Oof😂👍
I oversaw a whole fleet of around 16 caravans that had 80-120k on them. Almost never a CEL. None ever had an engine transmission problem. I don't think Scottys assessment of the Caravan is weighted for the no. of vehicles.
@@BearfootBob i mean the thing is you see a lot of caravans with 150k, 180k but you never see them with 300K unless its highway mileage like that guy in canada with 1M KM (600 something thousand) usually around the 200k mark the engine blows or the transmission tends to go out. He compares them to the sienna, and if we go by a quality perspective, the sienna will drive to the moon and back while the dodge will probably go upstate before the starter goes out.
@@Pharium no argument there. my argument is that if as many Siennas sold as do Caravans, there would be more Siennas in repair shops than there are now, which would affect the perception of durability. The Toyota is still the better vehicle, but the perception of the Caravan is also affected by its sheer numbers.

@@NSDflug Hahaa sheesh I guess I am blessed because in Cali no inspections haha !! If so you can pay someone off for a smoke check which isn’t required unless you sell or buy a old car
Inspections are a scam. Old school mafia tactics made for the new age.

Or a county , city. There are some in California
But they said they dont do emissions in Tennessee
I had that code and took Scotty’s advice and used AT205 on the gas cap gasket and that fixed the problem. Thanks, Scotty. You saved me a bunch of $$$$$. Merry Christmas from Western NC.

Out here in California, we have a place for people who spoof their emissions systems. Just change the EGR valve! No big deal! So you don't make oxides of nitrogen... has nuthin to do with lowering hydrocarbon flow into the cat converter. THANKS SCOTTY. Your tip on changing the failing vacuum tube couplings is excellent... and topical.
I fixed my first car’s vacuum hoses with electrical tap in the parking lot of the testing center and got it to pass ... it was an 84 chevette
An "electrical tap" is a solenoid-operated valve. Most people don't carry spares for their washing machine nor fit them to cars, so well done.
Aye man my dad had one of those. It was a POS. It barely could make it up the bridge
I missed the part about the illegal mode unless it's pulling off the evap test knob out of the system.
i would like there to be at least a lable so the next owner who might want to do that themselfs can still safely find the right hose.
@@naotamf1588 If there's a "next owner" of that POS Caravan, they're going to need more than labels to help them.
Caravan must be driven by a teen. Brought it in with an empty gas tank 🤣

I keep my car always above the 1/4 line, partly because I live on a hill and don't want all the fuel to go to the back and leave the pump dry xD
@@Brandon-uy1uv If you live on a hill your only need enough gas to get back home, as you can coast to where you want to go initially.
the freaking baine of all techs, people dropping off cars with no gass!!!!
You all do know there are some adults who can’t afford to fill a gas tank
A non functioning egr will also increase fuel dilution in your oil when you idle. The egr raises temperature in the cylinders making the rings seal properly. With out it at low idle they cool down to low and the ring will leak enough that gas gets in the oil. Most will evaporate out and will not diatroy engine bearing, but will reduce the oil life and require changing sooner.
SC. Love your energy.
FYI: EGR is to control NOx, not HC. Inert exhaust recirculates to lower combustion temp. Also, disabled EGR system can result in pinging in some cars -- especially older CHRYSLERS. Finally, back-pressure type EGR valves do not respond to hand vacuum pumps. Cheers.
Would u still have a vac connection?
@@Brian-jz1pi: If you are asking if backpressure EGR valves (bpEGRv) still use a vacuum hose to make exhaust circulate, then the answer is "YES". The bpEGRv has a vent valve that seals-in or releases vacuum from main diaphragm's vacuum chamber. The vent valve is sensitive to TINY amounts of positive pressure in exhaust system. During normal operation, when the engine is under load, the vent valve closes due to backpressure in exhaust system, allowing vacuum in control hose to act upon the bpEGRv's main diaphragm, and pull it open. Not enough backpressure is created during light load to close the vent valve, thus the vacuum bleeds off to atmosphere instead of pulling on main diaphragm.
@@hightttech Thank you.I think I ran across this once I don't remember what vehicle I was working on but it acted strange when I was seeing if it worked.ill keep this in mind when working with EGR's.
Merry Christmas Scotty
You know what they say about Christmas.. it'll cost you a small fortune.
christmas is pagan
I will never, never understand why people bring their vehicles to a mechanic low on fuel, or with the low fuel lamp on
Probably for the same reason they don’t do maintenance.
People with not much money don't want to fill the tank if the car can't be fixed.
Except when you need to drop the tank it’ll be filled to the top.
There's been cases where some dodgy mechanics take their customer's cars out for a joyride unnecessarily without their permission. Also from my own personal experience, I once handed in a car to a mechanic with atleast half a tank full, and it got returned back to me empty
as a former tech, the only time someone would have a full tank, is when you has to drop the gas tank for a fuel pump.

