As scary as that was the captain knew what to do and acted quickly. Considering a ship like that doesn’t stop fast, momentum makes it hard to stop. Thank god no damage was done to the ship or wall. Accident can happen so give him a break. Just like car accidents happen. I’m assuming that bang when she was backing up was the anchor being brought back up? She’s a beautiful gentle giant, a veteran serving the lakes. Many years of service and still going.
I was standing below the bridge on the north pier on 8/17/88 when Bijelo Polje got caught in high wind and currents and slammed into the newly remodeled pier. She also dropped anchors, but it was too late and she struck anyway. The sight of that massive bow heading straight at me was enough to make me run for safety.
I didn't see any bow thruster logos painted on the sides near the bow. It must be hard to maneuver a ship of that length through the various canals and locks without thrusters
People don’t realize what it takes to turn a vessel of that size. There was a cross wind. It appears that vessel was not equipped with a bow thruster. Superior can even have tidal currents. This vessel is not the first to have difficulties with that turn.
Before passing a comment that doesn't make any sense in this case, you should know what you’re talking about, there are no pilots on the Lakers that go in and out of Duluth, it’s the captain that’s in control of the ship, and in any case, French Canadian pilots are some of the smartest in the business, as their piloting involves the lower Saint Lawrence river, the most difficult rivers to navigate, and another point to make, the wheelsman takes his orders from the captain, so in this case the Captain is, and should be entirely to blame.
Unlikely. The ship was traveling too fast for the bow thruster to be of any use in turning the boat. It looks like the crew started it up as a last resort to try and make the turn. I believe the ship came in at too sharp of an angle, too fast, and simply could not make the turn. If you look at the beginning of the video, the ship passes the turning buoy to port, when it should be on the starboard side. That is a big tip off that she is too close to the canal prior to making the 90 degree turn.
Love how the crowd stood still like halfwits instead of doing the smart thing, without being told to MOVE AWAY FROM THE SHIP. These are the people always on the news crying about their loved one drowning, or being crushed. It's culling of the herd.
This happens from time to time and with many ships that go through the harbor. Winds, currents, malfunctions, many different things can cause this to happen. It's been many, many years since a ship missed the turn and ended up crashing into a pier or doing any damage.
I believe the bridge says "Down on the piers, I want you to go inside. You folks need to move back away from the piers." I'm also very happy that nothing bad came out of this. From my vantage point it looked like she very well could have hit the pier (in fact, when she dropped her anchor I thought she had hit the canal). Thanks, I'm glad you like the video. I though the music was quite fitting and matches the mood of the video perfectly. :-)
I noticed absolutely no one even moved when they announced Please get back from the ship. People even began to come from other places to see what was happening. Looks like they even had kids with them. Then they will wonder why the kids do not pay any attention.
Some people disregard signs of any type.. it's there for their own safety. They think it's for everyone else! I think the Captain did an excellent job averting what could have been a horrible tragedy!
I think the Captain just has a Piloting Skill issue because she ran aground in the Holland Channel so there must a little something to the Piloting of that Vessel.
Arkangel Productions Sometimes people need to die for being stupid. Maybe then people will realize it's not a freaking joke when they're told back up off the peer!

Awesome video, the music fits perfectly. She is a beautiful ship
Great video. I just saw her last month steaming out of Whitefish Bay heading for the open lake. Good looking ship.

I'll bet the crew was glad to get out of there! She is moving really fast as she leaves.
Nice ambient music. Builds tension with the boat. Great video.
A Masterpiece . Nicely done.
beautiful boat!

you are right on the cross winds, but there was a rudder failure, and she was too fast for bow thruster( which she does have )
This is a really cool video! Just FYI, that red and white morse A buoy isn't a "turning buoy," it's just a safe water mark.

"Oh Magoo, you've done it again!"

Please move back from the Pier! Everybody runs onto it. Boatnerds!
Dan Vaught That's y people need to die sometimes.
those weren't boat nerds, those were idiot tourists.

I ment on the other video i herd the CG say something to her but it was hard to make out!

Nice music to go with the views!😀
Captain had too many beers over in Supe Town
cool... very nice job editing this together.
Could use some yard time for new paint.
Interesting that it is a safe water buoy, since I see ships on both sides of it.
So they messed up, fixed right side then blasted outta there. I live this new thing I found. I want to move there....

Looks like She's loaded; coming into Duluth loaded?
Nice video!!
Helmsman and Capt cleared the bridge after she was through the canal so they could change underwear 🙄
Wow! That is not something any ship watcher needs to see. I'm so glad she didn't hit the pier. There is no telling who could have been killed.

It's great to have buoys but you ought to look at that big slot you need to go thru.
For aFresh Water Vessel it sure is Rusted up some.
I never fully realized how beautiful she is.
bow thruster malfunction?
That was my first thought.
I'm flashing back on the line from movie "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming"; "Emairgency, emairgency, everyone to get from street!"
Stupid people! People these days! You can't tell them anything! And the if something happens, oh boo hoo, Iam going to sue!
Oops She's leaving, I must be loaded.
Surprised the CG didn't go after him!
No reason too.
THANKS
