    I've read one comment that mentioned enlarging the M4 feed ramps to allow use of the less sharply pointed .30 cal bullets. Since I bought my 300 upper with the intent to use the various bullets I cast for my other .30/31 revolvers & rifles, that seems like something I might "need". Cast & coated lighter-weight bullets are way more affordable than jacketed 150s and up, and generally have more of a blunt nose shape. This carbine will be used to transition some of my grandkids from rimfires into centerfire shooting, and that's why I intend to use that group of bullets more than the heavier, pointier type. I do have a good supply of 110 gr ZMAX and 150 semi-point plated bullets, but I'm a cheapskate and I know my students are gonna want to put a lot of rounds downrange. I'm starting to wish I would've saved up for a bolt rifle instead of snapping at the more affordable AR upper. I'd like your opinion regarding this issue. Thanks.

      If you can compare your 300blk next to a 556 upper looking at the feed ramps...you will see that the feed ramps on the 300 are wider... they have been coming that way for years now. Back in the very beginning they were using 556 feed ramps but that practice stopped not to long(within months) after the cartridge was introduce... needing to widen the feed ramps is just more internet foolishness IMHO.

      @@papasplace2 Thanks. One reason I was wondering was because when I tried to chamber my first dummy round (Lee 120 gr RF) the teeth of the locking lugs left two big gashes on the ogive...

      @@edbecka233 You don't usually see people trying to shoot round flat nose bullets in an AR. A bolt rifle no problem... in a semi auto rifle like the AR you want to use as pointed a bullet as you can get.. it makes loading the rounds so much easier and reliable. The lee 312 150 and 160 bullets sized to the correct diameter work very well for a lot of people. I know a guy that casts in zinc and loves them for his AR.
      One of the major drawbacks to widening the feed ramps is that you weaken the locking lugs and that could be disastrous!

      @@papasplace2 My son and I are saving up for a bolt gun, but I couldn't resist jumping on this $200 upper. I own all the Lee .30s except the two 312 AK designs and the boattail heavy, but I guess I'll have to order one or the other. I wasn't gonna eliminate any lugs, just try to contour/polish the ramps a bit. This upper won't have any frame stretchers shot through it. Been loading since '75 and got the cylinder crackers outta my system early on. Also thinkin about sellin off my 450 BM upper and get a bolt gun there, too, and choose a bolt over a semi for the .7.62X39 as well, bcz I can't get the 450 to cycle, but after reading your info on the .300 being chronically undergassed, before I get rid of the .450 I'll replace the original gas block and maybe ream the gas port in the barrel...

      @@edbecka233 I have heard and seen a lot of people that have a very tough time getting the boat tail heavy to shoot well... I would highly recommend the 150 or the 160 7.63x39 bullets.. they both shoot well.

    Im building a 300 and was looking at barrel and gas system lengths. Thank you very much for your information. Here in New Zealand we can build/own suppressors with out any licences/tax stamps. Iv suppressed most of the rifles I own. Problem here is everythings so expensive. $2000 for a basic ar, very few importers of 300bo ammunition and if you can find them $40-50 bucks a box of 20.

    Just finished my 300 build, 10.5" barrel by Ballistic Advantage with pistol length, .0935 gas port in unsuppressed. Test fired with both carbine and H1 buffer. Fired 125, 150, and 220. 125 and 150 ran like champs with either buffer, but 220 would sometimes not cycle and would not completely lock back on the last round. Not really worried about 220, primarily gonna run 110 and 125 loads. Thanks for the info, now subscribed.

    These 300 pistols are a blast, pardon the pun, but if building from scratch,,go with the larger gas port, also an adjustable gas block..saw a nice one, not expensive and no tool to adjust it. Then you have to go to the other end, spring and buffer,,,go with a light spring to start with, and a carbine buffer,,,and go from there, especially if you want to run suppressed and sometimes not...God bless all the vets..my youngest is almost done serving, the other two are home, one was ten years in the corp, it's fun being a grandpa...we can all breathe a bit easier after the election, I live in wa. With a carbine length gas system on a 300 you will require a lighter buffer spring. There is a company that makes them. However, you can cut approximately 6 coils off a normal spring and it will work. I have done this several times before and have never had a complaint or malfunction.

