Semi Abandoned Town In Nevada Desert - Creepy Buildings, Abandoned Cars & More

- Driving between Las Vegas and Reno Nevada on Hwy 95, you come across the strange little semi - abandoned town of Goldfield. I often wonder what people do for a living here because really, there is pretty much nothing around for miles. This spooky town is very close to the infamous and kinda creepy Area 51. Abandoned cars in the streets and yards, abandoned homes, storage containers out in the open, deserted buildings, closed businesses all boarded up...it just seems so weird when you come from a large city environment! We LOVE it though...it's so unique! Just one of the many crazy sights you'll come across exploring the Nevada desert...truly...there is nothing quite like it! ~Kenneth King Bear
your bigoted comments , general lack of knowledge and out right erroneos statements ruined what could have been an interesting viddy
1. Town is not abandoned and it's nowhere near area 51. (100+ miles)
2. Joshua trees, not bristlecones.
3. Once Nevăda's largest city (20k - 30k)
4. Site of longest world title fight and one of the first to be filmed.
5. Hotel hosted the wealthy elite and had the first Otis elevator west of the Mississippi.
6. Wyatt Earp worked as a pit boss for Tex Rickard in a local saloon. (Rickard founded the New York Rangers and owned M.S.G.)
7. Virgil Earp died in Goldfield from pneumonia while working as deputy marshal.
There's actually a lot of interesting history in this old town.
"2. Joshua trees, not bristlecones." Yeah, I noticed that too !
Video by someone that doesn't even stop in town but decides it's creepy.
wow
1.29 cool van
I would love to go there just to find an actual truth of a history... You know quite a bit about this place
I like towns like this! they are fun to visit , but you gotta stop & talk to the locals. most of them have some good stories on how they ended up in towns like these..
Hi and thanks Terry! Ya...on many occasions we have stopped and talked to folks over the years. Always meeting interesting people! Never get tired of exploring the desert. Take care. ~Ken
+Desert King Travel & Adventure do a video where you investigate all these ghost towns you go. To
+Desert King Travel & Adventure Great video. I flew from Chicago to Vegas yesterday and I just decided to drive to tonopah, goldfield, Rachel and Manhattan tomorrow. Heard tonopah is great for star gazing. Any suggestions? This is my first time coming to Nevada.
madhukollu
came to the right place madukollu! personal, one of the 'darkest places' around is between Beatty, nev & death valley on top of 'daylight' pass.. {google it}.. you can turn a full 360 deg & not see one light of anykind... last time I was there, it was a moonless night & the only way you could see your hand was to hold it up to the millions of stars! have a great time! BTW, beatty is a great place to stay, a good jumping off point to visit death valley, etc.
You should of gone to the car forest
When I drove through Nevada and Idaho I saw numerous towns like this, and some were even more barren than this video. It made me wonder what are the income/economic resources for these kind of people. Surely they’re not all on welfare. And even if they were, these towns seem to have no stores or hospitals. Just mind boggling how some people live like that
They will survive the collapse
Good points. I often wonder the same even in the UK we have some pretty remote places, and think how do they make a living ?
Before cars phones and super markets there were people
I live in Goldfield from May through October each year. There is nothing creepy about it, except the ghosts in the hotel and high school. There are 350 residents and it is a lively and fun place. There are no bristlecone pine trees; what you passed at :43 are Joshua trees. The monument to the Gans-Nelson fight is not located where the fight actually took place. You missed the court house building, which is beautiful inside, with Tiffany lamps, etc. There is a ball and chain on the floor in the Sheriff's office there. You also missed completely the International Car Forest, another tourist attraction at the south end of town. You also missed the gold mining district completely and Alkali Hot Spring completely. Area 51 is nowhere near Goldfield. Nellis Air Force Base is next to Goldfield, but Area 51 is very far away, it is close to Rachel, Nevada.
Nellis is in Las Vegas...

