Hi, Idid this and selected "back up" not sync. The back up is there in D (mobilesync/backup). However Itunes is not showing it at all when I'm selecting "restore from backup". PLEASE help. I use this for my work and now I have no files.

hi lurge , my back up was doing fine the last few months until my hp decided to update it self , now when I try and back up my iphone on iTunes it gives me an error message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone xxxxx because iPhone back up was corrupt" also says to delete back up in preference, what can I do to fix this ? do I have to redo everything ?? thank you in ADVANCE for your help!!

I just got a new phone today. I tried backing up my old and forever I had issues trying to get it backed up because the space on my ssd was filling. I searched a long time to find information to figure this out. After a few hours of trying, I found your video and it helped me redirect! Thank you for your video!! I saved it in a new folder and everything. For anyone else working on this, If you do as I do and make more folders than necessary, in your cmd code, make sure to redirect EVERY folder you make. my new direct was D\itunes\mobilesync\backup if you add a folder, include it in your command line!! thanks again

The description of the video was updated so you can make it work for you if you installed using the Microsoft Store (because iTunes behaves better that way... no spammy update notices etc) rather than from the Apple website. Worked for me, cheers man. For those who it's not working for, make sure the command entry is adjusted to the name of your own drive. E.g I had to change "D:\MobileSync\Backup" to "E:\MobileSync\Backup"
When I entered the command in CMD, I received an error "Cannot create a file when that file already exists" Solution: Delete the "Backup" folder on "C:\Users\%User Name%\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" then repeat the steps again. Thanks Lurgs!

Thanks a lot, man. It worked when I wrote a variation on your command: MkLink /J “Apple\MobileSync\Backup” “J:\MobileSync\Backup” I didn't need the percentage signs as I presume they are used instead of writing "Roaming", which was not relevant for me since my backup folder was in a different place to yours.
Viewers who face problem with hard link creation follow these steps... 1- Delete current backup folder from MobileSync folder. 2- Click inside address bar and copy current folder location from address bar. Your current folder location might look like "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup". Whatever it is just copy the full location. 3- Then use this command mklink /J "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup" "Here write the destination backup folder location for example, D:\Backup" 4- Press enter Hope this helps :)

Excellent video Lurgs. Absolutely brilliant. My 250 gb ss drive was getting so used up by my Apple backups. This was the solution to clearing up space on the c drive and storing the backups on another drive. Thank you also for updating the command line in January. That helped me big time. I also subscribed to your videos. I also use backups in the Apple cloud but I like to have a backup on my own computer. Seems in this day and age I feel safer with two backups. I like keeping my pictures. I don't want to loose them. So to me, it is worth it to pay Apple monthly to backup to the cloud. Paying $2.99 a month for that. You the man Lurgs!

if anyone can help me I'm having a problem, everything worked fine with redirecting but when i try backing up my iphone it says that my back up is corrupt an i need to delete it. it works fine if i dont redirect it but when i do it gives me that error. please need help

im assuming you fixed this by now but i had the same issue and want this answer to be there for anyone who sees this in the future: make sure the part in the link thats like ' "D:\MobileSync\Backup" ' matches up with whatever letter you used in naming your other ssd/hard drive. for example, mine was X: so i had to modify that part of the link you copy/paste to make it Backup" "X:\MobileSync\Backup" since otherwise it wouldnt know that was the drive i was trying to change it to.
ive done this so many times with slightly diff instructions from diff websites, as theres a few ways to do this - and depending on CMD or powershell how that works too - BUT, BUT, BUT, this is by far the easiest method ive ever used...by far...and the quicklets, and not one hassle....thanks heaps!

Little obvious note: MAKE SURE YOUR DRIVE IS ACTUALLY CALLED 'D:' . If not change his CMD text to whatever name your drive is. In my case, it was E: not D:

i had an issue with the command which stated that the folder already exists or something like that. I solved it by: 1.deleting the new mobilesync folder that we created and used the command again, by that it can create its own folder. 2. changing the command a little to because it should be mklink [options]

Thank you for this very detailed tutorial on how to do Itunes song back-ups on a non-default drive. While instructions, as written, did not work with my particular set up, it was fairly easy to tweak it to make it actually. I'd say that you got me 97% of the way there.
Thanks a lot kind sir, this has actually helped me out more than you can imagine. I couldn't upload my backup file back to my phone because apparently you need almost 3 times the data space of the actual backup file itself in C drive in order to execute what i just said. Moving all those files to D drive has helped. Thanks once again!