    I changed to an H2 buffer and it slowed the cycle down just enough it seems. I have a 10.5” barrel with a pistol length gas system and a local Smith suggested the H2 so I went with it before the first round and after a few hundred rounds, I haven’t had a single failure to eject or failure to load and seat completely. I’m no expert and it was my first build but everything seems to he working beautifully but for one issue. The buffer hits the retainer pin, leaving small marks each round fired so I have ordered an offset buffer retainer pin. It seems my lower’s retainer pin location is out of spec (relatively common evidently) and this is a cheap way to prevent the buffer from contacting the pin, and eventually shearing down the road. Bcg and head space is all good so I’ve narrowed it down to this and should have the 15$ pin in the next day or two.

    Go to Nemo arms and get a 300 blackout recoil spring and use a regular buffer and solve your problem, they are softer springs and cycles a lot better, they’re around $20 but well worth it!

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  4 роки тому

      My problem is solved...for free. The gas port was undersized for shooting un-suppressed. The MFG opened up the gas port for and even paid the freight both ways...can't beat that with a big stick.
      The whole design of the 300AAC Blackout was all you had to do was change barrels and no other components. The bandaids people came up with to fix the problems they were having with the barrels/uppers they bought was mind boggling. 99% of the problems people encountered were caused by undersized gas ports. A lot of barrel MFG sized the gas ports as if every barrel was going to be used with a suppressor... turns out that many have no intention if using a suppressor.

    Cutting down the buffer spring does work. I have a 16" barrel with carbine length gas sytem and it would not cycle reliably even with ammo that was loaded above recommended pressure. I ended cutting a coil or two off my buffer spring and now it functions OK. So if you do happed to have a short barrel with a carbine length gas sytem I would try cutting down the buffer spring or trying to find a buffer spring with less tension. I believe there are some of these available.

      Do you think running a piston set-up with an adjustable block would a) be a good resolution and b) reasonable?Thanks you, sir.

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  9 років тому

      +Johnny I. (Logan) I have yet to see or hear anyone running 300AAC Blackout with a piston setup on an AR platform reliably without using a supressor. IMHO an adjustable gas block on a 300 is a waste of time. The key factor on making a 300 run reliably on an AR is gas port suze and location. By reliably running I refer to shooting both sub and supersonic rounds without a supressor.
      I have a very good friend that is waiting for IWI to release their 300 blackout conversion for the Tavor. What's holding IWI up is getting the piston system to run with the available gas that the 300 blackout generates. Even LRWC has not figured it out yet.

    • @gierhedd75
      @gierhedd75 9 років тому

      Thank you for the informative response, sir. Are you aware of any barrel manufacturers out there that make them available without being drilled? The impression I get is that the pistol length gas system seems to be the way to go, and as you stated, with the correct size port.
      Of course, I guess this also adds a certain amount of risk of junking the barrel if done incorrectly.
      I suppose you'd also need a length of gas tube and the ability to flare it at the correct length.
      What do you think about a wider tube? Or would that not allow the correct pressure?

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  9 років тому

      +Johnny I. (Logan) There are several mfg that are making 'working' barrels. IMHO on a pistol length gas system you need a gas port around .09 inches or so to run reliably supressor or supersonic without a supressor. If you get a barrel with a smaller diameter gas port any compitent gunsmith should be able to open it up. Even my Wilson Combat 11.3 in barrel had to be opened up. I sent it back to Wilson and they did the work for me. Now it runs like a scalded ape on steroids. .. lol.