I love your little town. Drove threw there a few times but last time finally stoped and checked it out. I'm going to try and be there during goldfield days.
phsycopiano if you want to go to a creepy town I recommend silver peak
Jeremy Fufushnick
Silver peak? I'll deffenetly check it out. Thanks
I was just there for Goldfield days. I'll be buying property up there soon and hopefully live there one day.
I don't know why, but i love creepy towns.

Oh my God that crackling noise is driving me nuts
Those were not Bristlecone Pine Trees, they were Joshua Trees. Bristlecone Pines grow at a much higher elevation.
Why did "fake news" seem to best describe this video? Ignorance is not bliss.
hard to believe someone can mistake a Joshua tree for a brsitlecone pine...
well , this bozo is blissful enough to laugh at his own "jokes" i got a whole raft of his vids. suggested , all creepy........desperate bid for clicks and yeah , bristlecone....you'd think he'd be embarrassed enough to take it down @@williamneumann7288
@e james Yes I read Joshua trees only grow about 1 inch per year. So do the math on some of those trees. They were around back in the days of Blondie and Tuco in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, ha ha.
Good for you. You saved me from posting that those are Joshua Trees.
That's my kinda town. I wouldn't mind being Mayor there. Just kick back and relax with a/c
of course and watch for an occasional UFO or two. lol
Same here. I could ride my 150cc scooter up and down the roads all I wanted without worrying about traffic! ; ) FUN

100 years ago Goldfield was the largest town in Nevada... and the Goldfield Hotel which is still there, was the largest hotel in the whole state, most of the town was destroyed by fire many many decades ago, there is a movie called vanishing point and parts of the movie was filmed in Goldfield and at the Goldfield Hotel
Thanks for the reference to Vanishing Point. If I see it again I'll keep Goldfield in mind.
very cool this video! anyway what s so strange about this plaçe ?! anyone ever seen a ufo in this place?

I worked at a goldmine here in the late 1980s. There is HUGE amounts of gold left. Just redoing the tailings netted over 30 oz of gold per ton in the clay. I also drank a lot of beers at the Green Parrot. Don't let looks deceive you.
I loved the Parrot. The guy who owned it died, left it to his son (my boyfriend at the time). The son didn't know anything about owning a business...bye-bye Parrot.

I actually think that looks a good place to live, away from all the city crime. I can imagine if you are nice to people, they will be nice with you.
I grew up in Fallon, north of Reno. Have you heard of the mostly abandoned town in Nevada called Wabuska? Our family found that town when I was young. The few people that were there in a old bar were really strange. We got out of there quick!
Fallon is not north of Reno. Are you sure you lived there?
@@karlaberg2209 Goodness yes. Is Fallon west of Reno? Whatever...are you sure you are talking about Nevada?
@@davidcopperfield-notthemag397 hahaha I said that wrong didn't I. I meant east. Sorry.
good video, but the snide comments and veiled putdowns of the locals are not needed. i would rather live in one of these towns than new york, chicago, or los angeles any day. most of the problems come from "tourists" who run their mouths, make smart ass comments and then wonder why they get their ass kicked. these are good people who don't have a lot of money and get by the best way they can. they are friendly and open until you piss them off. i would rather be standing in one of these towns on main street at 2am then anywhere in the above cities i mentioned..i would be safer. and, most of the population is armed because emergency services are slow or non-existant. keep the videos coming but drop the smart assed comments.
very true!
Yet in your own comment you show your own contempt and disregard for the cities you mentioned. Charles, you might want to take your own advice before trying to give it out to anyone else.
Charles was just stating a fact!
So big shot you think that you are the only one who can do that.
Charles, small towns are mean and nasty. You're a dumb-fuck yankee talkin out your ass.
Small towns in the middle of no where usally have old cars and very old buildings
Omg I love this it's so old fashioned and looks like where McQueen met sally
According to Wikipedia, it’s an unincorporated community, that “While the unoccupied buildings of the town remain an attraction, they are not abandoned. Each building has an owner, many with plans to renovate the property. In addition, the Goldfield Days festival is held in August each year. The festival includes parades, booths, historical displays, and a land auction.” So no secret, it’s still in use and no it’s not “too secret.”