All I get when I enter any of those is "system cannot find the path specified", no matter which of the links in the description I used, I've tried all of them.
make sure you cut the mobilesync folder from the C: drive instead of copying it. if you can't, just delete the mobile sync folder from the C: drive after copying is done to D: drive. Then the commands should work.
Success following lurgs tips. Windows 10, itunes iOS 12.1.3 update, bricked my phone, likely due to lack of SSD drive space. In hindsight, Apple back up on my computer is the reason my SSD went from 45% capacity to 99% capacity by plugging in my iphone and updating my music in iTunes. When your computer is at 99% storage, there's not much more writing you can do even with 32GB of RAM. Would recommend copy-paste instead of cut-paste because if in the rare instance that the power went out in the paste action progress, you'd lose all the data.

Very helpful video!!!! One more point, if you are using a NAS for storage the /J option should be changed to /D That's what I had to do otherwise you get an error saying "Local volumes are required to complete the operation."
I follow the original steps and redirect to external hard disk E:\, but i want to change back to NAS, i then del the folders on E:\ and use the command MkLink /D "%AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "Z:\MobileSync\Backup", it returns "Cannot create a file when that file already exists." How can I solve this please?
I searched online and rename the old back up as old and created "Backup" and also did this: C:\WINDOWS\system32>cmd /c mklink /D "%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "Z:\MobileSync\Backup" symbolic link created for C:\Users\Fanny\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup Z:\MobileSync\Backup I click the back up folder in C:\, it didn't redirect to Z:\ but keep to prompt to C:\, but i put a file to test and it actually redirected, so is it correct?

on my first attempt, i tried to put the MobileSync and Backup folders within a couple other folders on the D: drive, (might have done something to mess it up here), then changed the junction command prompt to show the correct route. command prompt would tell me something like "can't create this file because it already exists". deleted the new stuff in the D: drive, "re-backed-up" my phone to the C: drive, this time ONLY making D:\MobileSync\Backup folders, did the cut+paste, ran the command, and it worked just fine. Thank you for the video! With a gaming rig using an M.2 as the boot drive, and the other "fast drives" needing to be filled with games, I've been looking for all possible ways of moving things over to the 2TB drive. This was a big help because my Backup is about 100GB!

I tried the command, MkLink /J "C:\Users\Gaurav\Apple\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\MobileSync\Backup" and it said it worked but the little arrow wasn’t on the file so I tried it again and it said local ntfs volumes are required to complete the operation. Any ideas on what I should do?

Hello, I did everything you did and it all worked, but when I went to do the backup it still said not enough storage. I did see it create a new backup in the new backups folder tho. I also had the little arrow on the old backup folder. I have a 128gb phone and 300gb space on my d drive. Thanks

Hey If this is any help to you and fellow subscribers, I use a third party program called Wondershare, Mobile Trans and ItunesGo, it bypasses need for users to use Itunes and you can transfer songs to just from PC to Phone but in reverse to and without having to have all your own music stolen from Apple Music and then be told you need to download the content and need a subsciption to listen to your own music.

hi lurge , my back up was doing fine the last few months until my hp decided to update it self , now when I try and back up my iphone on iTunes it gives me an error message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone xxxxx because iPhone back up was corrupt" also says to delete back up in preference, what can I do to fix this ? do I have to redo everything ?? thank you in ADVANCE for your help!!

I just got a new phone today. I tried backing up my old and forever I had issues trying to get it backed up because the space on my ssd was filling. I searched a long time to find information to figure this out. After a few hours of trying, I found your video and it helped me redirect! Thank you for your video!! I saved it in a new folder and everything.
For anyone else working on this, If you do as I do and make more folders than necessary, in your cmd code, make sure to redirect EVERY folder you make. my new direct was D\itunes\mobilesync\backup if you add a folder, include it in your command line!!

Hi! It's March 2019 --- still works if anyone is wondering. The description of the video was updated so you can make it work for you if you installed using the Microsoft Store (because iTunes behaves better that way... no spammy update notices etc) rather than from the Apple website. Worked for me, cheers man. For those who it's not working for, make sure the command entry is adjusted to the name of your own drive. E.g I had to change "D:\MobileSync\Backup" to "E:\MobileSync\Backup"

It worked when I wrote a variation on your command: MkLink /J “Apple\MobileSync\Backup” “J:\MobileSync\Backup” I didn't need the percentage signs as I presume they are used instead of writing "Roaming", which was not relevant for me since my backup folder was in a different place to yours.