      @papasplace2  8 років тому +1

      yes that has been mentioned before. but the premise of 300 Blackout is that everything is compatible from the AR-15 except the barrel. a lot of barrels were made that simply can't operate 300 Blackout without Band-Aids and or a suppressor. not everyone is interested in running the suppressed mode. for me the 300 Blackout was a replacement for an AK-47 and or a 30-30 lever gun. I was seeking commonality in a platform. the barrel I have now runs great it does everything I want it to.

    I have heard guys with the similar issue that you had with this barrel and they claimed to have cut the buffer spring down one clip at a time, until they got it to work perfectly. In essence cutting down the spring required less pressure to cycle correctly. Im not sure if this actually works but just something ive heard people claim they've done.

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  9 років тому

      I have no idea if it would work or not, The point was that the barrel was a piece of junk and would never function correctly as it was made.
      300 blackout requires a pistol gas system and a gas port at least .095 in diameter on barrels less then 16 inches to cycle both subs and super's without a suppressor.
      Band aids to fix any problem aren't the direction I wanted in a firearm. I could have sent the barrel out to have it turned down and the gas port welded shut and drill a new hole but it would have cost more then just getting a new barrel.

    Question: No one else seems to have this particular problem so I wonder what you might think it is.
    16" barrel, carbine length gas system, standard buffer spring, reliable and consistent for feeding and bold hold open after last round.
    The problem is that 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 cycles results in the empty shell not ejecting properly and winds up competing with the next round for entry into the chamber. This is VERY consistent when it happens and the shell casings end up with exactly the same crimp. I suspect it's something in the bolt but all this noise about gas system and buffer spring issues has me second-guessing. One source out there even suggested there might be a head spacing issue which, in my mind, should be unthinkable since I bought the entire upper pre-assembled. (You'd think a professional manufacturer would get that right... but then again, a recent review of a Sig Sauer product has be rethinking that notion.)
    One thing is clear -- the bolt is most definitely cycling. Just occurred to me -- what if it was cycling too hard and the casing is slipping out from the extractor? Is that possible?

      +erroneus00 A couple questions for you..
      1. Have you contacted the mfg of the upper to see what they say yet?
      2. Is the empty fired brass extracting properly ?
      If it is extracting the fired brass but not ejecting it I would look at
      your ejector pin/spring as the cause of the problem. If it isn't
      extracting the fired brass possibly look at extractor spring set up and
      maybe upgrade the spring/insert/o-ring as well as giving the chamber a
      darn good scrubbing with some solvent.
      When firing, if the bolt is coming back far enough to pick up the next
      round and the bolt is staying open after the last round has been fired
      you don't have a buffer or a gas port problem.
      All of the above is assuming that your using factory ammo not reloads.
      Reloads will open up another whole different can of worms.
      I hope that I helped and answered your question. If not let me know.
      Take care

      +Papa's Place 1. I have attempted. Not getting much luck. DoubleStar. Hard to reach. Bought it from MidwayUSA and left communications with them and left feedback on the item. Feedback disappeared. No explanation.
      2. The brass extracts well except when it "kind of comes out" then gets jammed into the chamber again at the same time as the next round.
      I saw another discussion on 300BLK which may fit what I'm experiencing though. One guy blames his GEN2 PMAG. He explained in detail what to do and how to remedy and in another video, I saw a guy literally shaking the rounds out of his magazine. I thought that was crazy...until I tried it myself.
      Then I decided to try manually cycling (on SAFE!) rounds in rapid succession and low, what did I find? A double-feed and a propensity for occasional rounds to pop loose. I think... I suspect... I believe what is happening is a round may emerge early somehow preventing a proper ejection of the shell case even if it has been pulled from the chamber. (Interestingly the jams are strikingly identical with the shell casing on top and the crimp exactly the same.)
      So I think that's what's wrong here. I just have to prove it by using other magazines and by making the recommended modification.

