Marcus, I can't thank you enough. I have 4000 photos to edit, scale the size, color correct, etc. and then put in separate folders and rename adding a prefix for the negative file page number. I've was doing it by hand for about 1200 before I thought to search for a way to bulk rename, and found you. Didn't know such a thing was possible and this program is incredible! Now I can rename of folder of 36 photos in a few seconds. Only 3,000 more to go! Thanks again.
Same here. I do lots of timelapse work that can involve 1000s of files. Sometimes, I forget to reset the frame counter on the camera which means the camera creates a new folder and resets the sequence after 9999. The rename software has saved me many boring and tedious hours of renaming. There is a learning curve but well worth the effort.
Great video... Was playing with this program for one hour and achieved nothing after watching this and doing the tasks in step with the video all done... Thanks.

Marcus - Very helpful video in 2022! I recently discovered Bulk Rename Utility and it's no wonder your video came up on the first page of YT. Well made video! Do you have any tip on organizing 10 years worth of phone, GoPro, Drone and DSLR photography mixed together? Most videos on UA-cam are about file naming, organizing, or bulk renaming files from a photo shoot which is easy. But what about managing photos that aren't related and to make them easy to reference?
Tough to do after the fact thousands of files with different content. Can take forever to view and rename and tag. What is best is perception of person organizing and content and how it is used. Photos best to use tagging to make searchable. Photos I usually use YYYY~MM-DD~Event name-0001 and put in folder with same structure. I may add drone in structure so I have way to find versus ground shots. Then add tags such as 2021 Corvette, John Smith, Red, Mississippi River. Video is tough. Pretty much for video folder or file name needs to contain keyword. Or use other software to catalog video. I loved Picasa for tagging photos until they killed it. Mainly liked for tagging people names as it detected faces. Can tag in Windows explorer multiple photos with same keyword at same time. Anyways Perhaps bulk rename to get photos to have consistent structure and folders is good place to start. I always use year/month/day so when sorted they are all in order by date.
@@MarcusGlass Google really dropped the ball when they retired Picasa. I love the file naming system you proposed care. Simple, searchable, and easy to remember. Thanks again!
@@MarcusGlass I think the best way to move forward, and I write this for anybody reading, is to First drag and drop all of my pictures and videos into relevant folders. If you only want to change names of files which have HigHDef at end of file name, in Filters(12), use mask of *highdef.mp4 , then click the mouse in a different field for filter to be applied This assumes of course the files you want to change all end with "HighDef.MP4" . If they have a variety of extensions then "HighDef." may work with period, as long as no other files have file names where "HighDef." appears earlier in the file name.
How can we search through all folder trees and chop off enough characters in relevant files to adhere to 260 character limit fot long file names in windows?
In Filters (12) check the folder box. If you want to rename subfolders also check subfolder box. Then in left upper navigation menu select the folder containing the folders you want to rename. Then in main window select all the folders you want to rename. Then configure specific sections 1-9 as needed to get desired change of folder names.
Hi Marcus - hope you are well. Any thoughts on why when I import files it will not keep them in sequence... example: the file name is "testpage-1" testpage-10" "testpage-100" "testpage-11" "testpage-12" until it gets to the twenties, then it's "testpage-2" "testpage-20" "testpage-21" etc. same for thirties, fourties In the actual file it's numbered correctly and in the proper order so I'm curious if you have any thoughts on why it's doing this? Thx - Dewey
It has to do with how the code in some programs is written to sort. Some are written to have natural sorting and others alphabetical sorting. If the program you use to view files does not have option to control how they are sorted when viewed what can you do? To ensure numbers always be in sequence by quantity value in both sorting methods requires padding in all programs all numbers with zeroes. If the highest number in sequence is 9999 all numbers need to be expressed as 0001-9999 rather than 1-9999. In file rename when change names, select pad. If highest number is two digits pad 2. If five digits pad with 5 digits. The numbers will all have that many digits so will sort by lowest number to highest in programs regardless of what sorting method the program uses en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_sort_order
Hi. I’m wondering if you can advise how I would rename 30 files. They are named “masterday” and I would like to name them in date format with Day at the end, one for each day of the month. . For example the format would be “01-10-21 Day”, “02-10-21 Day”, “03-10-21 Day” and so on. I’ve been told this can do it but the options are overwhelming.
Hard to impossible for me to advise without knowledge of file names and types of files, and where the date is originating. If reading date from actual file (exif , date modified, date created, ETC ) look at "Auto Date" function and set modem to Prefix, Set Type to what date is being read from file, (date created, date modified, date accessed data taken), set format to Custom, set custom to value such as "%m-%d-%y. Then user "Remove" to remove characters in current file name via remove first (n) characters and use "Add" Suffix to add the file name to appear after the data. Of course keep in mind if this is only 30 files , if it is taking you two hours to research how to do it in Bulk Rename Utility you should consider just manually naming them. if it is 100s or 1000s of files then worthwhile to figure out what options are needed in Bulk Rename.
This appears to be exactly what I need... however....what if the current filenames are not the same number of characters? Some of the files in my folder are 4 characters, other files are 10 or more characters. Can I remove all characters, (obviously there would no longer be an 'extension' in the file name) not sure if that will cause a problem? Or can I simply remove all characters, and then within the Add section use the Suffix field to add .jpg? Thank you!!
By the Rename icon in application hit reset to clear all prior settings, To remove all characters of all files in folder, select all files in the folder, in Remove (5) section under "First n" hit the up arrow higher and higher until the "New Name" field reflects none of the files having a name, or just put a value in like 50 if the most characters a file has is 50. Then use other fields to create whatever new name you want to give the files
@@MarcusGlass Great, I will give that a try tonight. Thank you!! One last question. Does it matter if the folder contains different file types? Some of the photos in my folder are a variety of .jpg, .tiff, .heic and .png files. Is there a different process to rename those different file types? (not interested in keeping file-types batched together, just want all files to be given an new/better naming scheme) Thanks again!

