Dave used to build his FuzzFoot's in round FuzzFace-style enclosures. I ordered one about 20 years ago and sold it when I was downsizing my gear. Pretty sure it was a hybrid (but it was a great fuzz). I haven't seen any of those really old ones for sale on eBay or Reverb.
Yeah, Josh rocks. I like his guitar playing and could easily envision this turning into a beast of its own - "elevator music, made for guitar pedals... played by a nerd..."
LOVE seeing the love for Foxrox! I've been into Dave's work for about 15 years. No joke, I have the Captain Coconut 2, the Hot Silicon Fuzz, the ZIM (two-channel), the Octron (original), the Aquavibe, and the Paradox Through-Zero Flanger. And they are all awesome.
JHS devoting so much tie to good content is definitely amplifying them in the market. I have bought two of their pedals in the last year ONLY because I watch all their videos. Josh's willingness to discuss every type of pedal makes him have a general rapport with the blue collar pedal folks and we end up being curious to try out his pedals.
Dear JHS, please please please make an episode on pitch pedals, from the whammy to the marshmallow and everything in between . this is something we need. you’ve done reverbs, delays, and overdrives. but now, we NEED an episode on pitch pedals. i know you’d make it a wonderful neutral-chaotic experience and i hope i’m not alone in this. Sincerely, Mr Poop
Hell yeah! Truly a modern classic; I don't know why it isn't more widely seen and heard. I love mine! SO0O0O0 VERY versatile, too! My favorite fuzz pedal- and I've got a few- and one of my overall favorite pedals. KILLS stacked into distortion! i.imgur.com/TwNlp5d.jpg?1
YES! Slanted and Enchanted is my favorite Pavement record by far and just one of my favorite albums ever. There's so many amazing moments on it, like the fake-out ending on Fame Throwa or the bridge of Loretta's Scars
Hey! I came across your channel a few months back and I've been watching your videos sporadically, until last week. Now I watch them all the time because every time I search on youtube anything about a pedal you are one of the top choices and I love how insightful your videos are. Thank you!
I was that 20% ......I remember that first time..not unlike my first encounter with the Replacement’s, especially when you know nothing or hearing The Cures first....memories that are forced upon you, formed in a way that you remember where you were, what was going on. And exactly what you were doing. That feeling that is a combination of getting hit in the head, and waking up a stranger to yourself. Like the pieces of jigsaw puzzle coming together and giving you a sense of who you are, what you are about. Liberation!. Favorite.... tough call, depends on which way the wind blows. Wowee Zowee any day of the week. Loved those pedals.
My favorite Pavement record is Wowee Zowee. I think “Grounded” is perfection. “Rattled By the Rush” will get stuck in my head for days and it illustrates Pavement’s unique blend of rock music. I dig that they went to Nashville to make an album and came up with this. Slanted is a watershed album but not what I reach for first.
Thank you for creating this content. It’s really cool and admirable that you and your employees get to pursue your passion, make great equipment, and the community seems awesome. Nice bright spot during quarantine.
Love Pavement and think Stephen Malkmus is an underrated guitar player. I had a roommate in college who had a totally irrational hatred for Pavement. I could throw Slanted and Enchanted on and and he would storm out of our apartment in a huff. I guess he's one of the 80 %.
Always fun to watch, love it! I own the CC2 and the Octron (old brown version). Both great pedals and useable in many genres. Great stuff in sincere quality.
Awesome! I've been using my ZIM for years as my primary overdrive and lead pedal, and I got the original Octron when it first came out, and it is fantastic. Glad you finally got a chance to share the story and pedals, because people should know.
I was a high school ska kid totally oblivious to any genre anyone might use to describe Pavement, and then Jeff Rosenstock covered Gold Soundz in BTMI. I loved it so much that I had to check out the original, and that’s how I first learned about good music.