    14:22 I hear this a lot with 300 blackout. I think that people forget that we're talking about a 110gn bullet. About the weight of a 9mm round. A couple of 100 FPS with a heavier bullet means more energy. the difference in energy from a 11" and 16" 300 blackout is 200ftlbs. The same can be said for 5.56. Yet we don't like short barreled 5.56 barrels. Why? Wasted powder, more flash, more noise. The same is true for 300 blackout. I constantly hear how the 300 blackout was "designed" for a 9" barrel. As if anything after that is useless. I think if the point is to have a short gun, then perfect. But I always hear how people don't want 16" barrels because they're not needed for the round.

    I have seen carbine length .300 blackout barrels work with low mass carriers.
    5 years ago midlendth 12.5 inch 5.56 barrels wouldnt work. Now,some of the best companies on the market readily make them available while others still havent figured it out. The gas system works in conjunction with the bcg,buffer and spring. If these are set up to work together the carbine length gas system will work with a 10.5inch .300blkput barrel. Do your home work tho.

    Change your powder to Accurate 5744 and you will have no problem. W296 or H110 works with subs. I have a SBR with pistol length gas tub but i tested my reloads in my friends 16 inch 300 blackout and it worked fine. Most reloading books, even their max loads are a little on the light side. Your shooting a 300 blackout with 35-50,000 psi out of a gun that was made to take a little over 65,000 psi. you can crank it up if you want to.
    And most reload books will tell you that lil gun will not cycle sub rounds.

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  8 років тому +1

      +Equus Pallidus Your friends 16 inch barrel will work fine. Barrels shorter then 16 inches MUST have a pistol length gas tube to run reliably unsupressed. My loads with Lil' Gun and 4227 run great on 16 inch barrels even with carbine length gas systems but will not run a shorter barrel with a carbine length gas system. The shorter barrels do not have enough dwell time to run properly. My loads with Lil' Gun ad 4227 run great on the pistol length gas system of the new barrel even with a slightly smaller gas port size(.095 vs. .120). The extra 2 inches of barrel allow the gas to build up for a longer time allowing the BCG to gather up enough speed to cycle the AR properly(not short stroking).
      I am only interested in running supers at this time because I have no use for subs(I do not have a suppressor) I run Lil" Gun because it was one of the early popular loads that worked for 300 Blackout. I actually prefer 4227 now because it more consistent, doesn't burn as hot Lil' Gun and gives me better accuracy.
      When loading up rounds I prefer to play it safe and stick with published loads. The thought of have a catastrophic failure because of a cranked up load just doesn't appeal to me. I am funny that way.

      I understand but you will not blow your gun up. Acc 5744 works great in pistol length gas tubs with sub sonic. I have a 9 inch with pistol length of course and subs run like clock work. I do not suppress either never really saw the use in it. If if wanted to shoot a .45 ACP, Basically, I would shoot a pistol. I am a super sonic type of person and my basic load is Acc 5744 at 19 grs and a 168 gr berger. Muzzel velocity is 1850 fps. It gives me 1276 ft-lbs out of a 9 inch barrel. The only reason I loaded the subs was for a friend who has a 16 inch barrel with a carbine tube and he could not get the rifle to cycle and eject so I worked up a load for him and he has not had a problem since with Acc 5744 and 220 gr bullet. Dwell time is a problem when your running your gun at 35-45,000 psi which is what all subs run at. So you get it as close to super as possible without going over, running the gun at a higher PSI. It will take care of the dwell problem. Or you can just run a bolt carrier that has been lightened, a Light carbine buffer and spring and that will also take care of the cycling problems. As they say there is always another way to skin a cat.
      Good talking to ya.

    Thanks for the great video. I have a question regarding feeding problems with 155gn cast bullets (Lee mould C312-155-2R). My 300 works/cycles great with 125 FMJ bullets but the 155gn cast bullets won't go into full battery with an OAL of 2.050". I read on one of the blogs that the 300 can be loaded to a minimum of 1.780 (and max of 2.260") which doesn't make sense to me; the 1.780 OAL puts the base of the bullet well into the cartridge neck which, I would think, would generate excess pressure and cause accuracy problems. Can you please advise as to how I can make the 155gn cast work in my 300? Thanks.

