- A Swedish man puts out an ad for his used Saab with the headline: "Saab 9-5 estate: you will regret buying it" where he lists all the problems with his old car. The ad becomes an instant hit and gets hundreds of thousands of views. So, what happened next with the car? Here's a film about it!
I recently purchased my 30th Saab, a 2004 9-5 Aero... I am 36 years old. In highschool I used to buy saab 9000's, do the brakes/exhaust/ball joints then give it a good detail and sell them. I have driven them as my daily drivers since I was 16 years old. 3 SPG's, 4 9000 Aero's, and I am n my 3rd 9-5 Aero. I still have my first 88' SPG, my 93 Eucalyptus Green 9000 Aero and an 03 and 04 9-5 Aero. If only people in the USA knew how special these cars are and will be in the future.. Being older now, I do not have the time to do the work on them like I used to but I will never let them go. My family knows that if I pass away, to sit me in my saab... dig a big hole with a backhoe and bury me in it, left hand on the wheel and right on the shifter... so 1000 years from now, someone will find a skeleton with a smile on it's face sitting comfortably in Aero seats.. for eternity!
supafrancis used to have 9-5 Aero bud the body was rusted inside and it had no chance...unfortunately...but I loved it so much.
Now got 9000 with dead engine but really nice body soo can’t drive it yet.
What do you think of it compared to 9-5 aero?

Beautiful! I’m 30 years old and live in the U.S and I own an ‘06 Saab Aero 9-3 2.8 Turbo. I absolutely LOVE LOVE my car! I’ve owned a TON of vehicles and I’ve never felt the connection with any of them that I feel with my Saab! It’s a feeling you can’t really describe in words, it’s something that can only be experienced by owning one! Cheers brother!

Bought first Saab 96 V-4 in 1972 brand new for $2737. Kept it until 2000. Sold it for $2000. In the meantime bought a new 900 in 1990, then a 9000 then a 9-5 Wagon, then a 9-3 Vector, then a 9-3 Aero and another one 3 years later. In 2008 I bought a 9-3 Turbo-X 6 speed manual that's been trouble free for a decade. GREAT CAR and FAST! Visited factory in 2011 just as Saab launched new 9-5. Makes me puke knowing Saab went under and Volvo continues on..... oh well. There ll are whiners complaining about everything. Screw 'em. Saabs were/are great cars. NOTHING holds up as well or is as safe....

I bought my 2001 9-5 seven years ago. Never had problems with the availability of parts.
This summer, a garage let me down so my wife and I had to do some work on the car ourselves (take out ABS control unit and put back in after remanufacturing, re-wire computer display, fix aircon flap motor). For most of these jobs we found excellent how to-vids on youtube (esp. Trionic7 and ericthecarguy - you are briiliant!) and practical information on Saab drivers' portals.
So though the maker is dead, we hope we can still keep ours alive for a long time...
I bought a 2001 9-5 wagon with 210k miles as a personal challenge: Buy a car under $2000 and one I have never driven or repaired. I replaced over $2500 in original parts and did much of the work myself. I love my Saab and plan to keep it until it's no longer in one piece.
Aaron Hammett I bought a 2002 9-5 Linear Sportcombi for $1900. A week later the factory turbo blew, and the EVAP system and TWICE unit went out.
But I adore this car, so of course I spent the cash, and she's running like a champion 💚

Freshkryp69 But why though? The B234/5 is a solid engine, and the Aero's engine can do 500hp on stock internals.
Tom E b235r wont do 500 bhp on stock internals, 310/320 max and 450nm anything more you either need to forge it or b234 bottom end
This car was not maintained at all. I owned a 2006 Saab 9-3 and took careful care of it (like all of my cars). Nothing needed replacement over 170,000 besides the alternator and rubber parts which needed to be replaced like on all cars. It only failed at 174,000 this year because a tree fell on it. It took a tree to kill my Saab, they are not horrible cars (at least, mine was not).

