the Super Nintendo was and is an RPG Lover's dream with titles such as Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and of course the Mona Lisa of Gaming: Chrono Trigger
I just started playing this game recently and wow I am mesmerized by it. Sure I love classics, but I very much enjoy modern games quite a bit and even so, I find this game just astounding. I'm surprised I had a SNES for so long and yet I never got into the RPGs on that system. I look at it and think, "Man, the era of the Super Nintendo was the golden age for RPGs." Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Link to the Past, Mario RPG, and of course, Chrono Trigger.
I was only 8 when it came out. I don't think I played it until '96 though. I remember it was around the time Donkey Kong Country 2 came out. '95 was truly a great year. Not only did we get the PSX and Saturn, but we got some great SNES games. Chrono Trigger, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi's Island.
ToxicNuclear Yes, The DS version is a perfect port. I would go as far as to say it's the best version out there. It's got quite a few little extra features you won't find elsewhere.
You have convinced me to go out and buy this game. It these comments are worth all of this effort, I should try the game myself to see what it's all about.
I got really excited when I saw Kevin did this one. I know exactly what you mean about the old cartridge thing, and that's actually why I got rid of all my SNES and N64 stuff. Chrono Trigger...is just so good. I first played it on an emulator. I really need to get it for my PS1. I've never seen the pro cutscenes.
I had this on my DS but it was stolen ages ago and I acquired a PS2 and the PS1 with FF VI was 9.99 new DS 40 used. Oh it looks fucking fantastic over AV cables on a modern TV.
to an experienced RPG player, yes it is relatively easy, but it is not short, the game had multiple possible endings. Once beat the game you'll know why it is rated as the best rpg/game of alltime (w/in 1st to 5th rank at the very least). the music was one of the best alone
Chrono Trigger is the most balanced game I ever played, for first timers it is can be challenging but passable. I never felt over or under leveld in the game,
They are all really good games. I don't like ranking those games.. I love alot of the FFs and I also love trigger. Gotta do chrono cross soon, that's a great game too.
Well like I said. I'm not going to argue with your opinion. It's yours to keep. But I'm one of the few who didn't flip upside down for it. I didn't experience anything you mentioned. Instead, aside from a few cute elements, I was bored. games like Chrono and Mana was more my taste. I think one of the faults I see in EB is the lack luster graphics. The little visualization cut scenes didn't cut it for me. I don't know, just not into it. :) Glad you like it though. Go play and beat it again.
I cant believe I missed this title in my childhood. I was a FF2 and FF3 fanatic. I dropped off after FF7 on PS1. I still have my original SNES from back then and it works. Now im off to ebay to find the cheapest one.
Loved this Sadly I had to wait a friggen 13 years just to play this masterpiece because I live in PAL territory and I guess I don't have to tell you how we were viciously denied from so many classic NES and SNES games that were masterpieces of Japanese anime style RPGs.
@jlwein05 it can be either. The etymology of 'Chrono' is rooted in the Greek 'Kronos', the pronunciation crow-nos is most likely a European bastardisation of the original term, so you can get away with using whichever you want.
I'm currently playing through this on Vita for the very first time. I can't express how fucking awesome this is to have on the go and I can't wait to play this every morning on my way to college haha
Hey man I have a vita and I'm thinking about picking it up. I've never played it before and as a classic rpg fan I feel like I should lol should I buy it?
I agree with ya, kevin, video games are indeed a way too young media. A lot of things still need to be changed in order to become a true form of art. I wonder how will it be 20 or 30 years in the future, if the revolution gaming truly deserves happens, people will be considering an absurd that, in some countries, a video game console would cost 4000 dollars (like in brazil), and how some games are exclusive to certain consoles. The gaming industry can be much more democratic, like movies.
@NEdelbach the ds version some differences in the text, a new (and mostly better) intareface, a few cutscenes, 2 extra areas, and a new, 14th, ending. overall it's the better version, unless you prefer playing the original, in the form it originally created.
People who say this game was a critically acclaimed hit and commercial success when it was released in 1995 obviously were not around then. The game was a dud and a flop sales wise from the day it was released and I know because I was around then and played video games and bought my SNES the day it was released in the U.S. There was a magazine back then put out by Nintendo called Nintendo Power. This magazine reviewed all the new games. Chrono Trigger was a Super Nintendo game and when it came out it wasn't even featured on the cover of Nintendo Power magazine. A game called Donkey Kong Country was on the cover. I bought Chrono Trigger the first day it was released at a Toys R Us store. There were only 3 people there before the store opened waiting to buy the game. For comparison when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Super Nintendo came out there was a line 2 blocks long outside that same Toys R Us to buy that game. Almost nobody played RPG's in the early to mid 90's when those games came out for the Super Nintendo. I remember a guy who worked in the video game dept. of a Toys R Us telling me the games which sold the least were Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 and Secret of Mana. I remember large stacks of those games in the original boxes behind the counter in the display case unsold. And no difference at the Captron World of Nintendo stores which were in malls and sold SNES games. The manager of the local Captron store told me that Chrono Trigger was the poorest selling Super Nintendo game ever. He said he hated when Nintendo released another RPG because he said almost no one bought games like Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire. He said the only game in that genre that ever sold any was Legend of Zelda Link To The Past and it was just an average seller and no big deal. I understand Chrono Trigger was a big hit in Japan for the Super Famicom but here the game was a dud and a flop and sold next to nothing. I know the game sold poorly because a few years later game stores had used SNES games for sale cheap and the used games were for sale as carts but Chrono Trigger was for sale sealed in original box which means there were a lot of unsold new sealed copies of that game out there. In 1996 after the SNES went out there were tons of sealed box Chrono Triggers for sale at used game stores for $5 or less and no one bought them. Also there was no merchandise for the game released in the U.S. when the game came out in 1995 . Which shows Nintendo did not care to promote the game here. No trading cards, shirts, posters, figures, nothing. The popular SNES games had various merchandise released along with the games. Chrono Trigger had nothing.
