One of the most accurate and concise videos on installing springs. Everything covered here was exactly as was taught to me by my company's experienced garage door installers. Awesome job.
After having discovered a broken spring in my two spring system, I found your site, measured the spring with your clear instructions, ordered the kit and within a few days I was ready to watch this video and replace both springs and bearing plates included with the kit along with the rods used for winding/unwinding. This was my first time ever replacing springs of this sort and took my just over an hour taking caution unwinding and winding, in particular.Thomas, thanks for the great tutorial and tips on the spring replacement!
Ive looked at a bunch of videos, by far this is the best, no ego here, lots of great little hints that others do not want to share, thanks for providing this.......
Your video saved me so much money. Spring broke on wednesday. Went online to see if this was something I could fix myself. Found your video. Ordered spring. Got it Friday and by Friday evening my door was operational again using your video and spring. I'm not much of a do it yourselfer, but this was great
Some guy had a seisure and backed up his car into my garage door, it bent the hell out of it and caused the tension wires and rollers to go out of whack, well, after some hammering and metal straightening I looked up a video on setting up the wires and springs, yours came along and helped me set my garage door back to operational condition, thank you very much! You're a good teacher. Cheers from Texas!
what you did in an 18 minute video took me 6 hours, 4 hours running to 3 different stores ( one I thought would have springs, one said they had springs, and a third that actually had springs ) , 1 hour for lunch and probably an hour of actual work. Thanks so much for your video - it was perfect.
I used this video to learn how to replace my garage door torsion springs. I had no prior experience and I did this easily. Great video, good tips. Thanks. My grandkids are impressed. They call me Memaw, Finder, Fixer, Untier of kKnots!!
Thank you very much. By your video I save a big money. Just 2 springs, 2 end bearing plate and 2 rack or rails. Total is $300. Instead of replacing new one $1,300. Thank again my friend!
I am a hero at home thanks to you. Fixed door that has been broken for about a year now. Wooden door so heavy I couldn't lift it manually with broken spring. Completed the job plus insulation in an evening. Thanks.
Fastest winding bar man I have ever seen, very experienced you are, thank you no worry's about forget that spring, thank you for sharing your expertise sir
The best and more accurate video I have ever watched about replacing those springs…..you covered everything man, I am sure everyone who watches this video will easily do the job, thanks a lot man.
This is first time I have ever left a comment for anything on the internet...Bottom line - great job. .... " hell of an instructor! " thank you Mr. Mello
I give you 6 stars. After watching your video a couple of times I was able install my new spring with in 45 minutes, and it probably saved me at least $400.00 or more.
This was a real learning experience! I had no idea that replacing springs was relatively easy!! My poor old sectional door is so heavy and only one left side spring on the torsion rod! It was really difficult to manually lift it up so bought new 3/4 hp opener and does it struggle getting the lip off of the ground! I now see i should have TWO new springs and bearings and once balanced, the opener should last for many years to come! Many thanks for your expertise!
Great tutorial video. The gentlemen, showing how to install a new spring and bearing clearly explained safety and right way of installation. Very helpful instructions. Thank you.
I have done this job before. But your very comprehensive tutorial has shown me some extremely important facts about the bearings. Thank you for this tutorial it will make my finished product better and safer.
Thanks for the video. I like it when I can learn a little something that I either missed, or the info wasn’t included in a video. So far your video was the only one I can recall that had the turn to height ratio for the springs. Most videos say 30-31 quarter turns, but do not give alternatives for different heights in doors. Keep up the good work man!
Excellent video. Replacing the springs went pretty smoothly. Don't get the drums mixed up. (I did, of course.) But if you do, it will be pretty obvious when you try to put the cable in the slot. The hardest part for me was replacing a bad cable.
About an hour ago I finished replacing my springs. I used the info in this tutorial to do that and to balance the garage door. That took about two hours because I was careful and nervous. Yes I used winding bars. I used a variety of videos and websites to choose the material that needed to be purchased though. I never found one that explained, to my satisfaction, how to measure the end bearing plates so that I wouldn't order the wrong ones. Because of that I didn't replace those, this time. They're old but not shot. I would have liked to replace them however. I then went to your roller replacement video and used that to replace the rollers in about five minutes. Fantastic tutorials. Thanks.
now this is a good tutorial. finally someone that doesnt spend 15 minutes blabbing about dumb shit and got down to it. this video helped me fix my garage door. very good how to. kudos
So thankful you share this info. I just noticed I have a broken spring. You gave me the confidence I needed to do this job. I just changed the rollers. Thanks again.
