much.
Sure, better than other countries at least, where they can censor you anytime, jail you for talking or making fun of them as if they were gods, the U.S is the last standing free country, once it looses that, it will become just another russia or china, people will migrate wherever if there is no beacon of freedom.

mary ellis You ever read old speeches? Mist of the time it's riddled wirh word vomit and redundancy.
They don't talk that way? No one ever talked that way. The "old" speeches we hear are people trying their absolute hardest to sound cool and sophisticated. Fifty sentences copying and pasting thesauruses all looping back to the same train of thought that could be expressed simply and beutifully at the same time, with far fewer words. Normal way of speaking in those times were perhaps even less 'formal' than the one we currently use, and most normal people of those times didn't know what half the words used in the Declaration of Independance even meant.
Language evolves, and as ways of speaking evolve to become more similar to eachother, the gap between "peasant" speak and "noble" speak of the government starts to get more connected. This is a good thing. It means the distance between the government and the people are closing, and that means hopefully in a few decades or a century, or two, (a very generous estimation) people won't need to study for years in order to understand the laws that they abide and the rights they use daily.
1:24 *walks away Cage-like* -the caption is very accurate!
the captions on the video are incredible 10/10
To me it's more than just words, its more than just history, it's our freedom and defines what it means to be an American. Freedom used to be the one thing we all agreed upon. Great clip Josher, I just wish it mean more, to more people
It's less about personal freedom and more about fighting authoritarianism. Those might sound like the same thing at first, but the relationship between the two is analogous to the difference between giving someone money and stopping a robbery.
