Thanks for reviewing this…btw, have you thought about doing a small green where you can lay cards so that we can see them close up, kind of like Rahdo does? It would have helped when you were showing off cards…
I just rewatched after my first game with the delivered game. I agree with every point in this video. This is a gold medium weight title. It's a do a ton of stuff super set collection / resource management game. One comparison I'd make is that it's like a lighter version of Grand Austria Hotel. Looking forward to playing more games and with various player counts.
Game looks great, ready for production. Wish all prototypes were this well done. Theme is interesting, especially considering Darwin's Journey last year. The board is quite large, and I think I would prefer a board that can be separated and laid out in different ways, and just move the scoring elsewhere.
Besides theme, the most striking similarity I found to Wingspan is the luck of the card draw and almost no control over this... Thus one is still frustrated with not getting the animal he needs (as with the birds in Wingspan). Thus, it seems a heavier/more complex game, with the same vibes and problems... Well, I don't think it will replace the family-friendlier appeal of Wingspan... And I'll just keep my copy of Everdell.
I was excited for this when I first saw it was coming. Now... not so much. It doesn't look like the animal / research aspect means anything other than a convenient place to put a cube. Looks like it was designed around mechanics then a theme was needed so it was slapped on. Appreciate the video Alex, now I know its not a game for me.
Have you played Genotype? These games feel very similar to me (much more similar than Wingspan, anyway) and I wonder whether a collection really needs both. Both are die-drafting games that involve researching traits and give bonuses for matching traits. Both have worker placement spots. Both have powerful experts. I think they both seem very good, but I have a hard time deciding whether someone would want to own both and if they don't, which one is better.
Was curious on your thoughts about publishing. Do you think its better to publish all at once at end of game, multiple times throughout game, or is it more complicated thean that and depends on the particular session?
I backed this game and Holy Grail Games' last KS Rallyman Dirt in July 2020....still hasn't even started production but Encyclopedia is about to start production.....little confused about that! 😅
just some feedback from one man's perspective. the overview was so detailed and intense and explained so quickly that it was hard not to just check out from the video. your intro made me super pumped to hear more but i had to tap out of the exhaustive rules descriptions to go find another video. should an 'overview' really be 15 minutes long? i don't think so tbh. but i do like this channel, maybe a compromise could be to include a one minute primer so people can skip the full rules explanation if theyre inclined to, if that's something you would consider.
My wifes favourite game is Museum by the same makers, just got hold of Museum Pictura and that is similar but has a quite a few differences. Looking forward to this, if it's anything like the other two, and this looks a step, up it will be a very good and well produced game.
@@BoardGameCo We are on our first play, the theme of history in museum and art in pictura really appeals to my wife. I love them as well, and the game is different enough to not feel like a total copy. By the way wanted to thank you for the hard work and videos, they give me a lot of pleasure for me and my wife to watch who have only been into board games seriously a few years now.
This sounds amazing. You know, as you talking about it being a 5 of 5, but not TM, I started thinking - of your top 100, are they all 5’s? Or at some point do you drop your rating to a 4.5? A 4? And where. Next time you do a top (I guess end of year), what do you think of adding your ranking to each game? Or maybe just where you transition from levels? (That’s assuming your lowest 5 is above your top 4.5, and I can think of some reasons why that might not be the case,
@@BoardGameCo The top 40, or are they mixed in? (For example, I can see a game being a 5 relative to other games in its category (i.e., solo, lighter/filler/shorter), but rank lower in the overall top 100 compared when compared with a heavy/longer game that's a 4.5 relative to others in its category.
Nice, that are statements that I can work with 😁 now let's see if it works for the player count I need. But Alex I watch all your content, no need to bait me ;)
Love the look and theme of the game. My only concern with it is after playing the other games by the designers (Museum and Dominations), both of which I enjoy, I've come to realize that while the mechanisms are sound, the actual physical play is a bit cumbersome or fiddly (e.g. repetition of take a token, spend a token in a higher volume than other games). Playthroughs I've seen of this seem to lean in that direction as well. Again, looks like a great game, might just be the constraints of physical tabletopping that will end up holding me back from backing this time around.
I was falling asleep watching this. Made me want to bust out wingspan. Thanks for the review. Saw another little game that looked more fun. Could be really good.
@@BoardGameCo I’ll watch it again because I am highly interested. Maybe I was feeling like those times where I just want to hear what excites you about it. I got lost in the description of rules . Thanks again. Great to see reviews . This kind of content brings me to this channnel.
I think you need to focus more on the board and not yourself when reviewing to explain how the game plays. I would suggest close ups of the cards as you cant see the icons or what you are refering to.
Encyclopedia...animals? I don't think of animals when thinking about encyclopedias. I guess there could be hundreds of expansions on all kinds of subjects. I wish it was more about history.
Played with a print and play and the game gave me a headache. It's much too long with 4 players (in 3.5 hours we only played 5 rounds and decided to pack up then). You score so many points it's silly, and you have to calculate all the combos. The game is super mathy, making you calculate for days. Not for me.
I’m ten minutes into this video and have no idea what you are talking about. You just keep saying for points, but not enough thematic verbiage in the overview. I can go play any game with actions and points.
I don't normally watch the brand new game game videos but your title got me and I clicked! Thanks for the new recommendation!
Thanks for reviewing this…btw, have you thought about doing a small green where you can lay cards so that we can see them close up, kind of like Rahdo does? It would have helped when you were showing off cards…
Yep, have definitely thought about it and plan to do it at some point.

