It makes sense. Keep the line of forces in a straight line from centre of bore through to the tip of the toes (when prone). Treat the rifle and shooter as a single unit and tilt the whole unit as one. The unit is a heavy rigid, not an articulated vehicle. The only problem I have with shooting prone is getting up after firing the shot. The ground is getting further down each year.
Yes I have known about this for a while, used to have to deal with body strain that throws off your shot. Took quite a while for me to realize what you just explained in a few short minutes. Good job.
Mark, i listen to videos on 1.5x for the sake of time. Except for your videos. So much good info and i dont want to miss any of it! Thanks for the time you take to educate us and for your wealth of knowledge!
Great stuff... I had been around firearms and hunting since I was a boy, but the first time I was exposed to prone\positional shooting was during rifle qualification in the military. I found it remarkable how accurate one could be with open sights at 500 yards prone. We had to qualify in other positions as well but prone was the most stable and accurate. Thanks!
on a target that is several times larger than reality. a man' aint anything like 20" wide. Especially not in the third world. t'hey are lucky to be 12' wide, the arms are not held clamped to the ribcage, so if you hit an arm, it was a luck thing, cause you didnt aim at the arm. Most of this is malarkey. Why can't you sneak up MUCH closer, at night and then shoot the next day? How are you going to get enemies to sit there while you fire spotter shots? it's a joke, man.
This video makes me feel very justified in the change I literally made to my hunting bipod last night. I hunt with a chest rig that is roughly 3" in depth. I was finding it very hard to go prone behind my rifle because the legs of my bipod were not quite long enough to bring the gun to level. I would have to get into a very compromised position just to shoot 100 yards. I just added 4" brass pipe that I threaded into the foot. Once fully seated it provided 3 extra inches. I now also have the ability to add snow baskets for when we get snow. Previously my bipod often would only be enough to keep the barrel out of the snow. It should save me from having to squirm in the snow to settle it under me to make a shot when an elk is potentially staring at me like last year.
Hah! Timely. Off to the range now for Full Bore. The mounds are all over the place angle wise. A gentle curved mound that drops away at the feet always works a treat. People look at me weird as find the perfect spot, sometimes well away from the others and start clearing it, flattening grass etc Definitely helped my group sizes at 500 drop from 12 inches to 30 centimeters!
Well said....eventually;-) Just kidding. Your way of explaining things works very well. There's a lot of wisdom in the insight that common sense is only common once you figure it out. Very true!
Hi Mark! Another great insight. I have a range at my home that gets me to 180 yards. You’ve just explained why I sometimes have trouble from session to session getting the accuracy I normally get. After eliminating all the variables, I would still have sessions where the same hand loads that got me sub MOA would start being inconsistent. Moving to 100 yards would usually make the strings open up, and that made no sense to me. But my shooting platform is thirty feet higher than my 180 yard target, and the 100 yard target makes the shot that much steeper. I noticed that getting the rifle stable shooting down was frustrating but never put it together. Thanks, as always.
So you need a shovel and sometimes a whipper-snipper? All better than off-hand. Visit the Mt Barker - WA, range. I think it was set up for the military back in the 1900’s. Someone knew what they were doing. Maybe wrong, but to the best of my recollection, there are berms to lay on for shooting prone. Great info. Many thanks.
Dude thank you😂 That effect is persistent at my local 200 range.... And it's worse at 200 than 1,000. Meaning standing at 5ish feet of height off hand 👌 We shoot horizontally at the targets. Then we drop five feet into prom position and shoot uphill-ish and... It doesn't matter much through the irons, But the higher the magnification on your optic (The more screwed you are off hand) The more deviation you end up with when you're back in prone... I used to think it was my inconsistency until I learned that the older guys were, consistently adjusting their sights or sight picture... Variably between our offhand, seated, and prone strings of fire 🔥 You work in a realm that I cannot touch except through your videos. And bring important information back to mind when I should have thought of it the whole time Thank you sir. Shoot safely... And please continue to share your experience
in archery shooting up hill subtracts from normal range and shooting down hill adds..so was in a canyon setup a target 100yds below us , I used a 50yd pin to hit the target at 100yds. I believe the canyon wall was 60-70 degrees. When in ELR would you see this ? Have you ever seen this ?
60° up or down in ELR, think about that for a second, 3300 meter rise over a 3000 meter shot, yes that would have some effect, no I have not experienced that, lol, Cheers
I attempted a 1400 yard shot and had zero success. My body was not flat because I was trying to aim upwards. Then I tried a 1675 yard shot. This time my body was pointing at target. 3/5 hits and the misses were just off edge. This episode reiterated my experience exactly.
Shooting increase or decrease in elevation u also run into funny stuff with wond like up draft or cyclonic pockets of air depending on rock formation and grotto
We're putting in a new shooting pad at the range, our range goes uphill at 7 deg, we've been having a debate about whether we should angle the pad to match.
If I ever get into ELR (unlikely) I'll be going through every video you ever put out. That said, we have a really nice home made portable shooting bench. Very stable. Sure I'd prefer to shoot off a nice concrete bench at the range, but that's limited to about 300 meters.
I tried prone once….,due to back issues I found it exceedingly difficult to even shoulder the gun.. to the point I couldn’t get comfortable enough to even hold steady…never fired a shot
You know what would be a cool video to watch on your channel? • 3 of your favorite rifles. • Distance: 1000 yards. • 10 shots at a 10-15 inch target. • remaining shots out of the 10 shots will be fired at 5-7 inch. target. Same day, same conditions, same shooter. :)

Cool ! Never thought about it like that! Thanks!

This explains so much, I have experienced shooting in weird angles and never considered it to cause accuracy issues.
Thanks Man, cheers

Crazy. I've been doing that for so long that I thought it to be normal behavior.
Thanks Matt
pretty instinctive stuff for me...

Shooting increase or decrease in elevation u also run into funny stuff with wond like up draft or cyclonic pockets of air depending on rock formation and grotto
Well the higher you go the less the wind affects the bullet and the opposite for the lower you go... more altitude, less air density...Cheers