Here in Sweden there are lots of spare parts.
There are still craftsmen out there who not only take pride in their work they are quite good at it. This is an example of that work ethic.
I can't match supafrancis below, but I have a Saab and there is no other car in its price range that I would prefer to have.
I used to have Alfa Romeos, love the glue on the corners, but then one day I looked at a Saab Aero for sale, I only looked because i was handy to the place and bored.
Once I drove it I wouldn't give it back, got the guy to come to the bank with me and made it mine.
Now here we are 9 years later, still have that car, plus 3 more Saabs, a 2001 wagon, a 2001 Linear sedan, a 2005 linear (with Aero turbo and ECU) and a 2005 Aero, mapped and lowered.
I wave goodbye to Audi V8s at the lights and say so long to mPorches on the open road.
You will never see me in a Japanese car, you will never see me in anything other than a Saab.
Hmm.....my 2003 9-5 2.4 with 215,000 miles has been one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned...and for a four cylinder turbo, it still surprises me how quick it is....but I fell for Saab when I test drove a 1985 900 turbo sedan ....still want that one.

My 9-5 2.3T Died on me - I was almost about to go out and buy a band new KIA. With their 7 year warrenty it sounds apealling.
But nah - I've decided to do the work it requires and replace the engine with another 2.3T ofc.
KIA's 7 year warranty requires you to make THEIR maintain service like every 6 months or so. It's just another scam, suddenly a cheap KIA costs more than a decent "real car". 9-3 Aero here.
It's VERY hard to appreciate a different make of car after a Saab.

I have a saab 9-3 2007 and in have never had any problems at all till this day love my saab to death. If my car dies I'm simply buying another saab I just love them.
Legendary Dark Knight Dante i have one and didnt replace the water pump after it hit 100k and blew the head now trying to fix it , cheap part to replace too late now . Cooling failings are number one issue with saabs

Just another Saab story....but on a serious note. My most favorite vehicle I have owned yet and believe me I've owned a bunch of different cars.
If someone would buy the company and start manufacturing saabs again I would just focus on the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 line from before 2003 and just focus on solutions for most common problem areas.

Trevor Stover Someone did, named it NEVS because Saab trademark is owned by the aircraft company, hired most of Trollhatten back, and is starting production of the 9-3 as an electric vehicle for Chinese fleet sales and sales in Sweden. If they’re successful, we could see more but electric only at this point. Google it.
Cool. I have a 2006 95 Aero Combi in fusion blue and I LOVE IT! It's only got 126,000km on it and had 71,400km when I bought it in 2013. I change the oil every 5,000km and it runs beautifully.
I have a SAAB 9-3 which I am in now. Awesome build quality and great drive plis solid and very safe. Air bags all around and the engine is so quiet. This firm were just too good and did not want yo rip customers off which done them in.

My father game me his Saab 9-5 Aero and it drives amazing. Everything about the car is perfect. I believe in if you treat ur car like shit it will do you no good. You're just an ungrateful owner. I'll be getting a 2011 9-5 sometime in 2017.

Ida your dad is the man and a good man. I own one 1999 9-5 3.0T SE is a nice comfortable fast car when taken care of they are good cars. Good video to inspire others to keep saabs on the road.

proper maintenance - your vehicle should work fine. you can take s class and if not maintain it, will be as homer simpson car. if there is aquarium into front lights this is the owner shame, cos he s blowzy. man who don t respect his bycicle, car and wife is real jerk. If I am this gentleman, would not show up on TV, will be hidding somewhere. This is shame. SAAB ROCKS! In your face GM!!!!
I'm glad they fixed the car but ive never seen à Saab as shabby. they shouldn't be blaming the car, the state its in is simply down to owner neglect. I inherited my dad's 1999 2.0t saloon it exhibits none of the problems of this one.

If I was looking for a family saloon today Personnaly I wouldn't buy a new car I'd find a second hand Saab...
My grandma had a 9-5 that never broke down. The only time it quit was when it was dunked into a deep puddle on accident and that was the final moments of that reliable car

My 2002 9-5 aero (250hp-180kw) just keeps failing me but i cant let it go it's too precious . Its metallic silver color and it just looks so nice . Comfratable seats. Had to swap the engine cuz the oil rings were worn out and then one day the engine just blew . Now it has a 2008 aero engine in it still 184 kw . Runs great . But the vacum lines keep breaking. Just yesterday the coolant to the engine hose broke leaving me stranded. But after all of the drama the car still feels smooth easy to drive and exiting.have a few pics of it on my insta @kevvumann

I owned a 1997 900s for ten years. Trouble free. I owned a 2006 95 wagon with the Turbo V6 that I purchased as a certified used Saab with 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. I kept the car one year because every month it needed to return to the dealer service department. When the turbo blew up on the V6 I decided it was time to trade. As a member of the Saab Owners Club the 95 was a disheartening experience.
My '99 is pretty much the same way - nothing major. but all the little things breaking will make you die a death of a 1000 cuts.
Fix it if it's MoT stuff, the rest you just learn to live without.

