How to Paint Sweet Peas for Beginners | Easy Tutorial to Master Loose Watercolor Flower Painting
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 тра 2022
- Pretty Sweet Peas are everyone’s favorite, whether you’re a gardener, flower arranger or artist, and as well as being beautiful they have a lovely scent. In fact, in French they are called Pois de Senteur or “scented peas”.
So today I’ve picked three colors - Cobalt Blue, Permanent Rose and Sap Green, along with my Staedtler pigment liner, and we’re doing some loose flowers sharpened up with ink drawing.

Diane, you make me smile with your art work and laugh at your funny comments. Thank you for being a great artist!
Oh thank you!
Dear Diane…Been watching you for a little while….enjoying your beautiful spirit and your outlook….so pleasant. Thanks so very much for sharing your time with us….you’re a blessing….❤️🐝
I have to say that I do like the effect of the paint on the arches paper better .
You are a star. The pen and ink rescued my sweet peas. Thanks!
I love the one on hot press paper. Soooo pretty
i am so glad to hear you say all of this about Arches paper. everyone raves about it on youtube and I have the hardest time using it. If you have troubles I feel much better...lol
Yes, it is not ideal for beginners and definitely too expensive to practice on!
Very sweet indeed. A favorite.
Arthur is having great fun in the tree, but it sounds like the resident squirrel not happy about his visit!❤️
I just love your art Diane!
Thank you for sharing your paint accident. I don't know how many times I have to go wash myself. LOL. Thank you for keeping it real.
So soft and gentle…these are lovely!
Thank you! 😊
Very interesting comparison of the papers. I have tried several times to create a piece of art as demonstrated only to be disappointed with the result as I have not used the same paper. Will keep trying.
Lovely simple way to paint the sweet peas, and I love your comments your real....I usually get paint where I shouldn't. Thank you
Thanks so much 😊
Love the softness of these ❤❤❤!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much for commenting!
It’s always interesting to learn how different flowers are painted, which gives the appearance/feel of the flower, but may differ a bit from the exact image. These are lovely, like cotton balls.
another fab painting... thank you.
Wieder mal wunderschön ❤🎉❤🎉❤
Vielen Dank!
I love sweet peas. April my birth month flower. Lovely paintings Diane.
Happy birthday!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thank You.
I really enjoy your simple yet whimsical art. It’s about as much as I want to do with watercolor as I’m primarily using acrylic paints.
I had fun with this today! Thank you for the sketch!
You are so welcome!
Just lovely, thank you
My149th. Sweet peas sounds like sweet peace😅. Certainly worth it to grow , you can give it its own place in the vegatable garden but it lookes very nice just as a climbing blooming plant in your regular garden, it finds its way in whatever taller plant, bush.😊wim
Sigh, I was doing a paint along for the colorful birds and I saw this in your intro and just had to look at it... I'll put this video in the next pile. I think it's the perfect painting for a color mixing exercise I'm doing... I can get all the different shades of purple from a more bluish purple to the more pink on one page. ❤
Lovely both ways. ❤
Arthur! He's so cute. It was interesting to see the different results in the two papers.
Great seeing the difference between the two papers. And, that each has its own best uses. I've felt pressured to use only Arches / high quality paper which for this beginner has put me off from "playing". You've changed that. Thank you!
I'm really glad about that Deb. As a learner you need to paint LOADS of paintings and on a variety of inexpensive paper - that is going to teach you much more than having a couple of sheets of Arches that give you palpitations when you look at it (my case!)
Will do a card for my daughter s birthday, May 29! Thank you for this video!
I love sweet peas.
I was doing a paint Along on Whimsy and birds and this painting was in the intro... I had to come and check it out. I think it's perfect because I'm doing some color mixing in these shades so it will be good practice and double as a swatch chart.
Loved both
😄 That made me giggle about talking to yourself for an hour ! Sounds like my luck ☺️ Loved this lesson !!
Still watching and learning from Tennessee ! Thank you for your channel !!
I tend to struggle with Arches paper. I use Bee watercolor a lot. This was a great tutorial. Thank you!!
I have heard of Bee but I can't get it over here. I believe it is good paper.
Birthday flower of May is Lily of the Valley but these are very pretty too.
I have been doing pages of these in my cheap dollar store sketchbook! When I get stressed out about paper I reach for this book. Its only 60 lbs but I can do light paintings like this on both sides. When I need to warm up, I tell myself its only 5 cents a sheet! So you just can't go wrong! These sweet peas are addictive! Thanks Diane.