ImPRESSED with these pedals. Oddly there was one jam I thought the guitar sounded awful until you turned on the pedal. What a beautiful guitar and sound. Love that you put a tremolo on it. I think it's a similar tremolo system Ambler Guitars uses. Anyway, thanks for the jams, the pedal knowledge and Record Time. I'm in the 20% but I actually think I like Malkmus solo/The Jicks records better overall. I'm not sure which Pavement album changed my life or if any did in a significant way but I def get where you're coming from with that and you're absolutely right.
YES! I have one of his modded original TZF (1) pedals that he recently built from extra parts with added controls. It is objectively THE best flanger pedal ever, and one of the few truly stereo flange circuits in existence. You should deep dive that pedal for sure if you haven’t. It’s just about the deepest rabbit hole out there.
I’m part of the 20% and have been since 92. Foxrox seems like a great company, thanks for introducing them to me. Still waiting for the sovtek episode.
Im in the 20% like the album and ive only heard it twice. That pretty much means im gonna love it after another 20 listens. The singer is like a mix of Lou Reed/Robert Smith and Johnny Rotten. Thanks dude.
I'm glad I don't have much money. Every time I watch your videos I want to buy a pedal. Every.Time. But I'm honestly thankful for the increase in knowledge.
Didn’t think I’d be part of the 20. But I am. Saw pavement at lollapalooza in 95 at Sandstone in KC. They didn’t do it for me. But hearing this album, I’m realizing how much I adore 90’s music. Guitars, production, lyrics, band names... Thanks Josh
If 80% of your viewers hate Slanted/Enchanted, that would be super sad. It's an iconic recording. Changed a lot of people's musical lives, I think. I know it did mine.
Being from their hometown, Louisville, I’ve been exposed to Pavement enough over the years, thankfully, to get over my initial “wtf is this?” reaction and eventually “get it” (I had a similar experience with another Louisville band in Slint’s “Spiderland”- the album that birthed post-rock)... side note: Shady Lane is a real street, about half a mile away from me...
Turned on my Gibson GA-30RVS, picked up the 96 LP Studio, turned on the Morgan Fuzz, dialed in the Proanalog Manticore V2, and listened to Pavement for the first time: so fun to improvise to and try to pick out; comfortable key centers with enough changes to keep you on your ears.
Josh, Dave is a cool guy. I bought his Prototype Univibe rack (Just like Lukather and Joe Perry) back in late 90's and it is one of the best gear I have and still going strong. Bravo Mr. Fox
I sold my Captain Coconut when the prices when through the roof. I kinda regret parting with it ... I still have the ProVibe pedal prototype from ~20 years ago.
I was a junior in high school when slanted and enchanted came out. I’ve been a fan ever since, saw them in the 90’s and again in 2010. One of the best bands ever.
Cool episode as always. The only advertisement I love to watch is this show! (: As someone who builds his own pedals, this is giving me such a big chunk of fresh ideas. Thank you Josh, keep on going!
When I started watching your videos I actually used to skip record time more often than not. But at some point I decided to listen to one of those band's I had never heared of before, and decided that I will never skip record time again :-D
Record time is a winner and shows another side of your personality. It also shows your passion for music and taste. Where you find the time to make music, build pedals, research and film UA-cam videos, listen to music, have a family etc is beyond me. However, what it does demonstrate is when you're passionate about what you do, you find and make the time. And yes...pavement fan here....errr, ever since the early days. Nice shout out to an often overlooked artist. 😎
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain changed my life. It was my intro into quirky, off the wall music and lyrics. I listened to Slanted after CR and Wowee Zowee so I didn’t like it as much, but it grew on me and I listen to it every once in a while. Stephen Malkmus was supposed to play near me this past summer, but got cancelled because 2020. I hope he comes through when things settle down. Also, these pedals are sick. I’d never heard of them until watching this video. Thanks for making it!
Your videos are so inspiring, i always run to my rig after each vid... Absolutely Love your demos, congrats on your company and channel, and keep em coming.