Glad you're enjoying it :)
Thanks! We have the exact same thoughts as you. Loving the game. Much more thinky than I originally thought but love that aspect.
Seems pretty interesting! Definitely going to be on the lookout for gameplay closer to the Kickstarter.
Coming soon :)
I really hope they take your criticisms into account. I'll follow along to see if they do.
Thanks for including your opinion of the solo mode!
:)

Easily my #1 most anticipated KS this year
It's excellent :)

I can hear that, but for me mechanics are more important than theme so that works.

Sounds like the main mechanic of Troyes. One of my favorite games.
Can you compare this to Genotype?
I'll take a look. Thanks.
It's great :)
It looks interesting, but the theme didn't really come across to me. I will definitely give it a look though. Thanks for the video.
It's mechanics first but the theme is there too.

Totally get that, I got lost in this one

I need to play museum pictura :)

I wonder how this compares to recent KS “Earth” ?
Having played both, very different :)

Around 40 games are 5's

Thank you a lot for this video. I could make a late pledge on Gamefound.
Is the theme pasted on or does it feel thematic
It's mechanics first for sure. The theme is there but secondary.
What rating would you give the game if you only played it solo?
Looks like another euro to add to my collection. Been enjoying a bunch coming out recently, a good time to be a fan.
How does it compare to Darwin's Journey?
Sadly I haven't played that one yet.
is there any TTS for this game?
Unofficially yes join the discord

Looks great! Is it me or the layout of the board looks a lot like the one in Gutenberg? Lol
Haven't seen Gutenberg in detail yet :)
It sounds good so I will check it out.
It's excellent
@@BoardGameCo So you say, but it does sound pretty sweet. Will give it a hard stare when it goes up on kickstarter.
Not my style of game, but it looks like it's very well done.
That's fair :)
You and I diverge on wingspan, I totally love wingspan but this one looks good too.

Totally agree with this. So many good things about Museum but it’s a total table hog and the rules about placement in your museum is just bllllaaaahh.
oh 5/5? is a smash... I will check the campaign once out!!!
It's excellent :)
Interesting I hated Castles of Burbundy but I'm very interested in this game. I adore Museum.
Good as Wingspan he says
I was falling asleep watching this. Made me want to bust out wingspan. Thanks for the review. Saw another little game that looked more fun. Could be really good.

Do stuff left and right and take points with no clear goal.. Not for me
This game has no razzle-dazzle. I don’t think it will fly off the shelves.
Rolling dice.....placing dice... stealing dice....no thanks. Give me Wingspan, please!!
I'm just not fun of dice rolling. cheers!
I played this on tabletopia and liked it, but didn't love it.
I can respect that :) this one really checks boxes for me
@@BoardGameCo Always a great day when someone finds a game they really love! Happy for you.

Stop giving 5s you are costing me to much money 💰 😂😂
Lol they're not that common, unsettled just happened to be recent.
I have started collecting in the last 6 months. I have gone back and collected a lot of your 5s. You have yet to disappoint!!
One I have been playing I think you would really like is capers Europe!! I am a big fan and it seems like our styles line up 👍

Absolutely you can. Pick whichever ones speak to you.
Dice tower crew love to use the term themeless which bothers me, I hope they said the same thing for this game.
How does this compare to Darwin's Journey?
I sadly haven't played that one.