Loved painting these. Thank you so much for sharing💞
Love watching your videos, only wish I could do it. Annette x
Haaaa, Arthur, oh love him! Doing a bit of as we call it “Orniffology”!
Exactly!!!
ou are so good at this. I'm impressed every time I watch a video
You’re too kind ❤️
I just love it! NY
Lovely Diane 😍
Just back again, Binge Watching 💖
Welcome back!
Again a nice video. I promised you to watch a video every day and give a comment . I started after your video about UA-cam troubles. Lucky me there are so many waiting to be watched. Nice cat you catched on video. Keep your spirit going . Thanks Wim from holland
Hi Wim and thanks so much for your promise! I hope it won’t be too burdensome! I really appreciate your support, it means a great deal to us! Thanks again xxxxxxx
What a nice pledge! It sounds like a win-win proposition. My watching seems to go in spurts, but I'll comment when I can.
Brilliant !
I found your watercolor site not to long ago and I really do enjoy your teaching method… very relaxed.. you are funny too!!! Thanks so very much
“Don’t know what you’re doing”??
I beg to differ with you!!!❤️
Sweet Peas, one of my favourite flowers, they smell great and are so delicate!
Yes they are!
Diane, this is beautiful! I was searching your channel site to see if you had a tutorial on Sweet Peas and walaaa....here it is! A family member has an April birthday and I was researching birth month flowers and it looks like the daisy and sweet pea are both April flowers. I'll be giving this a go and I will also attempt the daisy on your daisy tutorial. Thank you.
Sweet peas are a beautiful ..delicate petals & lovely fragrance..ink goes so well the blooms
I love this!! Trying both papers, so interesting!!
Yay! Thank you!
Gorgeous Dianne, you really caught the essence of the delicate sweet pea….. hope to try this for my sister’s 70th Bday card. Love your adventurous cat 🐈🌸🐈🌸👏👏
I love sweet peas! Your style of painting and chatting while doing so is just so so nice. I appreciate how you show us the differences on different papers. They both were beautiful! Thank you so much!
Susan in Az.♥️🌵
Thank you so much 😀
Love the abstract and inking together!!
Another one of my favorite flowers. Your amazing!
Thanks so much for this. As a new painter, this is valuable information regarding hot vs cold press. There are so many videos that recommend cold press and Arches paper. But seeing the results today, it seems the freedom of the hot press allows quick results. I suppose it's a matter of experimenting but that gets a bit expensive so this video is useful. Lastly, I really love the paint and pen style as it has such character. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful! You are right, Arches is really expensive, allows lots of alterations and is ideal for wet in wet or layers. But not at all necessary for quick sketches and light paintings.
Very interesting to see the difference in the paper. Sweet Peas are really beautiful and you captured them perfectly, love them, thank you 😊
I agreed with you penny 😊
I love these sweet peas! Many reviews of Arches praise it for how much water it can hold. I find that to be true; for me, as a beginner, that makes it very unforgiving. For wet in wet, with a lot of water, it flows beautifully. If I painted your sweet peas on Arches, it’s almost immediately to late to add a dab of darker color at the base of the flower as it will be drying so quickly. I’m experimenting with other brands to find something easier for me to work with. Thanks for the encouragement that it may not just be my beginner lack of ability! Today I’ll curse the paper for a change. 😎
Yes, Arches is not really meant for beginners!! I recommend Bockingford or Strathmore amongst others!
Lovely! I just sketched sweet peas in a vase this week and then painted them. Now I’m going to try doing some your way.
Such a lovely end result on the hot press paper. I’ve been avoiding it so far but will now brave it and see if I can produce anything as beautiful as your sweet peas. Thanks as always for your inspiration. 😁🙏
You're welcome Lucy!
Love sweet peas and it's amazing to see the difference in the papers! I love Arches but it's interesting to see how the hot pressed paper really did a lot of the work - I never would have realized! Kate (the Last Homely House) is amazing - she does a lot of quilting - something I don't think I could do!
I totally agree! I love Arches too, it has a special feel to it which nothing else matches. But I also find it a bit demanding. It can soak up a lot of the pigment, meaning you need lots of layers whereas hot press lets the color sit on the surface more. No, I couldn't quilt either - haven't got enough time or patience!