I have two problems, the first is that the option of "bulk reneme here" does not appear when I press the right-click button. The second is that when I open the program and choose a folder, it orders the files wrong, that is, it gives me, for example, the number 7 after 50 even though it says that it is ordered by name. Please help me as soon as possible.
For integration in explorer did you reboot after installing? A little quirk of Windows and every application is sort occurs on a character by character basis. So 7 does comes after 5 as 7 is higher than 5. So use padding when renaming in bulk rename. So 7 must be 07 as 07 does come before 50 as 0 is before 5. If other programs did not number with padding prior to use of bulk rename that is not fault of bulk rename. To overcome in bulk rename sort maybe by date created if that puts files in order they were created then number them on export with padding.
Portable versions dont include the option to "Bulk Rename Here", but its very easy to create your own using regedit. Installer versions will include it as an "option" during installation. To sort files numerically before renaming, use: DisplayOptions / Sorting / LogicalSorting.
This app is for Windows. There may be similar apps for Android. I have not used any though. Here is one I located (I have not used it) but seems like it might be OK? www.makeuseof.com/how-to-organize-files-on-android/#:~:text=Tap%20on%20the%20folder%20containing,rename%20menu%20should%20come%20up.
Thank you for this shortcut! It's saving me so much time. There's something I'm trying to do that I can't quite figure out. If I have a file named as us0d-3456 and want it to be us0d-0003456 how do I get those leading zeros after the hyphen? I have thousands of files that have anywhere from 4-6 digits that I need them all to have exactly 7 digits using leading zeros... Thank you!
That is not a problem. 1. Open folder with files in Bulk Rename Utility. 2. Select files. 3. In extension field (11) Select "Fixed". 4. To the right of "Fixed" type the new extension file name. 5. Select "Rename" 6. Select OK.

Thank you!
I love you
IF only I could find the stupid button to extract Exif data.. but nooo..
i want edit file extention for multiple files
That is not a problem. 1. Open folder with files in Bulk Rename Utility. 2. Select files. 3. In extension field (11) Select "Fixed". 4. To the right of "Fixed" type the new extension file name. 5. Select "Rename" 6. Select OK.
takes forever to hit the point