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  2 роки тому +1

      You need to see at what OAL that bullet is hitting the lands in your barrel(every barrel/chamber is different).... Different ogives(bullet tip shape) will require different OAL. There are a ton of videos on UA-cam showing how to do this.
      I would start with the min charge after you figure out the max OAL and work up from there with your powder charge. Better safe then sorry.

    The unexpected solution to LOW GAS problems is the same as HIGH GAS problems. A Heavy Buffer (counter intuitive). The Heavy buffer slows down the action so the case can cool off to be pulled out more easily. It also holds pressure in BCG so it can build up. (fractions of seconds). Also a reduced power spring (NEMO, Wolf, Tubbs). The barrel is an Anderson (still make). Should work with a .125 gas port. Original AAC specs specify an H2 buffer (always use). Lastly check your gas block. While the hole may be large in the barrel, there is no reason the gas block hole should be that large unless modified. Get that sucker working and make a video!!

You mentioned about the pistol length gas system and I may have missed it but is this required for rifle length barrels as well? Also I was thinking about going with a piston system since I might be able to adjust the pressure to compensate between super and subsonic loads including if I run suppressed (in the far future). Is the pistol length gas port the best whether you run DI or piston? Also if you do a series solely to the 300blk I think a lot of people would tune into for it, I know I would.

      I know it’s been years but 300 black uses pistol powder and burns fast so after a 9” barrel the gains in velocity begin to diminish rapidly therefore gas pressures for recycling should always be in pistol gas port length for reliability and having most pressure possible if your overpassed you could always use a adjustable gas block but getting to much gas out of a 300 acc is not a problem ever in any of my own experiences

Please research before you tell everyone that something doesn't work. How many company's spend thousands of dollars to manufacture a barrel that doesn't work. People that "think" they know how to manufacture usually can't get the money required to do so. I hope you were able to get your donanted barrel to work. You are incorrect. the 300 AAC Blackout was designed and intended to be run both suppressed and unsupressed using both super sonic and subsonic rounds. Go do some research and read what AAC had to say about the cartridge. Manufactures took the same attitude as you and assumed that everyone would be running suppressors... Here is a good start for you as well look up papers written by Robert Silvers... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.300_AAC_Blackout
      The 300AAC Blackout was from the get go designed to meet and or exceed the 7.62x39 Russian round. Being able to run subsonic rounds with suppressor was goal #2. It was designed to be run in a 9.5 inch barrel with pistol gas system. AAC used a gas port diameter of .093 inches... way too many other barrel manufactures ran with a .072 inch diameter gas port... which is too small. I have spent over 7 years researching and and understanding the round and the requirements to be able to run as designed. What have you done?
      My 11.3 inch barrel has the .093 inch gas port and will run super sonic as well as subsonic rounds unsuppressed... will yours? I don't have special buffer springs or special buffers or special BCG.. std carbine spring and buffer as well as an M16 weight BCG. Wilson combat looked at my barrel and agreed that the gas port they were using was undersized and opened up my gas port as well as made changes to their production runs.
      A carbine length gas system in a barrel less then 16 inches will not run unsuppressed even with a .093 inch gas port... there simply is not sufficient gas to run the gun.

    • @papasplace2

      The main "timing" on the AR platform is the dwell time of the different length gas systems. The question your asking is consistent in all the lengths. By using a shorter gas system you are adding to the dwell time and giving the system the time to pass the correct amount of gas to the BCG to do it's job.

    Ever have a bolt the seems to not quite line up to full battery? I’m noticing I have resistance (besides the gas rings) when carrier slides forward the bolt is not line up perfectly with the locking tines. Could the barrel be off tdc? Sometimes I’m getting a ftf with live round cycled.

