Im now 72, five years ago I had cataracts removed and had the inter-occular multi focal Tecnis Symfony lens procedure on both eyes. My close and distance vision is now fantastic! I do not need any other vision correction (contacts or eye glasses) and have been so impressed with the results. If your eyes are otherwise healthy aside from the cataracts, I heartily recommend inter-ocular implants!
Monofocal lens will give better distance vision. My distance and intermediate is excellent. Only need reading glasses for very close work. Multifocal lens can cause halos, lesser night vision, and distance vision not as good since splitting light with rings in lens. Very happy with monofocal lens. No multifocal lens can make your vision like it was when you were 18.
I am almost 60years old and don't have cataract, but I do like to to take my glass off so that it is much easier for me to do sport, espcially in winter. I don't know if I shall do or not.
Hello Dr, I had cataract surgery in my left eye this past Thursday. A multifocal lens was placed in Eye.. And now I am seeing the black crescent shape on the side of my eye. Can you tell me if this is going to be a permanent thing or would it disappear over time. Thank you for making this video

I'm post cataract Laser extraction - 3 wks. now from 10-10-18 ... I NOW see halos, rays from lights at nighttime driving - My unsurgical eye WITH cataract does NOT show rays, but the surgical with IOL ...NOW I see this. It didn't even start til 2 wks. after the surgery. How long will this last. Is it temporary or permanent? Also seeing 'bright lights' peripherally? I put this off for 20 yrs... only to get these results/ OMG. Did I pick the wrong dr. or maybe it is the wrong IOL? I believe I rec'd the multi-focal lens and he adjusted for astigmatism too. Thank YOU for this 'eye opener' video.... I think I learned more here than in my dr. office.

the only downside to "multifocus" is lens glare and halos at night driving. i believe it is recommended to wear anti-glare shades for driving at night.
I got my multi-focal IOLs 16 months ago. The halos etc. will always be there, but the brain adapts and learns to ignore them. The adaptation takes time. Don't judge the result until at least 6 months has passed. I can see the halos if I look for them, but otherwise I don't notice them anymore. It's just like listening to a single person in a crowd of talking people. The brain ignores everything except what you focus on. I am very happy with my multi-focal lenses. I never need glasses.
@puran singh I consider my vision as "perfect". I never need glasses, The halos etc are now natural to me and my brain ignores/removes them. It's like when many people talk at the same time. It is quite easy for the brain to focus one one person and ignore the rest. For the vision, my brain focuses on what I want to see and ignores the side-effects.
Why can't the lens function like the natural one? Having rings means a reduced surface area for light to come through that you want to focus on - this is a hack, not a solution!
