- This is my video project about Hal Poindexter, one of the most impactful bluegrass artists in the Los Angeles area during the first half of the 1960s. He started the band, the Golden State Boys with his brothers Leon and Walter and their brother in law, Herb Rice, who also happen to be the father of Larry, Tony, Ronnie and Wyatt Rice.
Hal Poindexter recorded a couple of numbers with the Country Boys - a group that would soon would change their name to the Kentucky Colonels.
In the full length video - 1 hr 24 min - Hal shares his first hand encounters with Buck Owens, Clarence & Roland White, Maybelle Carter, the Stanley Brothers, the Rice family, Marty Robbins, Glenn Campbell, Roger Miller, the Gosdin Brothers, Vern & Rex,
Don Parmley, Randy Graham, Scotty Stoneman and many more. Hal talks about famous music venues in LA like the Ash Grove, the Troubadour, the Icehouse in Pasadena, KCOP - TV show Cal's Corral.

Jan I can't even begin to thank you enough for this!!!!! Absolutely priceless
I've known Mr. Poindexter for years. Very fine fellow.
Great history and educational segment...well done.
This is excellent! Thank you Jan.
I really loved this story of the GSB. This period of music absolutely lights a fire in me. Thank god there are a few still with us to tell the stories of those days.
thanks for your kind words
Great video Jan! Good work
Mr. Johansson, I’m one of Hal Poindexter’s younger sisters, Angie Poindexter (Garrett), and I just listened to your interesting video! I’m so glad you and Hal connected because Hal is the last surviving member of the Golden State Boys. As you know, Hal was the founder and creator of the band, along with Herb Rice. With Hal, you’ve collected true facts about one of your “unsung heroes” and you created an amazing historical video crammed with behind the scenes information. I just wanted to tell you thanks for making this phenomenal piece a part of your Unsung Heroes of Bluegrass!
It’s great to hear from you… I appreciate your kind words. ❤️🎻🪕🙏🏼
11:26 Thank you so much for this Jan!
Enjoyed this thanks for posting did not know Del McCoury was involved also
Have you learned anything new so far from watching this video?
That Del McCorey played the banjo pretty well.
I learned about the way that Larry and Tony Rice in particular were immersed in the music from a young age.
