That’s really helpful thanks Liz. I’ve just bought an overlocker so will be exploring what I can do with that. Don’t think a cover stitch is ever going to be a worthwhile purchase for me.
Very well explained but as a newbie, sewing is far more complicated than I expected with hundreds of machines...wouldn't be surprised if theirs a university course on it.
I don’t think I need a cover stick but I want one ☝️ I just bought a old school bernette funlock 006d I returned my brand new brother Seeger for it it was only used once and it’s amazing 🤩 it dose smell old hopefully I can get that old smell out and probably get it professionally cleaned the jukis have the same style as mine witch a lot of sewing machine repair people like more 🥰
Hi Liz, I have been looking for an answer everywhere, and I hope to finally find it from you. What is your experience sewing 4 way stretch lycra/spandex? Which machine would I benefit from more - overlocker or coverstitch (or maybe there is a hybrid you recommend)? I have been trying just with zigzag on a standard machine and finishing the hems is an absolute nightmare...
Hi, I have quite a lot of experience sewing 4 way stretch. I would recommend buying an overlocker first, because it's more useful for garment construction. I have a video on sewing tips for stretch fabric, you might like to check that out. The key thing when sewing 4 way stretch is really the needle choice - try a Microtex needle. A walking foot for your sewing machine will also be very helpful. For hemming without a coverstitch machine you could try a twin needle. Make sure to practise to get your tension right. Hope that helps
Hi liz , I have upgraded and bought a babylock as I felt l needed the airthread with needle threader, l have a sewing machine that does really nice twin needle sewing on it and really don't think getting a coverstitch worth it as I sew mostly woven . Even a combination won't be worth paying more for.
It's definitely not for everyone, it's a big expense for a fancy hemming machine but personally I don't find a twin needle as nice or stretchy as a coverstitch.
I'm thinking of doing some sewing and I've fallen into the journey of machine discovery which is fab, but after checking my t-shirt I can see every join is either a coverstitch or it's been overlocked, which leaves me wondering if I need a standard sewing machine or just one of each of those instead 🤔
I would say an overlocker will definitely help you up your game if you are wanting to sew jersey/stretch fabrics. A regular sewing machine will do just fine if you can't justify one immediately though! A coverstitch really is a fancy "nice-to-have." If you can afford it it's great for getting a factory finish on garments but you can definitely make do with a twin needle or honeycomb stitch on a regular machine.
A double needle zig zags the bobbin thread between the rows of stitching on the reverse. A cover stitch does a looped pattern which results in a stretchier stitch. Double needle is sometimes difficult to get right due to tensioning and tunneling of the fabric
I did a vote on the music a while ago and the overwhelming majority like it! I try to keep it low in the background (sometimes I get it wrong, I've only been editing videos for six months). The videos feel very dead without it.
Agreed. I love music. However, for those who have a bit of hearing hurdles, it was hard to hear you. Great information, explanation, and examples (lighting, fabric, thread color).
Yes, the sudden blast of louder music every time the text appeared was very irritating and painful on the ears. I was constantly changing the volume up and down or taking out my earplugs in a hurry. The content was very interesting but the music has put me off.
Best video on the differences that I've found yet.
I'm currently borrowing a friend's overlocker - it has revolutionised my sewing!
It is a game changer for sure.
Thank you so much, Liz. I appreciate the explanation. You save me some dollars! And I just subscribed. Thanks again. Have a great day.
Really clear explanations of the questions I had. Thank you!

This was so helpful! Thank you!
Love all your videos from New Orleans Louisiana 💕
Glad you like them!
Clarified my choice, thank you!
Thank you for this video
Thank you. Very helpful.
Thanks Liz I’m hopefully going to buy an overlocker soon your video was very helpful 🥰
Nice to hear a UK accent 😎
Thank you Liz, keep it up - I'm loving it! Huge hugs from down here in Sussex xx
thank you for the information
Thank you explaining it as...an expensive way to make a hem. Never heard of a cover stitch machine and why people were going crazy over them.
Thanks Liz!

Nice explanation. Keep it up!
Do you have a puffer jacket lining guide?
Thanks. No sorry I don't, I've never made one.
Thanks Liz :)
Thank you❤️🙌🏻
We want the lip ring!! :D

It depends on how much you make with stretch
Wonderful video... Thanks
Can you construct a garment with a coverstitch machine?
No, it's really just a fancy way to hem things.

What’s the difference between a coverstitch and using a double needle on a normal sewing machine ?
A double needle zig zags the bobbin thread between the rows of stitching on the reverse. A cover stitch does a looped pattern which results in a stretchier stitch. Double needle is sometimes difficult to get right due to tensioning and tunneling of the fabric
Do you still need a sewmachine when you make an t-shirt of other projects? Or is a overlock enough?
If you want to sew hems or do topstitching, you would need a sewing machine or a coverstitch machine. An overlocker can't do those things.
Thanks Liz you have really explained it well enough for me to understand. But can you change the music, please its very distracting. x

That noisy agitating music completely destroys the video