Viewers who face problem with hard link creation follow these steps...
1- Delete current backup folder from MobileSync folder.
2- Click inside address bar and copy current folder location from address bar. Your current folder location might look like "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup". Whatever it is just copy the full location.
3- Then use this command mklink /J "C:\Users\Guest\Apple\MobileSync\Backup" "Here write the destination backup folder location for example, D:\Backup"
4- Press enter

Excellent video Lurgs. Absolutely brilliant. My 250 gb ss drive was getting so used up by my Apple backups. This was the solution to clearing up space on the c drive and storing the backups on another drive. Thank you also for updating the command line in January. That helped me big time. I also subscribed to your videos.
I also use backups in the Apple cloud but I like to have a backup on my own computer. Seems in this day and age I feel safer with two backups. I like keeping my pictures. I don't want to loose them. So to me, it is worth it to pay Apple monthly to backup to the cloud. Paying $2.99 a month for that.

if anyone can help me I'm having a problem, everything worked fine with redirecting but when i try backing up my iphone it says that my back up is corrupt an i need to delete it. it works fine if i dont redirect it but when i do it gives me that error. please need help

storage issue. you need another same backup file free storage in same drive to extract those backup data. then only it work.

im assuming you fixed this by now but i had the same issue and want this answer to be there for anyone who sees this in the future: make sure the part in the link thats like ' "D:\MobileSync\Backup" '
matches up with whatever letter you used in naming your other ssd/hard drive. for example, mine was X: so i had to modify that part of the link you copy/paste to make it Backup" "X:\MobileSync\Backup"
since otherwise it wouldnt know that was the drive i was trying to change it to.

ive done this so many times with slightly diff instructions from diff websites, as theres a few ways to do this - and depending on CMD or powershell how that works too - BUT, BUT, BUT, this is by far the easiest method ive ever used...by far...and the quicklets, and not one hassle....thanks heaps!

Little obvious note: MAKE SURE YOUR DRIVE IS ACTUALLY CALLED 'D:' . If not change his CMD text to whatever name your drive is. In my case, it was E: not D:

i had an issue with the command which stated that the folder already exists or something like that.
I solved it by:
1.deleting the new mobilesync folder that we created and used the command again, by that it can create its own folder.
2. changing the command a little to
because it should be mklink [options]

In theory it should do yes. Worst case scenario you could manually copy and paste the contents back from D: to the original C: folder.
Thank you for this very detailed tutorial on how to do Itunes song back-ups on a non-default drive. While instructions, as written, did not work with my particular set up, it was fairly easy to tweak it to make it actually. I'd say that you got me 97% of the way there.

I couldn't upload my backup file back to my phone because apparently you need almost 3 times the data space of the actual backup file itself in C drive in order to execute what i just said. All I get when I enter any of those is "system cannot find the path specified", no matter which of the links in the description I used, I've tried all of them.
make sure you cut the mobilesync folder from the C: drive instead of copying it. if you can't, just delete the mobile sync folder from the C: drive after copying is done to D: drive. Then the commands should work.

Success following lurgs tips. Windows 10, itunes iOS 12.1.3 update, bricked my phone, likely due to lack of SSD drive space. In hindsight, Apple back up on my computer is the reason my SSD went from 45% capacity to 99% capacity by plugging in my iphone and updating my music in iTunes. When your computer is at 99% storage, there's not much more writing you can do even with 32GB of RAM. Would recommend copy-paste instead of cut-paste because if in the rare instance that the power went out in the paste action progress, you'd lose all the data.

I follow the original steps and redirect to external hard disk E:\, but i want to change back to NAS, i then del the folders on E:\ and use the command MkLink /D "%AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "Z:\MobileSync\Backup", it returns "Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

I click the back up folder in C:\, it didn't redirect to Z:\ but keep to prompt to C:\, but i put a file to test and it actually redirected, so is it correct?
finally, i still got this error: "an error occurred while reading from or writing to the iphone" anyone can help?

Probably iTunes from Apple but I’d avoid installing it if I was you. It’s not great. I use my iPhone without ever connecting to iTunes.

on my first attempt, i tried to put the MobileSync and Backup folders within a couple other folders on the D: drive, (might have done something to mess it up here), then changed the junction command prompt to show the correct route. command prompt would tell me something like "can't create this file because it already exists". deleted the new stuff in the D: drive, "re-backed-up" my phone to the C: drive, this time ONLY making D:\MobileSync\Backup folders, did the cut+paste, ran the command, and it worked just fine.
Thank you for the video! With a gaming rig using an M.2 as the boot drive, and the other "fast drives" needing to be filled with games, I've been looking for all possible ways of moving things over to the 2TB drive. This was a big help because my Backup is about 100GB!

I tried the command, MkLink /J "C:\Users\Gaurav\Apple\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\MobileSync\Backup" and it said it worked but the little arrow wasn’t on the file so I tried it again and it said local ntfs volumes are required to complete the operation. Any ideas on what I should do?

Hello, I did everything you did and it all worked, but when I went to do the backup it still said not enough storage. I did see it create a new backup in the new backups folder tho. I also had the little arrow on the old backup folder. I have a 128gb phone and 300gb space on my d drive. Thanks