Really great episode(again)! FoxRox definitely is one the best and deserves to be mentioned! i’ve had several of his pedals but not the zim.. really looking forward to that episode. Josh you have really good channel and humor and playing.. different in a good way. (also like your pedals as well)
So happy to see you finally talk about FoxRox. Though I really wish you had covered some of the older pedals, especially the CC2 and the Paradox TZF. I have never come across another pedal that does what the original TZF did, especially when running it in stereo, and the CC2 hs been on every single one of my boards for the last 15+ years. Phenomenal pedals.
I remember building a Fuzz Face from the Craig Anderson article. I remember there was an error in the circuit. I didn’t get a good result with the AC128 transistors.
Pavement's terror twilight album was the soundtrack for my junior year in high school. Cream of Gold is an incredible track. Are you ever going to do a episode on FOXX? I always see these velvet covered pedals and remember you saying a little about them, but would like to hear more.
I had a hard time convincing fellow Pavement fans that Terror Twilight is da bomb when I was in high school. But it's my fav guitar-play album from them.
Very cool! I never heard of Foxrox but those pedals are so innovative. I definitely added a couple to my wishlist. BTW, I like Record Time and had never listened to Pavement. It didn’t change my life but I like it, and that alone makes my life better. Thanks Josh, great channel.
I’m clearly in the 20%. I love Pavement and Slanted and Enchanted is actually my favorite album by them. Some of it is a little rough, but that is also what I love about it
I turned a friend on to mudhoney ,tad and green river and gas huffer. And she turned me on to camper van Beethoven, cracker and pavement and I listened to almost nothing else for 6 months! Love it. Josh looking to build my first pedal. Would like to build a tone bender mk1 any idea where I could find a diy kit for that pedal? Or do you suggest something else? Thanks for any help.
I remember one of my best friends Nick made me a mixtape back when that was a thing. He put a Pavement song on it “Cut your hair”. I feel in love with the band. Coincidently, I met his friend in Knoxville that same year, that had decided to create a pedal company and he decided to call it Hologram. I got into pedals hardcore after that and I’ve been addicted ever since.
I don’t hate Pavement, but it didn’t change my life. I’m reminded of Tom Verlaine/Television which did change my life. So I guess it was already changed, if that makes sense.
John McConnell Television was a beautiful thing - Marque Moon was bad ass.... not to be glass is half empty.. but now clubs like CBGBs are all closed, and most kids are listening to Justin’s Beaver... the world has gone mad. - Old and Grumpy guitar player.
I enjoy all the episodes, and on top of that Josh is a pavement fan! I am feeling special, being part of the 20% Brighten the corners, Fin and Embassy Row.
Holy crap... "Craig Anderton". There's a name from my teenage years. I bought a copy of his "Electronic Projects for Musicians".. must have been around 1986? I would have been 13 or 14... just started playing guitar, had a Hondo 77 HSS Strat knockoff, a 10W Yamaha amp... and I couldn't afford pedals. So used this book to try building them.. with mixed results. Pretty sure the talk-box and fuzzes were a success. I never got the noise out of the mixer, and I never managed to find an opto-isolator which drove me nuts as all circuits I wanted to build seemed to need them. I also never got the ferric chloride stains out of the carpet. This book taught me enough to land a weekend job at the local electronics store... which is where I went into the computer side of things with these new 486 CPUs had been released. I've been in IT ever since. Google tells me this book is still available, though not sure if it's in print. Is worth putting together a video for these sorts of resources for people who want to build pedals... perhaps showing how some of the circuits sound?
I got a copy of Slanted & Enchanted from the public library when I was a teen and was forever locked into the 20% within the first 20 seconds. The slack, chaotic aesthetic is a huge part of this record's (and Pavement's) massive artistic power.
Yeah, I'm an audio engineer & a fuzz fan, & color me impressed. They sound devilishly dimensional, just from hearing that one setting; I can only imagine how deep you can go down the rabbit hole with these. They just jumped to the head of the line on my pedals to buy list too.
@@JeighNeither Check out the demo Mike Hermans did for the CC Hybrid, there are quite a few demos out there. The CC Hybrid 2 is the same circuit in a smaller enclosure. I'm surprised more people don't know about Dave Fox's stuff.