What you indicated as Brisle Cone Pine Trees were Joshua Trees. It is important to get your facts straight, otherwise your information is unreliable and should altogether be disregarded.
Notice the cars were all over 30 years old.

I would speculate on high levels of radiation from nuke testing maybe?
Spooky. I'd stay the hell away personally.
James Relinski same lol fuck this place
Goldfield, Nevada. Also known as "Glory Hole" from the 1987 film Cherry 2000.
funny how when folks that have to live in Generic style subdivisions see how free a person can live and express themselves in small towns they must be critical. Most of the folks who live in towns like Goldfield are from Cali where they have to live how their neighbors want them to live. When they get fed up with the total lack of privacy and move to a small town it makes them happy and critical like this fellow... sad stuff... got be from cali, doesn't even know what a Joshua tree looks like...
Definitely not an abandoned town. I got the most expensive ticket I've ever received in my life just outside Goldfield. The sheriff's deputy that gave it to me was seriously older than dirt. He looked older than the oldest dudes that greet people at the door in Wal-Mart. Very odd. The back of the ticket said that for an extra (several hundred dollar) "convenience fee", the ticket would be written off and not go on one's driving record. They definitely know people are willing to pay it to not have to go back to Goldfield and attend whatever semblance of traffic court they have there. Definitely watch your driving when passing through/near Goldfield, or any of the small weird towns on Hwy 95, for that matter. The hills most definitely have eyes.
i like that place.... :)

@@brooksanderson2599 actually "Bubba" was a Sheriff's Deputy in Tonopah, 26 miles away. I believe he's retired now though.

The town and people of Goldfield are amazing and hearty. This is a video of the current city if Goldfield. There is a Goldfield ghost town not to far south west towards Death Valley. It's really cool and also inhabited. I think there's a population of between 10 to 20. depending on the time of year. Gets unbelievably cold in the winter. If you would like to explore, I recommend being courteous and do not enter ANY buildings without permission. There's a great bar in the ghost town if you want to get some local flavor. If you're like the guy that called this area a sh*t h*ole... don't bother. you're not wanted there.

so crazy you saw a van and the scariest bristle cone pine.... why didn't you show the cemetery
I've visited here, even spent the night, and to be honest, it would need to borrow a horse to be a 'one horse town'. That aside, it was actually charming and you can feel the history everywhere. From what we saw geology and mining are the major industries with some prospectors still hoping to find a gold strike out there. We drove down from Tonopah on our way to Las Vegas and stumbled on this unique place. Burning man and Goldfield Days seem big here with spots dedicated to them dotted around town. Check out the history of those very unique art cars when you visit. If you like places where History lives, it's worth a day trip or an hour or two at least. Check out the creepy half-restored hotel!
Did you see any aliens lmfao