Beautiful, love them!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for sharing..really interesting to see how the different paper affects the painting ☺️
How beautiful!!! This will be my little project tomorrow, thank you for the video. Yes, amazing what difference the results give on different paper. Thank you for sharing Diane 💜🌸
Have fun! Thanks for your comment Maria x
Big difference in the paper. I’m a beginner and started by using really cheap paper, paints and brushes and was very disheartened by the results. I was just about to give up when I found your channel and you have made a big difference in how I look at watercolours. I’m now using better quality products and following your “beginner quick and easy tutorials” and enjoying them immensely and feel I’m improving each day. Thank you so much for the time and dedication you put in to your channel.
Thanks so much Marnie for your wonderful comment. It means so much to me and Tamsin when we receive a message like yours, which makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside! SO VERY GLAD you are enjoying watercolors now, and hope that you continue to have fun on the journey. Best wishes and hugs, Diane and Tamsin.
Beautiful❤
Beautiful great job👍
Simply beautiful 😍
Thank you for sharing
👍😊
Thank you, especially interesting to see the difference in the paper and how it altered the way the paint reacted. Also love your comment that as a beginner it is best to paint lots and not be worried about your paper too much xx
Excellent video! I really appreciate the Arches paper demo. I have not been able to afford the Arches paper that I so coveted, now I have scratched it off my list and am actually glad I never purchased it.
Glad it was helpful! I don't think it helps beginners to get confident, it's great when you are more used to water control etc. Have fun!
I love the sweet peas.
That's been one of my daughters' nickname for years. She loves the flowers too.
I know what I'll do for her birthday card next time.
The thing I like about Arches is how relaxed I feel when I use it. There's no rush, and I have plenty of time to develop my painting. However, it does take a little time getting used to after using other papers.
Love this tutorial!
Thank you!!
Such a beautiful painting, Diane! I am going to try these. Thank so much! ❤️
Thanks Madeleine!
I like the Arches picture better. You seem to have better control with the curls. The stems, flowers and leaves to are nicer. Yes definitely better!
Thank you!
Thank you Thank you! Exactly what I wanted
Thank you too!
I enjoyed that one. Many thanks Diane. I use Arches Hot press for botanical and semi-loose flowers and Arches Cold press for everything else. However, for just ordinary practice I use Canson cold press water colour paper and an Etches sketch book. Much cheaper.
Sounds great! That’s a good compromise!
Beautiful - I love this piece - I’m definitely going to try this❤️
Thanks Sharon, have fun!
It was really interesting to see the difference between the paper types! I love the painting on the non-Arches paper.
It did turn out quite well! I wish I knew which hot press it was. I had a gift of a lot of paper from a friend who gave up painting that wasn't labelled - he has now died so no way to find out :(
I really love this painting, thanks for again a great tutorial Diane! 😘
Thanks so much 😊
Oh absolutely beautiful! I have a week off next week, so many things to try, cats, hens and sweet peas! Thank you so much, Gallo is on my Birthday/Xmas list, they are close so for the first time in decades I want a joint present lol!
Have fun and I hope you create many mini masterpieces!
I did this one in my multi media sketch book and then on 140 lb paper - I love ink and used it on sketch book but not sure whether to use it on quality paper - it’s a lovely tutorial enjoyed as always - thanks diane
Wonderful! I don't think ink should be kept away from good paper. Especially if you are using a quality artists ink xx
Hi Diane! I found this lesson again because I needed help. I just lost my 13 year old, hand raised, calico cat named d Sweetpea. She was my best friend and I wanted to paint a picture in her honor.
Thank you!❤️
Oh no! So sorry to hear that Posie. We've got five cats and they are all such individual characters, it's always so very hard when you lose a real friend in an animal, I'm so sad for you. Hope the sweetpeas helped a little xxx
@@DianeAntoneStudio thank you Diane. Didn’t mean to bring everyone down, but my reason for posting is that art heals! If we can work through the grief by painting, it helps so much. I have two more feline friends that make life so much richer. I have Arthur’s twin, Sugar. She must help (?) with all painting sessions!
You have become a dear friend Diane, through this new world of the technology of today. For that I am grateful.❤️
@@posiesutton2009 that’s what we are here for, Posey, to support each other when we have a loss. I’m worried about one of my dogs at the moment, who is losing his coat for no apparent reason and who yesterday was violently sick with diarrhoea, which is not like him. We had him neutered about six months ago at the age of seven and I’m praying that this was not a bad decision after many years of agonising over whether or not to have it done. If it turns out that he dies an early death because of what I decided to do it will be hard to take. Animals are our children, aren’t they. Can be a great joy, can be a great sorrow.
