2012 'There are a lot of components to this game'. 2022 Gloomhaven 'Hold my glass'! Years ago I bought this game for my then teenage son. We spent hours playing it. Just bought myself a mint condition copy yesterday for nostalgia and hopefully get my wife into this one too. Loved this game, warts and all. The art work is beautiful. The minatures are superb. I love the whole Hell Boy - esque vibe of this game. Would love FFG to relaunch this.
Wouldn't it be easier to count low rolls as hits? Example: Your stat is 4. Instead of saying "10-4=6. Rolls of 6 or higher count"; say "rolls of 4 or lower count." Just consider 10 as 0 (which also makes more sense on a traditional D10. Is it so hard to add a 1 next to the 0?) and the math is the same.
I bought my copy during the transition between rule sets. Contacted FF about it and they refused to send me the new rules. I told them I just purchased the game and could provide a receipt from the store. They said I had to buy a new PDF rulebook, or pay for a nice hardcopy from them. They pretty much said "tough luck". Very dissapointed that you have/had to pay for revised rules to a game. I could understand it for a hardcopy, but a PDF version should be free on the website.
@tehgr8supa, Tannhauser is an exception to the PDF "update" rules being available via any legitimate sites. Fantasy Flight sees the revised rules as a distinct SKU (product) and charges $9.95 for it, period. In an old forum thread, they claimed the development time that produced the changes was too large to make them available for free.
I know the feel, I used to happily collect Warhammer 40K until I got squezzed like a lemon by Games Workshop :( Re: Tannhauser: On the upside players can ger a a fairly sufficient summary of the new rules by folks who've kindly posted them up on a number of forums. I just ran a google search 'Tanhausser rule changes" and printed them out. Cost app 20c in paper and ink. Happy enough with that!
So you can take 4 items but you can only choose from groups of 3 items? Or can I take one from "stamina" pack and other from another group? I would love less dice and game say 5+ instead of 10-5 (is there a point to it?) but the game does look beautiful and seems very polished.
@thegreatchimp, I happen to agree: the game got poor to middling reviews *because* of the version 1 rules. They really decided to signal to their customers just how they felt about the suckers who bought first edition and frankly it cooled my interest in all Fantasy Flight games by an entire level. Now instead of "must buy" I put everything they make into "wait to see if they want to squeeze the customer for being loyal".
for your next review, you might want to explain right at the beginning the theme and goal of the game, instead of assuming the viewers are already about the different factions and characters in the game.
yeah 2012 they say if you get all the expansions you can invest 200-300 usd in it, right now the base game costs a lot and some of the expensions are like a 100 usd so...sad thats it OOP :(
My problem regarding the updated rules is FFG are happy to take the money for a broken game so when a fix is available regardless of wether it was not all there fault,they supplied it they should support there customers thats what there QA department are supposed to be for!!!!!!
I think you rate it too low. The game is incredibly unique and does provide a great game (especially with the Fog of War). It is a very successful combination of miniatures and board game; it is easily moddable, and the mythos and theme that surrounds it really immerses the player into the game. Even with my disagreement with you, still a great review of the game.

they have been using connectors now, they should put some on those player sheets

Bad business policy IMO. Why make customers unhappily pay $10, at the risk of alienating them from buying future products priced at at $30 or $40?
That's pretty bad on them. I'd turn to torrents in the like, for this case.