The world is full of things that you do not know. ..
Nevada is the battle born state. Nevada was admitted as a state in 1864 to keep it in the union, because there were Confederate sympathizers there. There was a battle between Union and Confederate sympathizers in Nevada at the start of the Civil War that centered around a saloon.
What's strange to me is, on most all of these types of videos there are never any people on the streets or just standing outside the buildings. Very weird.
Also, when going through these types of Area 51 towns, I've been focusing on the skies. You'd be surprised at some of the things you may see! 👽
Those are not Bristle Cone Trees, there Joshua Trees, & Joshua's don't have Pine Cone's they have pods
Oh how I would love to live in a quiet place like that, away from the absolute insanity of our day. No computer. No phone. No nothing. Just peace and quiet.
Wow talk about inaccurate depiction of a historical town.
So if you're into some of the oddest places in the Great Basin there is a documentary produced by UNR's PBS affiliate KNPB titled "Living in the Big Empty" which might point you towards some, but not all, of Nevada's better less know "tourist attractions." Like that odd what-ever-you-want-to-call-it at Imlay on I-80 or the Volkswagon graveyard in Stockton, Utah. Have you ever pulled in to the "town" of Knolls, Utah? Now there's a setting for a Steven King novel. Love your work, keep it up!
I too, am endlessly fascinated by the abandoned town of Nevada. ------------many years ago----the late 70's, my Late-wife & I decided, for the hell of it, to drive back to Denver, ---our home-----from LA, where we visited my relatives. -------We took the road as close to " Area 51" & we drove US 50 -------it was an unforgettable experience. We drove one full day, seeing no one. thankfully, ourcar, a '70 Maverick, did wonderfully------no problems at all, & we loved exploring several near ghost towns. Nevada is full of them. ----------Personally I love the desert. ------In many ways, I regret not moving there----somewhere----after I lost my wife, in '92. --------------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
So sorry to hear about your wife, but what wonderful memories! Thank you for sharing them!
I like the way you pause the video so we can see what you are talking about
The town itself looks like the setting for tremors
The crazy cars look like something from mad Max
This
Some of you might think I'm crazy but I think I might like to live in a little place somethin like this. I live in a small town in WA on the Olympic Peninsula but the people who run things moved up here in the 70's when they could sell their little homes in California for lots of $ and they bought the old Victorians here for next to nothing. Now we don't have families living in them cuz they turned them into bed and breakfasts. We have events all year round bringing tourists from all over the world. And it's kinda spendy to shop here. I want a simpler, quieter and slower life. Maybe cuz I'm 63.
You must have never driven thru New Mexico or Arizona hahaha
this town is also creepy from google earth street view.
Somewhere In Nevada….
And another video from my favorite Chicago resident. If the town doesn't sport a half million people, he thinks it's creepy. Goldfield is just another small town suffering from 'small town death'. Nothing creepy here. Just old stuff and folks who like it here, and continue to LIVE here. Chicago tourists need not apply (or stop).
See those funky cars that's where 2pac and Dre filmed California Love! 💯fr...
Not Creepy. Many Retired people live in/at these these small towns.
Shelter means shelter , not 5 million dollar houses and hoa's.
What does a person need to live.
Water , food , shelter , clothing ,
The confederate flag is a weird touch.
I'd bet those Art Cars are more likely related to Burning Man than Area 51...
True....but they certainly suit area 51...what with all the UFO type stuff on those crazy cars! Probably why the guy built 'em that way....because of his proximity to Nellis and Area 51. Take care. ~Kenneth
I like the Packard camper.
that is factory made, check out METEOR CAMPERS
Am I the only one that thinks ... maybe the alien have been to this place and took all the people who lives there.... that’s why they don’t even show the location on the map ... ?? to protect us???🤔🤔🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Once again thank you for sharing! I have been to Goldfield and took many pictures there. All of which are gone due to a crashed hard drive. I hope to get back there some day and do some more exploring! The graveyard is of particular interest and so is the hotel. It is the pits that nobody is allowed in the hotel for tours. And the decorated vehicles are well worth seeing!
I know! They should allow that cool spooky hotel to be toured. At least part of it! Thanks a bunch Anthony. ~KJ
There's free software that can recover images from a hard drive, though not even nessissary if you saved your windows.old folder.
The hard drive not only crashed but emitted smoke as well. No saving.
I am 77 yrs old, and I have seen many creepy things in my life, but there is one

I think and hope she lives on and on, at least untill the 22nd century.
Ambient temperature is 120°....why is everyone inside?
Yeah, what the heck is wrong with these folks? I absolutely LOVE hanging outside in 120 degree weather.
Those were not bristlecone pines. Those were Joshua Trees which are in the yucca family of shrubs. Joshua trees grow between 3500 to 5500 feet elevation. Bristlecone pines grow above 10,000 feet!
The only thing strange about Goldfield is there is no gas station. When I bought a car, I did not realize how small the gas tank was and I ran out of gas in Goldfield, Nevada. After asking around, I found out the police would give you 5 gallons if you gave your ID and filled out a form. I gladly did. The form asked you to donate what you could afford. I gladly donated full retail price for the gas.
So, the police of Goldfield are the "jack of all trades" of the town it would seem. Of course, they've got to make it seem more "official" by getting your personal info ; )
FYI, no Bristlecone Pines in Goldfield. Do your research, those are Joshua Trees.
Goldfield is a great place don't mock it.