Getting a smoke pump for finding vacuum/oil/ intake gasket leaks made me so excited. It works amazing and will save you inane hours of searching for leaks.
Some good hints here, thanks. I think the EGR system is to reduce oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust. Nothing to do with hydrocarbons, they are destroyed in the catalytic converter.
My father had a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan and we had to drive about 20 minutes to get it to pass the emissions inspection. We got rid of the van in 2009 as it was failing apart.
well, for most cars you need to drive them around prior to taking an emissions test, to get the cat warmed up

Yeah but that way makes the least amount of money.
Just had a "huh, that makes sense" moment with my 96 saturn.
Kentucky has no vehicle inspections. God Bless Kentucky. I once flunked a N.J. inspection because my blue high beam indicator light on my dashboard did not light up. I had to take a day off work to flunk the inspection, another day off to get it repaired as I had to pull the entire dashboard, and another day off work to get it re-inspected. Then they failed it because my washer fluid "empty" light was on even though I had a full amount of washer fluid. Had to go through all of it again. N.J. sucks. I am glad I left 30 years ago.
Any tips for growing a small channel?

My check engine light keeps coming on in my old Bonneville and I pull over, open the hood the engine is still there. I do have a little computer like you have and as soon as it warms up, I'll have to plug it in and see what's going on. Nice to have that little computer for these older vehicles.
You need between 1/4 & 3/4 fuel in the tank for the EVAP readiness to set. Under 1/4 or over 3/4 and the PCM will not run the test.
They do seem to take their sweet time about it even when you drive around at 1/2 tank.
You can reset the codes by disconnecting the battery terminals for at least five minutes.
It probably lose your radio stations to.
Doesn't work with OBDII. The light may go off in the dash but the codes are stored until a duty cycle is performed at which point it will come back on. Speaking from experience here.
@@zonacrs Anybody consider unplugging the lights, if the smog nazis just go by them? Check your fluids & tires yourself.
@@elultimo102 If you live somewhere they don't actually plug into the OBDII port for smog checks that works out ok. Unfortunately I do not. The 2 largest counties in my state actually plug into OBDII or sniff check cars less than 30 years old. And yes I check my own fluids and tires.
Spray some penetrating fluid in the vacuum line and on the pintle,
then tap lightly to maybe free a stuck EGR.
Evap codes on Caravans.... some states have very simple emissions test, as in all they care is that the light is off, and that their tool can command it on and off. Check your emission rules. Then reset the code with a full tank and don't let it drop below 85% full, and get the inspection while your light is off.

Not all caravans have egr valves. I know the 2005 sxt version we had didn't. Got 15 years, over 340k miles out of it before the engine blew!
Where’s the illegal mod?!
The only "modification" I saw was when Scotty removed the EVAP test port (green thing hose plugged into) as it now won't pass visual inspections in many areas without it.
EGR doesn't lower hydrocarbon emissions. It's there to reintroduce exhaust gases in to the combustion chamber to keep combustion temperatures from getting too hot, which causes the nitrogen to react and create NOX.The EGR system is there to reduce NOX emissions.
While you're under the hood already and you know that EGR valve is going to have to be replaced go ahead and shoot all the bolts with some PB Blaster or Kroil or something similar so it can be soaking in for a few days while the customer is driving around resetting the codes.
It might make the difference between a clean repair and cussing at broken bolts.