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  5 років тому +1

      If you can smoothly operate the bolt in the carrier when it is out of the gun, then my best guess is that you have a head spacing problem...the chamber is not cut correctly...giving you too small a chamber which keeps the bolt from fully engaging into battery. Get yourself a set of go no-go gauges or take it to a gunsmith to have it checked.

    Bought a 9.5" 300 blackout piston driven pistol and it wouldn't cycle. Sent it back to the factory and they fixed it by changing buffer spring and drilling out the gas port. Now the gun runs great, but after shooting 100 rounds, the gun was really "dirty" in the area of the Sampson rail, adjustable gas block, barrel, and barrel nut. I mean really "dirty" with lots of copper dust. They told me that the port has to be bigger because of the round and therefore it will "peel" more copper off the bullet as it passes the port. The gas block has a .125 opening in it and so is the size of the hole in the piston. After watching the video, I think that they drilled the barrel port bigger than .125, therefore "peeling" lots of copper. Could I be right about this?

    What length gas system for 12.5 inch 5.56

    • @papasplace2
      @papasplace2  Рік тому

      I don't have any experience with that set up... but my best guess is that a carbine gas system would be fine because the 223/5.56 produces a lot more gas then the 300 blackout does.

    Bro your short barrel is strictly suppressed only subsonic use only big grain weights

    A lighter buffer spring and buffer setup would prolly have fixed your issue.. mine is a bit lighter than my riffle spring and buffer... hope it helps and makes sense

      One of the original design was so that no special parts were needed to run 300 Blackout in the AR platform. The only change required was a barrel. The biggest problem with the 300 blk is that barrel manufactures decided that everyone was going to run it suppressed so they mad the gas port to run suppressed. even major manufactures made the same decision.. My Wilson Combat barrel was under gassed because of the undersized gas port. I sent it back and redrilled the gas port to a larger size. I needed no changes to my rifle to run supers and subs after they opened up the gas port. I needed no special springs or buffers or gas blocks... 99% of the problems people have is because the gas port is undersized!

    With my 10.5 and hand loads I’m getting over 2200 fps not far from 2300, thats 110 gn..... my 125’s aren’t too far behind those.

    Good info partner thanks for the video. Would you or anyone else on here know of any good deals for 16' 300blkout barrels? I don't wanna deal with the tax stamp and all that crap I'm fine with using a 16' barrel for shooting 300blkout. The best barrel I've found so far has been a Wilson Combat stainless steel 300blkout for under 300$, I'd greatly appreciate any and all info for good quality/good price 300blkout barrels, thanks !!

      +Bob Dobalina WC barrels use a carbine length gas system, which is fine if you are running supersonic ammo. Running subsonic ammo without a suppressor may create cycling issues depending on the ammo you are using due to the shorter dwell time associated with a carbine gas system. Your best bet is getting a barrel with a pistol length gas system. Noveske, AAC, Rainer, I think CMMG now too, all make barrels with pistol length gas systems only for the 300BLKOUT. Your only issue is maybe over-gassing on supersonic ammo if you ever run a suppressor with it. I have a 16” and 8.5” SBR in 300 BLKOUT. Both barrels are Noveske w/ pistol length gas systems and JP AR Tuned Buffer Spring. The 16” has a H2 buffer and the 8.5” has a Spikes ST-2 buffer. The 16" got a slightly heavier buffer due to the longer dwell time. ZERO issues with either rifle running all sorts of factory ammo and handloads in combination w/ and w/out any of my 7.62 suppressors.

      If you had watched the video you would have seen that I did say for barrels less then 16 inches in length that you do need a pistol length gas system. I even went as far as saying what size the gas port in the barrel needs to be size wise too.
      The carbine gas system only works for barrels 16 inches or longer.

      But it was worth your while to get the information wasn't it?? I am not a spokesperson nor an actor...just a guy that has learned the hard way what works and what doesn't.