Just the wife.....hahahahahahaha. ~Kenneth
Hahaha...ya! That (the Hotel) was on MY side of the road......I'm not coordinated enough to video and drive at the same time. Hahahaha....I actually have the hotel on another video somewhere. It's sure funky! Take care and thanks. ~Kenneth
we passed through goldfield once, daytime, only saw one(1) person around lol
hello..
An update... There is now a visitor center, at the location on the right at 2:29. It's paved, you can park overnight, there is a fenced dog run and a public restroom. The visitor center building is a museum and is open most weekends. A new gas station is in the process of being built at the south end of town, very close to the Car Forest. The Car Forest is not seen at all in this video, as they drove right past it. The art cars seen towards the end of this video are now in a different spot, next to the general store. Goldfield is not close to Area 51, but it IS close to Nellis Air Force Base, despite what some are claiming here. The extreme northern end of Nellis is only a few miles to the east of Goldfield. The Hoist House is now called the Mozart Tavern. There are no bristlecone pines in Goldfield, but the bristlecone pine forest, with the world's oldest trees, is in the White Mountains not too far away. The White Mountains form a part of the border between Nevada and California, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is only a 90-minute drive from Goldfield.
What is so spooky about Goldfield its the county seat for Esmeralda county. Far from a ghost town you should check out Goldfield days its a blast. The cars are art like the cadillacs in the desert in texas. I don't know if it will take off but there out in the desert you saw very little of them. Its not aliens its art ha ha. Next time you go thru goldfield stop at Jim Marshes bar its pretty cool. Also I would recommend checking out the courthouse its a real county courthouse and its like stepping back in time. Trivia this is the town Melvin Dumar picked up Howard Hughes and gave Howard a ride back to the DI.
Thanks Cody! Goldfield is such a funky cool place. You know....we've been through probably 100 times over the past 20 years....maybe even more. The thing is...we're always on our way to or from Las Vegas and/or Reno...so we're always "makin' time". It's only in the past few years we've decided to start videoing our travels. I'm just glad to bring even what we have here for people to see...and hopefully they can get a chance to experience the fascinating desert some day themselves! Take care and thanks again! ~KK
Cars look like something you'd see at Burning Man !

This guy: *Funky old Mail box* ....... *strange old rock*
These old abandoned towns may be on land previously owned by the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. He bought up massive areas of the Nevada desert around Las Vegas, for two reasons: 1) to prevent Nixon doing nuclear tests near his Vegas hotels 2) because he believed there might be mineral rights/oil/metals etc. Perhaps some of these properties or towns started to appear on his land as wildcat prospectors bought up parcels of land to look for oil or just to get land cheap. After Howard Hughes died in the 1970's his family began to sell off a lot of this desert land.
Kinda looks like something out of Fallout if you ask me.
you can hear the radiation as he drives through

Those are Joshua trees not bristle cone.
I've heard...that the biggest business in town is the knife sharpening shop.
The locals voted 46 years ago to remove the gas station....brought too many tourists to town, Plus once you run out there, your considered a resident! That's how they get population growth, Plus all those cars you see all over town. There's nothing wrong with any of them, except no ⛽ gas...😂
This is exactly what I aim to do later this year. For some odd reason desert and the sense of loneliness really amazes me in some weird way. Just have to talk my girlfriend into it instead of hanging in LA all the time...

Why drive through a little old town where a few people are hanging on to live there and start calling their home creepy? What's the point? Every town big or small has a couple of creepy buildings. Trying to call a funky town creepy to give yourself an excuse to post a video is rude and lame.