@@DianeAntoneStudio oh Diane, I can’t see how being neutered so many months ago to the cause. Can he possibly be developing an allergy to something? My Sweetpea, I learned after the fact had cancer. Don’t know how. But I worried that maybe it was something I did wrong hand bottle feeding she and 2 siblings 13 years ago! She was an absolute indoor kitty. Coyotes got their mother when they were 10 days old. So not allowing an in and/or outside life. They are very well cared for…spoiled rotten (which is my pleasure). I buy wheat fresh wheat grass from produce dept., hopefully to give them what they need. Your precious pup and you are in my prayers and thoughts. I don’t think there is anything harder than a sick or hurt animal. They give us so much. Pleeeeze do not blame yourself! Could he have eaten something outside? I wish you love and support.❤️
@@DianeAntoneStudio another thought.. do you have snakes? His symptoms are similar to one we had years ago bitten by a snake???❤️
How easily you make a blob of paint into a flower. I really liked this one. It's different/cool.
Diane you could do a good watercolour painting on a hessian bag! 🇦🇺
Maybe I'll try that sometime!
💕💕💕🤗🌷🌷🌷
Thank you again Diane. SO love the delicate colours. As a beginner I wonder if you would kindly answer how you do such simple brush strokes and create something magical - I just don't know how to do that. is there a technique or is it the brush? Thank you.
Thanks so much for your kind comments. I wish I could have you beside me to show you what I do, but essentially it’s about getting the water right in relation to the paint x
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thank you. I'll keep practising :) And follow your lovely flower paintings
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge, however it would be more beneficial to beginners to explain the techniques, water amount shapes, etc have a great day!
If you have specific questions, I’m more than happy to answer them! Hope you have a great day too.
😍😍😍🍀🍀🍀🌹🌹🌹
Thanks!
I just wanted to thank you for all of your work. It's a lot to put a video out. I always appreciate watching and following along.
Thanks so much - I watched some of your work too!
Oh thanks so much, I hadn't seen the donation. Really appreciate that. It has been a truly epic work project to get this channel where it is. I could not have done it without my daughter who is about 75% of the channel, unseen, and my loyal band of subs and viewers. Thanks again and good luck with your channel x
@watercolorpaintingintheaft9142 Very nice. I didn't notice you had a channel until Diane mentioned it in the comment... it looks fun, I've subscribed. I have a huge mixed media book and I'm trying to paint something every day. Most days, I only have a few minutes, so I'm always looking for some fun little thing to do.
Do you have any instructional lessons for a true beginner? Like what brush to use and how to make strokes.
I've been trying (very hard) to find the time that you go live. As you''re in Europe, I know it's probably about 8 hours earlier than I am, but I'm a night person, and I would really like to know.
Sorry Christine, we don't do lives yet. But we put our videos up at 5pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, that's 5pm GMT Hope this helps, thanks for your support!
I've been watching a few of your videos lately and i notice that you don't tape down your paper. Most watercolor artists i watch do... Is there a reason? Just love this painting. I hope to give it a try..
Hi Deb, thanks for your comments, I often do tape down, but this painting didn't need a lot of water, or a lot of work, so I didn't bother. If I need to do a lot of wet work, or go to the edges, I usually stretch my paper. Hope this helps! Have fun!
Can I ask please which is your favourite paper to use ?.
It does depend on what I'm painting to be honest. I do like Arches when I'm doing wet-in-wet, landscapes and larger flowers for example. I like Bockingford and Etival for everyday practice and odds and ends. Those are cold-press. I like hot-press by anyone for florals like this one. Hope that helps x
@@DianeAntoneStudio In the States, Bockingford and Etival are both more expensive or similar in price to Arches, which is much easier to get. Anyone know of a less expensive option here? I've tried Canson XLWatercolor paper which is much cheaper and had less than great results. Perhaps I need to try a different style on each like you did Diane!
@@pennythedomelady I cut my watercolor teeth on Arches and struggle with every less expensive paper I've tried. So far, I like Canson watercolor paper the least and do a bit better with Fabriano, Strathmore and Grumbacher. I get better results, though, with Bee and Canson mixed media papers as long as I don't use much water since they are thinner papers.
@@Sandy-yd6ot Thanks Sandy!
Are you standing up to paint ?
I don't remember, but it's quite possible.