Yet like Secret of Mana, and the Final Fantasy games, the cult following would come later, when the RPG craze really took off, and a lot of RPG's started skyrocketing in value. A lot of RPG's sell for more than they are worth these days, and as a collector of games for both 16 bit consoles, the Game Boy, the NES, the Sega Master System, the PS1, and the Sega Saturn, it is very disheartening. Shmups are another genre no one really cared about back in those days as well, and that is another genre where prices exploded on a lot of shmups. And this game here, along with the overrated Earthbound (yeah I don't like this one, but CT is great) are some of the highest priced for the genre for the SNES.
Most of the game's original copies were sold in Japan. It sold around 2 million units, one of the best selling RPGs on the console. As for critical acclaim, just read the contemporary reviews.
:') I love this game... I played it once as a kid (a kid who didn't speak English) and didn't really get much of the story, in fact I beat lavos very early.. I replayed it a couple of weeks ago and really, my mind was blown
@@homersams9015 Ouch, the prices for the cart versions. The PS1 version may have load times, but have fun spending $100+ for the DS version now complete, or $500+ for the SNES version loose. Jessica spent her money smartly, and got an excellent game for her money.
I booth this game yesterday!!!! And it really is amazing!!! But !!! But it's only amazing to those who are mindful of classic RPGs!! But this game has done things that some RPGs are bearly doing now
The first time I beat this game I thought it was overrated. I got the first ending according to the DS version. Now that I beat it for the second time, I'm sold, it's truly one of the best RPG's of all time; even if I got the same ending with some minor variations.
Maybe it would be better that you followed the walkthroughs since I don't remember the complete story; but I think you're supposed to go to Lucca's house and then to 600 AD through the portal in Leene's Square.
i really should sit down and play this thru. last time i tried played it i was just annoyed by the final fantasy mechanics. not every rpg needs to be like final fantasy!
Okay, if there's anyone who would still comment on this video, I have some questions. I have NEVER PLAYED THIS GAME BEFORE. I BARELY PLAY RPGs. I've never played a Final Fantasy game (the closest I ever came to this was with the Theathrhythm demos). I have played Pokemon, but that's about as far as my experience goes with JRPGs. This appears to be an excellent game, but before I consider purchasing it I would like to ask: 1. Is it good on the DS? 2. How accessible is this game for beginners? 3. Do characters die easily? If the player gets attached to a specific character, but lacks experience with this genre, how likely is that character to die?
I have the SNES cartridge and it seems like I'm really lucky I do because it's selling for around 150.00 on ebay. Hands down my all time fav game. I'm with you in that I've never played a single FF. In fact I don't even like RPGs all that much. only this one for some weird reason. While the battles aren't terribly hard even for beginners I still think you will be challenged on the initial play through (esp if you don't play many RPGs) because so much of the game relies on you talking to locals in order to figure out where to go or how to beat a boss. You'll probably see your characters dying in battle pretty often in the early part of the game. That can be tough because once one of your guys goes down, I've found it to be a pain to get him/her revived and get you back in a good battle rhythm. But my fav thing about the game is that it never stops being fun, not even after you've beaten it again and again and seen every ending. I've been playing it since I was 10 and I still enjoy it. Oh and once you're finally done having fun with this one, download the flames of eternity rom hack....the chrono trigger sequel square didn't want anyone to play.
I suggest you to buy this only for collecting purposes. It's higly expensive and only serious ppl "can" own it. It cost me (with near mint condition) about 400eur.
Tohab Also the FF Chronology collection for the Playstation is very nice as well, you can also get just the Chrono Trigger on the PSN as well.I would say the DS version is probably my less favorite, but that's because the translation is a bit different, it's closer to the original Japanese. But I would say that is a very minor point and really just a matter of taste. They are all very good games.
I just thought of something: If the guy who drew Dragonball made the art for the Chrono Trigger characters, do they or their portraits have pixels added to their hair every time they level up? XD
well chrono isnt the greatest thing in the world, but it is a little unique and is made by some great people: toriyama (of dragon ball and dragon quest) for the art, nobuo uematsu (of final fantasy) for the music, and yuji horii ( of dragon quest) and Hironobu Sakaguchi (of final fantasy) made the game
@benace75 This game is like a mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy. It's the greatest RPG of AlL TIME in my opinion. Final Fantasy VII comes second. You'll regret not checking this game out ASAP.
@@Bloodreign1 time consuming I’m a bit nuts as I have multiple machines of RPGs games and never play any of them 3ds, GameCube and snes I’m so overwhelmed I don’t play any of them and end up on 3ds animal crossing lol 🙈 I’m 40 and at full time work so can’t stay on all day to misses would never have it lol
People say this game isnt rare but most people say that 2mil sold but how many of those where snes versions?also they are talking about super famicom version too and that version is not as rare at all as snes release.
Playing threw CT for my first time and i'm about 7hrs in. This game is so epic, i can't put it down
I just started playing this on the DS a few days ago, and I can testify that it is as good as people say it is!