I've had my 2003 2.2 tdi 9-5 for 7 1/2 years, now with 160K miles and she's still going strong. I was told 30k miles ago that I need a new fuel pump. I still haven't found one to match the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I has to drive her within the limits!

Anyone know where to get a replacement fuel tank for a 1999 Saab 9-5?? I don't think they make them anymore and the 1999 models fuel tank do crack eventually resulting in the dreaded evaporation code. Any ideas short of taking the old one down sealing it and re-installing?

Funny! I own a green wagon just like this one! 20 years old and still runs. Im not the original owner and have put a little money into the car but I do as much maintenance as I can myself and I am NOT a mechanic. Some things like changing oil are unbelievable easy and can be done in 10 minutes in a Walmart parking lot, other things makes you scream SAAB why the fuck did you place the thermostat there! But I love my Saab and it still looks great style wise after 20 years cant say the same for alot of American cars!!
Like I’ve always said, you have to be a little tough to own a Saab. But worth the pain.

I wish I could afford to repair my 2000 9-5. I love the car, but just a new turbo, with me installing it would be about $400 USD. Not counting the other issues with it. Ill just drive it until it is dead. It has 188,346 miles on it.

SAABS owned - 1997 900 S (137k miles), 1999 9-5 SE (189k), 2000 Viggen (147k), 2001 9-5 SE V6 (162k), 2006 9-3 (179k). They're great cars, yeah some electrical gremlins here and there, but pre-GM 2003 are rock solid motors. Blame GM after 03, not SAAB. GM bought the brand and destroyed it. My viggen is tuned, and will blow the doors off of most brand new cars today.
The early 9-5 models had major engine issues with sludge, oil leaks, etc due to the badly designed PCV system, so they were hardly "rock solid". There are tons of retarded design choices that make the car's maintenance way more of a pain than it should be. Even changing something as basic as an interior air filter is like pulling teeth.

The involvement of GM actually improved Saab's overall build-quality and reliability, particularly with the introduction of the GM Ecotec 2.0T which was Saab-tuned but suffered none of the sludge issues and other flaws that the previous B204/B205 and B234/B355 motors suffered from. And the sludge issues were a major problem with those motors and MANY of them had to be rebuilt or replaced because of it. The GM Ecotec-based 2.0T was essentially better in every way and was a very solid motor with the exception of the timing chain tensioner.

Saabs aren't expensive to get parts for, but they absolutely need a lot of maintenance. My 1999 9-5 left me stranded in the middle of rush hour traffic on a major road. It was because of a fuel pump failure (one of many, many common issues with these cars).
Overall the car is enjoyable enough to drive, but I must say it's not the most pleasant thing to wrench on.
AlDim000 Funny you should mention that, my Saab 9-5 Aero wagon recently left me stranded on the far South side of the city due to a failed slave cylinder. I do all of my own mechanical work on the car and this slave cylinder job is a big one. The good thing is that there are tons of tutorials online for the shade tree mechanic. I also had my fuel pump motor fail, but when the fuel pump failed, the car was still in its parking spot. They are superb highway cars and fun to drive.

Saabs from the GM age...better get an older one. Even tho the ones from the 90's are probably better than their GM equivalent (that being the Opel Astra or the Cavalier/Vectra).

I would rather have a 900 16 valve turbo. The last of the great Saab line. It all went down hill from there.

My Volvo 850 is 25 years - has none of the problems this Saab has. Putting $$$ in it is a nice advertisement for the parts suppliers but who is going to do that on their own budget?

These cars are not reliable. Little egg shell motors that break if you don't baby the thing. Chevy's Caddy's Dodges and Pontiac's that never needed timing chains or head gaskets or transmissions. Now I'm on my third egg shell car cause I like the looks of them. But I just can't keep flushing money down these rolling toilets on wheels . SAAB : 'S'omethings 'A'lmost 'A'lways 'B'roken I can see this love affair coming to an end soon. Electrical problems, ? Never had one in 35 years till I got into SAAB's
My advice to a person getting their first car, Don't get one if you like the looks of it, or ,if you don't have a lot of money to spend. There are plenty of fish in the sea that will treat you better than these unreliable money grubbing back stabbing bitches.
I used to work in the car industry in Canada. I am telling you straight that the least reliable, worst built, and least technologically advanced cars are from the USA. They're awful.
