  • In this video I show you a reason why cheap ratcheting bar clamps fail. The problem I incurred was purely poor engineering and design. You will see what I came up with to fix the problem.

Very good work! The problem I'm having is different, the clamp doesn't tighten hard enough, the bar snaps back, which isn't supposed to happen...

Replace the plastic trigger pivot with a steel machine screw while you are in there. That will break next.

Cool fix. My clamps have not failed yet, but I'm keeping this fix in my hip pocket! 😁

The one I have wont convert back from a spreader to a bar clamp, the bar seems stuck in one position

Those are harbor freight. I bought some of those a decade ago. They broke on first use - all of them. I just took them apart, threw most of it out, and kept the steel/springs for projects.

Nice improvement, no need to throw them away.

Chinese engineering is often about group think and saving face taking precedence over critical design feedback and testing. It's "git er done" gone wild.

Plus most products from cheap china are made/built by children & teens. Which are not usually paid (basically slaves). Course it's illegal in other countries to do that but not china. That's part of the reason I hate china so much.

I got an even cheaper one & it works fine. But it's metal & doesn't have a handle, you just push it (kinda gotta push it hard), which I think is actually even better. It's stronger that way. Plus it has a tightener at the end to make it extra tight.
Great for beginners (which I am) & for light to medium work. 🙂 Not the best for hard work or professionals but again, it is cheap but it's a good start. NEVER BUY PLASTIC TOOLS!! Or any tool that has plastic it/on it.

A very nice fix! Based on the round label with two part numbers, I would guess that the clamps are from Harbor Freight.

That’s what I think too. The number didn’t pop up anything on their site, so I figured they’re one of their discontinued item numbers.

These are the older model (orange trigger) HBF quick-trigger clamps.

They have a 5 year warranty. If you bought it at Walmart return it for an exchange or refund.

They came from Harbor Freight. 90 day warranty

Seems to me an easier way to add a trigger stop would be to just superglue a small block of plastic inside, rather than go through all the work of drilling. Would be less risky, too, since you could dissolve the superglue with acetone if you put the block in the wrong place, whereas the drilled hole is irreversible.

To each their own. Literally take 30 seconds to drill hole and stick a bolt in. It’s just cheap plastic in a $1 clamp.
