That’s a very great video of directional signs. I’m very sure that the signers are very pleasant with it. Hopefully that you will be making more video of verbs in ASL in the near future. Have a very pleasant week, Meredith! 😊
This made me think of a question I'd never thought to ask before. How hard is it for children who have been raised speaking ASL exclusively to learn to read? I thought of this because I never realized exactly how different grammatically and linguistically ASL is from spoken or written English.
Jan, In my first ASL class, I learned that deaf people read. I wondered how they could read because if they couldn't hear the sounds of the letters, then how did they know the words. My prof said they have speech therapy or they recognize the words for their signs. I never knew that deaf people could read until she said that.
Is "I have to drive my car to the mechanic's" the same same as "I have the drive to complete this momentous task" or "Put the car in the Drive position to move forward"? Verb vs Noun
ASL is always contextual, so that means signs are not about words, but they are about the meanings of the words. Drive has different meanings. To drive the car to the mechanic's means that you will move it from one place to the mechanic's shop. If you have "drive" to complete a project, then you have motivation to do it. The sign for drive (a car) is different than the sign for drive (to be motivated). Don't think about the words, but think about the meaning s of words. I'm cheering for you! 🤸🏽♀️
Not saying she's a bad signer but you can tell the difference between a deaf signer and a hearing signer. And you can tell even if she doesn't speak in the videos.
This was better than the last one I saw. You went slow enough over each sign so I could repeat the sign. I could see which sign, which direction to move it. So much better.
Hi Meredith! Lately, I've been loving ASL more and more and I've been learning so much from your videos! Thankyou so much for making these videos! I am a little bit confused about how to sign the can, do, and will questions. Can you please make a video about it, please? Thankyou so much
Being a security personnel, who meet many different people, I found it important to learn ASL, this channel has been great, even if it's not easy, but I am learning something everyday
Put it into action. A friend suggested going to the library and signing along with a child's book. When you get comfortable doing that, contact your local center for the deaf and see if they ever have reading times for kids (or the library, asking if they have any deaf families who bring kids for reading time). Include the info that you're learning ASL still when you introduce yourself, but that you hope they enjoy and will sign slowly to help you after.
I love your videos. I have a deaf friend and always wanted to talk with her in person not just by messages and your video has been helping me. And haha, loved your “awkward” dancing lol
I really love all of your videos! I have learned a lot of ASL!! Thank you so much for teaching me and all of the world around who is also trying to learn!! Thank you!
I just subscribed after watching your guest appearance on Olly Richard's channel. Great presentation of these materials. I look forward to checking out these videos.
Love the channel and videos, I am learning so much! Have you thought of doing a video on home appliances and furniture? Couch, oven, microwave, things of that sort?
I love your videos and find them to be very helpful! Im currently taking ASL 1 and would like to one day become an interpreter. In class we are learning about giving directions to someone else and I am having a hard time with it. The part that I am struggling with is flipping your signs so other people understand it for some reason it is not clicking in my brain for me. Do you happen to have a video discussing that in more detail that maybe i've missed or any tips on how to get better at understanding it? Thank you for being so informational and making learning this beautiful language a little easier!
Thank you for the videos! I love learning more tips to ASL. I work in a haunted house with other fellow deaf and hard of hearing haunters. Can you do a video that surrounds in that environment?
ive decided to start learning because i am autistic and sometimes i have moments where i just cant physically speak. i hope to teach my family as well so we can still communicate when im having a non-verbal period.
I’m interested in seeing the difference between the signs “ask” and “need”? Or are they basically the same but depending on context, like you can watch 👀 or you can look at your watch?
The more videos I watch, the more confident I become communicating with my deaf coworkers. Thank you!

Thanks for answering Gale.
I'd imagine it'd be about as easy as Chinese kids learning Hanji. So, by the end of elementary school possible, but a reallly sucky process.

From my understanding, ask differs because you start with with straight index finger and transition to bent. But need starts with bent index finger.
Thanks Katherine for answering!
