Tony, thank you so much for the effort you put into your quality videos! I value your expertise regarding the selection of a Frontier sawmill. I began the process of mortising and tenoning of very large eastern white pine timbers last summer for the construction of an 18'x24' timberframe pavilion to go over a future pizza oven. (You can check it out on my channel that I'll link at the end of this note.) Despite my every intention, incessant rain in New Hampshire has virtually shut me down. Even if I can restart now, I've really got insufficient time remaining before winter shuts me down again. Not only is the wood likely to rot over another winter, we won't be having pizza!
Praying about this dilemma brought me to a revelation. We went out to eat last night and were dining under a screened in shed with 38" wainscoted walls. Sitting there, I suddenly realized that I'll simply mill those big timbers into dimensional lumber and build a conventional screened in room on the deck, with enough wood for the floor. With no concerns about dropping a timber onto the oven, I can get working on that, pronto. So, I Googled portable band saw mills and immediately found your wonderful channel, which I subscribed, of course.
My question is simple. Having now used both the OS21 and OS18, do you recommend the OS18? Other than perhaps getting a set of rail extenders, size difference is not a consideration for me, as the largest timbers I will be milling are 8"x12" rough sawn Eastern White Pine. I will likely sell the saw when the job is complete, so storage or size is not a concern, either. If you know anyone in the market for a barely used like-new Makita chain mortiser at a great price, made for the US market with US labeling, let me know.
    God bless.

Both sawmills are about equal in how they work. I would not buy the OS18 without the extension kit. It will hardly cut an eight feet long board. It boils down to which size tree you will be cutting. If you have long skinny trees, you can get by with the OS18 and track extensions. If you get into larger logs, the OS23 is considerably beefier. No matter what, order your extension with the first purchase. The shipping cost will be so much less. P.S. You have turned me on to Sketchup. Tony

@@TonysTractorAdventure I appreciate your helpful reply, Tony! Yes, I'll almost surely get two extension kits with the OS18. I stared blankly at SketchUp when I first used it, having no idea what to do. Fortunately, UA-cam is loaded with help, which got me around the learning curve much quicker. It's quite amazing. After using the free on-line version for a short while, I soon decided to get the Pro desktop version. While the annual subscription is expensive, having your own files at hand provides much more peace of mind with important projects, and the tools are vastly more useful. Adapting to the several shortcut keys instead of clicking icons is vital for getting around efficiently.
Once again, it's raining, and six of the next ten days call for thunderstorms. I recall nothing like this, ever!
      God bless,
      Wayne

Recently started putting my OS18 together and this was very helpful. I got my Instruction Book handed to me by the forklift driver when I picked the mill up from the distributor.

Well sir, Now I think I'll buy one since I've seen it put together and run. I'm not worried about the smaller engine any more either. My logs will be smaller diameter pine that were all cut down by the forest service and left lay. Convienient for me to pick it up at the warehouse in my area and on the way to the build site which is lucky for me......Lucky for you to have a good helper.

I really like my OS31 but this little unit is spot on for a beginner that doesn't want to spend a lot getting started. I believe Norwood did them selves right with this one.

Tony I hope this suggestion will be helpful , get yourself notebook and some plastic sleeves and put all your paperwork into the sleeves before you start building your sawmill , this will keep everything clean and in order as you put your sawmill together

Thank you for sharing this, I am so glad they made one that is not so huge. I wanted to buy a sawmill I have a lot of land, a lot of trees and always doing build projects. I can.t move or prob even get the other models set up alone. This is the perfect size size.

    • @TonysTractorAdventure
      @TonysTractorAdventure  Рік тому

I agree. It will limit the log size to 18", but anything over 18" is hard to handle without help.

I noticed nothing was mentioned about the engine on this. For those who don't know, Lifan is the research and development company for Honda. That said, you get a quality engine on this.

Thank you so much for all your Frontier sawmill videos, especially the 0S18. Frontier just ran a 3-day Black Friday sale with 25% off, and I purchased the 0S18 in large part due to your videos. It will be a while till I get it, but I'm curious how short a log I can practically saw with this mill?

@@TonysTractorAdventure Sadly, you spend hours on content , equipment, research and editing in order to give your subscribers interesting video, and the ad service is bashing the site, which will eventually lead to less views- where your real money is at. It's a shame. You and many other have excellent channels being hijacked by ads that are run by people with no skin in the game. They're cashing in on your hard work.

What on earth made you buy a smaller mill, I would have thought you would have got a bigger & better than what you already have, as the old one seems a bit micky-mouse.

    • @TonysTractorAdventure

I appreciate your point of view, but you made an assumption. Who's to say I am not getting a bigger sawmill?

I would seriously consider this if the shipping wasn't $550.