My all time favorite game. I've recently started collecting SNES carts, and this is at the top of my wishlist. Until then, I'll replay it on my Wii.
Hey! I'm a kid, and this is my favorite game of all time! I tend not to follow trends...
A few years back I picked this game up for $15....Best $15 I've ever spent.
Nice! I got my SNES copy for $40 a couple years ago (totally worth it!) good thing now the prices are up to like $80 used.
Simon Nagriff
Got the Playstation version for 12$! BEAT THAT, INTERNET!
If you're an RPG gamer, this is one game you should not miss playing by any means!!! One of if not the best games in my opinion
This is the greatest game ever made.
I reccomend the DS version. It's cheaper, has anime cutscenes and no loading times.
I had this on my DS but it was stolen ages ago and I acquired a PS2 and the PS1 with FF VI was 9.99 new DS 40 used. Oh it looks fucking fantastic over AV cables on a modern TV.
It’s good but the SNES version is still my favorite. The music blaring on some CRT speakers is glorious
Used to have this game and loved it. Never beat it but now have it on my emulators so now is the time to finish tjis bad boy after all these years.
Which is better FFVI or this?, and how difficult those games are?, maybe compared to FFVII
I'd put CT ahead

BEST VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME!! HANDS DOWN
I just bought this game. Waiting for it's arrival at my doorstep this Tuesday! Just $3.99.
The shipping fee, that is.
Whats the engine used in this and Black Sigil? I love it.
Playing it now in 2013 for the first time. It´s not the best game I´ve ever played, but hell it´s so close to that title!
Loved this

YES!!!!!! I think it is the best RPG of all time. I actually bought the game twice just to get the anime cutscenes and to support square.
@jlwein05 it can be either. The etymology of 'Chrono' is rooted in the Greek 'Kronos', the pronunciation crow-nos is most likely a European bastardisation of the original term, so you can get away with using whichever you want.

I like this guy... He's more mellow than the other guy who seems like he's always yelling. I don't say that to be a dick. It just is what it is..
@NEdelbach there are some minor differences in text, and the ds has a better interface. so i would recommend the ds version.
I really liked the DS version of this, that's probably the best port. Easilly the greatest RPG ever made.
I can't even dream of owning a loose copy of this !!
I really can't decide what my favorite game is either this or ff7 or mass effect series. All so epic!
Also available on the PlayStation TV as a ps1 classic, great game

Can you play this game on Playstation 3? I really want to know!
+pinball pipsqueak that's not a stupid question since he can.
damn chrono trigger is timeless this game will always be beast shit.
@benace75 This game is like a mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy. It's the greatest RPG of AlL TIME in my opinion. Final Fantasy VII comes second. You'll regret not checking this game out ASAP.
Can’t decide which to play this or ff6.
Why not both?