Thanks for the great clip. Would love to see a video on Hao pedals. Always loved the look, layout and names. Can't find many sound samples or info tho.
Josh, your BigMuff/Zim jam was very Corgan-esque, your bad Hendrix wasn't so bad, and "In the mouth a desert" is one of the most perfect indie rock songs of all time. Definitely in my top 5.
Came here after seeing the yellow one for sale used. They all sound pretty damn good! Especially the “big muff” and the octave one before it. Love it, thanks for the video. Also… Card-carrying member of the Octoplus club since 1995 ✋
Very cool. Looking forward to the deep dive on the Zim. Been doing part time audio engineering and servicing, most of my life; recently delving into guit amps and modding my 1st pedal. The Zim looks like a good fit, for me. Cya nx Wed
Josh , you rock! Love your show man. Its refreshing to hear some really fine rhythm playing as well as pristine sounds! Thank you for all your knowledge 🙏. You guys connect so well together. Peace ✌ and continued blessings
Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite :17 is one of my all time fave Pavement tracks. Have loved them since this record came out. All of my friends thought I was super weird for liking it. I was way into the Velvet Underground though so it just made sense to me. Wowee Zowee is my fave album of theirs as a whole though. Damn, your sidekicks are babies. Thanks, Josh! Great vid.
I have never heard of Foxrox.
But learning about companies you never knew existed is one of the many joys of JHS Pedal Show.
Dave's stuff is AMAZING. I have a ton of his stuff. So great.
@@honeychilerider I have the octron and my dad has a ton of their stuff I can attest good quality, and even better customer support.
I had heard of Foxrox before but they were hard to come by.
Was this all (the company, the youtube series) just a ruse to kickstart Josh's music career? Every jam on this episode was SOLID!
the music industry is garbage and Josh doesn't look like brad pitt , so naturally as a musician, he has to sleuth through alternative revenue sources.
@@JOSEPH-vs2gc I don't know man, have you ever seen THE Atomic Rooster live video playing Black Snake?? You guys know what I'm talking about right??
That shiz was straight fire I must agree

Yes! Great jam with great tones and even better name! 👌😅

I believe the Octron is the greatest analog octave pedal ever created. The tracking is just amazing.

I like this format a lot: Tight and not a big group discussion that gets annoyingly repetitive.
The CC Hybrid is such an outrageously practical fuzz pedal. Great features, really stable.
YES! Slanted and Enchanted is my favorite Pavement record by far and just one of my favorite albums ever. There's so many amazing moments on it, like the fake-out ending on Fame Throwa or the bridge of Loretta's Scars

Thanks for turning me onto Pavement! Back in the day I was into Cake, Replacements and Weezer and this band fits into that sound.
20% for life. For me its always going to be Brighten the Corners.“Everytime I sit around, I find I’m shot”
"Every time, every time, every time, every time..."

✋ Slanted & Enchanted changed my life at age 12. Always love the nerdy-wordy, lax-rock sounds of Pavement.

Wow. Foxrox' Hybrid and Octron sound fantastic. They've been added to my pedal wish list.
I have both of those pedals, I'm pretty sure you'll love them as much as I do!
Thanks man. Much appreciated.
Great guitar playing Josh!
Thanks for the great clip. Would love to see a video on Hao pedals. Always loved the look, layout and names. Can't find many sound samples or info tho.
Listening to just the tele through the amp sounded great and then you switched on the Bionic Cowboy. Wow!
Great sounds and playing. I'm a proud owner of a Crest Audio FF. I bought it new, many moons ago.
Great vid.
So happy Foxrox is now in JHS show!! I'm a big fan of his pedals. I believe TZF should have been mentioned here because it is also fantastic.
That 2nd track on Slanted & Enchanted - "Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite at :17" changed my life for sure. thanks for the recommendation!
Just bought an Octron 3 based on this video. Sounded huge🤘🏻
Captain Coconut!!! My fav Foxrox!