Thank you very much Thomas! The video is excellent! I followed everything step by step and was able to fix my garage door...I encourage everyone to subscribe! Thank you again!
Awesome video. I was able to go from a torque master plus system to a complete torsion system following your instructions. I thank you a million since by doing so I was able to save approximately $300.
Well I defiantly learned a bunch by watching this. Now I know why my other door isn't working right. Thank you so much for this video. Gene from Iowa :)
Thanks for your videos they matter a lot to us homeowners, every once in awhile my door would hang up and the cable would unravel off the spool and I just realized it must be those bearings? hopefully I can find just that part thanks for the help ! ☆☆☆☆☆.
Thanks for helping me change my spring today. The only thing I did differently is I put tension on the spring first, before winding the wire on the spools. I left the winding bar rest on the top of the garage door with tension on the spring, wound and tightened the spools, then came back and tightened the spring. This way the vice lock pliers are not needed. With tension on the spring, the rod wouldn't spin and I could get better tension on the spools, although the spring will do that automatically it seems. I guess it made it more straightforward and also the vice lock pliers are omitted, in case someone doesn't own that tool.
I wish there was some info given about the middle bearing, but nothing was said. Otherwise, and It's a great tutorial, and it gives me confidence to do my own torsion springs. Thank you!
Thanks. This was really good. You make it easy to understand how to safely install and inspect the garage door springs. Thanks for the insight on the bearing plates. I will inspect those when I check the spring tension and cable tension. Regards. R J
A few years ago, I had to replace my overhead garage door springs and it cost around $140.00. Yesterday I noted that another spring had broken and I called for an estimate and the total cost for service call and springs would be over $400.00! They actually wanted to charge around $135.00 for each spring! I ordered the springs online and will install them as soon as they arrive. My cost? $93.79 for the two springs and $15.97 for bearing end plates. Labor? N/A
After your garage door is installed, with the door closed paint a white line along the spring so that you can see at a glance if the spring has started slipping. Also acts as a guide when resetting it
I really love your video and it's funny that I was watching it because my spring door just broke today LOL I wish you guys did that here in California by Los Angeles
Just completed replacing a broken spring with this video. Very helpful, thank you. Found my HEX sockets don't work with the set screws on the slings though.
The socket probable needs to be a 7/16 12 pt since the set screws are actually 3/8 square heads. There are other sizes but not as often. Also if using a wrench use a 3/8 open end so you dont round off the corners.
Great job! Simple, concise instruction. #1 in my book....and folks don't forget to hit that like button it helps them get exposure. (No, I don't know them)
Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, lost of eleasticty, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you
I like all series of videos made by this guy and he looks professional and experienced and reliable. But some red painted parts still are better to be done by those professional guys as these red painted parts have tensions and are dangerous.
Hi Thomas. Great video instructions. I noticed after you wound each spring, you didn’t tap the spring out about an inch before tightening the set screws. Is it not necessary? I’ve watched a few other videos where they do the 1inch tap. Thanks.
Would it be ok to lower the bearing plate and use the upper slots so I can gain enough clearance to mount a lift master wall mount closer? Great video.
Thank you great video appreciate the info I just have one question I cannot find a video will show you if you go to a brand new house got the door with no spraing how can you tell what kind of spring do you need

This was my sentiments exactly! No need to add a comment other than to say, impressive.
Best tutorial I have ever watched. I have looking at other videos and they never explained the process as good as you. Thanks

Hi Thomas. Great video instructions. I noticed after you wound each spring, you didn’t tap the spring out about an inch before tightening the set screws. Is it not necessary? I’ve watched a few other videos where they do the 1inch tap. Thanks.
Thanks for Vlog. Very informative. Off topic question: Extension spring setup vs. Torsion Spring setup. Pro and Con please. Thx, Brooks
